A few issues with S6 - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There are a few silly issues I'm having with the phone and I just want to find out if anything can be done, for my sanitys sake.
I hate the way the screen lights up when I plug my headphones in.
I hate the fact that the countdown timer will vibrate only in vibrate mode (unlike my M7 which made a noise) but when not in vibrate mode it was only make a noise. I guess it makes sense if you think about it, but to me, its nonsense. I want it to vibrate AND make a sound in either mode, hell I'd even take sound+vibrate in ringer on mode at this point. So I can be listening to music and the timer goes off (in vibrate mode) and if I don't feel the vibration in my pocket, tough. Hard to explain, but I have to call back to the HTC M7, it didn't do this, it worked.
I hate the way that the alarm clock has increasing volume only once. If you snooze the phone, the next time the alarm goes off, it goes off full blast, no increasing volume.
I've been using XtreStoLite Deo-Mod Edition 2.4 rom with a week or so now and it's great. But I have noticed some issues which really worry me. I got this phone because it's fast. But when I press the power button there is a definate delay until the screen lights up and Facebook messenger for reasons unknown makes the phone unusable, it lags so bad and even the soft keys don't work. Never did this on other phones and my partners non-rooted S6 is fine.
It does make me wonder, is all this rooting and custom ROM worth it. So far, I've got odd lag and an app which nearly breaks the phone. If I could adblock and restore apps without rooting, I think I would unroot.

Then sell it and be happy
What is your question exactly then?

Can we automate it so your response is posted for every thread talking about issues with this phone?
My Question is, are any of my issues "fixable". I know xposed could do a lot of things for the M7. Is there something I've missed which can help me with my issues?

Chill i was making a joke
Have you tried full wipe? Or completely unroot to stock? Then back?

I have.
My Mrs has a unrooted stock S6 which I use for comparison.
The lag issues and issue with Messenger are only my phone, the isues I have with the screen lighting up with headphones plugged in and the alarm clock, we both share those.
I know the lag and messenger issue could be fixed by going back to stock, but this is the problem with custom roms and rooting. You get given nice features and you risk losing them all when going back to stock. I can live without messenger and the wake up lag I can just put up with, but it isn't right. I guess in truth I expected too much from this phone, I wanted it to be blazing fast and it just doesn't feel it.
There isn't a great range of roms either, my M7 had literally dozens of roms to try but I find with the S6, there are like only a handful.

Please advise. Captivate issues galore...

Hi all. I just got a Captivate after using Mattc on my HD2 and I used an Aria for a couple weeks as well. I used Mattc on the HD2 for a couple months and really liked it. I understood it was running from the SD and lived with the other issues like slow wake up and occasional goofiness.
So when I got my Captivate I was thinking, wow, I'll have one of(if not the) fastest Android phone on it's native hardware. Everything should rock. I should be blown away... Not.
HELP!
The brightness settings. WTF! Why did they implement like 10 ways the brightness screws with your day. On my HD2 w/Mattc I set the brightness in settings to where I wanted and it stayed. Forever. Also when it hits 10% it kicks the brightness all the way down. 10%? Com on maybe 5%. But what is worse is when it does kick it down I kick it back up but it dims again at every percent it goes down. ANNOYING. Please let me control my phone... Oh and don't get me started on the Browser brightness. Huh? Even with the browser brightness set at max it's still dimmer than my regular brightness setting. Noticably. I only keep my brightness at like 75-80% too.
Also what the hell is with the lame Calendar notification settings? Are there any?
My question is this. Is there any ROM out there that will strip all that Samsung ideology and give me a stock Android experience. Especially without the brightness issues. Why do I need to slide my notification bar to change brightness? All it does for me is just cause my brightness to vary accidentally when I don't want it to.
Why must I add on programs for my Calendar alerts to function normally? Why?
So again. Is there a ROM out there that will strip all the Samsung goofiness? If I can't get this phone to work like I want I'm going to sell it and look for a Telus HTC Desire to use on ATT. HTC phones are the best man. IMHO
Thanks.

I don't know what lame is, but I use my Google calendar and I can set notifications. I get notified. Is there a specific problem you have?

