Otterbox Defender + Foil Mod + Spigen GLAS.tR Install = Great Success - LG V10 Accessories

So I have owned the Otterbox defender series case since it came out and it hit me during the week how much I missed using the fingerprint scanner as added security feature. Being that I was also hating the fact that my temporary screen protector I bought from T-Mobile after buying the phone and the built in screen protector from the defender case made white spots on the film screen protector which too was annoying to keep clean constantly. I placed an order for the Spigen GLAS.tR per the great reviews on the forums and also on Amazon. I figured today would be a good time to mod the case to regain a function that I used to enjoy.
First step in the process was to take an x-acto knife and remove the built in screen protector.

Next the foil mod install with tape to secure the foil from moving around.
The Spigen GLAS.tR install went buttery smooth.
Now with the phone inside the bottom part of the plastic shell of the defender case.
Now a close up shot of the the top and bottom plastic shell assembled onto the phone, with the foil on the exposed square.
No annoying conductive tape on the rim of the phone like some people did to their cases.
Looks like stock, with 100% functionality.
Hope this helps people wanting to do this.

Very Nice !
Why not just use a hair dryer to remove the stock Defender screen protector instead of cutting it out?
Does the phone move around at all inside of the Defender with the stock protector removed?
Does the plastic edges of the Defender hit the edges of the Spigen Glass protector at all?

Every Defender case I had, you could pop the screen protector out just by pushing on it from the front.
Awesome job OP

I'm guessing so the fingerprint scanner will work.
I'm sure the Defender belt clip will destroy the foil though.

The phone does not move at all with the protector removed. In addition the plastic edges just clear the Spigen GLAS.tR. See the pictures.

Being the phone was designed to have your natural electricity complete a circuit for the finger print scanner to work. Putting any kind of case that does not conduct electricity decreases the effectiveness from slim to not. Since the foil is touching the metal sides of the phone, it completes the circuit, henceforth re-enabling the fingerprint scanner with a completely enclosed case.

I'm confident it does too, which is why I do not use a belt clip, phone just slides in my pocket. Who uses a belt clip for almost a 6" display phone? lol

I have the defender but I don't have issues unless my finger is wet, I can even get it to work while my hands are dirty at work

That's funny. It's exactly why I want a belt clip - who has pockets big enough for almost a 6" display phone?

Slim case that covers the entire metal bezel?

I purchased the S-Line Note 4 clear case with kickstand and it fits ok but it doesn't cover the bottom bezel portion that's under the home button. I've heard that the Ringke clear case has the same problem as well. Any ideas where I can find a clear case that covers the entire lip/metal portion of the Note 4? It doesn't have to be clear but it would need to be a soft case and not a hard one because I don't want the case itself scratching the phone after putting the case on and off a couple dozen times.

Spigen Ultra Hybrid. I have The crystal clear. I had The same concern about scratches & I'm completely satisfied with this One.

Let Me see if I can attach One on this app, #noob
It is a soft "hard" rubber case. It is made out of a TPU type silicone. It isn't flimsy. You shouldn't have to worry about it stretching out of shape over time. You have to have battery removal OCD or something for that to happen. lol
I Usually Don't Beg For a "Thanks", but help a sista out if this was helpful. (^.~)
Thank you for the pictures. It seems like your case doesn't fully cover the lip at the top of the phone. My case covers everything except the bottom lip of my phone.

Lip Fully covered unless You ate referring to The bezel (white part of screen?) if so, that part had no contact on a flat surface with this case & glass screen protector.
I'm talking about the white bezel around the glass. It looks like your case covers the white bezel on the sides of your phone but fails to protect the top portion. What if your phone falls and smacks the top bezel instead of the lip of your case?

Just looks that way because the case is clear. Here are some more images from their site.

The "case capsule" is pretty slim too. Entire front bezel covered as well.
Seems like the case covers the entire bezel around the glass in those marketing pix. Why does the sides on your pix look yellowish white?
Check out how the case doesn't fit right beneath the home button. I need someone that protects the entire bezel on all sides.

