I've recieved my second MotoG 3rd gen today. Both stock, untouched. When booting to fastboot mode I've noticed that it shows 'Device is ENGINEERING' and 'Software status: Modified'
We've got a similar device for my wife so I can compare the two. This one shows 'Device is LOCKED. status code 0' and ' Software status: Official.'
The device with status Engineering does not respond to adb or fastboot commands and is not recognised in windows device manager or the Motorola device manager.
Made a call to customer support where I bought the device and I expect they will just swap it.
Still, out of curiosity, tried to google the problem but not much shows up, except a few Motorola Nexus devices that show a similar status. Does anyone know the exact meaning of 'Device is ENGINEERING'?
That's the same thing as Service Mode. Every phone has it and you normally enter into it by a series of numbers on the dial pad. There are also apps that do it. I wouldn't have a clue why yours is showing that in the bootloader unless some Moto tech left it there after testing. I would think there's a fastboot entry to stop it. I also wonder if you could go in and out of service mode after booting.
Enable USB Debugging
Open your dialer
Enter *#*#2486#*#*
There's a factory setting on the bottom checked as default.
Do I need to uncheck that radio button? There is not much I can do in that service menu. Tried to change between factory and alt but that did not change the status back to normal.

I don't know about that. I'd wait and see if Motorola gets back to you. You could try posing a question in the Motorola Owners Forum at https://forums.motorola.com/hives/08e565d7be/summary Log in with your Google ID if you haven't been there before.
i also have a phone that says engineering in fastboot mode and was wondering what it meant. its a xt1550 asia model.
my phone has a lot of extra apps however bug2go battery tracer desense tester cdbench iplog tool just to name a few. should i leave the phone as is or is it possible to flash a US retail.? any comments are welcome

So I purchased a Boost Mobile Moto G 1st Generation device today and want to use it as a spare wifi android device at home only.
The model I have is the XT1031 Boost Mobile CDMA. I went through a whole bunch of threads here and got my device updated to Stock 4.4.4 Kitkat [Falcon], bootloader unlocked, rooted with Super User, and the latest TWRP [the one for XT1032 worked perfectly fine!) I also found the very long paragraph bootloader unlocked nag screen on startup logo removal zip and that was sweet! Thanks to everyone here (so many of you from all of these topics and work beyond imaginable!) I also went ahead and installed Xposed Framework, Gravitybox, F-Droid + AdAway... will need to fiddle around with XPrivacy a bit more or come back to a really old LBE Master Privacy Guard project that seems to be translated now and working for a lot of devices. Now just waiting for the stable Lollipop image to come out and enjoy the next generation of our OS!
So with that all said (loving the device), on each boot right before "Starting Services", the Activation Screen comes up. It starts to first check for Profile, PRL Updates but fails and gives the error : Airplane Mode.
Anyone know a workaround to get that Activation screen disabled from appearing again (if you're not ever planning to use voice/data but only wifi)? I thought after I put the device on Wifi-Airplane Mode, it would go away, but it always comes up. My only workaround (which really isn't a workaround ) on each time I power back up/reboot the Moto G, that it comes up with that message, I just click "Next" and it will go to the Android Home screen just fine. and connect straight to my wifi network while already in airplane mode and work fine like that .
Anyways, it's a very minor thing, but maybe you all could direct me to a link or reply on what to check out if that's something easy to modify? Please let me know if you need any other information from my device or setup thus far to help you with my question!
edit: Hmm, now the activation notice doesn't appear on reboot but a notification at the top (white triangle) with SIM Card Error comes up. The device will hang with starting services in the center. If I press the power button once and press it again, I can swipe away the notification of the SIM Card Error and it will go to Home and everything works. If I click on the Sim Card Error, it gives me a message saying to either power off or continue, stating the device cannot work without a SIM Card.... (this is all while in WiFi-Airplane Mode). I thought it was an error or issue of Xposed/Gravity Box but uninstalling/reinstalling those didn't make a difference and the SIM Card Error still shows up on reboot. Strange thing, I thought the XT1031 Boost CDMA doesn't have a SIM Card Slot. Anyways, if I disable wifi and disable airplane mode and reboot, the original activation screen comes up again... and I can skip it and then go back to Wifi-Airplane mode... Okay, hopefully that gives some insight and maybe someone will know what I am talking about!
So I picked up a Virgin Moto G3, and I wanted to wipe everything, unlock, and flash a custom ROM, I've done this to other Moto G3s in the past, so I didn't think I was in for a tough feat, except I cannot get past this dumb activation screen.
However, I can get past the activation screen by hitting the Emergency Call button -> Recent Apps -> Tapping the Google Search bar -> Entering into settings -> Trying to do an Allow OEM Unlock, however it is nowhere to be found in Developer Options.
I have enabled USB Debugging, but I do not know what to do from here. Is there any such adb command that can toggle OEM unlock from inside the stock ROM? The Activation will not go away, the device has been on for an hour and it's not going anywhere, even though I have full service.
If anyone can help me on this crappy journey, it would be much appreciated, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place right now.

