(How to) Hindi, Devnagari and Indic Fonts Froyo / Gingerbread

Hi, I had always found it difficult to have Indian fonts rendered on WM 6.1/6.5 and now, on Android phones. After searching high and low for almost three years, i've compiled a set of fonts for implementing into Android devices (Gingerbread and below only) so as to be able to render HIndi/Indic fonts.
I suppose, the same fonts can work on Windows Mobile 6/6.5 (tested & found working), WP 7/7.5, Meego or even WebOS 3.5, provided, you have admin/root privileges to add these font files to the system directory of your phone.
I have seen that Indic Fonts are natively availale on ICS ROMs and this procedure may not be necessary for ICS devices, unless you wish to render some regional font not being displayed in ICS.
Note:
Works on Rooted Android devices only.
Procedure:
1. Download the fonts from the link given below. Store the zip file on device / Computer.
Link: http://www.mediafire.com/?q1c8u3hxfuxu9cn
Dropbox Link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ked0l2xv2wotqdu/fonts.zip
2. Make a NANDroid back up to revert back in case you made any errors. Install Fontchanger from Android Market / Google Playstore onto your device. Forum XDA support thread for Fontchanger is given in credits below. You may also use any other font replacing app of your choice (freefontfrenzy etc)
3. Unzip font files on PC/Device and copy the font files (*.ttf) to micro Sd Card in a new folder ".Fontchanger".
4. Run Fontchanger. Allow root access in SU. Select Advanced Tab. Accept the warning to dismiss it, in case running fontchanger for the first time.
5. Scroll down to entry DroidSansFallback.ttf. Select the entry. You will now be asked for the font to replace the stock DroidSansFallback.ttf with. Scroll to select Akshar.ttf or DroidIndia.ttf or Arial Unicode MS.ttf.
6. Apply changes. Reboot phone. Now your phone can display almost all Indic and Devnagari Fonts.
You may also use the Basic/Simple method to directly select Akshar.ttf/DroidIndia.ttf or Arial Unicode MS.ttf to replace the default font on your device (in the Basic Tab of the Fontchanger App). In this case your default font will change to Aria Unicode / Arial narrow (DroidIndia.ttf) and may affect the current display.
In case you are trying to replace the DroidSansFallback.ttf with akshar.ttf or DroidIndia.ttf, please note that you will lose Oriental (Japanese. Korean & Chinese) fonts after reboot. In case you wish to retain Oriental fonts, then use Arial Unicode MS.ttf (not tested). In case you wish to directly push these fonts into the /system/fonts directory, please be sure to chmod and change permissions for the fonts you are copying.
Fonts available:
Akshar.ttf
Devnagari fonts (Hindi, Marathi and Nepali).
Tamil fonts
Telugu fonts
Malayalam fonts
Kannada fonts
DroidIndia.ttf
Same as akshar.ttf above plus:
Bengali Fonts
Oriya Fonts
Gujarati fonts
Punjabi fonts
Assamese fonts
Arial Unicode MS.ttf
Same as DroidIndia.ttf above plus:
Chinese fonts
Japanese fonts
Thanks To
martino2k6 for his wonderful app Fontchanger. Support thread for the app is at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874658

Yes, any rooted android version below 4.0 (ics). Runs fine on my phone with cyanogenmod 7.2 RC.

if i do it manually. do i hv to change the name akshar.ttf to DroidSansFallback.ttf or jus move it to /system/fonts?
i am already using a droidsansfallback.ttf which supports regional languages like tamil,hindi. but the font rendering is not perfect. not sure if this the same one or different
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
Rename to droidsansfallback.ttf. Check file sizes in phone explorer. Alternatively, copy droidsansfallback.ttf from /system/fonts to your micro SD card using any root explorer and then connect to PC as drive. Open file in win or Linux PC and compare with my file.

A simpler way. Download fantoosh apk from market. It works well.