There is no stock Android experience. Android is just the core - Samsung, HTC, etc, they all add specific things in order for their specific hardware to function. If you don't want what comes on your AT&T Captivate, then you can root and uninstall the apps you don't like, flash one of the many, many cooked ROMs available on this forum (just look around - they are everywhere, and all with great pictures and descriptions and huge threads full of information), tweak settings to your heart's content, or anything else you want to do.

I don't have any add-ons and I get my alerts. What exactly isn't working for you?
Auto brightness has been off. First thing I do-
I do not get audible alerts when a Calendar reminder goes off-(and there is no where in settings to change/check this)
I had to install "Calendar Snooze" to play an audible alert for a Calendar reminder-
Phone is at 10% now fully dimmed. Nice... Considering how bad the battery life is for this phone(for me) I'll be spending a lot of time with the screen fully dimmed.

Try reading a little and you will see you can set the brightness at where you want it by un-checking the automatic brightness setting..Then you can swipe along the status bar to raise and lower the brightness..It will stay where you had it set IF the automatic brightness is unchecked..Where you have the slider at will be the brightest it will swipe to..
Set your alerts to something you can hear and turn up the volume..They work fine.
Battery life is not a issue provided you follow some advise..Bump charge it 1 time and then use it till it drains down to single digits before recharging...also make sure you back out of all programs and turn off wi-fi and gps and syncing when you don't need them. Loose any task killer program you have and run it stock..you will find your battery life is excellent..if not you may or may not have a bad battery..Lastly..if you are really dissatisfied with it..take it back..
Good Luck

In regards to the brightness, turn off auto brightness and the 'power saving option.', that should solve your issue.
As far as removing the AT&T bloatware goes, try Unleash the beast.
If you want to run Froyo try flashing a rom, I used the latest version of Cognition.
Run far away from this phone if you still have the chance.

Thanks for the advice. Although I have done all of those things. I'm kind of coming to one real main pain point that I can't seem to solve. The screen dimming at 10%. Does anyone know how to disable that? Even if I kick the brightness back up after it dims at 10% it will redim at 9% and so on...
Bitter. But hopeful.

Unfortunately, running away from this phone does seem to be good advise. It doesn't mater how slick it is in theory. Uber display and kickass hardware are useless if the basic functionality suffers due to glitches most of the other options don't seem to exibit.
I decided to play the "mod and wait" game with this thing, and I'm regretting it. Broad-brush damnations would have helped me. At this point, enough issues have came up about this hardware that a "broad-brush" sticky may be warranted. The alert issues found by the OP, may be related to his speaker begining to fail. I had a similar issue. Calander and alarm notifications began failing in some apps, but not others. The phone would still ring. Some apps could still use the speaker. Within a week, nothing could use the speaker, and I had to do the "push-on-it" fix.
It's a forum. Posts are opinions. I've been impressed occasionally by the raw performance of this phone. Yet, I've also spent hours, hours, researching problems, applying fixes, flashing, pushing on the speaker, etc. And I've spent hours "waiting" for the thing to do something simple like send an email when it did fine the day before. With as much time and effort as I've put into researching and working on this phone, I feel like I (and others) have not gotten enough stability out of it.
I propose a broad brush damnation for this phone: "slick but intermittent".

haha. Thanks for the ,.. opinion. I'm starting to feel the same way about this phone. I had super high hopes. But I'm really going to stick with HTC. They just get it. IMHO.
I think most people regret buying this phone. Or they will, when FroYo never arrives, the lag gets worse and worse, the phone dies on them, and the GPS never come close to working, the market decides not to intall your app, this, that, or the other thing force closes, etc. etc. etc.

Umm froyo is already leaked and OTA is on its way.
Lag has never been an issue.
And GPS is a software fix... proven on these boards over and over.

