Want to root and have questions

Hi everyone,
I am really tired of waiting for SD Card support and USB support on my Xoom, so I have decided to take matters into my own hands. First let me say, I love my XOOM, but I am by nature an inpatient person. My wife would say that of course is NOT my only character flaw. LOL! That said, I purchased my XOOM on launch day and have been waiting and waiting for the 4G upgrade and the SD Card slot to become functional. I have now grown tired of the wait and would like to root in order to get the SD Card functional, USB support, overclocking etc. This is my first Android device, although I have since switched my phone from a Windows Mobile device to a Thunderbolt. I have no experience rooting, but I am comfortable with tech and computers, so now I would like to embark down that road. However, I just did the 3.1 update over the weekend and was reading about a way to flash 3.1 on a rooted device without losing your root. This is what I would like to do, but after posting a similar thread in the Motorola Xoom Forums, the suggestion was made that I post these questions here. There was some debate as to whether it was possible to root my device right now since I already did the 3.1 update and the feeling was that I might have to wait until a rotting solution for 3.1 was available. I am not quite sure if this is the cased, so I was hoping for some direction from the experts here.
Can you guys point me in the direction of a link on the net that will explain rooting and how to do it and let me know if I can root my 3.1 Xoom? YouTube video would be ideal for instruction, but I would like to read up on the basics and the nomenclature so I understand the terms that are thrown around pertaining to rooting. I also would like recommendations of what kernal you all recommend and what other apps I will need, such as, Titanium Backup, Clockwork Recovery, etc. in order to achieve these things.
Thanks a Ton! I am very excited to join the rooting community.
Steve
Hey mate, the "ROOTED" community not rooting first off lol. Moving on tho. Check this link out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89lQpJJ7zBw . Rooting a device is typically pretty simple and easy. The fact that u want to learn is ofcourse greatly appreciated on a site like this as those that just want it handed to them dont tend to get far. If u need additional help feel free to pm me. I dont have a xoom but the vid i linked seems pretty straight forward. I have a MT4G

Hello, I'm new and pretty dumb about smartphones but I'm very motivated and excited to have found "you guys". I like what you guys believe in
"P.S. A little bit more about us. XDA-Developers was founded on the simple principal that SHARING IS GOOD and when many people SHARE what they know, EVERYONE benefits. We exist upon this Ethos, we RESPECT each other, we SHARE with each other, we do not judge one another and we HELP all who ask. We believe that while some may have more knowledge than another, none are more important."
I will show every member that I'm humble and grateful for any help that comes my way. I promise to ALL MEMBERS that I will be a "GOOD" member and give back to the site at every opportunity.
I bought a g2x used with 2.3.3 and I love it except the battery life. I heard that if I downloaded the 2.3.7 the battery problem would go away. My problem is that I know nothing about this type of "stuff" but I'm VERY excited about learning and starting new and TRUE relationships with other members. PLEASE HELP me get this LG g2x straightened out.: I need to learn how to re-root this phone. I have to make4 sure that I don't harm what good I already have. If I can't get better battery life from this phone I will have wasted $250. I just finished "fighting" Lymphoma cancer and I can't afford to throw away money, especially in these amounts. Please help me and get to know me and I the same with you.
Thank You, Sincerely, Cgarland

Hello sir. All you have to do NVFlash CWM and you're all set to flash a ROM.
Follow this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cy9on64jAZs
Just the part where you do the NVFLash. Once that's done upgrade CWM to the latest version, you can find that in the dev section.
Then you just simply DL CM7, wipe your phone then flash your desired ROM.
I didn't really go into details in case you're already familiar with CWM and flashing, that's just a gist of it. But if you need more help and have no idea what flashing and CWM is then let me know.
GREAT to hear from you.
Howd ya know? I have no idea what CWM or flashing is! I want to thank you for writing back to me. I'm MORE than excited about talking with the members of this site. I'm having dental work done at the University of Washington school of dentistry and I have to go to bed since I have to get up at 6:30 in order to make it to Seattle from Olympia by 9:30. I hope tomorrow we can continue to talk about these and other issues with these type of devices? Thank You....who are you? I want to learn how to attach a video to my post like you did for me. You have no idea how excited I'm about this site and talking with you guys. The member that just answered my question is totally freaking me out with the knowledge that you have about my phone. What I think your saying is that I need to get a cord that goes from my power outlet on my phone to a usb plug on my computer? Please explain, in detail, what you mean when you say " All you have to do NVFlash CWM and you're all set to flash a ROM." Is that where I empty my phone and then re-load with an updated version? Do I have to protect my phone? Did this phone come with 2.2.3? What do the numbers mean? I hope I can help you with something in return? Thank you VERY MUCH Sir. I look forward to talking with you tomorrow...cgarland
Is this g2x a good phone if I can get the battery to last at least one full day? I like the phone and all that I've read about it (except the bad) but it is my first smartphone. Seriously mackster248 I want to keep this phone. Can I make this phone work properly so I will be happy with it? Will the battery life improve with updates? What is "ROM: CM7 or MIUI" I'm not kidding, there is a guy on Craigslist that did exactly the same thing to his g2x, that is he has CM7 and MIUI on his g2x. Here is his post. What do you think mackster248?
Title says it all, unlocked for any GSM carrier and rooted with cyanogen mod 7 and flashed with a cool MIUI rom making it faster and better looking than ever.
Will come with HDMI cable, black hard rubber case, 2 chargers and original box. 9/10 condition front and back it had a screen protector on but I recently took it off because it made the phone look like crap. It has a CLEAN front now.
MOSTLY LOOKING FOR TRADES but $275 cash nothing more nothing less is good. Looking for an iPhone 4 unlocked I dont care how many gbs just has to be unlocked, same condition, with charger at least.
Looking for:
Iphone 3gs 16/32 gb unlocked and jailbroken w/ accessories and some cash on your side.
LG thrill unlocked
Iphone 4 unlocked
HTC sensation
All offers are considered just shoot me what phone you have.
206 four53 eight713 will send pics through text!
Teach me what it is you both are talking about mackster....PLEASE! See that where he say's what you said?
Thank You, cgarland
i have a problem as host's, it's very helpful, thanks
Well CWM is a recovery that's needed to flash custom ROMs. You need to follow that video to install CWM via NVFlash. Just do that portion first then I can help you with the rest.

