[Completed] Find a non cellular device. - XDA Assist

My work doesn't allow anyone to have their phone on them (besides breaks, as usual a couple idiots ruined it for everyone)
We are allowed to listen to music via ipods/mp3 players. I dislike ipods/touch, and prefer to have bluetooth and sd card slot (for my music/books). Right now I'm using an used galaxy player 3.6. It's very sluggish, so I was wondering any other devices that run android, about the same size as a phone, but has no cellular capabilities at all.
So far I haven't been able to find much, as easy as it would be to get a used or cheap phone, I'm worried about bringing one in. In case they have no clue that it isn't being used as a phone. And a tablet is just too big to carry around in a factory(and looks funny)

Iphone 4 n Htc evo

Hi evrybody I'm a new user in this forum and I'm in a conflict that hope you guys could resolve with your knowlegde. I'm actually writing this thread with my Palm treo 750, I hope that this is the right spot for this thread cause I've been reading a lot of post in many forums and websites but I've got my self just more confused of what to do. Ok I've just brought this smartphone for my distantance and pocket connectivity esigence, I was new in the smartphone world and I found my self mistaken about evrythings. I wish to traw this phone in the bin rightnow. It's making me crazy! Costantly freezing and doesn't do what i need it to do. I need a smartphone that could give me video call via 3g or 4g with VoIP and single VoIP call, flash support (for flash website) and java support (always for the same reason), make fb and msn chat streaming video and music, writing and making photos/videos. I hate when my phone freeze without any apparently reason or lag cause I'm listening music and using internet in the same moment, plus my battery life is about 3 hours. I've been looking in internet and at the end I've arrived to the point that I have to decide betwen Htc evo and Iphone 4. I've tried Iphone 3 and I didn't like it at all, I hate the soft keyboard and the OS doesn't support flash. I've never tried htc evo but I know that andoid is awesome and support flash (I don't kow about java) both have soft keyboard but both have even hard keyboars with witch i can upgrade my phone with (so keyborad will not gonna be a problem) both OS have a lot of free and pay apps they are very versatile. I'm not so confortable with the fingertouch os but I can buy stylus for both mobile. The screen and the camera in the evo are better then the Iphone, and android it's really easy to use (for what I've seen on m.youtube cause I can't see normal youtube) instead of the iphone OS (witch I've found a bit tricky). The iphone have no expandible memory card, (evo does) and (if I'm not wrong) you can tweak android a lot more (and with less problem) than the iphone. So... I've got a calderon of confiuson in my head right now and I need some clarification because maybe what I'm saying is not correct and for sure most of you guys know more than me about. Plus this is just correlated througth my esigence, cause at the end a smartphone it's strictly related of what you want to do with that. Cheers guy, I'm sorry for the large thread but I wanted to be the most possibly clear. I thanks already you guys for this wonderful forum (that I've been using a LOT) and for the one's of you that gonna gimme suggest about.

I own both phones. I'd personally recommend the iPhone 4 over the EVO 4G. The display on the iPhone 4 is actually better: higher resolution, better colors, better viewing angles - the EVO's display is only bigger. The camera (both front and back) on the iPhone 4 is also better: it's 5MP but has a better sensor which leads to better quality stills and 720p video. The EVO also has a severely gimped/old GPU and while the iPhone 4's GPU is not cutting edge it's still a lot better in day to day use. Overall both phones have similar hardware features but just about everything on the iPhone 4 performs better - I wont get into software since that's more opinion/preference based.
With that said, I wouldn't recommend either for you. You seem to like Android (and it is a good OS) so with that in mind I'd recommend either a Nexus S (the best Android phone out IMO + VOIP is integrated into 2.3 which is only currently/officially available on the NS and may never land on the EVO), G2 (if you like hardware keyboards), or a MT4G (if you just want really beefy specs).
Cheers! Appriciate the anwser! I actually don't know about the OS maybe i could just get my self used to it. cause I've read that it have skype with video call (and that's one of the most important things). I'll like to try that nexsus that u was talkin bout. thank you! the nexsus seems the phone that i was looking at, but no programs till now support the front facing camera for video call..