In which market is this fantastic 'fantoosh' apk? It's definitely not in the Google playstore. And if it is from some unknown source, it may well contain some malware code...
Beware! Follow the forum rules. Do not post or promote malware or unknown apps. And don't post spam either. Afaik, there are no other methods to enable Indian scripts.

changing regulatory information

I am curious if anyone knows how to change what is displayed when going to settings > about phone > regulatory information. How do I change that?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
usually you can by open and editing build.prop in /system, check for the line you want to change and edit, or use an applike romtoolbox wich has an integrated build.prop editor
but your question does not belong to the android devolpment but to the Q&A, sorry but I've to report

[Fix] NA1/NA5_Work around to enable installation of non-market apps and disable googl

Hello Users/Readers:
I'm just your average Falsh-o-holic, who combs through all of the S4 threads to find what's been accomplished/useful information. I have not come across this work around, so I decided to post this info users of the NA1/NA5 Roms who cannot access the Security, settings option.
Disclaimer:
Use this info at your own risk. I am not responsible if this breaks your device.
I am posting this info using my XDA app. I also did this without the need of a PC. Please do not ask for links. Everything I used can be found on this web site, play store or google, except for the kernel. I'll try to be specific. Feel free to add links if you want to help other Users.
My Phone/ROM info:
Confimed working on an US AT&T SGH-I337 S4. I believe this will work on all S4 models. I currently am running Echo Rom v14 (NA5), with old bootloader and wifi working kernel (had to flash the loki doki.zip as well, which can be found all over the AT&T S4 thread).
Links of this kernel have sadly been removed.
I also use the AT&T MK2 modem - I intitially got 4G speed/icon.
I had to preform a few adjustments to the build prop and created a new PTA apn to achieve a stronger LTE connection.
I flahed the Att CSC fix zip (Can be found on the Virgin Rom thread in the OP.) as well.
Tools needed for this permission edit:
SQLite Editor or similar app.
I used SQLite Editor v2.0.1
Solution:
1) Using SQLite editor (in the apps menu) I scrolled down to the Settings Storage app and selected it/pressed it.
2) On the next screen I selected/pressed on the settings.db option.
3) Find the line that reads - install_non_market apps (line 19 for me) and press on it/select it. Then select the edit option (pencil icon top of the screen).
4) Change the value from 0 to 1 and save.
5) In the same menu, navigate to the line that reads - package_verifier_enable (line 86 for me) and change the value from 1 to 0 and save.
Last - Reboot your device and enjoy installing apks from your external/internal storage cards, xposed app, etc., without access to the Security settings option.
Please do not make any other changes because you can possibly harm your device.
These 2 simple edits will stop the current FC's we experience when trying to install and app without using the play store and disable the annoying pop-up thak asks if you want google to check for harmful blah, blah, blah. Will work even if you've pressed OK already, which I did my mistake.
Again feel free to post links to assist other Users. I Hope this helps everyone with old (4.3) bootloaders who cannot access these setting.

I would love to but do not have the proper hardware to do so. I have laptop running with an AMD64 processor, but it came installed with Vista,32 bit. I also have a desktop with Windows 8,32 bit. From what I've read a PC running a 64 bit OS is necessary. Let me know if there is some I can do with my equipment. I've never tried to build because of this but would do so if I could.

You wouldnt even have to build it my friend
You grab the build one (i.e. v14) and you make it so that Americans (which i have soooo many friends i want them to be happy) can use it
Thats all
No need to cook it from scratch! You will be grabbing the latest Echoe everytime
No pressure my friend at all!!
I thought it would be awesome way especially for Americans to be on the 4.4.2
And there is no way i could do it and fully support another thread....
No hurry!! We can talk any details you want my man!!
I was impressed about your discovery here!! I love to see this kind of thinking!! Thats what got me to discover the"wifi trick" for the 4.3... Thinking completely paradoxically and "outside of the box"

Great find. I had already changed build prop to att and did a dirty flash to get most of my app installed but this will allow those that didn't to work. It makes the Echoe a truly workable Rom for ATT users and a DD candidate. I agree with Friedrich420 this is what the forums are about,
Edit: Tried this and still have a problem with downloading some apps. Get a pop up "can't store internal storage or sd card"
Hmm. Just tried "sqlite editor pro free" and when I got to settings.db to open it, it gives me "an error occurred while opening the database". Rebooted to make sure everything was settled, but still no luck. Went to buy the $2.99 version of sqlite editor, but it couldn't install onto either my sd card or internal memory. Might be the rom, but this leads to the whole point of needing the work around. Maybe a lost cause.

