Galaxy s4 internal memory problem. - General Questions and Answers

I am using galaxy s4 gt i9500. The internal memory available for the 16gb variant is about 8 gb, out of which i have hardly used 1 gb. I don't know where the rest of the memory has gone. Is it possible to format or something(except the factory reset; it didn't help) like we can format the sd card. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks a lot!

A large amont of the space is your rom im guessing around 3-5gb then u have probly another 2-3gb for ur stock apps then anything u install after that. They say 16/32/64 or 128 on the box but thats never the room u get software always takes up a large portion. Luckily ur device has a sd card slot i believe so u can use that to expande ur storge for a relatively cheap price.
If you need more room on the device you can always root and install custom software or uninstall apps with titanium backup but be careful read the guides in your device forum and follow them properly.

Root your phone and install link2sd.this will solve your storage problem.

First of all your rom will take a lot, second of all your apps and your old apps data incase you used a custom recovery to factory reset, and third of all Cashe it self could reach up to 1 gb.

I understand that the rom may take a large amount of memory but i dont think so that it can take upto 7-8 gb. I have cleared all the cache so it cannot be cache either. I think i may have used custom recovery to factory reset. But when i use file manager to view my internal the total is around only 400 mb including all the folders (like android, dcim, etc)
Btw, I'm running cm12.1. Do you think reverting back to my stock rom would help?
Please help as this is really irritating because most of my apps crash due to low memory.
Thanks.

Yup the issue is that you used a costume recovery to factory reset, I had that issue as well with my note 3 until I realized that all apps data were installed but I didn't see them even on file manager, so I just downloaded a stock firmware and did a stock factory reset and then everything was good as new!

[Q] Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (GT-p5113) Internal Storage Issues after flashing custom ROM

So after rooting and flashing the "Clean" ROM v1.1 I had internal storage issues. First the gallery app would not work. It would give me a message "not enough memory" when trying to open it. Also I could not save any downloads, I would get a message that download failed. So, I recovered to the stock ROM provided in the guide (I have a GT-p5113). Recovering to this stock ROM fixed the above issues. However at this time I noticed that my internal storage shrank from the stock 16GB to about 2 GB total (even if i deleted everything my total internal storage would only be 2GB). So it's like my internal memory went from 16GB to 2GB for no reason. See attached screenshot. I'm not sure if that happened after installing the custom "Clean" v1.1 ROM or when I recovered back to the stock ROM. I've since flashed both the "Infected" ROM and the CM9 ROM and with those I still have the reduced storage area and the problems with the gallery app and inability to save downloads.
Anyone have any ideas what happened and how I can get my storage space back?
Same Problem here
Im having the same problem with mine Ive flashed all three of those roms and have no internal storage space left really. the Misc Files in internal storage has jumped to 8.34 GB and an available 2.18 left.
Please someone help us.
P.S. if you figured out how to fix this please post back.
Thanks!
Gallery "not enough memory"
Similar issue. Tried wiping Dalvik but still not working. Installed 3 times wiping data each time. Any ideas?
Same exacts specific problem as kdubbfive.
im not sure Dunkn.Mynes has the same problem. He is losing free space as if something is taking up room .Dunkn, check you r. clockworkmod directory isnt on your internal memory, taking up more room each time you r un a back up.
Just to underline kdubbfive's problem.
have gt-p5113 - same here
installed cleanrom 1.1 - - same here here
total internal memory shrunk from 16gb to 2gb - same here
restored and tried other roms, internal memory remains 2gb
Weird thing is i had the exact same problem putting clean rom on my phone - Motorola atrix
if i dont he of any fixes ill probably try factory restore with kies and the computer image. i only have a chinese stock image that is suppoosed to be the same as USA version. but I'm not convinced of it.
ill post if i get the nerve to try this our find another fix. if anyone has stock image for gtp5113 p please post. good luck.
Thanks for the Info - Hope to find Solution
Glad to hear someone else is having the exact same issue. I've been going crazy trying to find a solution. Please post if you are successful. I'll do the same.

