Gear S2 3G connection modes - Samsung Gear S2

I have been playing with my watch for the last couple of weeks and I wanted to provide some clarification in case it might be helpful to others. I will provide also details for ATT w/number sync and hopefully others will chime in from other carriers.
Bluetooth w/phone:
This is obviously the standard connection which is ubiquitous for all smartwatches. It appears to me that it is the principle mode for the S2 3G that provides the most functionality. All the heavy lifting is done on the phone which is relayed to the watch via bluetooth. The watch is really just a handy display.
Network (3/4G) w/phone and ATT number sync:
On my watch it shows the mobile connection is over 4G and it is "Connected Remotely" to my Note 5. The Note 5 also shows the "Connected Remotely" status via the Samsung gear app. I have verified that texts and phone calls work both incoming and outgoing.
Issue: No emails notifications?! I was online with samsung chat support and they informed me that email notifications where only avaliable over bluetooth. I am going to email both Samsung and ATT to verify, but this seems like a huge oversight. IMO the three things this should be able to do is calls, texts, and emails.
Solved: I can now get notifications pushed to my watch over 3/4G. I reinstalled the Samsung Gear app. See post below.Minor Issue: Taking a call on your watch shows up as a missed call on your smartphone. Sending a text from your watch does not sync up on your smartphone. So you will only get partial conversations between your watch and phone.
Network (3/4G) Standalone:
This basically allows the watch to operate as a Standalone basic cell phone. It can receive and place calls and texts via the phone number it has which is different from your smartphone (ie Note 5 phone number != Gear S2 phone number). This does not rely on your smartphone at all as they are not connected over Bluetooth, 3G and have different numbers all together. I can confirm the functionality works as intended. Watch shows "4G StandAlone ATT" connection.
Network (3/4G) Standalone w/ATT number sync:
The phone number associated with the watch is the same number as your smartphone (ie Note 5 phone number == Gear S2 phone number) and there is no remote connection to your phone over the mobile network. This means your phone could be turned off and you should still recieve texts and calls to your primary smartphone number (ie my Note 5 phone number). I can confirm this functionality as well. Watch shows "4G StandAlone ATT" connection but there is no immediate indication of ATT number sync unless you go into settings on the watch.

Notifications now being pushed over Network from phone!
I ended up "reinstalling" the Samsung Gear app on my phone following the instructions from the Galaxy apps comments for the Samsung gear app. Note it's doesn't really unimstall completely. Then I updated the Samsung Gear from the Galaxy apps. This forced my watch to do a light reset upon connecting. Had to reestablish my ATT numbersync as well. Turned off bluetooth and connect my watch to my phone over 3/4G, made sure I had notifications enabled from the apps I wanted and viola. Now my phone pushes notifications to my watch over the network. I can now leave my phone at my desk during lunch and still get calls, texts, emails, whatsapp and hangouts notification and reply to them from my watch hooray!

Can you figure out a way to have images included on the watch when you receive an email? If I receive an email that has an image attached, the watch just says "image included" at the bottom of the email.
If so, is this affected by whether you are connected remotely or on BT?

Using the Samsung email app, I can see the email has an attachment which I can then chose to download and see using the menu interface for the email app (ie the three little dots on the right handside) and selecting the paper clip icon. This will show you the name of the attachment which you can then touch and be prompted if you want to download showing you the size of the attachment. I have verified this over BT and see no reason why it won't work over the network since the emails function in the same exact way. I can verify this later if you would like though.

Hmm not working for me. What is the name of the app you are using for email on your phone? I'm using the default "Email" app. I don't see a "samsung email" in the play store. Using your above setup, I tested it both while connected to BT and again while only sing the mobile network remote connection. Neither worked. Both of them show me the "1 attachment image included" note at the bottom of the email, but the menu (3 dots) does not give me an option to download and/or view.

I'm using the same email app, but no I don't see your options. When I click the three dots menu, I only have the Reply, Open on Phone and Delete options. I don't have the Paper Clip or the Star button. I have also tried on BT cannot get it to show that option. I am on Verizon, maybe the software is different??

