unroot confirmation

hey all, currently have a g2x rooted with cm7, and i've been looking to unroot;
just to make sure i dont do anything stupid, i wanna run this through with you guys:
first i would flash the stock 2.3.3 ota rom for g2x
then use the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847 (one click nv flasher) to get back to lg stock recovery by clicking 'flash stock recovery' (do i need to dl anything extra for this?)
then im done, correct? if i boot up, ill get all the stock rom and apps and bloatware and etc back right?

edit: how do i know which version of clockwork mod i have installed? im not sure if i did the external sd support or not...

You've gone back to a stock ROM, you've gone back to the stock recovery, but you haven't actually unrooted.
Whichever method you used to root, you should be able to use that same method to unroot.
UPDATE:
I was originally under the assumption that your 2.3.3. ROM was rooted. If it is stock you should be fine.

sorry for bump, but i read in tga_gunmans post that ppl should flash a rooted 2.3.3 rom and use superoneclick to unroot...would my method work too?

No your way would not work because the stock OTA by xboarder is rooted. Do what tga_gunman said. Flash the rom, use my unroot zip in CWM (deletes root files) and then flash the stock recovery. Busybox will still be on the phone but nobody should be looking for that.

Easiest way to confirm if your not rooted would be to install Superuser from the market. It'll tell you if the phone's not rooted.

There is an app on the market called Root Checker which is free. It will tell you if you are rooted or not.

Thanks for your help jboxer. Forgive my noob-like understanding of rooting/unrooting terminology. Hopefully you'll be able to understand what I did.
Last night I went ahead with the unrooting process on my G2X which was running Gingerbread & CM7 following this youtube video (can't post link due to noobiness: watch?v=ryGIv8KQVIE), the order that this guy goes in is:
1. Wiping all cache/user data/formatting in CWM recovery
2. Restore to a barebones stock data in CWM recovery
3. Flash to go back to Stock using OneClickRecovery
4. SuperOneClick to unroot phone
What I ended up doing was restoring my phone to the backup that I created on my sd card when first rooting my phone rather than download that zip file in the video description which is a completely fresh start.
However, whenever I flashed to go back to stock using OneClickRecovery, it gave me that total barebones fresh start where I had to completely set up my Android from the first start screen and I lost my backup. Also, when I go to unroot the phone with that zip file, I don't know how to 'install from zip' after I've lost CWM Recovery menu. So, I flashed back to CWM so I could recover my backup from my SD Card again and install the 'unroot.zip' that you linked and it ran alright and I restarted, but I still had 'SuperUser' in my App drawer telling me that I was still rooted.
I ended up calling it good last night after spending two hours on it. I left my phone rooted, with CWM recovery still on my phone, but I at least I had my backup Gingerbread image with no CM7 mod. So, my phone is functional, but I would like to complete this process of unrooting completely.
Could you perhaps give a little guidance and clarity to what I'm missing or not understanding? I'd love to unroot/flash back to stock recovery/remove all evidence of rooting AND keep my recovered backup that I have before I even started rooting my phone.

I hate me [n00b question]

So I have a I-9020A with at&t. I have rooted followed by flashing -su and roms instructions using instructions on the net. But after following that process and then going backwards (flashing stock w/ no root locking bootloader) I have realized after that I have more questions.
So first: Unlocking the Bootloader erases the phone. Unlocking the bootloader is needed to flash CWM and SU. I have read many many things about NANDROID, how is NANDROID different from CWM?
So I guess my next question is: How does one remove SU? In the process of rooting and flashing CWM and ROMs I make a backup prior to going to deep... that Backup will have SU, I have unrooted, but SU is still on the phone and I cannot seem to remove it.
Another question is: where are the data files on the phone for apps like Plants vs Zombies? I would like to move them off my phone prior to root, though I'm not sure if that is possible (is it?).
The last question is: If I wanted to muck around with ICS and the source code, is it as simple as flashing the source as explained on the google site? because they make it sound rather easy.

