Straight talk users - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone started their service already on a custom ROM? I'm wondering if being and rooted will affect setup with the Sim. I have the phone but another month or so to active my bacon lol
I'm trying to see if it will work that way. It didn't on sprint on a different phone.

The problem with you had with Sprint is because it isn't a GSM carrier, Straight talk is, so you shouldn't have a problem.

[NS4G] Nexus S 4G on MetroPCS?

MetroPCS does not have this phone listed in it's list of flashable phones.
How might I get this working? If I were to get my hands on a MetroPCS ROM for another android device, is it possible I could piece together a working ROM? Or does anyone have any other ideas?
It's currently set up for Sprint (clean ESN for Sprint, not that it matters much for what I'm trying to do).
....... no
one rom for 1 phone doesn't work for another. it requires work to port
Yep, I got that. I was more asking if there is something I can get from an existing metropcs ROM to clue me in onto what changes to make.
If I reset the SPC, upload a metropcs PRL, and I'm assuming change any wap settings to use metropcs's internet... is that enough? Or is there really more to it than that?

the answer is no.
WiMAX isn't even on MetroPCS. It uses LTE. There is just way too much difference in terms of radios and frequencies.

Ahhh. Thanks for the info. Guess I'll activate on Sprint then. Anything to get away from AT&T right now, service in my areas has been horrible for months.
Metropcs nexus S`
Well obviously the 4g portion of it is different.
Now the evdo and supposedly 3g should work on are where metropcs has it.
Its no problem otherwise you can do everything you can with the nexus, just at a slower Internet speed.
You should probably be able to follow a tutorial for a samsung phone.
Is it possible to get an unlocked CDMA Nexus S so that I can use it with Metro PCS. Which brings up another question, would Metro PCS allow me to use the Nexus S on their service?
Technically, the Nexus S as well as the Nexus S 4G are "unlocked" and can be rooted with no special hacks. I would imagine that MetroPCS can develop their own ROM along with a radio and make it available on their site if users choose to do that. I don't believe there is anything in Sprint's contract which would cause a lawsuit for doing that.
The question is if MetroPCS will allow this phone on their network... it's up to them but I don't see why not, as they don't make money on phones anyway (I think)

Why would MetroPCS make a ROM for a phone that is unsupported? They'd have to go to Google to make a compatible phone in the first place.
Why would they spend money on making a ROM for the Nexus S? That just makes no sense. A radio is also not open-sourced. Radios can only be created by Samsung or Google for the Nexus S.
Get your facts straight
Whoever asked the thread said nothing about ROMs. He asked if an unlocked nexus s could be flashed over to metro which it should be able to.

Try these for starting points. May be more, but I recalled seeing these threads. I know there's also a bounty to unlock a couple of the other GSM bands.

Yeah sory I was manly jus twondering what all is possible its nice to know I can flash to prepayed or T-Mobile but honestly what I realy want to do is flash it to boost. I should have been more clear sorry. but I'm sort of confused because boost tech support says they don't use SIM cards anymore. and the latest device on there network is a Samsung Galaxy s3. so I'm not sure. is there both a gsm and cdma versions of the sg3? I believe the sg3 on boost network is a sprint version.

Boost uses Sprint phones because they are owned by Sprint. I am pretty sure Verizon phones can not be flashed to boost. To my knowledge Sprint phones don't use removable SIM cards do a flash would not be possible

Moving to ATT

Hey guys I want to take my Verizon branded m8 over to straight talk with ATT SIM. So far I've rooted , s off'd and did supercid. Is it as easy as installing ATT RUU and installing straight talk SIM card?
I've seen in the threads that other people have done this but will 4g or LTE still work?
Thanks for any help
HSPA+ is what I get
Did you flash a AT&T Rom or just threw in the AT&T SIM card? And thanks for responding
I just threw in a At&t Sim card. My bootloader is locked so I can't flash Roms.

I plan on doing this today as well.... Did you port from Verizon to ST? If so how did that go? Also... What's supercid?
I did port my number. It took a few minutes and everything was switched over. I had to manually program my apn for data to work. I am not getting 4g or lte though only hspa and its much slower in my area at least. Supercid is basically writing over your cid to allow other phones firmware and Rom. AT&T phones work perfect with straight talk and have working lte so I was going to trick my phone into thinking it was an AT&T model

Just so you guys know, MMS doesn't work for me on stock ROM with the stock SMS app or hangouts. But it works for when I use Textra or chompsms. Shouldn't be a problem if you have a custom ROM.
We won't get LTE unless you're with T-Mobile because this phone doesn't have the correct bands for att LTE

Straight talk SCH-S986C

So I snagged a straight talk galaxy S3. I've already got it rooted running official cm12 for the Verizon varient. Is it at all possible to get this thing to pick a verizon/page plus sim? From looking around I've come to the conclusion that the Verizon S3 is the most similar. What would be the options?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

There is a sim slot. I actually have Verizon contract. After flashing everything an changing a few settings I have talk, text and data but its steady roaming..I wonder if I'll get charged for roaming? Anyways I'm sure if everything is working there's gotta be a way to stop it from roaming.

