Phone gets laggy everyday - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
My phone gates very laggy on daily basis. Something I never had on my Nexus 4. Not sure if this is ROM or Kernel related or something else completely. My RAM is not maxed out when this happens, and I really don't know how to troubleshoot/resolve this.
So far I tried I various Kernels, currently on bluspark. I always only used Chroma ROMs, so I'm not sure if I would get this behavior with other roms. I tried various schedulers and Read ahead buffer sizes.
Any advice/help would be appreciated.

Maybe flash back to stock MM for a couple of days to see what happens?

Yeah, was trying to avoid that since getting everything back takes some time even with google restore and titanium. I went ahead and flashed XtraFactory rom (close enough to stock I guess) and really wanted display manager to work so I flashed Blu_sprk Kernel. Phone already got laggy and eventually crashed... I'll set Governor to Ondemand and scheduler to CFQ (I believe that's stock settings) and see what happens....

If you have already constantly reflashed and nothing works fine try to go nuclear:
Reinstall firmware via adb or a toolkit, that fixed a lot of issues for me.
If you dont want to
I recommend you to free out RAM/Memory and Optimize the Database
try to use SD Maid, Go to settings > Quickaccess and enable duplicates
Settings > App Corpses and then check all
now run the quick access.. once everything is cleaned down reboot the device and see if it helped.
If nothing significant happened, factory reset but again if nothing happens i suggest you go nuclear and wipe everything out by reflashing firmware.

It's never laggy even after 2 years of everyday use.

Thanks for telling me about sd maid. Pretty cool app. Ended up buying full version last night.

It's ALWAYS laggy. Just a matter of perspective. The amount of power these phones have, I don't understand how we still have 5 skipped frames in every animation.

It cleaned up over 2gigs... Performance... Not sure. I changed ROM, kernel settings, and did the sd maid all within couple hours. Phone runs great. If anything, sd maid definitely helped in cleaning up unneeded files.

unless you reflash with master clear i do not know sorry i am still new to this
If you installed Froyo , voodoo is long gone , as Froyo overwrites kernel , files you see on your SD card are nothing more then left overs you can delete them any time you want.
I can say that compared to stock 2.1 and using stock 2.2, 2.2 has been faster for me on every level. 2.2 is not as fast as any version of cognition I have ever used so it depends on your comparison I guess.

Me too!
I'm in the same boat buddy. I'm running the latest Cognition with the ext2 lagfix from SL4A and it's almost unbearably slow. I know I must have done something wrong or there is some kind of error because it's just painfully slow. Also I have a CPU monitor and for some reason my CPU is almost always above 90%. Another weird thing I noticed is that even after I kill off the extra apps with Advanced Task Killer, they seem to open back up almost immediately. For example if I kill 12 apps, and then kill again 5 minutes later, there will be at least 7 or 8 apps running again without me opening any. I'm excited to have Froyo, Flash is rad, but I'm hoping DG comes out with a new Cognition soon because I know something is wrong with my set up right now.
At first, I have restored all my apps with Titanium (apps only), and the phone was so slow as to be unusable. Without those apps, it's fast enough. Obviously, many of those aren't fully compatible with Froyo. Will have to reinstall the apps one-by-one, and see what happens with each one. PITA, but at least the things will be more stable that way.

so its the apps huh... and we all thought froyo was going to be awesome
Can't be the apps... I installed the apps one by one after flashing cognition 2.2 and it is really slow. It was painfully slow at first, but after some use it seems that the phone "got used" to froyo or something the lag isn't THAT bad.
Maybe there's a pattern between the phones that lag and the ones that don't.
For example, mine has the 3 button combo disabled and yours?
I absolutely love FROYO I previously had an iphone 3g and jumped over to the captivate with 2.1. I wasn't really impressed with android at all until this 2.2 update. I am currently running 2.2 with the one click lag fix, also I used the alter minfree settings within the one click lag fix which sets a limit on the amount of memory the phone can use at one time, I set mine to strict seems to work well. My phone is faster than its ever been and i have used all of the various roms prior to Froyo. Try getting rid of the task killer and just use the alter minfree settings within the one click app.
Battery life seems much improved as well
You are running a leaked ROM with a bunch of weird crap in it. Kallsyms shows a whole bunch of tuner functions that I'm pretty sure we don't have and some other stuff that may be garbage or a product of the newer kernel source, I'm not sure.
This is probably just a quicky test port of the I9000 ROM so I wouldn't worry about speed (or stability) yet.
Sherpa
I have a Captivate without the 3 button issues, and it's really fast on 2.2 Cog with lagfix applied. All my apps installed without issue using TiBu. I even had the JPK euro rom installed on it with our JI6 kernel, and that worked fine too, but I couldn't drop the bloatware.
And for the guys who insist on using a task killer, and are always worried about using too much ram: http://lifehacker.com/5650894/andro...ed-what-they-do-and-why-you-shouldnt-use-them

Im pretty sure that people have already said not to restore your backups from Titanium. It has been reported to cause alot of issues. At least dont restore core system components.
No speed issues with mine.
My steps:
Re-flashed to JF6 first.
Completely wiped my internal SD card
Installed COG 2.2
Ran the LagFix from SL4A
Reinstalled TiBU and apps
Reconfigured settings/sounds/etc.
Does the email app work well for everyone? For me, it is barely usable, it always hangs and seems to slow everything down. I had to remove my exchange account because just having it there made the phone constantly lock up and freeze, and now even my yahoo takes forever to simply open the inbox.
I'm running 2.2 without Cog or any lag fix and it's incredibly slow and has horrible battery life. I'm going to try to recalibrate the battery and see if that will make it more accurate. More than likely it wont change anything.
I'm just holding out for a stable/near-final Cognition 2.2. I know it has the potential to be very zippy.