Sounds like you should have read more.
When you open the bootloader (the lock) it will wipe your personal data off the phone (not SD storage). This just means you get it as if you just bought it from the store. There is no way around it but happens only once and you'll never have to do it again. Unless you lock it back
Once the bootloader is unlocked you can now flash a custom recovery such as CWM which will let you manage and back up your phone with whatever ROM you want/have.
Once recovery is on your device you also have to root the phone. For this you'll need a zip flashable file with the superuser apk and SU binary files. Flash it in recovery and you should be good to go.
The last step is to install a ROM of your choice. You can just run what the phone has and it will work fine and even take updates without a problem. However, every time you want to flash something you'll need to flash CWM again because the stock image flashes the default recovery on reboot. There is a file you can delete to prevent this from happening. I forgot the path so look around. However, I would recommend you flash a stock ROM which already comes loaded with good stuff and all other things are done for you Just stop by the development section and pick a ROM you like.

i was going to write something similar. toonhead85 you should do a bit more research and reading before you start hacking on your phone. youve hearts in the right place, but youre not quite ready just yet. at least take small steps at first

A little more clarification or nandroid backups:
Nandroid is a specific type of backup of the phone's system files. I think that includes system rom and radio. I not sure if any data is included in the backup. You should make a nandroid backup of the stock rom bbefore you flash any custom roms. If something goes wrong with a rom flash or if you want to restore to a previous stock or custom rom, you can restore from the backups you have made. You create these nandroid backups by booting into recovery and selecting the backup option (I think maybe named backup and restore). Backups are usually found on your SD card, but you can copy them to your computer to save additional copies.
If you want to also backup apps, get a good backup program from the market. Two that I have used are Titanium Backup for Root and MyBackups for Root. They can backup and restore apps and data as well as system data.

Thanks for all of the amazing replys. I do know that I am not at the point where I wanna muck around in the system to much as this is my one and only phone. But I would like to at some point.
But something I wanna know is this: If in flash CWM, can I use it without root? Say to make a backup of the stock rom before flashing SU? I only ask because I am currently at work and can't test the idea.
Another question is this: I know how to get to the stock recovery, but from what I read you use the VOL UP to get the "Menu". When I push any (hardware) button I get nothing and the image being displayed is an Android with a triangle and there is an exclimation point in it. Any thoughts?

You don't need root to backup but remember that when you reboot it will flash back to stock recovery (the triangle). You can simply repeat the adb command to flash CWM again.

So I could flash unlock my bootloader > flash CWM > Make a backup and save it to my computer then when i reboot my phone it would automatically reflash the stock recovery? and if this is correct, then all i would need to do is flash CWM to restore the saved backup?
So here's a question, is it the action of flashing SU that keeps the phone from removing CWM and reinstalling stock recovery?

You must rename the /system/etc/install-recovery.sh file or it will keep replacing the stock recovery. See this post, item 2.

Update Rooted Nexus

I am new to this. I have a rooted nexus 5. It is stock rooted with TRWP recovery. I don't have a custom ROM. When the newest update is available, am I safe to update?

Since your post was made today, and the update was released yesterday I'm assuming you are thinking that you will be getting the update over the air? You won't. When you have a custom recovery (TWRP) you won't get OTA's.
But don't be disheartened, not in the LEAST. Unless you've removed or altered the default system apps (you would know if you did) all you have to do is download the update to your phone, boot into TWRP, flash the update, and let the phone reboot.
Due to how the OTA updates are rolled out, even if you had not loaded a custom recovery onto your phone, you might not have had it pushed to you for a couple of weeks.

1. If you flash a custom ROM via TWRP it is generally recommended you do a clean wipe beforehand (and before doing that, obviously create a backup). There are cases where you can go straight to flashing without wiping, which is called a dirty flash. Although this is used when you're flashing an updated version of the ROM you're currently running. Following instructions under Section B won't cause you to lose data.
2. You won't lose root because ROMs will generally take this into account. However, if you do happen to lose root, just download and flash SuperSU and you're back on track.
3. Just flash the zip file.