Cwm is clockwork mod recovery.. it is a modified recovery that allows any rom to be flashed to your phone.
Recovery is a utility built into the phone that lets you do various tasks like install different modified versions of android reset your phone to a "new" state... deleting all the data on it (except android itself)
To flash a rom means to install it...
Cm7 is cyanogen mod 7 which is a "team" created rom that has a lot of added features that the stock Android does not have check out cyanogenmod.com for more details...
Miui is pronounced my U I and is another "team" created version of android that very much changes the look and feel of android...
As far as everything else... browse the development section and just read... that's the easiest and best way to learn
As far as battery life... there are a few roms that improve battery life... but there is no miracle solution. It's just a sacrifice that is made in liu of speed and performance... what I mean is... a dual core 1ghz processor uses battery... ya know
Also... if you need help try and post in the right section ... general or q&a ... don't ask questions in the development section .. for some reason a lot of people have a huge stick up their rear and rather than being helpful... they just get all rude and tell you that you are posting in the wrong section and are rude...

Is this a good phone renocivik? I see where you talk about battery life, what should I do? I need to get some rest before I write anymore stuff here. I will talk to you guys soon. Thanks for everything and will get back to you tomorrow.....cg
What are you saying? I truly don't understand what your trying to tell me. Would you please explain cfj521 ? Thank You cgarland
I think I can put flashing and cwm into simpler terms for you.
The word "flashing," in this case would mean downloading and installing a new ROM to your phone.
A ROM in this case, is simply a developer made android system that they make for the better and enjoyability of your phone.
CWM is an abbreviation for "Clock work mod recovery."
CWM was made for you to make adjustments to your phone, and install new software, ROMs much easier.
This system will be the head quarters of making adjustments to your phone.
-------------------------
Now, about getting NvFlash onto your device.
NvFlasher is, I believe, also a developer made program specific to our Nvidia Tegra devices. And also does make installing CWM much easier.
(Nvidia Tegra 2 is the processor for our G2x)
There is a section around here that explains to you how to use NvFlash for your G2x.
Which, I believe will be in the Android Development section in our G2x forums. Probably at the tippy top in a sticky forum (Highlighted forum).
The instructions may be a bit hard to following, but hang in there and just follow the instructions for NvFlash, refrain from stuff that isn't for now.
I hope I enlightened you a little bit on what we all talk about around here.

How to really get started

Okay this may be redundant but let me try. I'm new to this site and new to the whole androids modding.I was thinking of buying the star x26i or the star note i9220 dpad. I'm really not sure where to start once I get phone. If I can't get the direction I think I can figure out the rest or at least search to get info. Any help will be appreciated.
Get started as in what exactly? Are you talking about rooting and custom roms?

as I see you are interested in ROM development then here is a best resource on this site to help you on this subject
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661770
I know this is a modding community so the majority of answers are just going to say root root root! But in all honesty, if you are brand new to Android, get used to stock for a bit before you jump into modification. Spend your time reading about your specific device while you play with it and if people are happy with their devices rooted and the process isn't too intensive for you, then give it a shot.