I think your wrong. I think quite a few people got defective phones and haven't bothered returning them, thinking that if they root it and flash a different rom that would magically fix a broken phone. This is XDA and folks here mostly do this..thus the reason for most of the complaints. Problem is..it won't change much of anything to reflash if the phone is defective..If it is broken to begin with..it will be broken no matter what you do to it.. If yours is defective..quite *****ing about it and get one that isn't..or a different phone entirely. The working ones are great..just like they are supposed to be.
I have 2 of them built in September..both work and neither is defective. This tells me many of those built prior have some issues..perhaps not all of them..but some of them certainly. This certainly doesn't make it right by anyones account..just saying if yours is defective..return it and get one that isn't.
I honestly don't understand people who have the option of doing this, not doing it.The folks at my AT&T store opened 7 different boxes and checked every one of them for any blue tint on the screen and having the 3 button recovery option..for my second one bought at the same time,so I do know there are many out there that ain't working properly..The OP of this thread..is unhappy with it..damn..loose it and be done with it if you are that unhappy..or take that one back and get them to open up the boxes and show you one that works properly...If it was bought mail order..then you should just return it as defective and get your money back..and buy where you can see it first..It's your choice...and your money.

[Q] Extremely Low Call Volume - Is this a common problem?

Hi all.
Recently got myself my first smartphone, the Nexus S on Telus. (Well, had a Samsung Omnia before, but getting a WM6.1 phone in 2010 can hardly be considered smart )
Everything was going swimmingly. I have a penchant for changing up the software innards on the devices I own, so naturally I rooted my shiny new phone and had a good time trying out all these ROMS. This was approximately a month ago.
About a week ago my phone inexplicably began to act up. My in-call volume dropped to barely a whisper, and my touch-sensitive search button would for some reason go off on it's on.
After a bit of Googling, I found out that the search button issue is affecting many other Canadian users also, something about a bug in the new radio (AUCKD1).
But I've yet to find anything conclusive about the in-call volume. There are threads who are complaining of either low or high volumes, but no workable solutions.
So as a last resort I have restored my phone to fully stock 2.3.4. One to see if it was my messing around that caused it, and to also prepare for the possibility of having to return my shiny. It may just be my imagination/denial, but the call volume seems slightly better. Not good enough for me to hear outside, but inside, with no background noise it's just slightly quieter than normal.
Another thing that is very odd. Skype volume is much louder than voice calls. To be frank it's still not loud enough to be considered acceptable, but it is definitely louder. They use the same speakers right? Why would that be?
If at all possible I'd like to avoid having to take the phone back since Telus will no doubt charge me exuberant fees for having touched the phone for more than 3 seconds and moving more than 18 millimeters away from the store I bought it from.
Please advise, XDA!
U can try install kernel voodoo sound from supercurio and apps. U can see the different.
I had try most of the custom rom. There is one rom who give me loudest call volume, but I can't remember which ROM it is. U should explore more rather than bring it to the store.
Now I'm on liquidnexusbread, but not giving me a good volume in call.
I knew it sucks... but I love this rom performance.

Am I the only one having serious proximity sensor problems (hang ups)

this has gotten to be a real serious problem for me - hanging up with my face while on a call. i am surprised this isn't talked about more here. any help would be appreciated! is it possible for the dev's to not only remove the end call button but the mute as well?
so far you are the only one that has ever reported anything like that,ya know it could be a hardware defekt
sent via my bamfed out tbolt
Nope I'm in the same boat as im sure are many others. I have only ever had it actually impact me I think twice on phone calls out of almost a hundred or so that I have had since I purchased the phone. All the others times though it was extremely annoying to keep hearing the click sounds of the screen turning on and off on and off on and off etc.
I keep hoping for a software update that addresses the sensitivity of the sensor, but still no
I also wonder how much the battery is affected by the screen turning on and off repeatedly while in a phone conversation...
I get the same. More on my right ear than my left, but it will often take a digit that I just typed for an automated system and try to dial it, resulting in an alarm tone in my ear during the conversation.
sorry but i have 3 different bolts, the 1st one was rooted stock had that problem but it also went into the brick loop so it got replaced, rooted that one but never had the prob again, this one has the bamf 2 prev 3 on it and no probs that is why i suggested harware cause my first one had major hardware issues
sent via my bamfed out tbolt
i get it too. but i dont call so much. so i dont really care lol
I too had this problem, and did some quick searching on Google. Stumbled upon someone who said to spray it with canned air to clean it out. To my surprise, it worked. There is just enough room between the screen and the body of the phone for dust/crap to get in and it hinders both the light and proximity sensors.
You might be holding the phone in a weird position?
THUNDERBOLT
Damn, you lean something new every day, this thing makes phone calls too!
I've had the issue too recently. But it only started when I returned the last phone to stock. Before that, I had a small issue with it, but it didn't happen often.

