[Q] why does the first day on fresh installed rom always have longest batterylife - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been noticing a trend across all my devices: the first day on almost all roms is always the best in batterylife.
Usually people say let a rom settle(which I find bull**** cause it should work getgo optimized). I however found that first day, or first charge with all my apps and regular usage pattern battery is the best.
Does anyone know why that is and how I can switch off anything that stops this?

I notice that too.. But I think is just because the first day you install any ROM you haven't all the apps installed. The days after maybe you begin install new apps that start drain softly your battery..

- "let it settle" is total bs. never did any difference for me.
- having many apps doesnt mean less battery life.
greenify some fishy apps which are optimized badly or consume battery in standby.
soon people come up with "give ur phone fresh air" after installing.
srsly...

Its because when you install apps such as whatsapp or Facebook, they automatically startl in the background causing you cpu to work a little more which results in a slightly higher power draw. When you first install the apps on a brand new phone, it won't make that much of a difference but developers constantly update it which could increase CPU background usage without you even knowing.

yeah over time youre right, but I havent notices updates the next day. So I am not sure regarding the app updates.
In regard of them starting in background, they also do that on first charge, in fact they do a full sync as well.
Of course I wont be uninstalling and reinstalling to get that first day batterylife, but if its the apps, then they are really inefficient.

Just a couple random guys who helped convince you that you had a valid theory but in general the thread hasn't had any knowledgeable person participate probably cause it's pure placebo. You just had a random idea. I've personally never experienced it through numerous phones I've had and battery life is generally greater for me when I'm at home on WiFi or when I have good network so its a combination of factors.
I don't mean to offend you but answers aren't as easy to find as making a theory and finding people who agree. That's just confirmation bias and you're not getting good answers until the theory has really been evaluated in a number of scenarios and critiqued. To make matters worse you disproved it already while on Omnirom

not really disproved it. I noticed it on all android phones plus all roms.
Now I found a rom where deepsleep is legendary. I havent confirmed full charge cycle, sot and actual battery appart from deep sleep. It doesnt disprove my theory.
Fact others experience it makes it a fact for those experiencing it.
Just because you dont experience it doesnt make our experience less valid then your experience, respectively the reverse is also true.
This thread is about demythifying the experiences that are like mine.
So far no theory that you contributed explains our experiences, so please if you dont contribute towards solving, then dont say anything more.

Though I don't like greenify and prefer not to use ****ty apps like facebook at all,
which would explain why my battery life did not change a bit from kitkat to lollipop to marshmallow.
I never had issues with deep sleep or battery drain which was caused by apps.
Only time the drain increased (for everyone!) was when Google decided to **** us for months with their Play Services 7.5 Update.
They fixed it with 8.xx which was on the same level as 7.3.

I had it without those versions google play as well. I even tested it without apps, at least on one device other then this one.
I did notice apps contribute a lot to battery usage and also idle drain. However I notice it on all apps. Just as on all roms. Except Omnirom as I stated it. On stock cyanogen and cyanogenmod its the worst. As well on stock roms of all the devices I have owned

Which current ROM / Kernel combo gives you the MOST battery life?

If you're going to include statistics, PLEASE also try to include your SCREEN ON TIME, BRIGHTNESS, general use, wifi and lte would be good too.
I'm currently on CleanROM 3.0 and love it but thinking of switching to Lite version. worth it for battery savings? halp?
"BEST OF" Threads are not allowed on XDA. It sucks, I know. Because it'd be nice if there could be a place for some discussion... a "this rom is nice but that rom has better battery life" kind of thing
CleanROM is a good ROM, and Scott is an active developer here in the forums. Not sure how much better battery life you'll get from the lite version. I would imagine it'd be a lot because bloatware never helps battery life.

i'm confused, i'm not allowed to ask people for recommendations on what ROM has given them these supposed 5-hours screen-on times? I get 2-3 hours and my brightness is at 20% with wifi on on cleanrom 3.0 and im worried I have a defective battery. what's wrong with this question?
Unfortunately XDA Rules don't allow us to say what is the "best" in a specific area. You can ask for what ROM people are running and what screen on time they are getting so that you can determine it yourself.
Even though I'm all for following the rules I'm kinda confused why this rule was ever passed. In the real world there are always "best" of things. It seems this is just an ego protecting type of rule. However it would cause people to fight and say "No I have the best" and etc. People can't handle freedom!

I slightly want to kill you, mostly out of jealousy but also for not mentioning your brightness level, LTE on/unavailable, SYNC on/off, usage etc.
But this is enough to make me flash lite tonight after a total discharge. i'm at 44% with 1 hour 30 minutes screen on time. 10 hours 30 mins normal time at 2/10 brightness. (one notch above lowest setting)
is it possible i have a defective battery? or is Lite really that much different?
What's the procedure for switching from Standard to Lite? Backup all apps with titanium, flash dalvik and data cache, install via clockworkmod, then perform a battery calibration?