What exactly is the problem with the activation screen??
You can do a factory reset using ADB and then try to start your phone again. Maybe that'll get you past the activation and wherever you're stuck.

You'll need minimal adb & fastboot on your PC and the USB Drivers for Motorola devices (Motorola Device Manager is preferred). Boot your G3 into fastboot mode, connect to PC with micro USB sync cable. Open a command prompt in your adb/fastboot directory. Type: fastboot erase carrier
That will kill the activation screen
Little bit of background first...
Finally got my parents (senior citizens) into the smartphone era after StraightTalk starting doing BYOP and I'd had good service so far, but rather than use his old HTC phone which badly needed replacing, he opted to buy the Huawei Sensa (H710VL) branded by TRACFONE and with service via StraightTalk. Fast forward several months, and the old man has discovered a deal for senior citizens from T-Mobile that he likes better, and has opted to switch carriers. Well, he tried to do BYOP with TMOUS and just continue using the H710VL which he likes, but was informed that they wouldn't unlock the phone for another month because they won't do so until you've had it for a year. So therein came my opportunity to promise something I apparently cannot deliver (I told him I'd take the phone home and unlock it for him)!) He (wisely) decided not to wait for me, and went ahead and bought a new phone from TMOUS so he could initiate his new service with them without delay. But I still want to unlock this phone for him, if at all possible!
Fast-forward a few more days--well, I've been screwing around with this phone in the evenings for the past three days, trying to get the bootloader unlocked, and I'm at an impasse. First I had to tangle with the Google account verification, which wouldn't let me even sign into the phone after boot and get to the home screen because I had done a hard reset of the phone first, and didn't have the old man's Google account and password with which to sign back in. Fortunately, intrepid folks who came before me already found a way around that first hurdle. I took the following steps:
1. Went thru HWStartupGuide process until I was able to connect to my home WiFi network. So, internet connection is established.
2. Backed out of there to get to the first setup screen after the TRACFONE splash screen on boot, and used the "emergency calls only" escape hatch to navigate to the stock dialer app.
3. In stock dialer app, entered (without the quotation marks) "*#*#6130#*#*" which took me to the SIM Card Settings screen. Tapped three-dot menu, tapped, "Add SIM Contact," which took me to the native Huawei Contacts app. In Contacts app for the SIM card, tapped "Add Contact," made dummy contact called "Test" with a ph# of 1234. From list of contacts, tapped the "message" bubble icon next to the new "Test" contact, which opened the stock Messages app.
4. In stock Messages app, typed and sent message with the text "www.youtube.com." For obvious reasons the message doesn't send, but it does appear in the messages window, which renders the draft text's content into a hyperlink to YouTube. Bingo! Tapped link and opened up the YouTube app.
5. From the YouTube app, tapped the three-dot menu again, and tapped Privacy Policy from there. Now I'm into Chrome! Opened Chrome without signing in, and navigated to Google.com.
6. From Google.com, searched and then downloaded apk for Test DPC app. Installed Test DPC and set myself up as the new device owner.
7. Now that I'm the device owner, you'd think it would bypass the Google account verification requirement in HWStartupGuide, but no dice. So, rebooted, took same steps to get back into Chrome. From Chrome, I was able to get to the stock Google device search and navigate to the Settings app.
8. From device Settings app, changed settings to allow installations from unknown sources, then I set the option to allow USB debugging, and opened up the dev options to select "Allow OEM Unlock" in preparation for unlocking the locked bootloader, using the unlock code previously sourced from the official Huawei EMUI unlock code site.
So, to sum up, I've got access to the device in general, can use the web and all the apps on the device, and was thus finally able to disable HWStartupGuide to prevent the previous headache from cropping up again. Here's where the impasse starts.
I have Android SDK and everything I need on my laptop (to the best of my knowledge) to facilitate unlocking, flashing, and all the other fun stuff we love to do with our phones.
I was able to confirm the USB and Android drivers are correct and working fine, as I got both fastboot and adb to recognize and list the device when connected via USB cable to the laptop, and it worked both in command prompt and in PowerShell. Fastboot and ADB commands appear to work when facilitated and entered correctly. That is...UNTIL I tried to use the "fastboot oem unlock <unlock code here>" command. It just says "FAILED" with no error code. I tried this from my stock boot options screen (the screen you get when you boot or restart with power and vol-down pressed), and from the stock recovery screen, both to no avail.
This is where I'm all twisted up. There either doesn't appear to be a true bootloader screen to navigate to, or it's purposefully inaccessible, and I don't know how to get to it. If you do a "adb reboot bootloader" command, it just reboots the phone to Android home screen. The only options from the boot options screen are "Power (turn phone off), "Start" (boot to Android home screen), "bar codes" (screen that shows bar codes for the phone's IMEI, Serial #, etc), and "reboot recovery" (stock EMUI recovery screen), where the only options are 'Wipe/Factory Data Reset," "Wipe Cache," and "Reboot."
I feel like if I could get to a true bootloader screen that allows me to enter adb or fastboot command strings in such fashion that you can enter it and then see the process play out on your device screen, then the unlock code from Huawei would probably work and the bootloader would be unlocked, thereby allowing me to root and flash a better ROM, or at least eliminate bloatware and optimize the device for performance. But for whatever reason, and I assume it's purposeful on the part of TRACFONE/StraightTalk, tbh, there isn't a fastboot-capable bootloader screen like my years of using HTC phones taught me to take for granted.
So there I be...stuck, even WITH the unlock code from Huawei! What a crock! I know TMOUS will apparently unlock it in a month or so, but to me, that's not the point. I should be able to accomplish it on my own with the unlock code I got from Huawei. And that's why I'm throwing my hands up and begging for help.
Is there anything else I can try? Is there any other devious way to perhaps flash a different bootloader interface onto the phone that would allow me to use fastboot commands properly? Is it possible to mount the SD card from bootloader and push an apk to it that would install some kind of generic bootloader screen? I'm now a little out of my league, but I am willing to try just about anything that anyone thinks might work. Any advice or suggestions warmly welcomed...not worried about bricking the phone or anything, as it's not much better than a paperweight in its current form anyway.
Thanks!!