I bet you are trying to use Root Explorer to edit the file. Unfortunately the file size is too big and Root Explorer A) won't even show the entire file's contents and B) won't let you save the file even if the right commands were editable......
You have to find another alternative. Personally I pushed the file out of the phone, edited it on my computer, and pushed it back to the phone. It worked fine.

As much as I like (and also recommend) Root Explorer, it won't work with the build.prop file as it is too big for the Root Explorer text editor.

I use root explorer as well. I didn't realize that the text editor cant handle that large of a file... Anyway this is the way that I got around it on my Mac:
On Mac:
adb pull /system/build.prop .
vi build.prop
<Make changes>
adb push ./build.prop /mnt/sdcard/
On phone:
Remount /system RW in Root explorer
Rename /system/build.prop to /system/build.prop.bak
Move /sdcard/build.prop to /system/build.prop
Reboot
You could always just download build prop editor from the play store and it works and is easy.
Sent from my LG-D850 using Tapatalk
Edited the build.prop file. Ended up soft bricking my phone. Was able to reset but not fun.
This is an app that doesn't require mucking with build prop. Works well for me.

How to stop the Note5 from killing background apps and enjoy better multitasking

Found this on phonearena.com and figured I'd share this. I take no credit for this and am merely posting for those who may have missed this. I haven't tried this yet, but many are saying it works. The link to original article and instructions are below:
http://www.phonearena.com/news/How-...d-apps-and-enjoy-better-multitasking_id73276
1. Install the build.prop editor app from Google Play ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.apps.build.prop.editor&hl=en ).
2. Go to the #DHA Properties part and change the following entries' values like this:
ro.config.dha_cached_max=12
ro.config.dha_empty_max=36
3. Add the following lines below these entries:
ro.config.dha_th_rate=2.3
ro.config.dha_lmk_scale=0.545
ro.config.sdha_apps_bg_max=70
ro.config.sdha_apps_bg_min=8
4. Finally, delete the following four lines from the build.prop file:
ro.config.dha_cached_max=
ro.config.dha_empty_max=
ro.config.dha_th_rate=
ro.config.dha_lmk_scale=
5. Save the changes and reboot your Note5. Now, the phablet shouldn't be closing tasks so aggressively.

doubt i'll use this, but it's good to know that it's there if i ever need it. thanks!
I have a question about the instructions:
3. Add the following lines below these entries:
ro.config.dha_th_rate=2.3
ro.config.dha_lmk_scale=0.545
ro.config.sdha_apps_bg_max=70
ro.config.sdha_apps_bg_min=8
4. Finally, delete the following four lines from the build.prop file:
ro.config.dha_cached_max=
ro.config.dha_empty_max=
ro.config.dha_th_rate=
ro.config.dha_lmk_scale=
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
Why does it say to add two lines and then to remove them?

he has you edit 2, then add 2 and delete those same 4.

Found this on phonearena.com and figured I'd share this. I take no credit for this and am merely posting for those who may have missed this. I haven't tried this yet, but many are saying it works. The link to original article and instructions are below:

1. Install the build.prop editor app from Google Play ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.apps.build.prop.editor&hl=en ).
2. Go to the #DHA Properties part and change the following entries' values like this:
ro.config.dha_cached_max=12
ro.config.dha_empty_max=36
3. Add the following lines below these entries:
ro.config.dha_th_rate=2.3
ro.config.dha_lmk_scale=0.545
ro.config.sdha_apps_bg_max=70
ro.config.sdha_apps_bg_min=8
4. Finally, delete the following four lines from the build.prop file:
ro.config.dha_cached_max=
ro.config.dha_empty_max=
ro.config.dha_th_rate=
ro.config.dha_lmk_scale=
5. Save the changes and reboot your Note5. Now, the phablet shouldn't be closing tasks so aggressively.
