Mi4C from Gearbest - Xiaomi Mi 4C

I just ordered one from gearbest, but now I'm reading they put modified software on it and it is not possible to flash official MIUI on it. Has anyone ordered one from gearbest? If so, were you successful in flashing either with fastboot or Mi recovery an official MIUI ROM?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

I ordered the 2Gb version from EU warehouse last week - came with EU MIUI installed, selecting to check for updates resulted in it downloading a newer build, it rebootedand flashed the update itself with TWRP.

So yours came preinstalled with TWRP?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

Hadn't tried booting into it before now, just tried. It's TWRP v2.8.7.0 but it's in what I presume is Chinese...

Whats your software/build version on the "about phone" page?

MIUI 7 by xiaomi.eu 5.12.31 | Beta
Android version is 5.1.1 LMY47V
That'll be after the update it downloaded after I first got it.

I ordered from the China warehouse, so I would assume I'll have a different build on it. Anyone else order from the China warehouse?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

I have the 3gb version from their EU Warehouse and had no problems flashing other Roms. But I cannot remember which miui edition was pre-installed

I don't remember which MIUI version was pre-installed on my phone, but it was packed with malware/spyware (thanks coolicool you bastards), and regardless of MIUI version you have, it's recommended that you download latest stable from miui.com or from xiaomi.eu (if you want to use MIUI) and flash it, as you never know who have tampered with your phone in the first place.
However, you can always start TWRP with this command, without flashing the recovery itself.
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
I did this as I wasn't able to flash TWRP at first. After I flashed CM12.1 without installing the custom rom, I was able to flash TWRP and root the phone. I didn't try to root the phone with the original recovery, but booting into TWRP without flashing it and rooting it from there might do the trick though.
Anyway, I installed a custom rom, custom recovery and rooted the phone in these steps. (Step 4-7 are optional)
Unlocked "developer options"
Enable "android debugging"
boot into fastboot (power+volume down)
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
reboot device into recovery (power + volume up)
Xiaomi recovery (TWRP was not installed)
Reboot device into fastboot
fastboot boot twrp.img
devices boots into TWRP recovery
flash your ROM (I used CM12.1 from XDA)
Boot into ROM
Unlock "developer options"
Enable "android debugging"
Reboot to fastboot
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
Reboot into recovery
TWRP opens - WIN!
Do whatever you want now...

Is it possible to flash official MIUI ROMs with TWRP? I thought they were only compatible with stock Mi recovery.

Yeah, that always seem to be a problem for me as well.
One a side note, please be aware, that you do not want to use the cable from the MI4c with your Nexus 6P (which I can see you're using right now) - as far as I have understood it, the cable coming with the MI4c is a modded standard USB cable, and might damage your Nexus and the charger/laptop if you use it... Just a little warning.

@jonasb_dk. @Ulver.
I was reading about this last week. IIRC the Mi4C is a USB 2.0 device with a Type-C connector. Whereas real Type-C devices are USB 3.0+. And real Type-C devices can draw a lot more power than USB 2.0, so they need a certain rate of resistor in the cable to protect your devices.
Here a link to a Google engineer that's been testing cables on Amazon.com
Hope it helps

ill have mine by 18th or 19th ill help out if still needed.
Mine is supposed to arrive today. I am hoping that root will be as simple as unlocking the bootloader, patching stock boot.img and flashing. I suspect that it'll be a while before we have a custom recovery though.

Doing this would be extremely unwise without a copy of the stock boot image. I would advise you to wait till the factory images come out. Which should be soon. If you bootloop, highly likely, you will have a unusable phone until the factory images get posted.
Well considering that I would need a copy of the stock boot.img to accomplish this process it seems like we are in arguegreement. [emoji6]

Your phone comes with a boot image.
You can patch the boot image with Magisk Manager. Which saves a copy of the patched boot image on your device. Then it needs too be transferred to a PC to be flashed in fastboot. My advice is still relevant. As soon as I have factory images, I will try and root.
I have mine. I'm willing to test whatever/whenever it's safe to do so.
I did enable the "OEM Unlocking" in the developer settings. It didn't come with a USB-C to USB -A cable, so I cannot connect it to a PC anyway.
I have phone in hand.
I would love to test, once the root situation has been figured out. Links to how to get phone rooted appreciated (I'm already aware of how to root it via Magisk (once factory image or standalone boot.img is released), and how to root via TWRP (once TWRP is released)).