The first part of the reply above is certainly correct, (the rest is also, but I'm just speaking to the first part of it) but I feel it is just going to confuse you.
You did not flash a custom ROM, you flashed a custom RECOVERY. Two different things. When you copy the update onto your phone, in the form that exists in the thread I linked earlier, it is not an entire image. It is an UPDATE to the stock image, which you are already using. As for your concern of losing root, it shouldn't be a concern. As was mentioned in the reply above mentioned, while you are in recovery you can simply just flash SU again.
In fact, I'd be willing to bet the file to flash SU is still on your phone.
As for me personally, I happened to have unlocked the pro version of SU (because why not...it's only $2.50 and I like the app) and just toggled the "survival mode" option. But even if I had not, it would have been a very small thing to loading SU again.
In short, don't worry about losing root. When you first rooted this phone, most of the steps involved were not in rooting the phone, but in unlocking the bootloader. Loading this update has nothing to do with that, so in your case, since you didn't flash a custom ROM (Such as CyanogenMod) and you didn't make any modifications to the system apps...quite literally all you have to do is copy the stuff onto your phone, load into TWRP, fire up the update, and either fire up SU, or have survival mode already enabled, and reboot the phone.
(and no, you don't have to unzip the file pasted in the thread, just copy it directly) The instructions in that thread are really simple, and that's probably giving you a bit of pause, but seriously, it really is that simple in your case, as it was mine.

Do you still have custom recovery cwm or twrp? If so download su zip from either of those posts and flash in recovery if not you can flash recovery with adb or flashify and then flash su zip.

[Q] Htc One S (S4) performance and USB issues

I don't know if this is the correct place to write this, but if not please advise me as I'm new in this fields.
Some time ago I decided to root my Jelly bean HTC One S (S4). To do that I used the HTCDEV method and follow this post step-by-step witch I thank to all developers involved: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583427
It worked well and the only thing I done different was installing TWRP 2.6.3 recovery instead CWM.
Lately I decide to install a custom kernel (Bulletproof 1.4), essentially because I wanted to fix refresh rate/crash of HDMI output among other good things that this kernel provide. Here started my problems. I download the zip file, file copy it to phone memory through usb and then restart the phone to bootloader, enter in recovery and flash it with TWRP. After that my phone don't boot and was stuck in bootloop.
As I previous made a backup of my system through TWRP I thought it would be enough to restore it, but then my sdcard was unreachable and I found no way to access it. At this point I had also the copy of the backup I done with recovery in my laptop. With the phone in bootloader screen (witch I'm still able to reach) I can see the phone in devices although not accessible. So the only way I found to fix my phone was format the sdcard though windows copy the backup to sdcard via and then make make a restore via TWRP. It somehow worked and I was able to back to system.
I checked the kernel and it changed to bulletproof 1.4+. Nevertheless the performance of the phone decreased at the point that he almost freezes sometimes (no restarts) and also can't acess phone storage via usb in windows. When I plug it to computer it beeps as a normal device inserted and htc one s device appears but I can't see any of the contents inside it.
After some days, I decided to install Busybox app and somehow that app makes some miracle and the phone got something better in terms of performance, but never as it was before the installation of the kernell. Even know the phone has some freezes, but Can someone help me recovering the normal phone performance?

1.save you're data from phone to PC.
2.put the rom from above link in SD CARD
2.reboot bootloader
3.factory reset
4.wipe all except SD CARD.
5.flash rom from recovery
6.reboot bootloader
7.Fasboot USB will apear when you conect to PC
8."Fastboot flash boot boot.img" with command promt. (without this you're phone wont start)

I have some backups of all the system done with TWRP made immediately after rooting the phone and before flash the custom kernel. One of those backups I used to help me bring phone again to life however in the end with performance and usb problems I mention before. Can I use this? If yes should I take some specific step? (I watched the files of the TWRP backup and they are all .win and .md5, is this normal? can I use it as you mention?)
If I use some of the rom you point me (or eventually my backup) in the end flash boot.img I will be replacing the custom kernel I installed right? If so and if everything goes right I will still be rooted but with stock kernel right? I watched the roms available from the link you gave me how do I choose from them, I suppose will be some of the Europe, probably Ville_Europe_3.16.401.8_OTA_UPDATE_Stock_Rooted_ODEX, however how do I know if those match with my radio/Hboot version version which are 1.11.50.05.28 /HBoot 2.15.
I know I probably did some stupid questions, but as you may noticed I'm a lot "green" here.