[Q] Wanted: GSM Device with Hard Keyboard... Which one?

I currently use a AT&T Tilt 2 (aka HTC Touch Pro 2/Rhodium) and I love most everything about it, especially the keyboard, but I am increasingly becoming aware of how limited it is compared to the newer phones on the market that have faster processors, much more RAM, and far superior cameras/camcorders. I'm not much of a techie, but I can understand flashing/tweaking my devices if the instructions are clear enough, so I've been trying to research the new phones on the market on my own to decide what my next device should be... Now, I'm even more confused than I was before!
I've always used Windows Mobile (Siemens SX56, then SX66, then Kaiser, now Rhodium), therefore I have no experience with Android or Windows 7. Android seems like the logical progression, as it's not locked down like W7 and iPhone, but I am hesitant about going over to the unknown and regretting it. My (very un-technical) wish list for a new device is:
New device MUST have a hard, slide-out, landscape keyboard (so, iPhones need not apply! LOL)
Decent camera with flash and HD video (preferred)
Sync well with Microsoft Outlook, as my entire life is in my Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, etc.
Must have GPS (but I believe most devices have GPS anyway) -- I currently use Bing for navigation, as it is free and has voice-guided directions
Must either have large memory capacity or expandable memory (card) capability
I'm not a gamer by any stretch, so I'm not looking for a toy, but to have a device that would actually play decent videos (from YouTube and the like) would definitely be a plus. Also, I find that I don't use my Rhodium much for music, as I'm able to store much more music on my 60GB MP3 player than I would on my device anyway.
I basically want a phone that will contain & manage my life, allow me to easily sync with my computer(s), act as my portable computer, and have a few cool bells/whistles to make my life easier. I've looked at what AT&T has on offer and the only device that I seem to like is the LG Quantum, but I am very hesitant since the prices on Ebay have some down pretty drastically on that one (you can pick one up for a little over $100 now, which can't be a good sign if Rhodiums are still selling for almost the same price) and the new W7 system just doesn't entice me yet. I want to control a lot on my phone, so I feel like I might be taking a step backwards if I went with that device. I'm not opposed to getting an unlocked phone from another carrier, but I want to be sure that I am still able to get the most out of whatever device I buy.
What devices out there would fit my criteria? What have those who also loved their Rhodiums switched to? Is there anything on the horizon for AT&T users that I should wait for?
Thanks for allowing me to pick your XDA brains! I've been here for several years and have always found our members helpful and knowledgeable, so I appreciate and respect your insights/opinions... Thank you!
Debbie

[Q] Options for using Samsung Focus S as primarily a Zune?

I recently obtained a Samsung Focus S (windows phone challenge) and was hoping to use it primarily as a zune in the car to start replacing my zune hd 64gb. However only having 13gb of on board storage is really limiting. Is there anyway to add some additional storage? Networked hard drive I could just keep in the car? The only app I've found so far that can read networked drives is "ShareFolder" and it does not seem to have the ability to map a drive. I'm on sprint with a galaxy II and will not be switching to at&t so the phone will not have service. An alternative would be to tether off the galaxy but that would be a major pain every time I got into the car. The Focus S section of the forums seem rather dead compared to most, no love for this phone? Any thoughts are appreciated.
Since you'll have no service, I guess cloud services are out. Frankly, it sounds like you're better off giving to a family member or selling it. It seems like a lot of trouble to go through for marginal benefits (if any?).
13 gigs for just music isn't enough? You must have one long commute! Anyways I know what you mean, our device doesn't seem to get much love despite it (my opinion) the 2nd best wp7 device next to the 900.

[Q] Should I buy a Android phone or just a normal phone?