There is no "standalone" boot image yet. It comes with factory image. Which should be out soon. The boot image is in your device. You can patch the boot image with Magisk Manager or sideload the Magisk zip. I would not do either of those until you have the factory image. If you bootloop, your device will be useless without factory images

No 2 the boot image in the device. Unlock bootloader.
Download Magisk Manager apk. Im about ready to unlock mine right now. In Magisk Manager select patch boot image file. It will save a copy to your device. Transfer to PC.
Fastboot flash boot image. You will bootloop im sure. AVB has changed with crosshatch.
DO NOT attempt this without factory image.
I will be doing this when factory image comes out.

My apologies gentlemen. You do need a separate copy of the the boot image from the factory image to patch in Magisk Manager. Sorry for the wrong info. Actually it makes sense doesn't it.

I got my Pixel 3XL last night. Excited to get things going on the Pixel 3XL, coming from a Nexus 6P.
I was sad that the factory image isn't immediately available on google's site for this phone, and I don't want to brick it trying to install Magisk without a factory image to fall back onto.
In any case, woot, woot! Phone looks great and I'm going to transfer over my line today.

Flashing from CN version to Global questions

Hey guys,
Im quite new to android and all that comes with it regarding flashing roms. Now i've had the mi mix 3 cn version since october and been wanting to flash to the global rom ever since. So far i have unlocked the bootloader only on my Mix 3. Now Ive started doing some experimenting with an old one plus 1 device of mine before i fully try it on my mix 3 (and **** it up) and so far been able to unlock bootloader and install twrp. But it seems i cant get through the rooting part because every time i download supersu.zip (on my mac) it doesnt actually show as a zip file. So when i copy/paste it into the oneplus directory and try to install through twrp, basically nothing happens because its not a zip file. Is the solution as simple as: " i should just download the same file using Windows??"
Magisk:
in order to root my my Mix 3 and Oneplus 1 i need to install and run Magisk. But after installing it and opening it, it always says 'Magisk is not installed" and under that "Magisk Manager installed".
Question 1: How to fix this.....
Question 2: Do i need to root my Mix 3 in order to flash the global rom?
Currently running MIUI 10.2 Stable 10.2.2.0(PEECNXM)
Many thanks!
Safari unzips after downloading. You can disable it in the settings I think.

You do not need to root your device to flash it to the Global ROM. Unless you need root for something specific, I would suggest forgetting about TWRP and root and using fastboot to flash to the Global ROM. You can find the fastboot flashing guide, here. Click on fastboot, read the instructions, download the correct fastboot image for the Mi Mix 3, unzip it, boot your device into fastboot, connect it via USB to a Windows based machine, and run the flash_all.bat. The device will reboot when finished.
Thanks!

Ok thanks! Will definitly check it out. However i would like to get twrp working as well even just for the sake of it. But every time after i do the "reboot flash recovery rocovery.img" cmd it keeps booting into either the normal OS or into fastboot mode. Ive read about installing the force disable encryption zip file but how do i install that if i cant boot into twrp?

Which TWRP are you flashing? When I was attempting to root my Chinese Mi Mix 3 running the GLobal Stable ROM, it was very hit and miss getting TWRP to stick. I couldn't get fastboot reboot-recovery to work for me so I had to power the device off after flashing TWRP and then hold Volume Up and Power until it vibrates again to get it into TWRP.
To root in that particular situation (Chinese device/Global ROM), you need to flash this region hiding thing right after you flash root. My device kept bootlooping so I gave up and used fastboot to debloat the ROM, which took a few minutes compared to the almost hour I spent on trying to get TWRP to stick and try to get the device rooted. This is one of my many gripes with Magisk root and how inferior it is to Chainfire's discontinued implementation.
Final stage!
Ok so my last post can be ignored as i was finally able to boot into twrp and also installed magisk so now my device is rooted.
I have now uploaded MIMIX3GLOBAL_V10.2.2.0 PEEMIXM into my phones directory.
Now before i install it thru twrp.... Do i need to wipe/erase/clean my phone first? Or can i just install it without doing so?
Many thanks in advance!

ok fair enough. However I have a situation now... after installing the process goes into a loop after selection china as region. The last small message it gives is "find device quit unexpectedly" and then it loops for 5 minutes untill it boots into recovery mode. Here i can only choose boot system (which will go into the same loop again), wipe data, or connect to MIUI assistent...

When cross-flashing, clean/factory reset is always the way to go. With TWRP though, there seems to be some sort of region options not changing issue. There are a few ways to work around it I personally never bothered with, but I have flashed two Chinese devices via fastboot with the Global Stable ROM and haven't ran into the region issue at all.