From what I have read here Verizon is in the process of updating to software version AOL3 on their S2 3G.
Here is a thought try I installing Andriod Wear app on your phone. You can open the app aftweards just to make sure it installed but you dont need to try and connect bc you dont have an andriod watch so it will fail. Restart both devices after you install Andriod Wear on your phone.
I was unable to reply to hangouts before I installed Andriod Wear on my phone. Apparently it also provides other functions and maybe it will help with the email app. Let me know.

Does not help. Neither on BT or 3G do I get the option to view attachment. Oh well, I'm guessing it has to do with the software version. Verizon better get send out the update soon. I am on R730VVRU1AOJ6. I guess I have a couple weeks left to return the watch, so I'll wait and see if they send out a software update... especially if it helps battery optimization.
As far as hangouts, I was able to reply to hangouts, gmail, etc out of the box. I didn't need to tweak anything, it just worked.

Hmm. The final suggestion I have is to uninstall the Samsung gear app on your phone using the instructions above. This resolved some issues on my watch and might help yours. It will do a "light reset" on your watch after it connects (I had to reinstall apps, watch faces etc but it didn't wasn't a major hassle, 20 mins after the software reset). Whether it's worth doing before the Verizon software push is another question. Let me know if you need help with uninstalling the Samsung gear app.

I will wait for an update to do that. I actually did that already a couple days ago for other reasons, so it obviously didn't help with the attachments.
Thanks for your suggestions.

No problem. Make sure you check those intstructions out from the Galaxy app if you do decided to uninstall the Samsung Gear app, as it wasn't straightforward and you had to uninstall some side apps in the process and then reinstall from the Galaxy app store.
Anyhow you know the watch is capable of doing it so its just a matter of updates/configuration. Best of luck.

"Remotely Connected" 3G to WiFi
Interestingly enough, my S2 Gear 3G stayed "Remotely Connected" to my phone when my watch was connected over 4G and my phone was in airplane mode and only on WiFi. I was able to receive and reply to hangout messages and my watch showed it was remotely connected to my phone! Will update it on the first post later.

Have you ever had the issue when your connected to bluetooth and when someone call you it goes directly to " the person you are trying to reach is not accepting calls at this time" but when you do standalone mode calls come through? Cause thats what happening to me and its annoying.

Sprint + Google Voice Testing

I know there are multiple threads that mentioned Sprint + Google Voice integration, but this thread is for people who are actually testing it. I got an email today from Google telling me I'm now able to use it. Feel free to discuss what you like or what you don't like about it, or any issues you're having. Here are some screenies from activation:

You can always undo it all disconnect your voice number and your Sprint number, and you can re-do it as well. I've done this myself.
------------------------------------------------------
So far the issues I've found are these:
- If you install the GV app, you get notified of texts through both your native Messaging app (or whatever you use, if you enable it) AND GV. If I only want to use GV for Voicemail, I can't do that.
- There is no option to choose what to be notified for; I can choose to get Voicemail notifications by text, but then I lose Visual Voicemail, so what's the point?
- MMS works, but is delayed and the person I sent it to got it 5 times.
i have a sprint evo. my phone only recieves text to my google voice app. the text dont come to my native app anymore. i just activated it, so i should wait a little longer and see how things turn out. i dont really have a problem with replacing handcent with my GV app. i just wish the GV app was more customizable, like chat bubbles etc. im gonna miss my handcent features. :-(

That doesn't seem right. Let me know if that changes, I was thinking about pulling the trigger today but also don't want to lose native messaging ability.
[Edit: I've seen elsewhere people have said similar things...]
Second edit: I went for it and set it up as it looks like you can always back out within 90 days to keep your existing GV number. I do not have Google Voice app installed on my Evo, therefore all my messages come thru completely as normal. I can also text from the GV website which is awesome, but note whatever I send from that site does not sync to my phone. Of course all replies and messages to me hit both GV site and my phone.
If anyone has any questions about it's implementation, let me know. When I researched this I found a LOT of confusing and misleading information.