It is possible on CleanRom, I have so many other apps running at the moment that I get no where near that anymore. When you look at what he is running in his screenshots besides the screen he hasnt used much else (3% talk time for example). Now I switched between all three of the cleanRoms through the earlier development and did not notice a huge drop from DE to Lite. I went back to DE because I like it stripped of sense and their is still the debloating. I use FB and twitter so I wasnt going to stay on Lite for long.
I get roughly 8-9 hours a day on 25% brightness 3hrs of screentime but as I said I generally have a lot of other apps running that drain my battery that you may not run. (WiFi on most of the time and in an LTE area). My main drain comes from commuting to work in NYC when the service keeps dropping, which i read drains your battery quicker and it def appears this way. pansi (text messaging app) tends to use a fair amount of cpu power which helps drain my battery as does Defender II (a game).
Personally unless you are going to flash the lite version it wont make that big of a difference, it will depend more on what apps/screen brightness you are going to use.

Your correct,I don't set my screen brightness it's auto,I also don't use social apps like Facebook, etc. I do quite a bit of browsing and flashing. I've made some backups and flashed some mods and some of the apps I use don't even show up, why they don't I have no clue. I don't play mobile games though, which probably take up a lot of usage. I've had so many phones and roms over the years tell a lite ROM fits my agenda. It's still to each own. Just know I'm not just sitting and looking at my screen for over 5 hour of use lol. I'm also in and have LTE which shows in screenshots.

I found the cleanroms have really great battery life. I gave up Samsung skyrocket because of the poor battery life but with this phone and with that rom in particular I was very impressed. With a full charge I can last all day with a good amount of use (phone calls, texts, auto syncing, and email) and still have 40% or so at days end.

Have you tried any of the other settings (performance/battery, batterysaver)? I'm currently using cleanrom DE, but I'm a little underwhelmed by the battery life. It could be that I wiped everything and spotify/chrome/redditnews is downloading everything fresh (they have been using quite a bit of data). I guess my usage these past two days have been a little out of the ordinary.
I'm very interested with sick sense though. The battery carrot is very enticing. I'm a bit worried about the journaling though. Will it make it difficult if I want to switch back to another rom?

I haven't tried the other profiles yet. I wanted to start off with this profile to see what this rom can really offer under the highest settings. Based on what others have said about the other profiles, the battery saver profile is where it's at if you want maximum battery life out of your phone. As far as flashing other roms and journaling, I don't have any experience doing that because this is my first rom. Also, I don't know if the disabled journaling on this rom impacts flashing other roms and am curious to know as well. Anybody knows if the disabled journaling will keep me from switching roms? I am new to this stuff so bear with me here....

Known Android Myths

Hello I usually don't post stuff like this, but whenever I see someone answer something, they are not telling the fact, but the myth. These myths are well known "solutions", but never work, since they're myths So I'm here to tell most of the myths that people are spreading... If you have any other myths that you'll like to talk about or if one of my myth is false, feel free to post about it . So without farther ado, lets get started
Task Killers: As much as this is obvious, people still uses it. So much, that it is annoying. Android handles apps and tasks well. However, there is an exception, and that is when the app constantly freezes or crashes and you need to restart it. If that's the case, there's a "Running Apps" section, where you can force close apps under system settings. So you won't need 3rd party Task Killers, EVER
Battery Calibration (Draining then fully charging): People thinks that this is good for your battery life, but it isn't. The only thing that this does is make the system read the battery percentage more accurate. Doing this once per month might help you improve read battery % better, but it isn't necessarily at all.
Wiping battery stat when the phone doesn't charge up to 100%: This myth is quite annoying. I dunno about other forums, but in Galaxy Nexus forum, quite a few people use this myth as a answer. Wiping battery stats DOES NOTHING to how system reads battery%.
Anti-Virus app: This is another myth that is obvious, but used by many people. You don't need anti-virus apps, unless you download a lot from untrusted source (4shared, because it is uploaded by people, not the company). If you know (And you SHOULD) what you're downloading, anti-virus is nothing.
Benchmark: People get so hyped about benchmark results... And I dunno why... It's just a number, I tell them. It wouldn't matter in daily usage, I tell them. But they do it anyways... Benchmarks are just numbers people. My Gnex can be as smooth and fast as GS3, but have a significant difference in benchmark tests.
Quad-core is faster than dual-core: While this isn't a myth, it isn't 100% correct either. You see, in daily usage, the phone only uses and needs a little bit of CPU power. For example, Facebook app doesn't use full 4 cores. That's just plain silly. However, when it comes to heavy gaming, yes, that 2-extra cores will help. But overall in daily usage, you're not gonna miss almost anything, because you have dual-core...
You need to clear cache and dalvik when updating/flashing a custom kernel: This is not true. I flash Franco kernel without clearing anything with NO problem.
You need to fix permission whenever you dirty flash: I don't hear that too often, but people still believes in it. Fixing permission isn't necessarily, unless you're experiencing random force close or crash.
Turn GPS off when not using: You do not need to do that at all. Phone only turns on the GPS when it needs to. For example, when you open map app, you'll see the GPS icon on the status bar, but when you exit out, you won't see it anymore. This means that the GPS radio is off. OFF. No need to waste your time turning it off and on.
Switch to 2G (Edge) when screen off to save battery: This is probably one of the biggest mistake people do to save battery. Yes, 2G does consume less battery than 3G, but constantly switching between them just burns the battery. It is just pointless if you ask me. Either stick with 3G, or stick with 2G. Constantly switching between them will be the worst choice.
Undervolt as much as you can to save battery: This is not true. Undervolting to a certain point can help you extend your battery life, but doing it too much will drain more battery instead of extending it. Also it makes the phone less stable, so make sure you know what you're doing and don't undervolt like crazy
iOS apps are more optimized than Android, and is more stable: This is part true but mainly not. Yes, dev only needs to worry about 2-3 screen size when making apps, which means that apps can be optimized for the screen size, but that doesn't mean much anyways... Also did you know that iOS apps crash more than Android? Now you know
iOS is better than Android : Lol wut?
Hope that cleared few things up. Again, if you got a myth of your own, feel free to post it in the thread!