There is a glass screen protector on it as well. I am just as anal about protecting All My Gadgets. Believe Me! I am an accessory junkie I have more cases coming. This One was affordable and won't damage through finish. The lip is slightly raised as well. If it did fall flat on its face it would not get scuffed. I have this case. Tempered glass screen guard & a purse/pouch I put My phone in when it's in My handbag! I Do Not walk The streets of NYC w/ "The precious" exposed by any means. When must make a phone call in public I do say in a spot I deem "safe", that includes from being snatched out My hand to an accidental drop by slip of The hand or a bump during rush hour. I am all over this. I know for Me, this is a good minimalistic setup. Will work great for My car holster as well. I Hate Bulky Cases. Everytime I bought an Outter or something equivalent; I regretted it. Likr someone replied earlier, it's hard to get a good sense of The fit. I have a wallet case on The way as well; I found on eBay. Hope You find something that works for !

Spigen New Hybrid - thin - classy loooking - Metal outshell - Rubber Inner Shell - great protection - covers the areas you are concerned about - and I think is the classiest looking case made today.
Good Luck - hope this helps

I noticed that, too. FWIW, I have the same case on a charcoal black Note 4; there's no discoloration.
Ended up ordering the Ultra Hybrid Crystal Clear case. Thanks for the input folks.
Slapped on the Spigen Ultra Hybrid onto my White Note 4. Covers up the white bezel below the home button better than my S-Line clear case but not completely. Bummer...
I bought the Ringke Fusion case off amazon and been satisfied. It covers the bezel and has port covers too.

Note 4 cases scratching metal frame!!!!

Ive being using an spigen neo hibrid case for about 7 days.... today I read a post somewhere saying that some cases were scratching the metal frame so I went running to my bedroom, took off the case and ....... is all scratched.
Small scratches but they are there, all around the phone.
Go and check yours and let me know [emoji35]
Many of these cases especially SPIGEN and Ringke scratches your bezel, yes.
Get a Thor.
Note 4 beats your Note 3, just sayin...
I have an Urban armor gear, have removed it already many times, no scratches
I assume it depends if there is any solid plastic scraping against the frame. Luckily on my Slim Armor it's only the soft part of the case that ever touches.
In my case is the same now after think about it I realized that is not the case.
The problem is the particles of dust and sand from the pocket that found the way in and also the aluminium used for the body is really soft and scratchable.
Thats why I wanted plastic body

People have reported scratches with the UAG
It's a design flaw by Samsung. It's bound to happen with the polished aluminum

Fair enough, it just depends on whether stuff gets caught in between the case and phone.
Since the Seidio case did a number on my Note 2, I've tended to stay away from cases that grip using hard plastic. After the Seidio issue I went with a couple cases(one being Otterbox Commuter) that had a rubber inner shell and never had scratching issues after that. This time around, since the Otterbox wasn't out at the time, I went with the Incipio 2 piece case (rubber inner shell with hard plastic outer shell) and so far so good.
we wanted a metal better looking frame and they gave it to us, you can't expect it to be indestructible.
I don't think its the cases, its probably debris that get in between the case and the phone.
I removed my case over 100 times already to swap it, zero scratches.
I been using a Spigen Neo Hybrid and a Spigen Ultra Hybrid Crystal Clear cases, the second has 100s of *scratches* complains.
Polished Aluminium and Hard plastic cases is a bad idea.
Your better off getting a soft Jelly base TPU case.
I got this one for $6 Amazon and put it on and take it off all the time with NO scratches.

It has a soft silicone liner that will not scratch the edges of the Note 4.

After you posted that, I had to check and confirmed it did leave a few small scratches on the bezel using Ringke. Oh wells, better than having a scuff bezel from being dropped. I'll probably try out some aluminum polish and see if it would buff it off.
I may be completely wrong but chances are that a small piece of grit or sand or dust has gotten into the case from the front. This in turn then rubs on the metal and causes minor scratches.
I've been using the Spigen neo hybrid and luckily haven't had any scratches. Some people on here have used the same case and have scratches.
It does suck to see minor scratches but would you rather that or a nice big cracking or chip if you dropped it without a case on?