I'm not sure if this setting is the same on your phone, but this is what I did:
Go to http://voice.google.com
Click Edit for your cell phone
Check "Receive Text Messages On This Phone".
The only problem now is that you'll get them both through the Voice app and through your Messaging app =/ I sent them a few comments using that form they linked to asking to be able to choose what to be notified for.
I read on the SprintUsers forum that MMS doesn't work. That would be really bad, but I can't confirm since I don't have this yet. But the fact that you have the same area code as mine gives me hope that I will get to upgrade my GV account soon.
MMS worked for me. Apparently MMS still goes through Sprint instead of Google. The only issue was the MMS went through like 45 minutes late and the person I sent it to got it 5 times.

My solution was just to not have the Google Voice app installed. I really don't need it anymore anyway

There's also that. That would solve the double-notifications issue, and you can still be notified of Voicemail either by text or email, but then I lose Visual Voicemail on my phone. Not a big deal, as I almost always have a computer near me(college student).
EDIT: Just realized there's also the mobile Google Voice site you can go to through your phone and download your Voicemail if you really need to skim through it.
Looks like you elected to use your Sprint number as your GV number.
Any idea what would happen if I set up a SkypeIn number say (917-310-1010) and made GV ring it when my Sprint number was called?
In other words do you see the option to disable incoming calls from ringing your Sprint phone directly (e.g. 347 xxx xxxx)?
If not, I guess I'd have to keep both my existing GV and Sprint numbers to be able to forward calls to my GV number to the SkypeIn number.

For me it seems to be ok as long as I'm not logged in to the Google Voice app on the phone. You can keep in installed, just don't log in and you'll still get texts delivered to the SMS app not the Google Voice App.
This way you can log in to get voicemails in the Google Voice App when needed and then just log back out when done.
Anybody that uses an Airave testing this? I have been testing for a while now and the only issue I have is that I cannot receive calls through my Airave at home.
I've heard that a lot and it seems to be a common issue. I think it's because calls are supposed to be routed through Google, but with the Airave, you're still connecting to Sprint servers. What you can do is go into your Sprint account and find the "Manage My Airave" link. Then specify all the phones that are allowed to connect to your Airave (by number) and leave yours out, so your phone won't connect and will get calls through Google.

Gear S3 Frontier, iPhone & Numbersync via AT&T

OK, so I know the iPhone is not fully supported as of yet with the Gear S3. I do however have the Gear S3 app that was leaked online for the iPhone and it is working okay for the time being. my trouble is getting numbersync working via sms. After many hours of troubleshooting and resets I was able to get numbersync working with AT&T on my Gear S3. To do so I had to disable iMessage on my iPhone, wait about 20 mins for servers to catch up. Reset my Gear S3 and set it up in stand alone mode and enable number sync. I was then able to make calls and text from the same number as my iPhone. the problem was I had no contacts for it was not sync'd with my phone. Next step is to perform a soft reset by selecting "connect to a phone". After the soft reset I paired the Gear S3 with my iPhone using the Gear S3 app. The problem is after doing so, this break the sms (text messaging) portion of nymbersync. I can still make calls with the same number as my iPhone and receive them but the SMS defaults back to the independent number associated with the watch. I can still get notifications of texts being sent to my phone but can not even reply via Bluetooth. Also after pairing my phone I logged into my AT&T account tried turning off numbersync and re-enabling it with no luck. So it appears syncing my iPhone with the watch somehow disables numbersync via SMS. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this and any workaround ideas I have not thought of yet? your input is appreciated.
I don't have an answer for you but will be following this thread as I'm interested in getting the S3 LTE for use with my iPhone if you get everything resolved. One question... are you able to access the Gear/Galaxy App Store via your watch or the iPhone? Thanks and good luck!