Root and do the one click lag fix. Exchange email is plenty snappy afterwords. I still don't have calendar updates, but at least I can use the email app.

Mine was the same way. It didn't even function most of the time (emails wouldn't load)
I'm running the OCLF now and I hope it makes a difference.
Edit: I'll try this to fix battery issues as well
Code:
adb shell
mount -a
rm /data/system/batterystats.bin

My phone is completely freaking out software-wise :/

So, about 2 or 3 days ago I downgraded back to Froyo from the latest Gingerbread leak (too many bugs.) I did so with GTG's Ulimate unbrick, and then I flashed the pre-rooted/ pre-CWM stock ROM to it. I updated to the latest UCKH1 to be up to date, and then I restored a backup I made in ROM Manager a few weeks back. After that, I restored all my apps with Titanium backup. Now on to the issues. First time around my phone literally crapped out software-wise. It was literally force closing everything, texting wouldn't work, the Advanced power menu was gone except for Power Off. That only started after a full day of use with no issues whatsoever. It was completely random. Well late last night, I factory reset and put my apps back on again. Well I woke up this morning to find that my phone's suddenly being dumb again. Except this time the only issues that I know of are, the Advanced power menu's gone except for Power Off, and the home button will not function AT ALL. If anyone has any idea what's going on, or how I can resolve this, please lend a hand.

It sound like every time you encountered a problem it was after restoring your app with TiBu. Are you just restoring apps or apps&data? See how your phone runs without restoring apps. Try restoring apps(without data) and see what happens, or just manually download apps again. Could be a problem with data from the apps.

I was wondering the same. I have indeed been restoring apps with data. Didn't want to lose my Cut the Rope progress But, they may end up being my problem. I've always gotten away without issues, so I guess it's about time for one to happen, haha. I'll try it out after work today and post how it goes.

Most likely the problem lies with the backups being from a GB rom and now you are trying to put them an a Froyo rom. Probably saves it differently or something.
They tell you "Not" to use the backups from Titanium as they can cause issues, I reinstalled back to Stock Froyo as well running the latest UCKH1, When you do the Update to UCKH1 my advice is to go to Settings: Privacy: and do a Factory reset to fix the clock problem The clock will appear screwed up and will correct itself even when it's on Automatic Mode. Otherwise all is fine downgrading from GB Rom. Install all normal apps as usual, Screw Titanium my advice is just save the .apk file for the app in a Folder on your External SD Card, that's my quick way of reinstalling all my apps back regardless of losing settings.
you can also use tibu to restore single apps with data, you can try the ones you want to save progress and see if it causes issues. just stay away from system apps
I've never ha a problem with TitBU, as long as I restored "missing apps & data" ONLY!
same here, regardless of android version or even restoring on a different device. the only time i have seen issues is when i accidentally hit restore all apps with data, including system apps. thats when i got the constant fc and crashing

You know, now that I think about it I actually made a backup from UCKJ2. That's more than likely my problem. Funny how I'm looking for all these complicated things and it ends up being something easy. Haven't restored anything, so I'll wait a day or two and see if everything stays like it should, and then I'll restore only what's needed to ensure it stays that way. Sorry it took so long to respond, had work, haha. Thanks guys all the responses were much appreciated.

[Q] Apps constantly closing for no reason

This has been happening on basically every rom that I flash. It never happens as soon as I flash, but will start happening within a few weeks usually. I am running Octane right now, and absolutely love it. It is very fast and I have amazing battery life. The last week I have been using it have been a nightmare though. Almost every time I open messaging and dialer, they will instantly close again. It isn't a force close though. It is just like I hit the home button right after opening them. This is extremely annoying, does anyone have a solution?

Constant force closes on phone after Heimdall GB leak?

