Just seen this article on CNET regarding the Motorola brand is to be phased out.
I really hope this does not mean that future devices will be non-stock Android as this is one of the key reasons I chose this phone.
What are your thoughts on the matter?

That sucks. I hope not. Was pissed when Google sold it overseas......
Much ado about nothing. Companies are always bought and sold. And you misinterpreted article: Motorola is being kept as a brand name as in "Motorola by Lenovo" etc.

Lenovo does some super shady stuff with their computer business. There was the whole superfish thing, and they got caught hiding junk in uefi bios that comes back after a wipe and clean install. Lenovo has proven they can't be trusted. I sincerely hope Moto mobility makes Lenovo better, but I can't shake the feeling that Lenovo is just going to make Moto worse.
It's sad, but I expect lenovo to ruin Motorola like they did Thinkpad after they acquired IBM's computer division. I've heard some troubling things about layoffs and restructuring Motorola's mobile software arm too.
Hopefully moto cranks out a few more good phones before they're assimilated into the lenovo machine. I guess pretty soon it will be nexus, Sony or nothing if you want a modder/developer friendly phone. Maybe add One Plus to that list too.

Even better!!! That means all the moto x pure 2015 will go on clearance or have good sales on them, plus motorola played us by not adding a fingerprint scanner to a 2015 device. Same feeling we felt to find out that moto x had no fingerprint reader is the same feeling they're feeling at the office for this news, it just happens.. i wish them well... getting ready for them liquidation sales!!!

I wouldn't plan on liquidation sales. They're keeping the "Moto" brand for their flagship phones. The consumer will likely see absolutely zero change throughout this process.
As someone who has been through 6 corporate purchases and sales in the last 8 years while keeping my same desk I can say that there is no way you can read more into this story than a name change.
If it ain't in the headline, folks don't read

Yep...nothing is really changing on the consumer end.
There were leaks of the new moto x doubt its going to disappear
So if I go with motorola specifically the moto x pure edition, what changes things for me if I own this phone and after motorola changes to lenovo? Will updates & upgrades be still released frequently & etc?
What are your thoughts?

Odds are pretty high that nothing will change on our end.
I think motorola brand will disappear, but Moto series will continue to be produced.

"An official statement from Motorola clarified that statement, saying that Motorola Mobility as a company will continue to exist and be part of the Lenovo smartphone business. But the product themselves will now carry the Moto brand as it is more “hip” in keeping with its market."
Pretty much all of these articles with clarifications indicate Motorola Mobility as a company is not going anywhere.
This should clarify:

Hi everyone,
After reading this article, and the recent blaming game between LG and Google over low supply of Nexus 4,
http://www.theverge.com/2012/12/21/...rking-with-motorola-to-design-its-own-x-phone
Theoretically, if LG would make the Nexus 5 from their own flagship device of Optimus G Pro, most consumers would definitely choose the cheaper version Nexus 5 and it would definitely be a business loss for LG flagship device'slow sales (Optimus G Pro)
I think it only make sense that Google would manufacture their next flagship device by their own OEM, Motorola Mobile division. and perhaps if this will be true. Motorola brand would return its good press impression in the mobile tech world.
what do you think, guys?
I think Google will tap Motorola to build a stock Android device eventually. But when ? Most think maybe end of this year, possibly the Nexus-Five.
Others say no, Google is afraid of pissing off partners like Samsung, HTC, Sony, etc...And we might never see a Motorola Nexus.
Time will tell, but doubt we hear any news until Google I/O in May, and even then don't surprise to hear no Motorola news. I think it might be 2014.

I think Google/Motorola will be cranking out phones in a year or two.

Lot of news and rumors building around the Xphone recently. I think it WILL be announced in May. It'd be perfect time. Announce Android 5.0 on Xphone. Will be double breakthrough for Goog
I was hoping for an announcement at I/O, but if Google's CFO was speaking truth and not misdirection, it seems like the chances of that happening are less than I originally hoped. I'm running with my Toro right now, and it is sufficing thanks to some great ROMs (see MMuzzy's at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762846), but I would love to get my hands on newer tech. The real question right now for me tho is, which carrier will that be with??
They are gonna be separate device imo. :silly: nexus 5 will release in october-ish and "x" phone in summer. I want to buy any fro th either of two (would prefer nexus) which releases quicker. I'm not buying the nexus 4 cuz i'm waiting for either the nexus 5 or motorola "x" , hopefully the motorolla x will run stock android.
They worked together already a while back when creating the XOOM By Google and it was a complete success, I wouldn't mind if the next Nexus phone be Motorola... But I always wanted even after realizing that it's almost impossible; an Asus phone .. "ASUS Nexus 5 by Google" Ohh that sounds sweet, BUT...
Very interesting... This could be a great thing or a horrible thing depending on if they let moto be moto or if crappy lenovo get's their way. What do you think?