Have on more question, if possible, now I'm again on stock kernel which as mhl hdmi problems (phone outputs 1080p 24hz which makes it slow and some times freezes)... so would you recommend me some custom kernel? just want to fix that. The buletproof 1.4 was ok in that point but last time I flashed it phone enters in bootloop and the rest you already know.
Can you tell the correct steeps to install a custom kernel, should I flash it through recovery, clear all cache in recovery and then flash the boot.img file of the kernel via fastboot? or should I use some market app like "kernel manager" or "flash image gui"

Hi, is there any ROM's like the ones you point me already with Heartbleed vulnerability fix from HTC? I mean a stock, odex, rooted rom's made after the update release from HTC? With those ones how can I apply the fix?

About my last post (the heartbleed issue), I don't know If it was the best solution but still on 4.1.1 and used the patch from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51830870, tested it with the heartbleed detector and look like it's ok now.
After that I flashed again the bulletproof 1.4 now with Flash Image Gui, not via recovery (my previous try I used twrp, but as I'm s-on probably boot.img wasn't flashed well or flashed at all, and probably from there started my problems). After this try phone runs good and fluid most of the time. However I noticed that when use a browser (chrome/dolphin or even the stock browser) or turn on gps and mobile data after been some time without connection he becomes very slow (not all times but somehow frequent).
After that I flash the last bulletproof 2.1 (again with Flash Image Gui), thinking it might be due to the fact that version 1.4 still have some problems.
After installation and in the beginning the system was fluid, but then again even with this version sometimes lags a lot when browsing. Do you know what may cause that?
About hdmi with this kernel, if the phone isn't passing for a period o lag I mention before it runs very fluid in 720p 60hz.

HELP!! Messed up the root after updating to Android 10.

I downloaded the Android 10 zip file from Oxygen Updater app. Went to settings app, selected local upgrade and installed the update. Since I already had root, and wanted to still have root, I went over to Magisk app, installed magisk (the way to do after installing an OTA) and I also flashed twrp and again installed magisk. After this is where everything went downhill. I rebooted the phone and I had Android 10 installed fine, but I didnt have root access. I wasnt able to use magisk, so to get back root access, I booted to twrp and there I had the problem where my internal memory was 0mb. So I followed a guide online and was able to fix it, but I lost all internal data, so I booted my phone and downloaded the magisk zip and went back to twrp, where again my internal memory was 0mb so I again followed the same steps and this time, I flashed the magisk zip using an otg pendrive. After all the android setup process, I couldnt find the magisk app anywhere. I assumed that my phone isnt rooted and since I was almost fed up at this moment, I thought, I'll manage a few days without root. After a while when I opened netflix it says that it isnt compatible with my device and on checking online, it seems that this problem occurs when the phone is rooted. I again tried to boot to the recovery to flash magisk but now the stock oneplus recovery comes. How do I get out of this situation? I want my phone either properly rooted or even if its totally unrooted its okay. I might have messed up on many things along the way, please help me fix it.

Looks messy. I don't know the workarounds to get you through. If I was in your place, I would use MSM to reset it to factory settings, update to Android 10 as needed and then use a patched boot image to install magisk. I went that route this time as I really don't need twrp. Search xda for the exact steps to do this. Fairly easy.

I had alot of problems with the MSM tool the last time I tried to use it. Is there any other way that you could recommend me to start over with a clean slate? Meanwhile, I'll try to get things ready to try MSM tool once again.

Options for the fastboot ROMs, as I see it:
- Flash Android 9 fastboot stock ROM, root, and try to update and keep root (like you did before).
- Flash Android 10 fastboot stock ROM, and try to root by flashing patched boot image.
- Flash Android 10 fastboot stock ROM, and leave it unrooted.

I had similar issues and decided to fastboot oem lock my bootloader after upgrading to Android 10. This reset everything to stock on Android 10 and avoids the issue with Netflix for now. I may re-root at some point but the downsides of being rooted are a bit more glaring now with Android 10 (losing enterprise email for my work, worse version of Netflix, etc).
My assumption is you ran into the same encryption issue I had where the only way out was reformatting and wiping data in the process. Next time I do anything with TWRP/Root/OTA updates I'll be disabling my pin and fingerprints to see if that avoids the issue. I've had it happen 2-3 times now where internal storage is showing 0 and is encrypted with no way to enter my pin.

Just do it all over again, boot to OS install through local upgrade and open magisk, flash twrp first then install magisk OTA and reboot, that way it will go to the other partition.