I know this question may be seem insane for lot of people out there. But please be kind enough to answer me with patient. (typical research)
I am a Linux developer. I am used to develop on desktop environment and find my self confident with portability of laptop. For all of these years I used a simple mobile phone just to make calls and texts. I don't ever do browse web or take photos from my mobile. I have digital cameras and camcorders for that. Most technical thing I used with my phone is using it as a presentation remote controller over blue-tooth. That's all.
Recently my phone broke down due to my careless nature. So it's time for me to buy a mobile. I thought of going for a android (smart phone). Could you guys point me out why should I get a smart phone? Would it be waste of money? I don't need to read books, surf web, take photos or play games on mobile. I see gps as a useful thing but not using that much either. I see a camera on smart-phone is a waste. I like to use it as a QR reader too. Also if I buy it I would make apps for it as I know how to develop android apps. But I don't need to buy it for app making.
So please stop laughing at me and tell me why should I shift. I'm bit old fashion guy. Thank you
P.S. :- Thank you guys so much for the support. I made my decision. You guys helped me to make it. I'm buing android in next week. Again thanks alot.

These days, many people have a Smartphone as well as a normal calling+texting phone. Its simply because Smartphones don't have much battery backup and the normal phones can last for 3-4 days. And for calling and texting they uses this normal phone and for internet related things, Smartphones! But its just for heavy phone user.
In your case, if you don't use internet related apps or web browsing you can pretty much opt for a normal phone as it comes cheap and can save battery. Android or any other Smartphone is only useful for those who uses Social Networking or Instant Messaging, etc. And if you feel like you want to shift to Android after purchasing a normal phone, its do-able because normal phones like Nokia 109, Nokia 114 etc. costs much less.
definitely smartphones
As of these days smartphone pricing is going down day by day, and its better to hav one if you develop apps. One point we dont know when an emergency mail has to be sent or receive only by your smartphone 3g .
You don't need one its that simple
So many Roms so little time
It's up to you.
Personally, I've found plenty of times it's much easier to do something internet-related on my phone rather than get out or bring my big, heavy laptop. I used to do that. Get lost, need directions, et cetera ? That meant pulling over to somewhere with free WIFI. Having a smartphone means you just need to pull over anywhere - or use voice commands/have a passenger do it/just be unsafe/et cetera.
I used to have a point-and-shoot camera and the only time I've used it since getting my new phone with a decent camera is to take a picture of the phone itself. Why carry around a bunch of stuff when one small object can do it all ?
With my smartphone I hardly ever text any more since I can use data IM services. Not really essential, but it gives you options. I also find typing on the touchscreen to be faster and easier thanks to Swiftkey 3. I had phones with a physical keyboard before and I don't miss it.
If you are getting a carrier upgrade or considering buying through eBay or the like, I think a good question is "why not" ? You can get a good enough smartphone for pretty cheap and get a feel for it.
One thing I love is things like Astrid tasks - I can have it instead of a grocery list, et cetera - I won't lose it because my phone is something I always check to have with me instead of a piece of paper. I can carry it while getting groceries unlike a whole laptop or even computer. It's also incredibly easy to take notes at times when getting a whole laptop out would be ridiculous. You can make notes of things to remember and add calendar events that sync to your desktop/laptop. I have my phone syncing to three other devices so that just like not having to carry an extra camera, I don't have to manually transfer everything on physical media.
Sure, I don't NEED to play mobile games, but... why not ? Even my mom likes Android gaming. My phone plan is LESS than my talk + text plan was with Sprint, it's not like I'm paying extra for this. I keep a book or two on my phone because why not, it comes in handy when needed and it doesn't cost me anything. I watched a bit of a show on Netflix while waiting for a friend - so much faster and easier than setting up a whole laptop in my car and trying to get a WIFI signal strong enough. I'm so pleased that I'm paying less money and getting so much more - my last phone couldn't even go on-line, let alone stream HD video over 4g.
I like being able to search for answers to "when is Sears open until" or "nearest liquor store" or "I haven't seen a road I recognise for ten miles" - and be able to get directions. Yeah, it's silly, but it's pretty great. I had to drive once to a friend's parents' house - somewhere I'd never been. Instead of getting arduous turn-by-turn directions, I could just get the street address and Google Maps lead me there without needing to keep my friend on the phone while driving. My friends and I routinely use the navigation since even if you know where point B is, you might not immediately know the best way to get there from point A - saves gas and time.
I would disagree that you don't need it for app making. Not technically, no - but how can you really be a good app-maker if you don't understand the user and what the user wants ? You can read about it, sure - but you're not going to have the best tools to be creative and innovate unless you have it in your hands and understand the unique challenges and logistics that come with actually using a smartphone. It's like if doctors only read books and never interacted with sick people under instruction before being "on the job" for real. You learn so much by having hands-on experience that might be easy to overlook or not consider otherwise.
My dad had a flip-phone until recently. He asked the same question, "why" ? Now he wonders why he ever said "no". Yeah, he has a laptop required for work and a lot of other things, but it's just the little things that it adds - the options, getting rid of extra gadgets, making life a little bit easier when you'd have been paying for the phone service anyway - why not ?
Could I get by without it ? Definitely. But why would I give it up when it's actually saving me money ?
Thank you guys! I think I found my answer.