Yes, I was able to assess the Gear App store via the iPhone, you have to install the Gear S3 beta app first. It would not let me post the link for you since I am a new member but a quick google search and you should be able to find it pretty easy.
Great thread and thanks for posting. I spent countless hours on the phone with att tech support trying to get numbersync to work. I'm really happy to see your post. I just turned iMessage off in an effort to see if I can get numbersync working.
My interactions with att went as far as them telling me that it will not work due to cross platform limitations. I'll keep you posted but this really interests me
Excellent Post! Been waiting to hear progress in this very frustrating dilemma. Please keep us posted on, if any, updates.....strong work and much appreciated!

I basically followed the steps listed in the thread. I ran into an brick wall once I got to the point of entering the code from the watch on the site to activate sync. The problem is the site asks for a 5-digit code while the code provided by the S3 is a 6-digit code. This stopped me dead as am unable to match the code. Thoughts?
NO Numbersync with S3 Frontier and Iphone
I confimed with ATT advnaced tech support today. No numbersync between Gear s3 Frontier and iphone. Fail.

I have Numbersync set up with AT&T on the S3. Followed these steps:
- Close Gear S app
- Delete Bluetooth profiles for the Gear S3
- Turn Bluetooth off on iPhone
- Do a hard reset on S3
- When watch restarts and tells you to download Gear S app scroll up until to see option to set up as 'standalone'
- go to settings/communications/AT&T Numbersync
- at some point it will ask you to enter 4 digit code - pick an easy to remember one.
- Numbersync will give to a five digit code
- sign into your AT&T account on myAT&T app or desktop att.com
- choose your iPhone from your account devices
- goto settings and features, Choose Numbersync and follow prompts
-once setup you can pair the watch to Gear S app. Turn Bluetooth back on to do so.
- Swipe down on watch and you will see Numbersync on/off icon, it will not show in the settings/communications tab of the watch.
I'm able to make and receive calls when watch is not in Bluetooth range - watch uses synced phone number. Text messages can be received or sent BUT will use watches phone number. A text sent to you iPhone number will not be received.
Gosh, that was long winded, hope I didn't forget anything. Hopefully a gear a update will work better with. Numbersync AND - my pet peeve right now: GIVE US THE ABILITY TO DOWNLOAD A PAID APP

This did not work for me. After setting up number sync I was not able to reconnect with the iPhone Gear S app. Bluetooth settings only show 1 instance of Gear S3, not 2 like before. So now I have number sync but I can't connect with the watch. I rebooted the watch to no avail.

And I seem to have gotten it working...
I had to swipe down from the top and touch the number sync icon and turn that off.
Then I went into settings -> connect with phone and the watch rebooted
Then I had to go into the iPhone app and select connect with new gear
The watch and iPhone connected, and I was able to swipe down on the watch face and turn number sync back on.

Still no joy. There were some differences with my attempt:
1. I get no option to setup standalone from swiping up. Getting past the first screen on the watch is hit or miss.
2. settings/CONNECTIONS/AT&T Numbersync
3. When I choose Numbersysc, the watch insists on connecting via Bluetooth and and will not go on
4. ATT site asks for a 5 digit code but you say to enter 4
Not sure what I'm missing here. Watch is running SW Version R765AUCU1APJ8 but my prompts and results are not the same as yours

1) I also have the SW version you reference
2) Your watch can not be connected via bluetooth nor have the Gear S app running on the iPhone.
3) You have to setup as a standalone - make sure you have done a hard reset first and keep trying at the opening screen of the watch by scrolling down until you find that option.
4) I'm not sure what the four digit code is for but I created one and was asked for it later when I reconnected the watch to the Gear S app on the iPhone. When you get through the numbersync setup on the watch you will be giving a 5 digit code that has to be entered on the AT&T site.