Maybe a modem? Been scared to try it because I'm confused as to what will cause my boot loader to lock.
Don't know why it worked but *228 just fixed my roaming problem. I thought you couldn't *228 a LTE phone? I know the straight talk S3 has 4G disabled but I'm still running a 4G LTE sim card. This is really strange lol. Never in a million years would I have thought I could get a prepaid phone running on Verizon contract. Maybe pageplus will work as good so I can get away from these high bills and get unlimited internet.

I've searched and searched and I can't find any explanation as to why or where the 4G is deactivated. by the process of elimination, I've come come to the conclusion that it has to be in the physical hardware. I'm going to try one more thing before I start tinkering with cdma workshop. I'm going to try to flash a d2lte rom to see if that does it. anyone know of a lollipop d2lte rom?

I'm wondering if the process they used is the same process page plus retailers used on 4G devices..because my girlfriend had a Verizon s3 that they had to flash to 3G so it can be used on pageplus..when she switched to a note 2 a few weeks ago they told her they offered Verizon's 4G coverage now and she would get it on her note no flashing required. Worked right outta the box. We took her old s3 and hooked it up for my mom. They said that it had to be flashed back to 4G so I'm wondering if straight talk flashed this phone to 3G only with flashing software..if so, is there a free program anywhere to do this? The CDMA workshop trial has never given me the outcome I was looking for.

If you are saying that you were on Verizon because you had the Verizon wireless showing in your status bar or because it said it in your phone somewhere then no you weren't on Verizon, your phone showed that stuff because it has that stuff in your build.prop, that doesn't mean you were on Verizon, the only way to actually be on Verizon is if you actually setup an account with them and activated the phone on their network. Supposedly Verizon won't let you activate a straight talk phone on Verizon account, this device is not able to carrier unlock and that's what you have to do to actually switch carriers and use your IMEI on another network. It shows SCH-I535 because of the build.prop, all of that Verizon stuff and the i535 stuff can be edited in the build.prop, that has nothing to do with who you actually have service with, that's just there because its written in the ROM.

How to update your system if you're not using the carrier from your S8(+) version.

This tutorial is for you who bought a carrier S8(+) and is using a SIM from another carrier and, because of that, not being able to update your system through your phones.
Error: "Service Unavailable: Sorry, we are having trouble authenticating your device. Try again later"
So, that's actually pretty easy to do, but a PC (or Mac) will be necessary.
The only thing you have to do is to download Smart Switch from Samsung on your PC and sync it with your device.
After you've done that, Smart Switch is gonna show the option to update your system.
PS: Beware it takes a while to download the update, at least if your S8(+) is from VZW.

The reason people are seeing the error is because the phone is not activated through Verizon , so it is not in their server if you call it. another easy way to get OTA updates is to borrow a verizon sim from a friend, or even start a simple cheapest prepay plan. activate the phone with the sim, then everything will be ok, unless you wipe the phone. Friend of mine ,and myself tried on both his s8 and my s8+ , no problem at all.

Will this change the model number so I can download different ROMs, after I get it unlocked? For example if I want a ROM that's popular for the verizon model, but I'm using the Tmo model? I think Tmo makes you wait a month after activating a device on their network before you're allowed to unlock it.

Yes, that's it. In fact I tried with the Verizon Sim, no Sim, att Sim. All work fine. I have a friend also has a galaxy s8, borrowed a Verizon Sim, activated , removed Sim, att Sim work like a charm with OTA. There are two draw back for using the Verizon phone with Sim from other carriers. No OTA updates unless phone is activated through Verizon, especially for those use the phone over sea. 2nd, no full LTE performance due to lack of band used by your own carrier. For example, band 17 from AT&T, the Verizon phone doesn't have that . Your LTE works, but you likely have lower performance on LTE depends on your location. Verizon phone are unlocked and compatible with other GSM carriers , but not fully optimized.

Verizon phone are unlocked and compatible with other GSM carriers , but not fully optimized.

Thanks for the info. This should work even with prepaid. I'm thinking about getting: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Verizon-BYOD-4FF-SIM-Card-Kit/40716598 and then activate it. I just hope Verizon doesn't deactivate your phone once the prepaid time is up lol.

I think you should just borrow a sim from a friend or family , no need to spend the money and there is no impact what so ever to their service.
I was able to update an S8 by simply removing the SIM and running it with no SIM. Not sure if that'll work for other people, I had to tap 'check for updates' a few times before it went through.

I just did this on my Galaxy S7, and it fixed the issue, and was able to download the latest system update for Android. I was using an AT&T SIM card.
I did have to restart my phone after I removed the AT&T SIM card though, just telling what I did.
Thanks for posting this man!
you all could just go here http://updato.com/firmware-archive-select-model?q=sm-g950t&exact=1&r=TMB&v=&rpp=100 download which firmware you want. flash in odin and enjoy new update. this will work every time without problems and it does not care who your provider is at all.