HERE's what worked for me (kind of a complete wipe)
I'm a novice, first time writing instructions, and 2nd time ever posting so let me know if I missed something, and I'll try to get back to you on it.
Make backups as best you can (CWM recovery, Titanium, nandroid)
ALL DATA WILL BE LOST. Haven't tried recovery of data yet. That's the concept behind all the backups above.
Not sure all was neccessary, or what step was key so here is all of it:
Install Kies http://www.samsung.com/us/kies/
Connect tablet and follow any Samsung Instructions exactly
What is says there is updated ROM available, allow it to to install.
On reboot your system will not be rooted, and data will be there (only for the moment), on mine internal storage was still 2GB
Do a factory reset, wipe any cache and all that. Maybe repeat for good luck.
Follow the rooting instructions exactly here including re-downloading files and following all precautions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1657056
(I noticed the cwm file has a PIT file in it which relates to internal memory partitioning. I suspect this may have been key here.)
Follow instructions all the way to the end.
In the end I had 12GB internal which is normal because I think there are 2 2GB hidden partions there for ROM and maybe swap file, I don't know)
I'm going to make a backup now, then go back to see what I can recover. On second thought, maybe I'll just start fresh. Also, I think I'm done with custom roms. I can deal with the junk Samsung programs for the sake of dependability.
Good luck. I'll check back to see if you have questions.
Thank You!!!
Worked like a charm! Thanks, a million!

roms take more space after being flashed
so to increase your memory you can uninstall unwanted system apps and other apps and after that boot into recovery and wipe cache partition and then reboot you will really have more free space
also
you are having space issues right??
dont you use sd card ??

If you do the correct wipes and install an aftermarket ROM, is should take up less space. Most aftermarket ROMs are quite a bit smaller than the stock ROMs. There are a few running around in this forum that are heavily bloated with stuff to make the Tab more media friendly, but these are the exceptions. With that being said, did you do a clean wipe prior to install? If not, that's the issue. There's some left over data in there. Also, the memory is partitioned into sections, one for the ROM and one for storage. Getting a SD would be good so you can store your backups there. Backups take up a lot of memory.

GUYS..... first of all thank you so much for taking the time to respond. this has been a thorn in my side for a while now.. i do indeed have an sd and prior to the switch from stock to cm10.2 i was able to employ the ext script to swap memory which worked well overall. i do not know of any viable way to employ any memory swap script or app thast works well with cm10.2 i have done a great deal of research and i have not seen anything.. im also not a noob but i do feel like on right now!!!! this is so annoying. here are my questions:
do you know of any app to sd applications that work with cm10.2?
do you know of anyway to install apps to the card?
as for the wipe.... yes I did wipe completely ( at least I thought I did) I wiped data, system, cache, dalvik, and then formatted system, cache, data then wiped then cleared dalvik again prior to rebooting. this was thorough and typically what i do when I flash.
im totally open to suggestions. as of now the tab is pretty much rendered useless because I cannot even update apps. it only sees 4.59gb of the onboard space and the entire 16gb of the ext card.
thanks !!!!!!!!!!!

also to move apps to sd you can try app2sd script or any app which move apps to sd card on rooted phones

[Q] Galaxy S4 (rooted) - Out of Internal Storage (...but I am not)

OK...I have a rooted Sprint Galaxy S4, and keep getting "Storage Space Running Out" message !
The thing though is, that I should have tons of internal storage left. I have flashed 3 different ROMs, and after a few days I get the message again. I can erase some apps to free up space, and half a day later same problem. I can't even get my apps on the phone, due to space issues and I also can't put them on the external SD (not with a specific APP to do it for me, nor can I move them manually, because the button is simply not there in the Storage or APPs SETTINGS menu).
Every time I flash a new ROM I clear data, dalvic....full factory reset....but end up with the same result!
Could someone please help out with a fix or solution with this very annoying problem.
P.S.: ....yes, I have searched tons on this forum and others, but nothing has worked for me yet!
....ANYONE ????
Hello
Looking at images you included it looks like apps & data takes only 1 GB space . There must be some junk in internal storage (may be old .asec files , thumbnails etc). Attach the screenshot of sd storage also . I should see where the data is stored in your current rom .

