Hi, a few months ago I decided to install a custom ROM on my Sony Xperia Z1. In order to do that I first followed [1] to install a custom recovery (I think I followed the tutorial pointed by the link, but I did that a few months ago so I might be wrong). This way or another I installed a custom recovery - now when entering recovery it says: PhilZ Touch 6.59.0, ClockworkMod v6.0.5.1. Unfortunately I didn't have time to play with it and finally I didn't even install any custom ROM. So my Z1 is now on 14.5.A.0.270.
Now I'd like to use the standard OTA upgrade to move to Android 5.1 (14.6.A.1.236) and my Z1 offers me that. But once downloaded the upgrade cannot be installed for some reason (I suspect it's the custom recovery). When the upgrade procedure starts it asks me to reboot the phone, after a while the Android guys and a progress bar shows up, but it stops after like 10% of the progress bar. Once booted back to normal operation the phone says there was an error upgrading software.
So I'm trying to figure out how to bring back the stock recovery hoping that it would solve my problem. I thought about using Xperia Flash Tool (aka Emma) to flash a generic ROM for my Z1 which would hopefully also contain a stock / generic recovery but the tool requires an unlocked bootloader. Unlocking the bootloader would force me to loose my DRM keys and so on. I don't want to follow this path. Is there a way to restore my phone back to its original state before installing custom recovery so that it was able to use OTA upgrades? I'd simply like to use all stock firmware to avoid further complication.
I know it's probably strange to ask on instructions on going back to pure stock software on such forum but you're my last resort.

Wow, this recovery's install is pretty much a toolkit! What I don't get is why it doesn't offer to back up the original recovery. Oh, 'cos Sony does not have a stock recovery.

First of all I would like to mention that I really searched and obviously I did not find anything, so please do not spank me for not trying (I used search box and google).
Here's my question, I already have on my beloved Xperia J a version of Cyanogen Mod 10, but I would like to know if in case of update I have to repeat the same process (flashing the boot.img using flashtool etc.), or maybe even downgrading back to ICS, or do I have to only download the Cyanogen Mod 10 and press the update button in recovery menu? I am wondering about that because previously I had HTC Wildfire and back then everything was much much easier.

You just download new fxp cm10 version and flash it through cwm recovery.. without wipe data partition...without flashing ics...
What about installed apps and data? Is everything there after update?
Alright so I have a 2013 Moto G, and basically in the past while on KitKat I've rooted my phone, given it custom recovery (TWRP), and messed around with the ROM (changed it to CM, PA and a few others and back). Now I've come to update to Lollipop and of course I need stock recovery to update my phone via OTA, and when it first prompted me to update, I had TWRP and I didn't really think, I just updated, this sent my phone into a bootloop, rebooting straight into TWRP every time I turned my phone on. Luckily I had a backup and I just restored to that and that fixed it. Recently I've been trying to fix the correct stock recovery for my phone so I can update, and I found some MotoTool AIO thing, and that changed my recovery back to KitKat stock (or so it says), now when I go into recovery it LOOKS like stock, can do everything you could normally do with stock recovery, but when I came to update it, about a quarter of the way though the update process, it errors and reboots my phone. Luckily this time my phone recognizes it has errored and just cancels the update instead of sending me into a boorloop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. To update to 5.x you need to be 100% stock. my Sony Z1 (Germany) is still on KK 4.4.2 and I'm looking forward to update to LP 5.x because my new car will support "Android Auto" and I'm excited about to test what can be done with it (below Android 5.x only Mirrorlink is supported which does by far not offer as many options and supported Apps than 5.x). That is the story about my intention.
I tried to use the "search" to find other equal/ similar threads and found tons of posts saying "Recovery". I did not find any which lead me to an answer. So here I go.
My Z1 is rooted and I had the dualrecovery version 2.0.0 installed until yesterday. After reading this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z1/general/stock-rom-14-5-0-270-customized-sg-t3113543 I thought it would be a good idea to start with an update of the DR as the recommendation is version 2.8.3. I went ahead and downloaded the latest flashable version of the DR 2.8.9 and flashed it through the existing recovery. The installation worked smooth and easy. But ...
Now my Z1 is not booting into the recovery anymore. No matter what I try. After turning it on it vibrates and the green LED still turns on but pressing vol +/- does not bring up the (any) recovery menu. Allthough using the NDR utils app ends in the same result.
So I decided to download the 2.8.3 installer version and flashed it with my phone connected to the PC via USB. Again the installation finished without error messages but I still can't access the recovery.
Unfortunately I did not make a backup of the "chargemon" file (as recommended in the other post) before. :crying:
So I'm lost at the moment. Someone told me that he made a similar experience and that he found that the version of the DR he used was somehow to new and not supported. He was able to install an older ("supported") version again and the recovery was back up working like charme.
I tried to find my previous 2.0.0 DR version but I couldn't.
Does anyone here know which version of the DR I can use with my device and where I can get it? The NUTs download section does not have such a long history ...
Can I do anything else without having to restock, re-reoot, etc. my phone?

Well, what worked for me was to go back to stock root it and so on... That took me 2 days and was real pain in the ass. Try to delete your recovery partition in fastboot. I am not sure how it is with stock ROM because I always use aosp roms. If you can and if you won't brick your device install custom kernel with recovery. I'm using m5. Tho even with kernel installed my recovery didn't work. But then I used nuts duall installer and it worked. NDT Utilis has an option to choose which recovery to load. Hope that helps. I have a original rom kyocera hydro c6530n rooted and used lucky patcher and messed things up royally from there after installing or trying to rather modded play store never worked all kinds of google errors gapp, service, no network connection and than no play at all applied all (as far is google concerned) fixes. never back to normal need less to say i uninstalled reinstalled all kinds of play stores reset rooted device to later find out I dont have any clue what I am doing obviously. I have reset to factory and hard reset and now I am stuck in bootlooper because I thought that re flashing with flashify would be the answer and yes I may have to get a new phone because wow but I flashed a boot image from the system uid I think I figured they wont give me an option if not viable. So now i am boot looped I do think i know that i can download my original jellybean 4.3 and flash to this device which is another matter and how would i do this i thought odin but not for kyocera and i find that there is no custom roms etc or recovery for this device.
My quetsions are
1. where do i get the download for jellybean factory image
2. how would i install from pc (my computer recognizes it still)
3. can i install a new rom persay and again back to #2

I tried systemless root and after that my phone was only showing sony logo for sec. I tried to install this rom:

it kind of woks but not for daily use. After that i tried CyanogenMod 13.0 but I need original system and with it my phone only loops with sony logo. If anyone knows hot to flash/install original android version or rom that could be used daily it would be huge help.

There are a few stock roms in your devices Android Development section in the forum you could try. Here's a random one I spotted that seems like a good option:

The key is to go with a stock, or stock-based, rom for the best stability.
Or you could reflash the actual, official, stock rom from Sony themselves. They have a tool called Xperia Companion that can reflash the latest rom on any Xperia device with a locked bootloader: http://support.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/xperia-companion/
If your bootloader's unlocked, you might be able to use "Emma" instead: https://developer.sonymobile.com/open-devices/flash-tool/use-the-flash-tool-for-xperia-devices/
