I own an M2 D2303. I've rooted it with Towelroot, so I'm stuck with Jellybean for now and am thinking of upgrading to Lollipop. I rooted mainly to delete bloatware and some stock Sony apps that I thought were useless. I haven't done any modification other than that (e.g. flashing custom ROMs).
I've found an FTF file for update 18.6.A.0.175. My main concern right now is if this will be safe to flash with Flashtool. I've seen some tutorials for flashing that warn me to backup IMEI information before flashing, but those are usually for if people want to flash custom ROMs rather than stock ROMs. So, are there any extra precautions I really have to take (besides backing up the data on my phone...also, would the stock Backup & Restore app suffice?), or will this generally be a safe process?
Flashing you need an unlocked bootloader too not just root,
Make sure you have 50+% battery and the USB connection on your phone and pc is good also do not use your phone or pc especially the USB ports during this period also it's good to get an exact backup of every thing
You do not need unlocked bootloader to use flashtool or be rooted for that matter. Flashtool will work on totally stock devices. totally the wrong information for sonys EMMA software you need unlocked bootloader which is totally different to flashtool

Thank you very much for the response
Just clarifying that I am indeed not talking about Sony's EMMA but Androxyde's Flashtool. So will this be safe for my phone then? Would it really be necessary to still back up IMEI or take any other precautions?
Sorry, I'm just really clueless right now and I'm worried I might do something wrong.

Hello!
I bought a phone, with unlocked bootloader and root. Z3 D6603
I dont know exactly how the previous owner unlocked BL etc.
But I flashed it to 23.1.A.1.28 lolli, fixed super SU and dualrecovery.
The thing is, I now want to return it to stock, so that i can get OTA updates by Sony Companion, and i have no idea how to do so.
Searched the forums, and found a lot of info, but I dont want to brick or ruin anything.
Do I need to flash stock firmware without root, remove dualrecovery or relock BL, or maybe all of it?
I posted this earlier, and im not sure if I explained it right, I said I wanted a step by step guide.
What I meant was a guideline in what ORDER to do stuff, not how to do them.
Is it enough to relock the bootloader, and then use Sony Companion to update, or do I need to flash something, maybe go back to original recovery first?
Help is sincerely appreciated !
PS: Sorry for posting again, but I dont know how to change the headline/bump the post, and need this done ASAP, or else I wont have a working phone in a few days. ( Change of sim card)

Nothing. If it is unlocked and you dont have backup of original TA partition. There is no help. You can't get you DRM keys back and without them you cant relock to original state. And majority of Sony stock fw simply doesnt provide OTA for unlocked bootloaders, except for the new Sony Concept ROM.
You may try to download Androxyde Flashtool as it provides relock function, however it doesnt restore TA. If it brings OTA back not sure, because I always backup my TA so just try it.

The title says it all, I'm very hesitant to flash anything to my Xperia M2, even FTFs! I'm scared to death one day my sim card functionalities will cease to work (cannot call, no data, only emergency calls, etc). I am aware that the only way that can happen from an ftf is if I flash the simlock.ta by accident, but my question is this: Is there any way to lose sim-card functions, by flashing too many ROMs or FTFs (upgrading, downgrading)?
Naa man, feel safe to flash. I've flashed my M2 like around 20 times with out any issues. But, i screwed my sim functionality because when flashing a lollipop ftf i didn't excluded simlock.ta. Other than that, everything is perfect. So when ever flashing a rom, just see if it has a simlock.ta, and make sure you exclude it. In my case, i have ftf for JB, KK and L, and only the one for L has a simlock. So just make sure you don't flash the simlock.

I don't have simlock on my Xperia M2 but I will ask anyway, is there any way you can back-up that simlock.ta file ?
It's only included on carrier ftf's I think as my m2 is a sim free network unlocked device and I've never removed it from customised ftf's

Ima be honest, i don't know much about "ta", i don't know if simlock.ta is on the TA partition (it might sound dumb but i don't know). I read a post about a guy explaining Sony's recurity system, that as of today no one can hack it. Simlock.ta is part of that security system(which means that there is no way to backup, as far as i know). So in my case i locked my device, and since there is no way to hack the sec system, i'm screwed (according to what that guy said). But one thing i'm sure about, just whenever flashing an ftf, if it has simlock.ta, exclude it. And even more because your phone doesn't have a simlock.
For example, i had an Xperia S, and whenever flashing ftf including simlock, it would just skip it because it was locked to an specific network. My M2 wasn't, so when trying to flash simlock, and succeded and i locked my phone. So as long as you exclude simlock.ta, you'll be safe.
About what i said about TA partition, and Sony's security system, that's what i've read. I might not be completly right.

I see, so this simlock file is somehow encrypted or lock I guess if it cannot be accessed by people like us. Anyway what would happen if I won't exclude it from a flashing ? My smartphone doesn't have any simlock since I bought it brand new in a shop.
I have a huge favour to ask if you don't mind me asking, I want to unlock my bootloader in Xperia M2 and flash it to a custom rom, I have posted it around two days ago and it has 61 views but no one posted anything. I will appreciate your help if you do. Link to my thread.
Thanks
Ta (Trim Area) can be backup and restored if you have root, but can't be modified. There's a thread in sony Cross device that explains a lot of it.