This is great news especially for those of us who live in countries where motorola is absent. Lenovo has much better global reach.

The good news is Lenovo has better supply chain management. The bad news neither company has very good customer support. Even the supply chain part assumes Lenovo will support
with resources. It frankly seems more like a graceful exit from Lenovo brand in the phone market. Lenovo did no favors to either company with the absolutely poorly timed layoffs. A corporate
saboteur could not hope for better.
A strong Pure/Style release would help, but already Moto Play is in supply issues out of the gate.
Looks very tempting to me. I've always liked the Moto X line and the added features it brings. I kind of like the JBL module too. I'm going to keep my eye on this phone until the end of the year and make a decision. It's probably going to be between the Z, OnePlus 3, and the new Nexus.
I will think about it below $400.

I've recently moved over to an iPhone with my wife. I still have a handful of the newer Android phones, but the Moto Z doesn't really pique my interest like the One Plus 3 does. Then again I'll probably wait for the next Nexus and see what happens with that.

Come on over to the Moto Maxx forums, we have CM13 and Resurrection Remix being actively maintained
---------- Post added at 03:41 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:34 PM ----------
As for what I think of the Z:
They need a much larger selection of modules if they want to make an impact on the market, and they need to continue making phones that support these mods.
I don't plan on buying one right now, simply because I'm in college and don't have money to throw at new phones... but if this Droid Turbo (Verizon's "special" Moto Maxx) breaks, the Moto Z is high on the list. I've always had Motorola phones and I haven't had any reason to look elsewhere yet
Im really thinking about it. I currently have an LG g3, Samsung galaxy s4 and Samsung galaxy s5. The g3 have good memory ram management, but it has an IPS screen (which is good: no image burn like in amoled; and bad: no as bright as Amoled screen). The s4 is okay but ram managment is not as good as LG G3, the same with the S5, however, both have Super amoled screen ( which is good: very bright screen; and bad: it might develop burn in image if not careful). sooo the moto z/z force has 4 GB or Ram , and have Amoled screen. It also have sd card slot, and it might not only be limited to those modules. The LG G5 was my first option, but this one seems to be less prone to have built quality issues, unlike LG g5. but i'm also having my eye on Project Google Ara, but that one will be for 2017. Still, i think the modular design of Moto Z/Z force is one that can be truly called a modular phone. there is no need to remove battery (it is impossible anyway) to use the modules. in addition to that good amount of mAh it comes with by default (at least the Z force. So chances are 70% that i will buy this one over the g5

Aaah yess. I mean. I could use it without root but having root always makes it a lot better. Although, the modularity part would be a little tricky if custom roms are released. Something tells me that there is more to it than just "plug and play" or in this case, attatch. But... I think they will release the tools (or make it open to the public so they can come up with ideas for new modules) this will make it easier i think
Price
This might be a rumor but if this rumor happens then... Well, It will be a better deal than the LG G5. According to this website: https://motog3.com/moto-z-moto-z-force-moto-mods/
The price for the Moto Z will be $499 dollars, and for the Moto Z Force $549. If this happens to be true, then I like the way they raised the price just a couple of bucks more for the Z force unlike other devices which raise up to $200 bucks more for a better version let's say. Anyway, I've posted a picture of what it says.
I hope those prices hold, but on Verizon with Droid slapped on them I kind of doubt it.

As someone who loved their moto x pure edition, but shattered the phone on space mountain (disneyland)... I've been holding out for the new moto x announcement. Instead we got the Moto Z announced in it's place, while it seems cool... it seems to sacrifice quite a few features I really enjoyed and I'm concerned about losing. Particularly the audio jack, I'm also worried about the longevity of the hold of these magnetic mod plates... I'm in a bit of a bind, I can't really keep using my friend's old bind, but i'm unsure if I'll want the moto Z at this point (although it looks pretty awesome). I'm debaiting on picking up another moto x pure since they're on sale right now and giving away a free moto 360 sport which I wouldn't mind playing around with. What are your guy's thoughts?