1. That's a relief.
2. Was not connected, Bluetooth was off on the phone
3. Did hard reset but there is nothing to scroll down to; nothing above the one that prompts to install the Gear app. I did finally get off the initial screen and into standalone mode
4. The instructions say to enter 4 digit code on the watch but never got prompted for one. When I select "Setup ATT Numbersync" the watch wants to connect to phone via Bluetooth and won't allow past screen even though it off on the phone
Let me see if I can shed some light on the directions as the OP left a little room for interpretation.
- Close Gear S app on the iPhone
- On the iPhone, delete Bluetooth profiles for the Gear S3
- On the iPhone, turn Bluetooth off (not sure why this would matter but I did it anyway)
- Do a hard reset on S3
- When watch restarts and tells you to download Gear S app scroll down until to see a question mark, click the question mark and it should let you set the watch up in stand alone mode
- Once the watch finishes booting up, go to settings/communications/AT&T Numbersync
- at some point it will ask you to enter 4 digit code - (this is a lock code for the watch, has nothing to do with number sync) pick an easy to remember one.
- Numbersync will give to a five digit code
- sign into your AT&T account on myAT&T app or desktop att.com (I think an actual link was displayed on the watch , something like https://att.com/myns)
- choose your iPhone from your account devices (I didn't have to chose my iPhone)
- goto settings and features, Choose Numbersync and follow prompts (I just followed the prompts at https://att.com/myns)
-once setup you can pair the watch to Gear S app. Turn Bluetooth back on to do so. (When I turned bluetooth back on both in the watch and the iPhone I was only able to see 1 device to connect with, not 2)
- Swipe down on watch and you will see Numbersync on/off icon, it will not show in the settings/communications tab of the watch. (I touched the number sync icon and turned it off, not deactivate)
-Once I did this, I went into the settings menu on the watch and I saw an option to connect to a phone, The watch rebooted and on the iPhone I had to go into the app and select connect to a new gear. I was able to pair them both and the number sync icon was still in the swipe down menu on the watch. I re-enabled number sync and now I get notifications from the watch, and when I am away from my phone I get calls and texts on the watch. Also I seem to be getting texts on the watch and iMessages on the phone.
Thanks Ryan141! I was going by memory which, is not always a good thing for me to do

It's not that easy for me anymore either!!
Glad I could add to the discussion.
Got it! The question mark was the key and what I was missing. Thanks all?
Update...
So after using the watch in this fashion for a few days I find that when I get a phone call my gear S3 will vibrate uncontrollably even though I may have answered the call on my iPhone or rejected the call on the watch. I have had to reboot the watch twice now to make it stop, and a few times it stopped after the phone call was completed.

That's happened to me too, on several occasions. I haven't been able to ascertain what precipitates it. But it's not related to NumberSync or an iPhone because I don't use them.
Hello all and thank you for the great posts, i was able to make my Gear 3 work with my iPhone 7 but when the watch is away from the phone i do not receive texts. Any thoughts?

All calls get sent to the Gear S3

Ugh, so I did some research and seems many people have the same issue. I don't have a samsung phone (Nexus 5x), and when I pick up a call on my phone, the call gets directed to the watch. Is the only solution really to disable "phone audio" in the BT settings and never be able to pick up the call on my watch? This seems like a pretty big bug that from what I read has been around since Gear S2 days.
Am I missing something here? Is there a different workaround I'm not aware o? I know not every single person has this issue but seems like many none samsung phone users suffer from this.
Too bad that there aren't any Android War phones out there that come close to the Gear S3.
I'm assuming you aren't forwarding calls to the gear?

Well i am on lg v20 and it works absolutely fine. I can take the call either from mu gears3 or my phone.

Not that I'm aware of. Didn't go out of my way to set anything up like that. Isn't that on LTE models only?

Yes, funny you mentioned lg v20, one of the posts I read was a person saying it works fine on his v20, so not every non samsung phone acts like this.
Just click on the circle on the left on your phone during the call screen before answering.

I only get that option after I answer the call. Is there a way to default to phone so whenever I answer a call I don;t have to take the extra step on redirecting to phone?

