SD storage capacity - Mate 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone tried a 256gb sd card with this phone? Or is 128gb really the maximum?

im guessing 128gb is just the cited max since larger sized sd cards arent really common yet

Hi,
The maximum capacity of micro SD is "200" GB.
Although on eBay there're some 256GB of them, all of them are FAKE.
I use 200GB microSD on my NXT-AL10. Nothing to say correctly working.

Because I'm a new user, I can't post the link.

i figured smth like that, but its good to have confirmation from a user i think once 256gb cards become available theyll also work just fine on the mate 8

Yeah, I meant to say 200gb. I'm used to capacities increasing by increments of 16, 32 or 64gb.
Good to know it's working! Thanks.
Can't wait for the 500gb.... Not a cloud user.

same here, just use the cloud to provide files in forums

MicroSD speed and the M9 RAW?

I just tested my Sandisk Ultra 16gb with the RAW option of camera, well while it takes only 3 seconds to save using internal memory, with the MicroSD Sandisk Ultra it takes 6 to 9 seconds!!!
The writing speed is about 10-15mb/s with the Ultra.
I was going to buy a 64gb card Ultra but when I saw how slow it works with the RAW (and perhaps 4K recording) I think it will be better to buy a 32GB Samsung Pro that would give 75 to 80mb/s .
What do you think?
Anyone using a Sandisk Extreme or Samsung Pro MicroSD on their M9?

I have Samsung pro 64GB, Raw 1sec, 4K no problem at all, real speed in write going till 74, read 82
I have the SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB just give me Read @ 90.56MB/s @ Write @ 81.18MB/s from the phone and speeds were similar using USB 3.0 to test the card on my PC before using it in the phone. I used A1 SD Bench from the play store to test it from the phone.
I haven't paid attention to the RAW files yet.
Wow nice!
Looks like it's faster than the internal memory.
I will get a 32gb Pro then
Well the speed I got for the internal memory was 215MB/s for read and 111MB/s for write.

A1 SD Bench says Read is 44MB/s Write is 42 MB/s on my Sandisk Extreme 64GB.
I think I have a 64GB Samsung Evo in my RaspberryPi2, I'll test that later.

Perhaps a corrupted card?
My Sandisk was supposed to be 12mb/s but the best it can get is 5mb/s write!!!
Defective cards are numerous
I think I will get a Samsung Evo 64GB
Go with 64gb Sandisk Extreme. Speeds are 95 mb/s read and 90mb/s write.

I would recommend you Samsung MicroSDXC 64GB PRO Memory Card. Also other Samsung cards are great.
Very good read/write speeds.
I put a Lexar 128 GB 1000x in my MXP and it is functioning great.
I'm considering purchase of this phone - sounds like support for a micro SDcard works well, so is there any benefit to buying the 64 or 32GB internal storage models vs. the 16GB model? I can capture video and do TWRP backups to the (relatively inexpensive) SDcard, so what am I missing on a cheaper 16GB phone?

Is the Moto X a UHS-I or UHS-II compatible host device? The extra cost of these higher-end sdcards would be wasted otherwise, correct?
Edit - I googled this topic and found this post: https://forums.motorola.com/posts/8cda627ead . In short, it confirms that the Moto X benefits from / takes advantage of a UHS-1 U3 microSD card. @EmperorX makes a good suggestion.
I still want to know if I really want to spend extra for a 32 or 64GB Moto X, given that I can buy a 32GB UHS-1 U3 card for US $15.
Both cards are UHS-I class U3
It does support uhs-1 from what I've read. We'll see, my wife's card gets here on Wed and I'll test out. Sandisk extreme pro.
Edit:
I see you've read what I read.

If there's a good Android M ROM available yet, see about formatting it as phone-specific "internal" storage... See: https://www.androidpit.com/android-m-release-date-news-features-name#performance

Problem
and what the maximum amount of the SD card can be used as system memory? I have a card to 64GB, and when you try to make it a system unit for a long time it formats, but it is empty and then says that the card is damaged, but if you use it like a regular card, it works fine and displays. Do not tell me what could be the problem?

Can you report on the relative performance of your higher-end microSD card vs. the internal storage? For example:
compare the time it takes to do a TWRP backup of the whole phone to internal vs. the microSD card
Capture full QHD video directly to the microSD card
etc.
Thanks!

I've got a generic 32gb class 10 and I have it as internal and its really laggy when I use Facebook, twitter etc so at the moment I just chuck my games on there. If I get a San disk extreme or pro will that eliminate the lag?

Maybe... But don't expect it to. Internal memory is much faster than even the fastest SD card. If you must use your SD card as internal storage for apps due to space, then move low usage apps to external card and heavy use ones to internal

I would like to know this too. There was some user who was successfully using a 200gb card in his phone. But since then I havent read of anyone else doing it. It would be great if we could use a 200gb card in our phone. Someone who is using it, kindly give your feedback.

Probably me, I have a Sandisk Ultra 200GB card. Works fine, no issues at all, ends up around 180GB usable. I've formatted it in both ext4 and exfat, both work fine. I did some benchmarks in another thread around here somewhere. Any questions, feel free.

The One Plus 3 and Axon 7 have UFS 2.0 I'm pretty sure. The Honor 8 has some of the fastest App start up times and 4K random read & write speeds though which tend to be more important to the actual user experience (presumably due to larger/more aggressive file caching in RAM and firmware optimizations respectively). http://www.anandtech.com/show/10678/the-huawei-honor-8-review/7

MI5 also do have UFS support.
But Huawei P9 too lacks in UFS
I'm not sure about the P9, but in practice without a USB 3.0 data connection (the Honor 8 has USB 2 transfer speeds from its USB3 Type C connector), the only thing you would probably notice a difference on the H8 versus devices with UFS 2.0 would be copying (not moving) a file from internal storage to internal storage (i.e. making a duplicate). Even with 90-95MB/s rated SD cards sequential transfers shouldn't bottlenecked. The 64GB Samsung Pro+ card I'm using only hits 75MB/reads and 90MB/s writes (why are writes higher?) according to the few tests I've run.
That said, I'd still wish the Honor 8 had UFS anyway just because.

IMO this is an everything killer.
Best device on the market, hardware wise, by an absolute mile.
It is double the price of the HN10, though.
There's also the problem of continued bootloader unlock and development uncertainty for all Huawei / Honor devices.

I'm probably going to get the 8GB/256GB since the claim is it does not support Micro SD cards, I rather the bigger internal storage, then have to buy Propriety memory (nano sd, only for huawei). Just waiting for the confirmation it works with AT&T and a out of box review.