If the audio jack is a problem for you, and you loved the Pure Edition so much, I'd say get it again now since you do get the free smartwatch. However keep in mind that it's the Sport, which is the worst of their smartwatches, and the Pure Edition is near it's end of life, especially considering Moto's recent history...

Slash Gear had an article which mentions future Nexus phones, not just tablets. http://www.slashgear.com/google-pixel-vs-nexus-key-details-of-the-not-quite-dead-28457902/
Unfortunately, there isn't much information or proof mentioned, and I don't know the reliability of either one of them. Are there other Nexus rumors floating around out there, or is this just wishful thinking?
ive had the g1(dream), nexus one, nexus s, galaxy nexus, nexus 4, nexus 5, nexus 6, and the 2012 nexus 7. its 100% that the nexus isnt dead until google says its dead. BUT.. at this point, im believing that the nexus will be dead :crying:
Yeah. The guy from 9to5Google said later his opinion was there probably wouldn't be another *phone*. I'm guessing he was referring to the new Huawei tablet.
Too bad. I bought my wife the LG Nexus 5X last year and have been following the development of T50/Sailfish/Pixel since early this year. Unfortunately, it would almost take a miracle to get me to buy it now.
It's high time to replace my beloved Nexus 5. Was hoping this year's Nexus device would be the upgrade of my dreams, but I'm with you. If the $650 price point is true, I can't see anything to get me to buy Pixel. Uninspired design at a premium price.
I owned a couple of nexus phones before but they're not really relevant now these days.
In a year Google will realize their Pixel major mistake and revive the Nexus!
I don't know. The Nexus line wasn't exactly a super seller, and I think Big G is now interested in profits only--from phones and services, as well as whatever they can harvest for their focus on AI. If you look in almost any industry, there is a market for cheap garbage and uber-expensive stuff. There really isn't much for the best-bang-for-your-buck. I'd like to think there'd be another Nexus phone, but it'll be too late for me. Not just because I'm going to get an HTC 10, but I've been rather disappointed with most news I've heard about El Goog since they reorganized under Alphabet. However, admittedly, some of it relates to their ongoing anti-trust investigations over the last couple of years. If it lasts for a while, and if Sailfish OS gains traction, this HTC 10 will most likely be my last Android phone. I'm not happy with Big G's recent direction.

What I read is that Google has "no plans" for future Nexus devices. Plans can change. The Nexus line is/was a platform for development. It's no accident that each new version of Android incorporates more and more features created by the independent, enthusiast development community (ie: CyanogenMod).
No new Nexus phones this year, now they're doing this Pixel thing. I think it's going to fail, and fail hard. There's no way it's going to be successful at those prices. It's not as naively ridiculous as the Amazon Fire phone, but it's still way too much money for a phone that doesn't have the features and functions of other flagship phones from Samsung, LG, Apple, etc. Most of us here enjoy a stock or near-stock Android, but we're an extremely small part of the smartphone market.

Guys, I'm considering buying this phone after almost 2 years with Mot X 2014. My question is "how xda friendly is Moto X 2015?" Unlocking bootloader and flashing ROMs on Moto X 2014 was piece of a cake.
I'm on custom Android 7 based ROM now, performance is great and the only issue for me is storage. 16 Gb isn't sufficient.
Manually flashing custom Oreo ROM eventually on Moto X 2015 would be something I expect to do later next year... if I decide to buy it.

hope to see more Banger features in it

Nougat is still a little buggy for this device. Have no idea if it ever gets unofficial Oreo. Also, it's just a little old. Don't get me wrong, I'm using this phone, but if you want to buy another device, choose different model... from different company.

Honestly... Don't bother with a 2 year old device. If you like Moto, go Moto G5 Plus or G5S Plus, 3-4 times the battery life, equal performance, support for probably the next 18 months or so, etc. Or if your budget allows, go with something better, there are lots of options.
I would not buy another Pure, even if I could get a new one for under $100.

Well there's the Lenovo P2. LOL But it's hard to find phones with AMOLED screens at that price point. I was gonna say just go with the Mi A1 (LCD) when it comes down in price later this year because it's the best stock Android bargain you'll find. Why do you want OLED so bad anyway? The Moto X Style isn't OLED, but it's screen and colours are highly saturated, even for me. I think this is something most IPS panels can accomplish with the right settings. I have to say, though, the Moto's screen is really good for an IPS panel.