Any time you have a shiny surface that's being constantly handled, it will get scratched eventually. It's a fact of life. Just get over it and enjoy your phone!

THIS! I am sick of people saying cases are scratching their chamfered edges on the Note 4. It's f***** chamfered edges for f***s sakes, they're going to scratch up easily from normal wear and tear regardless of a case, it's inevitable if you actually plan on using your phone like a normal person.

Screen protectors

Now that the phones are arriving, what screen protectors are you using and how would you rate them ?
I just put on an "Armorsuit" protector. It was a bit of a pain to put on. It took about 5-7 Minutes and two tries. Which I guess isn't horrible. The key was to be slow and gentle when using the squeegee to remove the liquid. I put a Supcase unicorn beetle case on it after 15 minutes without the edges popping up. The feel of the screen is rubbery. The screen is 99% covered and seems like it'll offer minimum to moderate scratch protection. It doesn't seem like it'd offer any drop protection. The instructions say it takes around 12 hours to fully "cure" (cure is my word, not theirs). I'd rate this about a 3.5 out of 5 for ease of installation and protection.
Edit:Edges seem to peel after 20-30 minutes and the clarity is a bit opaque.
I just ordered spigen flex hd. should be in friday

The wet apps seem to work best because of the curve. I have used the regular xtremeguard with great success and paid less than $15 between 8 sets for both the S7edge and Note 7.
Wet application IQ shield full body on mine.

Unfortunately my Xtremeguard was backordered. Decided to pickup some full body shields from Skinomi. We'll see if they are worth $30, compared to roughly $1 for the Xtremeguards.
Iq shield isn't the greatest either. It takes forever to put on and the edges don't like to stick at all. After a few hours of having it in my case the day after install the edges started pulling up.

Must be the way the case sits. Mine seems ok so far anyway. This is the case I use

The edges were peeling before I put the case on it, but it's the belt holster that really peels the edges up. My spigen neo hybrid crystal doesn't seem to bother it.

I tried two different ones, wet type... too bad..
Anyways if you plan to put a case on it.. forget it.
the case makes the edges pop out.. was soo annoying so I just pulled it off.
I hope someone makes a tempered glass curved protector. that would be amazing.
Check out the PureGear Tempered Glass with Self Aligning Tray for Note 7...
skinomi wet install.
Its the only protector i will use. Since the phone can get wait its no problem installing it. The corners hold good if you install it right. (rubbing and drying the edges.)
Bodygaurd's screen protector was an easy wet apply and it fixed the tiny air pockets over night. The edges are about 3/4 the of the way covered so it doesn't get peeled back by a case.My only issue with this screen protector is that it feels like very soft when using your fingers but it is great for the s-pen.

I had one put on at best buy by the geek squad. I believe it was a wet application process. It covers most of the top bezel and the edges. I have it in an s view Samsung case without issues. It cost $30 and lifetime warranty.

I bought the Skinomi Matte Finish protector through Amazon. I was extremely wary, based on how well the "liquid applique" protectors of the past worked. As in, not at all. But the installation went really well. I went light on spraying the soapy water on the adhesive side, but ensured I got the whole thing coated. It's 99.9% sealed and bubble free. The .1% is the edge right above the volume keys where it appears I wasn't diligent enough in pressing that section down until the adhesive firmed up. Regardless, I would recommend this one to any of you folks. I also purchased their carbon fiber skin for the back, so I'll try to let you know how that one goes as well.