Your phone does not have a simlock, which means, that if you flash a simlock.ta, it's going to lock it. Just like it happen to me, with no way to fix it. And sure, i'll try to answer on your post.

lol, so it locks and you can never use your Xperia M2 ? Pretty lethal if you ask me until you have backup of the original file. Tho I have flashed few times back to KitKat and I don't think so KitKat TFT file has that file. Ok , I really appreciate it ! :good:

You're wlecome, but you can't backup the simlock file. Watch:
1-If you phone is already locked to a network, you can't remove it, not replace it. (You can unlock the phone with a code but that's another story). So if you try to flash an ftf with simlock, nothing will happen.
2-If your device is not locked to an specific network (doesn't have a simlock) and you flash an ftf with simlock, there's when you have screwed your phone.
I went to do the update last night for the first time, I tether off my phone for everything at home so this is my only Internet access. Ota won't download on data, laptop needs to be connected to Internet when firmware already downloaded and prepared, when it reboot the phone to flash it looks for Internet access or no flash. Anyone know a work around for that? I searched and Google but didn't find the answer I need.
Do you have a spare phone you could use as the hotspot?
The only other way I can think of, is to use Flashtool to flash the .ftf file.

I don't want to unlock bootloader yet, flashing ftf on z5 needds UBL or not?
its been awhile since I had a Sony

Flashing ftf doesn't unlock bootloader and flashtool doesn't need an unlocked bootloader.

Evening all,
Just placed an order for the Z5 Compact after my Z has started playing up after 3 years of use,
Basically I had mine rooted a long time ago, and I havnt really touched it since or done any rooting/customization in ages and im drawing a blank..
Basically want to root the Z5 and downgrade to the 4.42 firmware as I have on my Z, as I dislike the 5.51 software the menu options etc looks very tacky for stock Sony layout, and it looks like 6 marshmallow is the same.
Is this feasible or reccomended?
Is there a step by step guide I can follow as I am seriously ****e with computers and all this stuff, I also wanted to learn about and if there are guides on how I can customise the menu etc If I can keep 5.51 or even upgrade to 6.0 and root the device and install a custom theme and change the menu layout etc?
Is this possible at all, I know people have custom software but I havnt a clue on how to go about rooting it let alone customising it...
Any help much appreciated!
There is no 4.4.2 firmware available for z5 series...

Im planning on rooting from 5.51 found a decent guide with use of command prompt so should be easy I hope! Is there an app/program downloadable after root which will allow me to apply custom themes/ menu layouts.
I can only remember Super SU, and theres an aptoide one I had iirc
hey. no offense but i'd suggest you read and learn a bit more about rooting newer xperia devices before you do any mistake.
its for sure no easy thing if you arent much into this stuff. just to mention one thing: at this moment there is no way to root the z5
with locked bootloader. unlocking your bootloader means, that you most probably lose your warranty and the drm keys. those keys
can be simulated by a workaround, but infact they are gone forever without any chance to restore them.
in the end, rooting the z5 now is a process of unlocking bootloader (via flashtool or adb), flash kernel via adb, flash twrp recovery via adb
and finally install supersu via twrp flash.
these should be enough keywords to google for, and/or getting knowledge here in xda forums. once again, i just can advice
you read all those guides twice....

DRM keys arent really required though are they? are they not restorable/ way to back them up prior, ive googled Z5 compact root and ive got loads of links on search results though
Voiding warranty of new device and god knows what will be with restored fake DRM keys with further updates, and no, there is NO rooting Z5 series with having Bootloader locked for now, i doubt there will ever be a method but hope im wrong. You might want to reconsider Z5 series, replace your Z with Z3 that is easily rootable even with locked BL and is on Marshmallow list.

well, the drm keys are required for e.g. x-reality, camera postprocessing, ps controller support and much more. at the moment the drm restore patch works, but who knows, google or sony could counterpatch this aswell. you can only backup them with root. to get root you need to unlock your bootloader first. unlock bootloader = drm key lost forever. you cant lock your bootloader without original drm keys, and with unlocked bootloader you dont have ota updates and pc companion wont work anymore. means, you always have to update manually with
flashtool.
Really?! Cause with my Z I could link up with pc companion and do a factory reset which wiped out the root and everything on it when it froze up..
What about the main thread on this forum... is there any other reading or threads/guides in relation to this
I've started learning about custom firmware and Xperia Z3 customization a day ago, since I couldn't stand the stock firmware. My current goal is to flash Lineage OS 14.1 on my D6603. And in the post it says it require an Upgraded Unlocked Bootloader. Now I do understand the Unlocked Bootloader part, but I'm not sure about the Upgraded part. And I've done some read around the forum and found one that refers to it but I'm not sure. Doing Google search didn't show too much information about it? The reason that I'm not doing more research is I'm kinda tight on time these day. So much appreciate to anyone can help.
Also my D6603 is currently running the latest MM build with Root access and Dual recovery installed.
The updated part refers to the latest official bootloader from the Sony Firmware .291.
It requires Sony Software called "EMMA" (instructions are easy to find).
Connect your device and flash the latest firmware to get the bootloader on your device.
Backup all your data in case something gows wrong (especially the one on internal storage as it gets wiped in the process I think).

Really appreciate your reply. Would that allow my phone's bootloader to be unlocked too? Because I've just read around a bit and according to the Sony's UnlockBootloader site, I can't unlock it. And I just don't want to be stuck with MM build.

if it says "unlockable - no " in your secret menu I guess it isn't ... but I never had to investigate this.