I have the screen turn on during calls, but I've never had a face hang up. Honestly I think the screen turns on for me, but can't be interacted with.
Scratch that just did a test. I guess I'm lucky. Then again I don't hold the phone flat to my face. So I guess I would never hit it...
i have had hangups, the mute button pressed, and a 3 way call started. i just tried blowing the screen out with some compressed air as someone suggested. it seems better - will give an update after some testing.
No issues with hang ups for me. Had that problem all the time coming from the X.

I have the same problem and have had it with every Rom I've run and stock. I'm surprised we don't have a way to adjust the proximity sensor yet, that's something I really miss about my Droid X.
After answering a call and putting the tb to my ear, my screen stays on.
Sometimes my ear dials numbers, sometimes the screen stays illuminated but doesn't respond to any touch! I have to toggle the screen on/off with the power button to get the touch response working again.
I have never had an issue. Been on mostly whatever the latest bamf release since rooting.
It happens to me whenever I forget the bluetooth especially after working out or anytime facial area is warmer then normal. I have a screen protector and clean the screen frequently.
I am having the same issue, so I called Verizon yesterday and they are sending me a new phone. I hope it works, because it makes talking on the bolt almost impossible.

Have the same problem...its really annoying man....will not get a refurbished unit until they fix the reboots

Quick Question

So im running CM7 i believe and it is rooted everything is good on my phone just a couple of quick questions about things that seem to be annoying me.
1. Does anyone else's phone seem to heat up pretty quickly with extended use? For example if i've got the screen on and I'm texting for like an hour straight it gets pretty warm to a hot sensation right on the metal part that holds the SIM card in and the SD card. The phone also heats up when its charging too, i'm assuming that is normal.
2. I have ADW Launcher and the Cyanogen Mod or whatever it's called. The issue is that when I'm playing music and get a text my audio will completely pause (but the song keeps going) and then keep going which tends to get annoying when I'm enjoying a part of the song and I miss it entirely because of a notification. I've tried to set it up so that it ducks the audio 4db but it doesn't seem to work for me. Does anyone know how to fix this?
3. Sometimes when I receive texts i can hear it through my speakers of my computer coming but my phone will never fully "receive" it so it sits in limbo forever. Does this happen to anyone else?
4. Battery problems, it seems to die a little quicker than i'd like. I've got it on the lowest brightness, no internet, no bluetooth, no gps, wifi usually on but when i'm not near a wifi hotspot i turn it off. Is there a solution to this?
Thanks for any help in advance

Overheating is pretty much the norm on the G2X. Perhaps there are other ways to deal with this, but one way for sure is to go to settings-->applictions-->development and click stay awake. This reduces the overheating while charging. If you get a lot of overheating it might be the battery.

Also, once a phone is unlocked it is unlocked for good right? Even if i put different ROMs and such? Cause i bought this phone 2 months ago unlocked with it rooted and flashed with this stuff. I'm asking because I'm scared that if i try putting a different ROM on it that won't be unlocked anymore. I don't know the unlock code or anything lol
Edit: And i know the G2X camera is bad so I'm wondering if there is a way to make it permantly increase the exposure to +1 or +2 instead of me having to change that every time i open the camera app or is that not possible?
also im thinking of ditching the g2x all together for the samsung galaxy s2 do you guys think it is worth it? I don't know if the S2 has any problems as bad as this phone. It's going to cost me 100 dollars to upgrade to it in the end. Thoughts?? or maybe the samsung galaxy nexus

If your phone was unlocked (not the same as rooted) it will stay that way. ROM away as you wish.
Unlocked = can use on any SIM based carrier
Rooted = means you can do whatever you want to your phone software-wise.
I myself have the heat problem but it was partially fixed when I decided to mess the overclocking and undervolting made available by custom kernels. To fully fix this problem with my phone overclocked to 1.4ghz and undervolted I took some aluminium foil layered a few pieces together and cut it to the size of the back. I added a bit of extra aluminium to where the sim is because it seems like that is where most of the heat comes from and now my phone becomes warm but not warm to the touch now that it can disparate heat faster.
Very nice idea but wouldn't the aluminium retain the heat to the battery causing it to overheat

I rooted a friend sgs2 for him. its through sprint. so far it doesn't seem very great semi laggy and I would not want 1. Sprint internet seems very slow as well. My g2x puts his sgs2 to shame. I did leave him on stock rom though so maybe it would be better if I souped it up

[FIX] Weak vibration on your S4? Here is a creative work around!