Some interesting stuff
Sent from my SGH-T989 with Cyanogenmod 10 Alpha Power.
Quad core uses more battery than dual-core: this confusion comes from the intuition that "you'd need more power to run 4 of them". In fact, the results are closer to the opposite: on those rare occasions where multiple cores are used, they allow for faster processing (hence more sleep) and less intensive. Mostly, however, it just doesn't make a difference.

We should send these in to mytbusters so they can prove/disprove the facts. I personally use appkillers because the newer ones to make a difference on my underpowered P500. While these apps to start up, they consume less memory when started in the background and allows for faster start up once killed by the task manager.Android does have impressive memory management, but nothing is infallable.
Battery stats is just silly, if you keep charging till 90% then unplug, you can make it appear that your device can run for days on one charge, so that is very misleading.
Benchmarks are worth noting when it comes to gaming performance. On my device ICS definatly scores lower than gb, yet it runs smoother day to day. Playing games is tragic simply because the drivers are an issue on this device for ICS.
You dont need to clear the dalvik cache or normal cache to flash a kernel, the kernel modules are loaded at boot. The linux core behind android was designed this way. Clearing them when you flash to a different rom eg: AOKP to CM9 its a good idea to flash the cache since this could retain incompatible files between roms.
Myths arent annoying, people clinging to them for no reason is annoying.

I also had P500 and app killers did almost nothing at all... Maybe it's just me?
That's not what I've meant when I said about battery stat.. Some people's phone just doesn't simply charge all the way up to 100%. And others just tell them to clear battery stat, which does nothing...
Benchmarks ARE pointless in my opinion. I personally don't think that noting Benchmark scores are needed... Also they are not very accurate either. What I mean by that? Well, in real life (including gaming), even if you overclock, the performance isn't so huge. But in Benchmark scores, little overclock increases the score a lot.
I know myth itself isn't annoying, but people spread them. Like crazy. And that's what irks me

Whats Your Trigger

Alright Guys i needs some help ive been trying for days to trigger where the heat issue is coming from. Now im not a Vet but im not no noob. ive searched countless threads from android Donut to Jelly bean. so far i havent found the full triggers yet but i have found that if your ram is running around 50mb left over and extensive downloading example long period download like a ROM the heat starts to spike any where from 78 to 111.2!!!
so my question is does anyone else experience this as well im currently runnign slim bean/hotcakez NO oc runnning 384-918 ive tried every rom/kernel and i still experience the same issue and depending on the heat my phone SMELLS LIKE BURNT Bacon lol help please

Have you tried going back to stock with Odin?
Not sure if your issue is the same as mine, but after I went back to stock it seems to have corrected the issue. It still seems to warm up a little when I'm using it a lot (playing a game, looking at the LOL Droid app, but not, oddly, playing a video) but the battery issue seems to have been solved.
I know that using the phone is going to make the processor run faster, and that faster processor speeds can definitely contribute to heat build up. Do you have a case? If so, take it off. If not, maybe give the phone a break every now and then? I don't know.

Yes sir reverted several times to stock and back to another even happens on ICS personally I think its my phone but wanted to know if anyone had similar issues. Thanks for the feedback

I had a over heating issue a while back... Turned out to be a run away wake lock. Media scanner. I had to Odin back to stock and rebuild back to the custom rom to totally get rid of it.