Just ordered the OEM Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Screen Protector (2-Pack) from a Florida-based e-Bay seller,ETA 8/30/16:

I've already received the OEM Leather Case from this seller,so I'm confident his mdse is the genuine article.....................
The samsung protector is good but the edges will still lift when paired with some cases. It didn't sit well with the case mate tough mag that I'm using. In the end I used a bit of sticky tape in the very edges of the protector. Holds it in place and the case hides it so no one can see it's there. Will probably leave some sticky reside but the phone is water resistant so what the hey I'll just wash it.

Pics please, and did the corners stick with that case? I put on a matte IQ Shield and it did well until I added a Spigen Ultra Hybrid. The sides are doing fine but the case is pushing up the corners.
I know matte is not for everyone, but I like it. I thought a clear case would be good for show until I saw all the crud collecting behind it.

Accessories Accessories!!!

Dissappointed did not get the free clear case. My 6T until last day I shipped it for trade in used the free included case. Worked great, I really liked it, tried bunch from Amazon and just liked the free stock one.
I am using the Spigen hybrid case on OP9.
- fits well. But the interior is a dust magnet. Almost feels sticky, hard to clean off the dust and fingerprints.
- the exterior is a horrible mess of fingerprints!!
Pulen glass protector
- thick... too thick. Front does have cut out for camera. Clear, applied well. Not a fingerprint mess. Fits well with cases.
- the rear camera protector even thicker. It also cover the lense. Does not have cut outs for the lenses. I removed cause probably adds distortion. Did not do any scientific methods to test hypothesis.
Pulen clear case with floral print
- loose fit. Slips off easily, terrible
- the sides do not have a lip to cover and provide screen protection.
- returned back to Amazon.
- DO NOT BUY
Cresee silicone case
- It has a soft texture to it, really pleasant feel
- Fits the phone well, buttons feel great
- Great case for $10
Qitayo clear thin case
- Terrible buttons. The buttons are not recessed so they fit over the buttons, they sit right on top so it's really easy to click then. I can only imagine what a disaster it would be with the phone in the pocket.
- DO NOT BUY
Orzero Premium Tempered Glass x3
- Easy to apply, the case to assist proper alignment of glass was useful.
- No issues with touch sensitivity or fingerprint
- Would recommend over Pulen.
If anyone finds glass that is thinner than 0.3mm please let me know
For sound.
Love that BT connections show battery levels for each ear piece and case. This from mpow X6 and the OnePlus Budz.
Being able to switch audio output from volume rocker. I don't remember doing this on the 6T, OnePlus dragging feet on Android 11 update for that.
I still have dongle from 6T. Senn Hd58x, AT R70x and A990z all sound great.
For gym, mpow x6 seems best. For shopping and wandering around I prefer the Budz. Their call quality seems better to people I called.
Thanks for your input!
I'm using a spigen tough armor. Sturdy, well built, perfect fit, nice little kickstand, very good protection.
It does add quite a bit of bulk though. The buttons are flush with the case so it's not immediately obvious where they are, but you get used to it really fast of course. The kickstand is also flush with the case, which is nice.
I had a spigen slim armor on my previous phone, and this tough armor offers more protection, with a raised lip all around the screen. Given the choice, I'd prefer a little less bulk than this.
Wireless charging works just fine with this case.
So, I used the Pulen glass protector on her phone. But when I did, when I went to remove the default screen protector, I actually took off the glass from my phone and not hers, oops.
Bought Orzero.

So it comes with three, a case to help apply the glass, the usual alcohol swap, wipes and dost remover and glass sticker assists to help place the glass.
Result, the frame case worked great, it's the same dimensions as most cases. Was easy to align the camera cutout and ensure a proper fit. It's clear, smooth, the 2.5D edges are fine. Oleophobic coating is as good as I've used in the past. I have no problems with touch sensitivity or finger print reader. I think it's actually better than the Pulen.
Verdict: It's $8, comes with 3 glasses, with three sets of alcohol swab, cleaner, dust cleaners. The case is helpful. I'd recommend it.
And no I'm not testing how well it works for screen protection, I've used enough of these over the past, they are all the same. The only difference is ease of use or quality.
Between Pulen or Orzero, I recommend Orzero. Pulen is fine as well
Anccer case on Amazon is nice and thin. A glass screen protector is just barely recessed on the lip however. The worst is that it's a fingerprint magnet like no other.
I got Spigen glass and I´m really dissapointed with it.
Terrible response and lots of phamton touches over the screen.
Accessories this far:
Spigen Tough Armor
UniqueMe TGSP (which I swear by)
and today I got a dual sim tray for my
North American OP9. of course on AA firmware, I didn't get service in the second sim slot. But we'll figure that one out eventually.
Also Dbrand Skin.
I'm using Gadgetshieldz skins on my One Plus 9 for 2 months and it fits very well from edge to edge, I get scratches rarely but it protects the back of my phone from getting damaged.