So, I am pretty new to this whole flashing/rooting thing and I apologize if I have already made a stupid mistake. I have tried to read and understand everything thoroughly, but I am not a terribly smart person
Anyways:
I had a stock Infuse with Froyo and used the Heimdall One Click Return to Stock 2.3.6 and everything seemed to have gone over pretty well, but I keep getting force closes for random things, and I can't even open half of my apps. I click on them, they just sit there and hang, then force close. I tried to update them all in the marketplace, but still, nothing.
Also, when typing in landscape mode, sometimes the delete key seems to hang a bit or won't do it at all.
I tried searching around and found no answers, so if anyone has one, please let me know!! Thank you
Other than the force closes and mild delete issue, everything on that rom has been wonderful!
One final question: This isn't a problem, but I was under the impression that 2.3.6 would allow you to change texting layouts or colors? I tried sifting through most menus that I could think of, but can't find an option. Am I just missing something or is it not included in Gingerbread?
Actually...it seems like my battery life is shot, as well.
About 2 hours ago, my battery was at 100 from charging. I unplugged it and sent 3 text messages and nothing else. I even used the task manager to close any open apps after, but now I'm at 90 percent battery. Before the update, my phone could easily last 48 hours or so without a charge if I used it very little.
I was curious if there is a setting or something I am missing somewhere that is causing the battery drain? I know that sometimes when you root it, you have the option to change what speed the cpu is at, and it will drain your battery quicker.
Could that be the issue?
I am sorry for all of the questions, I'd just like to figure this out so that I don't have to factory reset it and go back to froyo :/
Have you tried doing a factory reset from the settings menu may help with force closes and crappy battery be warned you will lose everything on your sd card when you factory reset may want to take out your external or back everything up on your computer
After every new rom flash and re-sync, I think there is an intense demand and cpu and regeneration of background cache and data builds.
This would seem like a battery drain. In most instances, battery life will even out over several cycles. - Assuming that the settings on the custom rom is placed properly.
I have seem some bad tweak settings when I have looked over many claimed tweaks to save battery when they do the exact opposites.
Pure Stock rom have many monitoring crap and background running apps collecting data that it will take up a lot of battery from just sitting.
I don't know which stock package you've used or which heimdall version or if you ran the heimdall frontend on the leaks.
If flashed properly with re-partition using the 1click adam outler created for the uckj4 and my uclb3, there should be no FC's.
It should be pure stock with everything working "perfectly" as intended by AT&T.
rooting only gives you access to your phone..it has no bearing on battery.
Overclocking - OC - may increase battery consumption/ Running stock - should not be an issue.

I used your One-Click back to stock 2.3.6.
As far as battery, I figured it out. I went to check battery usage and apparently google music (the cloud music app) had used up a whopping 87% of my battery. I never use it, so I just uninstalled it and my battery has gone back to normal.
I still have force closes, but it seems to be less frequent if I don't restart the phone and just leave it idle.
As far as rooting it, I just used superoneclick, then installed the one-click return to stock 2.3.6.

hmmm..I'm not sure how you did it but the package I made w/ UCLB3 is not rootable with SOC. UCKJ4 is possible, but I don't think you want to run that build.
If you wanted to run a rooted uclb3, dman has made a rooted rom already.
If you're running stock uclb3..completely att, not deOdexed, there is no root on that...there is recovery if you used an insecure kernel...but no root...unless you installed busybox and superuser binaries yourself.
fc's is not right on stock uclb3...you may want to start over.

Hmmm. I must have done something wrong then
I just ran the executable .jar file in the one-click return to stock thread, but maybe it's force closing BECAUSE I had rooted it before? I don't even care to have it rooted, I was just under the assumption that I had to have it rooted to install anything like 2.3.6 on it, but I think I must have misread something. I just want GB because I am tired of waiting for ATT to roll out the updates haha.
I'll try starting over, but does that mean that I have to format to stock, then use the 2.3.6 install?
Again, I apologize for all of the questions.
just run the package. it should take care of everything else.
if you want to run a custom rom, run the entropy in post #2, go into recovery, wipe and flash the rom you want.
it's that simple.

Okay, I'll give that a go!
Okay, well I reset my phone back to factory state and tried again, and everything seems to be working this time. No silly force closes, all of my apps work and my battery life is back to normal.
It must have had something to do with the root that I did before. Either way, things are going smoothly! Thank you thank you thank you!

Question OneUI crashes

Does anyone else have crashes for oneUI ? Fort me it happens like twice a week on my exynos model.
I'm so disappointed with this phone to be honest. It's stutters now and than and to many crashes in various apps.
I'm assuming must of it is due to Samsung chip.
I have also whacked for nightly restart even thought it's stupid i think.
Did this happen from day one?
If not it's likely an app, update or settings issue.
Still that's pretty unstable... it could be a hardware issue.

try factory reset with disabling of trashy preinstalled apps (disabled 144 on mine ), then install your apps (not restore)
adb app control
It wasn't happened on mine ( SD variant). Try to factory reset the phone, download and re-install all of your app instead of restore them (even with the phone setting). It may help to solve issues
I appreciate the tips but seriously guys, factory reset and redownload of this many apps i have is like a weeks work! I only download the stuff i use (and 99% payed apps as i hate ads). Not to mention i might loose some data thanks to how Android save data. This is not 2010. I hope modern phones are more stable then that.
If this was iPhone then i could simply restore easy but with Android its not as simple.
If there is no other way i wait for some more samsung firmware updates.
It has not happened this week so lets see.
I notice some specific apps are specially bad like LinkedIn hangs allot. Tapatalk wont work even with this forum and gives error. Maybe some of these apps make the launcher go nuts....
Try using a different launcher, to see if that stops the crashing