:good: Thank you so much for the time you took for giving me a reply. I don't want to earn from making apps. I'm a free and open source developer and my profession is linux (for now ). Using map is one of my conserns. I don't like playing games on mobile as due to tiny screen. Even playing angry birds on mobile is less effective than using a large monitor. So I'm not conserned about it.
About shopping list. Well I have a similar idea to develop a free app for keep tracking things you do.
Again thank you very much. Your very explaintory answer have opned new use cases for me. God sake you are a good technical writer. May I ask you, are you a QA or Analysist? Because you know how to reply and give use cases.
Thank you guys. I guess I found the answer. But one more small problem. is buying android 2.3 device Alcatel OT-903 will be enough? It's a low price phone and if it didn't worth it I wouldn't be too much worrying.

Honestly I wouldn't buy any phone with 2.3 and down them were the worst of android days when they were working out the kinks ICS and up is awesome but if you plan on putting a custom ROM on it it won't matter as you can get the latest version just make sure the phone has good devoloment. Even the crappiest of phones can be turned into a awesome device

I agree with Pennycake. One other thing that I would like to add is that with the convenience of having a smartphone you will find yourself using the features a lot more then you anticipate now.
I do not understand what do you mean "normal phone"?; since Android is already a standard of a phone.
OP - You know what answer you would get if you come and ask it an android forum!

Well since I'm a linux developer I'm willing to try out the hacking and cracking in hardcore way. But the problem is how to determine whether the device can be installed with 4.0 ? I found that on this forums there is custom rom for alcatel phone but is it available for OT 903-d ?

LIFE! MAKE IT WORTH LIVING!
Of course you should go with android phone. Now a days android phone are available in very affordable price with all latest features.
Android has much more advantages of apps and stuff and mobility.. you'll never know until you buy..
But then again, Firefox Os and Ubuntu Os are coming up..
If you're a Linux fan, May be wait for an Ubuntu mobile Os i.e.,if you can wait.

Well since I'm a linux developer I'm willing to try out the hacking and cracking in hardcore way. But the problem is how to determine whether the device can be installed with 4.0 ? I found that on this forums there is custom rom for alcatel phone but is it available for OT 903-d ?

Well let's put it this way I have a 3yr old phone a Samsung fascinate the first galaxy's phone to come to verizen its over 3yrs has a single core hummingbird proccesor. You would think this phone sucks right? Nope you know 4.2.2 only came out like 3 days ago we already have it lol and our phone beats most dual cores its amazing what good devoloment and we have over 10 ROMs just for 4.x any its do easy to work no locked anything now if you want a phone like that go with a nexus or Samsung Device There the only people who makes phones completely open no locked boot loader all it takes is a click to root and hundreds of ROMs so just asking as you get a nexus or Samsung device I think you will be happy.
If I helped hit the thanks

This is so true since Apple is just keep making technology expensive and exclusive and dividing social classes while Android is always trying to make good technology for everyone. Just look at those Chinese companies like ZTE and Huawei, few years before, their phones are just CRAP and now as they all use Android OS, their phone just got a new life.
I would go with android phone. In my opinion it is better than the other operation systems and the phones that are using it are the best at the moment.