Accessories What case/screen protector did you go with?

With this device so new there hasn't been time for many amazon reviews for cases and what not. What did you end up going with?
I went ahead for the official translucent case and I'm waiting for screen protectors to be available. I'll try to grab a Spigen if they get released soon enough.
EDIT: I purchased the Spigen GLAStR screen protector and it should come by tomorrow. I'll see how it behaves with the Google case. I'll probably go as well for a Spigen case, we'll see. But maaaaaaaan do I love this phone, it made me go back to XDA and be involved with it...
mine buy on amazon delivered before the phone with screen protector included.
Google case. Cheap screen protector from Amazon. So far so good. No issues with finger print sensor. Few dust particles that's killing my OCD.
Went with the Spigen Liquid Air Armor...thin rubber, just to keep a grip.
Getting these for my pixel 6a today will send pics when I get them

Went with these two, screen protector went on easy with the alignment tool, and the case is nice and grippy, although that's not a card slot in the back like some reviewers say it is, it's just for grip.
Spigen Ultra Hybrid (I may switch to one of the Armors, which is what my 5a has, depending on how I like this one)
Tempered glass screen protector (has an alignment frame and worked beautifully)
Tried Caseology Nano Pop, thought it too slippery. Ended up with what I had on my 4a, Spigen Rugged Armor. Would like a spongier feel, but at least it has texture all the way up on both sides.

I am using the Spingen screen protector, it is excellent and does not cause problems with the official case
Yesterday I ordered several shells I could change them every day like that.
Spigen Liquid Air Armor and the LK tempered glass screen protector. I've had great luck with both companies in the past.
I ordered a cheap one days ago when I ordered mine, because Ghostek did not have one yet. I see they have one today listed. The cheap one actually isn't bad. A snap on outer shell and "rubber" outer cover. Back has a small window open around rectangle camera and then a clear window down the back. https://www.cellularoutfitter.com/c...phone-case-black-clear-hr-qbshbum-6apix-clrbk I still may order the Ghostek though, been using them for years.

do you have to increase the sensitivity of this glass or is it possible?

Ditto, Spigen have been my favorite for a while now
I ordered the Spigen Liquid Air Armor Designed for Pixel 6a Case (2022) - Midnight Green and [3 Pack] iVoler Screen Protector Tempered Glass for Google Pixel 6a 5G 2022 (6.1 inch)[Fingerprint Unlock Compatible] with Easy Installation Frame[Not for Pixel 6] 9H Hardness Clear Film Bubble Free
I like the case, it's nice and thin and has a good texture on the back. I might get something a little more bulky since I'm coming from a Pixel 5a with Otterbox Commuter, and I like the feeling of something more sturdy in my hand.
The screen protector worked out well. I initially had some trouble enrolling my right thumb, but on the second try it worked fine. However still some unregistered fingerprints can unlock my device... but I haven't got any OTA yet.
I bought Caseology and Spigen. Returned the Caseology, thought it didn't have enough grip. At least the Spigen has ribs the entire edge, much better grip.
is there a case to make the back of the phone flat? so the camera bump is leveled with the rest of the phone

My Spigen Rugged Armor is flat.
Dont get the iVolar, FP scanner stops reading prints after installation (even when I deleted my registered prints).