That's pretty much the way it works on my Moto G4. When my phone rings I get a notification on my watch and I have the option to answer either on the watch or the phone. LOL, if I'm in a public place, I seldom answer on the watch, people tend to stare at you when you do the **** Tracy wrist phone thing. This is on the Bluetooth model.
Hello. I have a Huawei Mate 9 with the S3 BT only model. This is exactly the only issue I have.
ISometimes, when I make a call using the phone, the call is automatically routed to the watch, without I asked for that, and it seems there is not any configuration or parameter to force all calls to not be routed to the watch. Of course it is easy to bring the call back to the phone (using the BT button in the dial), but as I initiated the call from the phone, it should not be redirected to the watch at the beginning. And this is something that happens eventually, not allways. It seems to be some kind of bug. I read about the same issue in other threads (S3 with other non-Samsung phones) here in XDA but could not find a definitive solution yet (of course I do not think disabling phone call in BT settings is a good workaround). If somebody can help on this, I would appreciate.

I have the same issue, this is horrible because you are talking using the phone and you stop to hear because switched the call to the GearS3.
;(
Yeah, I disabled Phone Audio inside the Gear S3 listing in the Bluetooth settings for my phone. I still get a popup on my watch that allows me to decline calls, but my audio goes through the phone or any other device connected to BT with phone enabled, like my car handsfree setup. Before I did that, the Gear wanted to take over the phone functionality I currently enjoy from my car setup. Can't have that, and I can't think of a good use case for speaking into my watch anyway.

Can you explain better. When you disconnect the phone from your watch it doesn't notify anymore
I get notifications if I'm not connected. But I have the lte version.

Actually, you still get the ability to reject calls and the caller ID comes through on the watch, even if the phone connection is disabled in your handset's bluetooth settings for the Gear.

Didn't work for me, if I disconnect call in bluetooth on phone, it no longer connects to the watch other then remote connection, and it doesn't notify me of calls, only missed calls

Are we talking about the call connection in bluetooth settings for phone right?
On my LG G6 I had to turn off phone audio in settings
Go to settings, Bluetooth, click the gear icon next to where it says Gear S3 and then toggle Call Audio off
I still get notifications on my watch of calls and can choose to dismiss the call, but I do not get the option to answer the call (which is fine because if I want to answer, I'll have to get the phone anyway)

i cant do this as i have tried it. I can only disable the bluetooth and thats all. very frustrating when watch answers weather i want to or not. it does if i dial or if i get a call
I think it's less the watching more of a standard Bluetooth behavior. When you have a Bluetooth headset connected I would imagine it would do the same thing. In order to talk on the phone you'd have to turn off a Bluetooth or select handset instead of Bluetooth on the phone.
I know my Moto Z-Force works that way .
Has anyone found a fix for this? The only option under bluetooth for Gear S3 is Calls.
If you disable or turn this off the watch disconnects from the phone thus you get no notifications.

Question about Gear Wear: Currently using Gear S3 as Standalone device for teen son.

Current Setup: I bought a S3 Frontier LTE for my 13 year old son as a standalone device and it works perfect! I am only paying about $13 for his independent number on a sub-account with Verizon.
Question: I gave him my old S5 with no service to pair and install Gear Wear to add apps, watch faces, etc. When paired, his watch does not receive texts or emails so he can't leave it paired with the phone. Is there a way "around" that so he can keep them paired? He would like to receive Instagram notifications, etc. on his watch which he can't get when it isn't paired.
Thanks!
Phone has no service, so it wouldn't receive SMS and wouldn't send a notification to the watch. If he's set the phone up for emails it should send notifications to the watch when in a wifi zone.
Notifications need to be set up on the phone app.
I would think if you set the watch for mobile network to be always on it should be able to be connected to both a phone using bluetooth and its standalone number via mobile network. I think that will make it behave as you want it too.
However big drawback is going to be terrible battery life if you do that.
I would suggest trying to download the verizon messenger app on the phone and seeing if you can get the messages from the gear to sync to that, if I remember correctly it just requires a verification text which you should be able to from the watch. If that works you can enable notifications for that app on the watch, but he won't be able to send messages from it he'd have to use the phone or unpair/turn off bluetooth to do it from the watch (he would get the notification on the watch and maybe be able to read the message in the notification I'm not sure how it would behave). As the previous poster said set up the email on the phone and it will sync to the watch over bluetooth. All that will only work (assuming it does) when that phone is connected to wifi and paired with the watch.
I hope it helps let me know.