The only thing I really don't like about the Galaxy S4 is that the vibration is fairly weak. Working in an office I need to have my phoen on vibrate as a colorful ringtone is simply not an option. But I miss text messages and phone calls on occasion because I just don't feel the phone vibrating in my pocket.
Heck even if I have it laying on a nearby table sometimes I still don't hear it vibrating.
I have come up with a sollution acceptable work around to this issue!
I made a vibration sound as my ring tone. So now when the phone vibrates it also goes BzzzBzzzBzzz out of the speaker.
It's barely loud enough to be heard by anyone but you if it's in your pocket. If anyone else does hear it, it still just sounds like a normal vibrating phone. No obnoxious ringtone.
If you want to try this out I've included 3 WAV files in the attached zip.
- Base Vibration Sound.wav - This is the sound file I used as a base for the final ringtones I made. I have scoured the internet looking for vibration sounds. This one is the one that sounded most like an actual vibrating phone. Use this file as your source if you want to try this technique out but don't like the final products I created.
- Ringer Vibration.wav - I added some bass and increased the volume, and extended the length of the original source file so make a loud, long, steady vibration sound that is roughly the length of a normal incoming call vibration.
- SMS Vibration.wav - Same bass and volume changes as the Ringer Vibration, but it's 3 short bursts insead of one long steady vibration. I did this because 3 short burts is how I've always set my my SMS vibration sequence. There are pauses between each vibration in the squence so you can hack up he file and change the vibration pattern as needed easily enough.
Hopefully this idea helps someone else.
Note, I still have the phone vibrate and ring in settings so it still vibrates. The vibration sound is jus in addition.
This is still a work in progress for me. So if you can improve on it please do and share your version here! If there are any real audiophile geeks out there who can make this sound really good, please share your talents! I am NOT an audio guy by any means. I just found a vibration sound file online and modded it with a little cutting and pasting and enhancement options using a free program called Audacity on Ubuntu. So if someone has and knows how to use high quality audio modification software to do this properly, by all means please show us what youv'e got!
Wow, thinking "out of the box"! Good sh*t! Another way to strengthen ur vibrate is through ktoonesz kernel, in the extras menu (ktweaker, comes with the kernel), you can change the strength.

I use CyanogenMod for the T Mobile variant (I have a 919) and it has a feature to let you increase the strength of the vibration. But even at it's max it's not that powerful.
Does hat ktoonesz kernel make a significant difference for your variant? I don't have access to the kernel but I can certainly get devs to port that mod to 919 kernels if it works.
I think the problem isn't how much power that is sent to the vibration motor. It's that the unit itself doesn't vibrate much.
If you've never seen one, all a vibration unit is is a small electric motor with a lopsided weight on the end so it wobbles when it spins. When it spins fast the wobble becomes a vibration.
The S4 vibration unit (I'm trying REALLY hard not to call it a vibrator....haha) simply doesn't have a very lopsided weight on the end of the motor. So it doesn't wobble much.
I never messed with it, I just use his recomended settings (except for oc)...it ranges from 15-125. I'll mess with it and see for you. As far as a kernel goes, it's the best imo, never fc my phones unless I oc it to the max, which is 2.3 I think, I can oc to 2.1 with no problems. The incredible part is that it is great on the battery, even oc'd, i get better battery life than stock, weird imo, but I'm still very new to all this.
VIBRATOR check, LOL, didn't seem to change at ALL, felt the same, I have seen a lot of ppl commenting on it though, on how it works. You mentioned you don't have axx to it? You mean to work on it?

No I mean that kernel just runs TW roms, doesn't it? Or am I thinking of a different one?
I always run CM/AOSP ROMs and never use TW

Sent from your phone. You should be careful where you leave that thing.