I flashed old Nandroid of SACS ROM 4.3....so it would be a stock rom screenshot now, and all you would see is that there is 18Gig memory left on the SD card!!!
I had to reflash Nandroid because I traveled and I wasn't getting a signal on my previous rom! I do now...but the problem remains, or actually is worse, but at least my phone works to make calls (no txt or email, because storage space is too low).
In either case, the SD storage has plenty of room, but I don't think that this was ever an issue!....I think it is the phone itself, but maybe there is a fix and I would prefer that over taking it in for many reasons!
Thanks for getting back to me though, let me know.....
Hi
Copy all required data from internal storage to sd card and format internal storage from custom recovery (CWM/mount/format emmc or TWRP/wipe/advanced/emmc) and reboot.
Hope it works !

i want you to try stock rom for few days and check

I wiped everything again and did factory reset...
copied everything from internal storage to a computer...
formatted data and system (twice)
wiped again, formatted data and system again....
flashed a sprint stock rom
same problem.... I have 860MB of 16GB unused space available!!!!
when I check though, my system data (bare essentials of what is left) is only 348MB....there is 647MB used for apps....the rest is clean!!!
I am still not sure where all the storage went! Could my internal storage be corrupt or broke???
Thanks for the ideas, I will try anything!!!

[Q] flashed resurrection rom on galaxy tab 2 7.0, no memory left to install apps

I rooted my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 P3113 (used to have jellybean 4.2.2.) and flashed the Resurrection Remix custom ROM and GAPPS on it. It's fantastic and running great!!!
The tablet came with 8 GB of space and I have a 32 GB sd card in it. I keep getting "not enough space" warnings from my SD card even though it's almost empty. I can't install any apps to the sd card, and there is not enough internal memory to store them either. This makes the tablet almost as useless as before I rooted and put a custom rom. Is there a way to get my sd card to stop thinking it's full/ allow apps to move over to it? Is the next step to partition the sd card and then use an app like link2sd? I've never done it before. Please advise, thank you.

You can try transferring the data on the sdcards to some other place and then you can try formatting them through recovery

The ROM and data are in separate partitions. It sounds like you didn't wipe your data when you flashed a ROM with a different version of Android. So , the data partition is still full with your old data and the apps that are installed there are inaccessible by the system. You need to go to recovery and wipe data, but not the sd card, and not internal memory. I don't believe a factory reset will help since it seems the system already can not see the partition the apps are installed on now.

Everytime i install an app it says out of space.

Hi there
I have done a small search of the thread on this section of the forums but it seems I can not come up with the answer.
I have an old N5 16gb model. Running on DU 6.0.1 rom. Every time i install an app it says there is no space and i need to delete some apps before i can continue.
If i delete apps it still doesn't work. If i clear the cache it works.
As i go along it seems i am getting less and less apps on the phone. Android system is taking 3.42 gb of the partition.
I have never done anything to the partitions when i wiped the phone to put on a new rom. Just wipe and install rom.
Any suggestions?
Secondly If i flash a android 7 rom do i need to repart the phone? I haven't flashed anything in about a year so i am a little rusty.

Apps are getting bigger and bigger but you should check the twrp folder, maybe you have a backup or two that you don't need so you should erase them. Around 3gb per backup in average.

You could try to format your internal SD or install DiskUsage to find out which app takes most of the space. I think it must be an app with a huge cache.

Settings->Storage->Cached data click on it and choose to delete it.
About flashing 7 ROM it is highly required to do clean install(wipe everything), everytime you switch from one ROM to another, if this is what you meant by restarting device. Re-partition wont be needed, just wipe and flash.

Sweet! I do the cached data wipe every time i need to install something. It's the only way i can get something on there.
I was wondering about the repartition as i heard the 7 roms are fairly large.
