Download a Lollipop FTF file and flash it using Flashtool

Do i need root?
No not to use flashtool use on totally stock just make sure you don't include simlock and .ta parts of the ftf. Has your phone been rooted before or is the bootloader unlocked? Usually the only thing stopping a update from verifying.

Don't erase anything before you make a backup. Flashtool works on locked and unlocked bl so Google Flashtool, download 9.18.6 version, install drivers and PC Companion (if you haven't already), download ftf with XperiFirm (last button on right in Flashtool). When proces end flash ftf to your phone.
Good Luck!

You lose all files music etc. When you flash ftf it's good to wipe all data cache especially if you up/downgrading so your phone will be as new. First start may take little longer than usual.
Good Luck!

If you are running the Stock KitKat rom , Then you should be able to download it from "Update Manager" . If not , Download the latest FTF using flashtool / xperifirm.
Worked for me.

No flash counter for locked bootloader.
You must flash the stock ftf [firmware] for your device.
There is a tutorial here.

no, it gave me no messages at all, just didn't work.
I think the problem was with the 09184 version, hours after I downloaded and installed it (which didn't work) they updated it to 09185 which worked with me after installation.
So, it's working now.

Don't forget that the Sony flashtool only works for unlocked bootloader.
If you just want to update using ftf, sony's flashtool won't work. It's just a different tool. If you want to update using ftf use the flashtool from http://flashtool.net like @gregbradley said.

I am having a problem flashing KitKat v. F.1.74_CE
I had to downgrade to be able to root and the thread said that as long as my Z3 is the dual version, I would have to downgrade to F.1.74 to be able to root, so I downloaded it and used flashtool version 0 9 18 5 to flash. but while in the middle of the process (after deleting my phone data), the flashtool says "processing of system.sin finished with errors".
this is the error message
27/020/2015 13:20:04 - INFO - Flashing data
27/020/2015 13:20:26 - ERROR - Processing of system.sin finished with errors.

27/020/2015 13:20:26 - ERROR - ERR_SEVERITY="MINOR";ERR_CODE="0017";ERR_DYNAMIC=" 80080053";
what should I do?

Hey guys,
So recently i flashed the CyanogenMod 5.1 on my Xperia Z3 device. After a few weeks, i wanted to go back to the Stock Xperia ROM, so i followed this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45187952&postcount=2 with the ftf file from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/general/ftf-stock-firmwares-xperia-z3-models-t2886061. Like in the guide above i used the flashtool to flash the complete ftf file to my Z3, but it seems that it didn't worked properly. It starts to boot and stopping to work after it shows the first menu of choosing my country, then stucks in a boot loop. I also tried out the global rom - the problem remains the same.
Can anyone help me?
Cheers.

Thanks for the reply. I thought that too and did this but it didn't work either.
I solved it with using XperiFirm from the Flashtool Software. It downloaded the newest Android for the Xperia Z3 (6.0) and flashed it.

That's EMMA Sony's own software tool for unlocked bootloaders not flashtool that's referred to in here. Your friend has flashed single sim firmware onto a dual sim device hence the message on the screen.
Use flashtool to flash the correct dual sim firmware wipe user data ect when flashing and it'll be good as new.