Fastboot is the bootloader. Once you boot your device into the bootloader (Volume Down + Power), you can use ADB through the command prompt to flash TWRP or just flash the Global ROM properly. This thread on it is still very relevant and useful.

Cannot Boot/Install TWRP On New Pixel 3

So I just picked up a Pixel 3 while on sale to replace my failing Nexus 5 that was literally falling apart. I managed to unlock the bootloader easily. Used a USB C to USB A cable from my Nintendo Switch used for charging the controller for unlocking the bootloader. Next step was to install TWRP and eventually Magisk.
So I followed the instructions to install TWRP from the TWRP website and grabbed the latest image and zip. Initially when I ran the command to boot the image, I would get a "too many links" error. Everything I found in relations to this said I needed a better cable. Odd but okay. I had planned to pickup a new one anyways for transferring music and pictures and such. Got it today, reboot into fastboot and now the command completes successfully with no error. Unfortunately instead of booting into TWRP temporarily as per the instructions, to then install the ZIP for TWRP, the phone boots straight into Android. I have tried the following commands. The first being from the official TWRP guide, and the second being from another guide I had found.
fastboot.exe boot twrp-3.2.3-0-blueline.img
fastboot.exe boot recovery twrp-3.2.3-0-blueline.img
Obviously both result in the same issue. Namely the phone simply reboots right into Android. I am using the latest Platform SDK tools from google, and am using the most up to date drivers for the phone. I am at a loss of what I might be missing. I do see info about boot slots A and B (My phone is B), but nothing in relation to that as far as installing TWRP is concerned. Any help would be appreciated!

If you want, you can downgrade to Android 9 using the factory images with the flash-all script. But, it requires to have the bootloader unlocked.

You are correct! Here is the official blog post I just found:
https://twrp.me/site/update/2019/10/23/twrp-and-android-10.html
This is super bogus and especially since this phone (at least mine) does not seem to have a stock recovery (I get a no command dead android). I think I am going to return this phone. Shame. It's pretty slick, but no way I am going to have one that has no viable recovery!
It sounds like they'll get there, just not quickly. If you read that link closely, this seems to apply to all phones shipped with android 10. So jumping to another phone is not necessarily a solution.
does anyone with a Moto G Stylus have a working stock recovery?

When you go into recovery hit the + and - volume buttons together and it will pop up.
Yes their is recovery software. It's rescue mode.

Shame. It's pretty slick, but no way I am going to have one that has no viable recovery!

why do you need a recovery when you can unlock the bootloader and use the factory recovery to flash what ever you want and they have a nice recovery option using the rescue and smart assistant software for pc mac or lin. i fail to see why you would want a custom recovery.
Has anyone tried flashing a system image yet, just rooted my Metro Stylus and wondering what's good to flash

How did you root? Are there instructions somewhere for Android 10 root?

Where can I get the patched boot.img or did you patch one? Will the device brick when next stock update comes out? It sucks not having custom recovery to have a backup

I haven't kept up with the android modding scene for years so I'm kinda out of the loop, but the general rule of thumb is to not do ota updates unless you're flashing full images with fastboot or using an OEM recovery software (Lenovo\Moto have one here)
As for the patch, I got the boot.img from the recovery software I linked above and installed magisk manager on my phone to patch the img which I then moved to my laptop to flash in fastboot

Hi,
First download Rescue and Smart Assistant from Motorola website, make sure activate the developer options and usb debugging and download your phone's software with Rescue and Smart Assistant (it will find it automatically), find boot.img from inside the downloaded zip file and copy it to your phone, download Magisk Manager to your phone, and patch the boot.img with Magisk Manager, copy patched boot.img to your computer and flash it with adb.
If you have a desire to get TWRP, you should write to Telegram @mauronofrio and raise some donate to develop TWRP for this device.

My moto G stylus if it has an active recovery, when I buy it at 2 hours I unlock the bootloader and root with magisk, I put Xposed and BusyBox, the Xposed does not seem to work very well android 10, Aceves if and sometimes it turns off, buxybox is necessary reinstall again and again every time you turn the phone off and on, and Xposed works 60%, my Motorola G Stylus is from Metro

Same issue, I've had the same provoking anger problem with this phone and previously a Moto e5 plus. It's rooted yet no Magisk module seems to work. This phone I can't even get lucky patcher to work. Android 10 sucks, I miss the good old days of Android 6 and 7.
Anyone else notice the modules not working at all but it's rooted?
Also to do a backup, adb backup and adb restore are your friends.
Rooted you can clone the device at least with adb commands. Slower but it's an exact copy at least.
Anyone with a rooted phone who could grab kernel logs after a fresh boot and post them here ?