You never know...it could be the weather around here
I would install Better Battery Stats (if you don't already have it installed) and monitor it for wakelocks to see if something is preventing the phone from deep sleeping.

Agreed az is known for pure heat not humidity thank god lol but I will check my wake locks again again and try to find what's cause media scanner only runns once at boot otherwise doesn't need to run. But I think I might switch back to stock and see if it does it on rot stock
thanks guys

[Q] updated kernel to use with Slim ICS ?

I am running [ROM][4.0.4] Slim ICS(T959V)-UNOFFICIAL posted by beastmode, Question is there a more updated kernel I could use with it ?
I am thinking either [KERNEL]Proton Kernel build2[ICS][TFQ] or [Kernel]ICS/CM9 LZ Kernel from Team Fah-Q (Updated 20OCT12)
I am very happy with this ROM and GPS is working great (after a few hacks from other threads) but battery life is the worst !!! I lose 5% when using Waze/GPS plugged into the car charger and about 20% overnight just sitting there, I have tried all sorts of battery apps as well as turning off wifi at night with no luck. So I am thinking that a new kernal would help.
I only use the phone for GPS and Web browsing.
Has anyone used these kernels and with what ROMS ?
Interesting in upgrading not bricking my phone and installing everything from scratch
yes i am a newbie so apologies in advance ! Thanks.
Neither of those kernels (nor, really, anything else) is going to make Waze or any other GPS app stop using as much power as they do. If you wanted to change your scheduler and governor, those might make a difference... but anything with working GPS is a Herring kernels using the same paths to talk to the GPS.

Thanks for taking the time to answer. Even if GPS is a battery sucker what can I do about the fact that leaving the phone on takes so much battery ?
Could you suggest other stable kernel/ROMS for the SGH-T959V that support GPS and have decent battery life ? I like the simplicity of ICS and since all I do with this phone is browse the web and use GPS I really don't need any bells and whistles.
Thanks.
The two best ICS at the moment are probably Ultragen 1.01 (be sure NOT to use 1.00) or HebMIUI, which is the only ICS that still gets irregular updates.
The big thing to do with Waze is, if you don't NEED to stare at the screen, turn it off and just listen to the audio directions. Sucks down a LOT less battery that way, though it's still a bit painful.
Regarding general ways of improving battery life... look into Greenify if you haven't yet. Can tell apps to stop running in the background if you don't actually want them to. Just remember NOT to Greenify Waze if you don't want it to shut down with the screen off, or your music app, or anything else you actually want to use while you're not actively looking at it. Oh, and avoid Greenifying your email too. Though it's funny, it's not a good way to find out about new messages.

Best rom for the S6? (From a battery perspective)

Hi
What is the best rom from a battery perspective right now and how much will it increase battery life? Right now I get 3-4 hours on 4g and 5-7 hours on Wifi on stock, rooted with greenify. Will a lite rom help even more on battery? Also, which would you say is the best right now and why?
Thanks in advance
Questions like these(best rom bla bla) are not tolerated every rom here is a result of hardwork and efforts from devs which are all unique in their own ways, would suggest you to try and use what you like.

You won't notice a difference in battery life from Stock to custom, except maybe a decrease due to wake bugs maybe.
Your battery life is pretty good.
Rule of thumb, ROM's might allude to having better battery life than others, but they almost certainly do not.

Well no idea either. I asked what the best rom was from a BATTERY perspective. Some are for speed, others battery and some features.
I fully understand they're all hard work.

Uhmm... The community? Well as far as I see now there is no such issue's in the Galaxy S6 forums, I come from the Galaxy S2 community where any similar questions(literally anything that started with BEST ROM...) are flamed by other members and occasionally outright locked or removed by the moderator's.
I myself never had an issue with those kind off question though.

The question is pretty much not answerable for a number of reasons.
People get different results due to how they use their phones and what software the load and run on the same ROM, and to answer your question someone would have had tried all the available roms for enough time to form an opinion.
Lastly, this is a general S6 forum so people here are using all kinds of different variants of the S6 making the comparison even less likey.
I have a stock rooted ROM and am quite pleased with the battery usage on it, YMMV.

Based on what? Reaching 8+ hours SOT? If no, then the answer for now is XtreStoLite.
In theory, the lightest ROM with the least amount of bloatware may extend your battery life. But in reality, phone usage is the main culprit of battery life. I have tried different ROMs with my old S3 trying to extend its battery life. But in the end my efforts are in vain as I put too much work for a very little gain of less than 30 mins. This also applies to the S6. Modifying usage (i.e. turning wifi/bluetooth when not in use, working with dimmer screen, etc...), buying extra battery or powerbanks and chargers for charging on the go and anywhere all did the trick of preventing phone usage interruption due to a drained battery.