[Q] From Android to WP8, a few questions?

I currently have a Galaxy s2, but Im thinking of going to WP8, namely an 8x. I did look at the Lumia 920, but its too pricey and I do prefer HTC friendly apps. I have owned an HTC Radar (WP7.5), but found the font too small to read, the ringer/call volume too low and I was stuck with Zune, so a few questions:
- Aim I right in reading that Win7 now sees all WP8 devices as MTP devices, no software needed.. also, do they support Mass Storage (Not a deal breaker, just curious).
- What is the ringer volume like on the 8x, is it loud.. can you hear it in your pocket
- I use Sennheiser buds, so is Beats Audio well done on the phone (Unlike the One x which pops and cracks)
- Can you adjust the text or font size yet in apps, menus or sms.
- Has there been an app developed yet where you can backup your phone or even Backup/ Restore SMS for flashing, or reseting the phone.
- Is the app store any better yet.
- Do you have any regrets changing to WP8.
I mainly use my device for Music, photographs and Bejewelled style games. The reason Im changing over is because I now own a Galaxy Tab 2 7" tablet and so dont need 2 Android devices and I like the simplicity of WP8, which seems alot better developed than WP7, but what about your experiences.. do you like WP8 and are you enjoying your 8x.
Thanks
Wow.. 155 views and not one single person knows anything about the 8X or wp8, stunning..
My local store was kind enough to let me demo the phone after a bit of coaxing, so I found out all i needed to know.

I believe this is true, but can't remember 100%. I'm now on Win8 & I see it as Mass Storage.
Ringer volume is really loud. I keep mine in my pocket all the time & always hear it. It even wakes me from a dead sleep, which I can sleep through almost anything & am partially deaf from listening to music really loud.
Under Ease of Access there is a new system wide Text Size option & Screen Magnifier option.
Beats is very nice on my $30 JVC over the ear headphones. Nice bass that is almost as good as my 500 Watt 2.1 Logitech computer speakers.
A lot of apps that people been asking for are starting to show up like Pandora, but I'm not really into using a whole ton of apps for every little last thing, so I can't really confirm or deny if you'd be happy with the market selection yet.
WP8 has SMS back-up built in. It syncs all settings, installed programs, sms, contacts, etc. to the cloud. The only thing you loose is the 3rd party app data.
I love WP7/WP8 & always hated Android so I can't answer that for you unbiased.
I got mine two weeks ago and i love it and i come from a dev back ground and also i was a high pro android supporter so for me to switch wp8 was a big deal one i will take forward or regret ....it was a good one i love it and think it was a good move i think its refreshing and when some one flashed the hell out of phones and done nearly everything possible with android after a while you dont wanna do it and it nice to have a phone cant really mod ..unlock and so on so ideal for me

i am also thinking of going to WP8 if my S3 dies from SDS (need a phone for PAX Australia) and i've used WP7.5 before going to android with the S3 and the only thing that bothers me is no SD card slot....grrrr.....

When it comes the an SD Card slot, I would recommend the ATIV S if there's a model with your 3G bands. For me that was a no go on T-Mobile USA.
I am still mulling over it and will probably end up dual welding phones until one of them dies.
I am going through tech like candy right now it seems.

Thanks folks for all the great replies and sorry about the above outburst, sounded abit like trolling , was having a bit of a bad day due to having to the guy in the phone store not being helpful or knowledgeable about WP8.. anyway
All questions are a resounding Yes, so im happier now about WP8...I do like the 8X and the screen is nice, but I do admit.. the lack of the SD Slot does make both the 8S or Ativ S quite tempting, however, i can live with 16GB, its not that little and I do like a great camera and music player, so the 8X looks great.
Sadly though, the S3 is dropping in price because of the S4, so Im trying to resist being pulled back.
Cheers