Going to flash the patched boot IMG once the firmware is done. Is there an app to catch the log or an adb command?

General Oneplus 9 and / 9 Pro TWRP

Just a reminder for people who only read the oneplus 9 forum and not oneplus 9 pro one:
[RECOVERY] [11] [OFFICIAL] TeamWin Recovery Project
Introduction: Team Win Recovery Project or TWRP for short, is a custom recovery built with ease of use and customization in mind. We started from the ground up by taking AOSP recovery and loading it with the standard recovery options, then added...
forum.xda-developers.com
I tested it and flashed it on my oneplus 9 LE2110 and it works.
Again, as i always have to write to people.
Be careful, only do something you can undo.
Before you "Flash Current TWRP" do a full BACKUP!
Does said recovery perform full back-ups of partitions and restore features ?
Edit
I booted it up . Decrypts perfectly. Backed up modem just to see for myself. Rebooted back onto system . Booted twrp again and it found saved partition to restore. This makes life so much easier. Time to go get a full system backup !! Cool
Exactly. I'm super happy. Now the OnePlus 9 Is finally a good phone. Without TWRP it's just risky.
Im sure some bugs are still there but it looks very promising.

And this is huge for many people roaming around here on carrier variants . Now super easy to restore modems to make switch to global.or eu or whatever.
Hi there, I have a question:
When you have a new device, would the following work:
1. Unlock bootloader
In fastboot mode:
2.
Code:
fastboot boot c:\twrp.img
In TWRP
3. Install TWRP
4. Install Magisk
5. Reboot - then you have Root, TWRP?
6. Upgrades can than be done in TWRP by installing the files and than intalling again TWRP and afterwards Magisk?
Best
Axel
It appears you are asking. If I am incorrect, my apologies. With the 6t (also a a/b OP device)
The process I always used was
1) reboot to bootloader
2) boot twrp.img
3) install twro zip
4) reboot recovery
5) upon TWRP reboot, install magisk
6) profit.
Anytime I tried to go ahead and install Magisk in the same round as installing TWRP, it would install to the opposite slot making me have to do the whole process over again. Ymmv
XDA is Great, and, yet, at the same time: XDA is very challenging.
With so many able to contribute, and the lack of external editing capacity ( unlike SO ),
it's difficult to distill the information.
Okay, Great! There's a TWRP for the OnePlus 9 !
I used TWRP 3.5 and Magisk to root a Lenovo Tab M10, without any need for external input.
The Answer I'm looking for here is: Am I able to install / root / whatever my T-Mo OP 9 with TWRP ?
Does anyone have any definitive solutions ?
Thank You, in Advance, for any assistance !

Is your bootloader unlocked? If yes then you could boot to fastboot and fastboot boot twrp.img. You will have your answer then.

Sadly, No, boot-loader is locked. Never encountered this on both previous OP 6t's.
Hence my confusion. When I walked out of the t-Mo store with my 6t, I had No issues.
I used the wonderful mauronofios tool, to do it All with no troubles.
crash my 6t, forced to take a "9 5g" from t-Mo, and now I am regretting it.
Wondering what has changed, and by whom..? t-Mo change policies, or OnePlus ?
Actually, I've been a t-Mo customer for 16 Years ! First time I've ever had to "Ask Permission" to have my phone, or my SIM unlocked...

You should start a separate thread for all that. Kinda want to keep on topic to make it less confusing for everyone

Does anyone know if I can jdirtyflash the global rom 11.2.7.7 over the EU rom which is currently on 11.2.7.7 in twrp?
I was originally on global (le2110) but flashed EU via update. Now I want to go back to global.

Need help...
I typed Fastboot boot twrp.img instead of fastboot flash boot twrp.img
And that was to boot_a
So then i tried fastboot flash boot_b twrp.img
It wont load the recovery now. Phone wont boot up unless i
fastboot boot patched11.2.7.7DA.img
I even try to install Magisk directly and it fails.
Can I get some help. Dont even wanna restart my phone.
Thank you
All Good Now..... I Figured It Out!
How to fix this
id avoid TWRP if on 11.2.8.8 already. it can boot from fastboot and even install itself as your recovery but it will not mount data. i tried the refresh sizes trick in backup and then the default_password for password to decrypt and nothing. pretty sure twrp mishaps are what bricked my phone last too . thankfully it still boots, just the recovry section is effected
ill try and flash the OTA zip tomorrow. sick of messing with it for now lol
Are we still avoiding twrp