I typed in the command to get oem_unlock_data and got my devices string. I input it into fastboot and it says "phone not eligible". I previously had a Motorola G5 plus and had no issues and aft r checking the phone is definitely eligible. I put the Gmail I use onto the phone from my Motorola account and am still having errors. I read a thread stating my device id may be within settings option of phone and if i take off this setting it may work. I cannot find this option within settings. Any ideas on how to unlock bootloader on an eligible device that is telling me is ineligible? My device also says oem_locked in bootloader screen so I know this is the case. Any input would be highly appreciated.

Go to system settings>developer options, find the OEM unlock setting and toggle it to the enabled position. To enable developer options, go to system settings>about>software info>build number(or wherever your build number setting is located in your device's settings). Tap on the build number 7-10 times quickly, this will enable dev options. Then go back to system settings and you'll see developer options has been added to the list somewhere at the bottom.
Then try your unlock method.

Hello, I recently found an LG Stylo 3 in one of my drawers that has a knock code on it. I don't remember the code and I already tried 66 times to unlock it (it now takes 240 seconds between each attempt). No "Forgot Password" or backup pin option shows up, USB Debugging is on but it's unauthorized, and the mode that it's on when I connect the phone to my PC is Charging Only. I just want to know what pictures I have saved on it, or if I can pull out my photos or something. I can't reboot into bootloader from the recovery options, it just reboots my phone. I'm able to go into recovery, and safemode, update from adb puts it into sideload mode, and it's connected to my wifi but because I changed my passwords on my google accounts already, the phone doesn't show up in any of my google device manager accounts.
Everything is stock, no custom recovery or firmware and it's not rooted.
What can I do now? Is there a way to reset my password or bypass it entirely? I don't care how technical it is, if given a good guide I can do it. I can't find anything to help me, hopefully someone can help my problem here.
Before anything, I didn't steal the phone, it's my old phone I had when on Virgin Mobile, I can give as much proof as I can to show that it is my phone if needed. I just don't remember the knock code
Thanks!