Thanks for all the input. I was trying to be sure if there was a step by step process on what to do.I am fairly new to android phones and want to learn the ins and outs. I'm searching for a new phone now and it seems like the ones I like need something to be done to them before I can use them. So I was trying to be sure of the process before I screwed something up. I like the suggestion of learning the phone 1st which will probably lead me to a name brand phone.I'm currently with boost mobile so my options are limited. Once again thanks for the info.
1. Root
*unlock bootloder* optional
2. remove bloatware
3. read about custom roms
4. go crazy modding
Enjoy stock for a while, Oh and heres a tip, On the process of rooting, You can easily brick your phone.
Meaning Of Brick - It will no longer boot up; You have to replace it.
Well, actually I'm just looking
I googled "Rooted phone, what next?" and got several helpful sites and threads. Most of which lead back to XDA. Although I had a fairly clear goal in mind; I wanted ICS.

I got the x26i and I rooted it with Bin4ry it worked really well don't forget to install drivers.
Leave a thumbs up if I helped you.

[Completed] help getting into android development please?

An absolute noob looking for help and teaching, not ridicule and insult "please!"
ok, guys. So I've been thinking about it and over the last couple weeks after testing rom after rom on my lg g2 I get bored of them and they don't work the way I want.
*Ultimate goal of today, learn how I can contribute to my android community other than donating, I'm talking about developing
I'm really new at this and by really new I mean I have no experience at all. I've tried to write programs like "hello world" and still get confused. I need someone who can point me in the right direction so I can start doing something productive for myself and the community.
I want to get help understanding this and take it piece by piece, slowly and once I'm all caught up I'll have select few people beta test and I'll then after release it to the public with a weekly stable build which I will test for my phone weekly. "these are just my goals, not my expectations, I'm going to need help to get there" so my question is
Can anyone help me?!
PS, I've tried doing it on my own and googling it and it just doesn't make any sense when I read it.

Hi,
Its great to see such enthusiasm! But i will say developing your own ROM is hard work, especially if you have little experience
here is a post i made for another thread for those who are interested in learning
POST #7 - How to begin the long process of becoming an android developer
but really the best advice is go slow, start small, be able to create a Hello World project
and absorb all the wisdom at XDA - University
best of luck!!

eager newb seeking experienced android development veteran to learn from

hey, hopefully im posting this in the right section. im still pretty new to xda as well as the fascinating world of root access, custom recovery's and roms, and such so please let me know if this post is out of place and i apologize ahead of time if it is.
anyways, as for my original reason for posting to the forum, hi everybody ive somewhat recently discovered the possibilities of root access, custom roms and the like. not long ago i was in the market for a new device and came across an offerup post for a galaxy core prime SM-G360T1 (the metro pcs variant) at the price of $35 obo soo, personally never being the biggest samsung supporter i offered $20 n continued looking for another decent LG to hook up to my metro service. long story short they accepted my offer n deals like that shant b ignored so i purchased said core prime n spent the whole night searching through the xda forums to learn all i could.
soo, here i am now the proud owner of my first galaxy device, a rooted SM-G360T1 with a good working touch version of twrp (my preferred choice in custom recoveries) but, as ive come to discover only one very aptly named custom rom exists for this particular galaxy and though i completely respect its creator for all the time & effort he put into releasing the first working pre-rooted, de-bloated custom rom available for the SM-G360T1, i personally decided to stick with the stock rooted firmware and do the de-bloating and such myself.
ok sry about the mindless rambling there i may have gotten a bit carried away. now, as for my point in posting this in the first place. i wouldnt feel right asking others to solve my little issues for me so im not gunna try to pressure anybody into puttin out more roms for the metro core prime. instead, if at all possible i would merely like to meet someone more experienced and well-versed in the art of android development who might b interested in maybe taking me under their wing so that i might get the opportunity to learn the ways of the code and hopefully one day have all the knowledge necessary to develop my own custom roms, or maybe even eventually get myself a couple of apps that i can b proud of onto the play store.
to summarize, i am but a young aspiring software developer will very little knowlege of or experience with code, tho was raised on home built pcs my whole life so i know my way around a desktop pretty well hardware-wise as well as software-wise, im very willing and eager to learn, whilst having already developed through my previous experiences, a healthy fear of bricking yet another phone which has resulted in an increase in the frequency with which i backup my data, as well as a certain acquired hesitation toward attempting any uncertain actions without first doing the appropriate research on the given subject and im hoping to find someone willing to pass some of their vast knowledge down to me whom i can consider to b my teacher, professor, sensai, master, whichever u prefer, and whom i would never hesitate but to thank and give credit for any and all software that i may one day develop as a result of the lessons they had taught me :victory:
aaaanyways, this post turned out a lot longer than i anticipated so, if uve been able to stick it out and make it this far i am both sry for taking up so much of your time, as well as truly grateful to u for having taken said time to hear me out. well, have a wonderful day everybody and i hope to hear from my future sensai soon. until such time i shall b waiting paitiently thnx again for reading
oh and also just wanted to add that if anybody that knows what theyre doing happens to be in the midst of making/porting any new roms for the SM-G360T1 samsung galaxy core prime metro pcs version and needs any help with like testing or wutever let me know, i got a good twrp nandroid backup ready to b restored n just in case of an emergency i still got odin and the rooted kernel that i used to root it in the first place saved onto my pc