How to get RCS on sm-n986u with at&t and google messaging app?

I came from a pixel 3xl to the att locked galaxy note 20 ultra. I bought it outright so i think i can request at&t to unlock it if that will make any difference? I had put in an insurance claim on the 3xl which required me buying a new phone from at&t directly...
I assumed that the google messages app was all i needed to have RCS working even though at&t doesn't really support it? But when I open google messages it says "chat features unavailable for this device" I tried to open up activity launcher but there is no "set rcs flag". I do have carrier services installed.
Anything else I can do to get rcs?

Once I downloaded Google messages, I set it as my main messaging app then connected to wifi and waited about 5 minutes and the app gave me a pop up saying chat features are now active. I'm using a N20U on att as well. If it doesn't, I would clear cache and app data then delete and re install
or maybe att firmware is blocking it. try to flash the U1 unlocked firmware. my gf has the unlocked galaxy flip Z (i paid for it, why does she care) on att, RCS on Google messages does work. but if you have poor signals, it takes awhile to connect RCS.
You have to go to the play store and download carrier service. I had the same issue and once I installed that it worked perfectly, but it took a few hours after I installed carrier services to work. I have an unlocked note 20 ultra btw.

If you're running a vpn, that can block the activation process.

AT&T aren't blocking it as they support RCS services on any client that can use it.
I have Google Messages beta client version 6.8.072 installed and chat features work as they should.
Set Samsung's messaging app as default and then go into settings and open Advanced Messaging.
Make sure the toggle is enabled. I believe this is what triggers enabling it on your account.
Then open Google Messages app, set as default. Go into Settings and Chat features should give you the option to enable chat features.
Then wait for it to show a status as "Connected".
Well on my phone I followed a write up from this forum the other day and was able to get rcs messaging on the Samsung messages app. I'm not sure if it will work for att but its worth a shot. Here's the link.

ATT supports RCS through samsung messanger in a very limited way with "advanced messaging", it's not true RCS as it's only supported with the other person also being on ATT and also having a samsung phone.
I THINK I FOUND AN ISSUE:
I took my new att sim card and put it in my pixel, and i got the same message that rcs isn't supported by this carrier...
I took my old non 5g sim card which is no longer provisioned, and put it back in my old phone and it gives me the option to enable chat features. I put the old non provisioned sim card in my note 20 and it also gives me the option to enable chat features...
I wonder if ATT's new sim card is somehow blocking RCS from working?
I'm probably going to break something, but i opened up the chat features settings on my N20U with the old sim installed, then i swapped sims... I waited for phone to get on the network then enabled chat features and it's sitting at setting up. Hopefully in an hour or two i'll get it provisioned.
EDIT: Nevermind, now that i closed messages and opened it back it now says the feature is not supported by the carrier.
test to make sure you able to receive text message.
Google send a text to your phone to verify the phone number.

the phone is back to saying the feature is no longer supported by carrier... something with this new sim seems to be blocking it.

not yet... use my phone for work won't have time u ntil this weekend... but given the new sim card gave me the same message in my unlocked pixel3xl, which rcs worked on with the old sim card, i can reasonably assume i will most likely have the same problem even if i do flash.

I've been using Stock Samsung Messages as my messaging app since I got my Note 20 Ultra (Utah, USA - AT&T). Before my Note 20, I had a Note 9 ; I would flip-flop between Google Messages and Stock Samsung Messages...
I've not used Google Messages since I got my N20U.
I came across this post this morning; it gave me "the itch"... I just switched my default messaging app to Google Messages - the "Chat Services" were unavailable to me.
I force stopped Google Messages and restarted my N20U. I have been able to enable the feature. I just verified my number and I'm waiting to be fully-RCS'd.
TRY Foce Stopping your app before you restart. Worked for me.
UPDATE - I'm verified and 'connected'.
