[Completed] Cannot remove an app with Administrator privileges... - XDA Assist

First off, this is not my phone, but my dad's, so I'd really like to avoid a factory reset. Also, the phone isn't rooted.
He managed to install some Wifi Tools app, which is a quite an ugly virus. Even the reviews say what an absolute crap of an app this is. Its even messing with the phone's mobile network connectivity.
So, the issue is, I can't remove this app. I can go into Device admins, and select deactivate on the bottom right part of the screen , but I can't even select 'Deactivate' in the window that pops up afterwards. Even if I tap furiuosly on the screen, nothing happens. After that, the settings app is all messed up. It doesnt react to most inputs, like it's frozen, or I can only scroll, but can't enter any subsections. 'Curiously', I can't enter the Security subsection if I don't restart the Settings app, even if everything else works.
How the hell do I remove this hellspawn? I know I can't do it through ADB because it has Admin privileges. Admin privileges that can't be revoked.

Hello,
Your options are:
1)root the device and then you can get rid of the app.
2)use the factory reset option in system settings to reset the device.
3)boot to stock recovery and use the factory reset and wipe cache option in recovery.
4)the last option you won't need but you can restore the stock firmware via whatever flashtool the device uses.
If you are trying to avoid resetting the device to prevent losing data then try rooting the device and just use root access to remove the app. Depending on the rooting method you won't lose any saved data.
If you don't like either of those options, try posting your question in the forum linked below.

Thanks for the answer, but I already solved it. I rooted the phone with Framaroot and then nuked it from the phone with Titanium Backup. Afterwards, I locked down root access/rights as best as I could. Better safe than sorry heh.

You can remove root access if you think its too risky for your dad, if you think he may at some point make a big mistake because of root access I would recommend removing root to avoid getting the device in a situation that nay not be fixable. If you need root later you can re root it like you did this time, you may can even go a step further and install a custom recovery and use it to create a nandroid backup, then if at some point something goes wrong you can just restore the nan droid and be back to how everything was when the backup was created. You might even be able to make the backup then remove root and if you need root back you can restore the band to is and have root to do what needs to be done. Just a few options for you, whatever you think would work best.

stuck in reboot cycle after stupid move

Hi guys,
First of all I want to apologize with everybody here but I need help and I know that I might be drowning in a cup of water but right now I feel very frustrated because I can't find the answer to this...
ok, now I have a T-Mobile G2X, I was reading how to root, do backup, recovery, etc, and I was doing some research of how to go back to stock with all the t-mobile apps, so I went to a thread that was explaining that he had to use first clockworkmod before doing anything, so what I did was just plug my phone, activated the debug mode and click on a script file from the new version 4.x of clockworkmod, after that it messed up the phone started to force close apps, so I turned it off and back on, my surprise.... cycle reboot
now I cannot do anything with it, if I press the vol down button with the power it goes to a screen that says S/W upgrade Please wait while upgrading, I left it there hoping that it will come up soon
Can you guys help me??, I'm very frustrated
Thank you.
What had you actually done to your phone prior to clicking on the script? Had you already rooted it?
it was not rooted, i think that's why this happened, but i thought that wasnt needed since i was trying to do a backup BEFORE doing anything, ha stupid me
Did you try to do a factory reset by holding down the volume down and power button?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
^ What tq745 said.
And then follow this guide word for word if you want to root/flash roms:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060715
I tried the factory reset and came a different screen but what I needed to do is to hold down the buttons for more time, now at least it boots
I still want to try the rooting, so let me have this clear, rooting the device doesn't delete any apps or config right? this is until you start messing with the roms and that.
thanks for the help guys!
yes rooting does not delete apps u do that yourself lol. it gives u superuser access, the ability to remove bloatware or freeze them (tmobiles apps) you can change the fonts, super cid, the ability to have another carrier on your phone if wanted, install custom roms and kernels, tether, and backup apps with titanium backup, which i suggest if u do root, awesome app and tool . basically u cant do this with a stock unrooted device.....also our super one click root is pretty simple just one click after u have lg's drivers installed, and its just as easy to unroot if u had too (like bringing it back to tmobile, warranty exchange).... to unroot its the same program just click on it and u will see unroot too.....pretty effin awesome...
wow now I understand it more, thanks for the explanation friend.
I'm following the tutorial that phburks posted, in there is the backup process, I hope everything goes perfect (fingers crossed)
thanks again!
The "script" was probably that NVFlash app that was created. Being improperly NVFlashed is why its stuck.
You need to remove the battery, hold both volume keys down while inserting the USB cable. Then follow the steps of NVFlashing.
Once you NVFlash and have a good clockworkmod setup, then you need to reset data, clear caches, and flash a good rom.

How to do nandroid like backup on a unrooted stock phone?

My phone went through the boot loop and I had to factory reset and lose everything this morning. OK, my bad for not backing up, though I did back up some things like photos.
I want to ensure my other phone doesn't have this issue -- and the only 'full backup' I'm aware of (nandroid) requires the unlocked bootloader which this phone does not have. So what is the best way for me to back up this phone PRIOR to unlocking bootloader and forcing a factory refresh?
I know I can back up photos and other stuff relatively easy, but these things I had to restore on my phone manually:
Texts (Use SMS Backup and Restore, I know, but hadn't run it recently)
Custom Ringtones (Not sure how to do this other than manually)
Application Data (since some apps do store the data locally)
Is there anything proactive I can do or any magical non-root stock supported app to back up this phone 'just in case'?
Thanks.

Well you can unlock it yourself. To do nandroid backup you need custom recovery. To get custom recovery you need unlocked bootloader.
Helium, by ClockWorkMod, will do what you want, I think, and doesn't require root (although it will use it if available). It's in the Google Play Store. I'm not sure what the down side of rooting is, though.

Hi.
Had the same problem as you until i unlocked, i did a full backup using this method.
http://omegavesko.github.io/SimpleADBBackup/
With this method you don't have to unlock or root for just making a backup, i am restoring my backup from before unlocking and rooting as i write this so i hope it did its job.
The backupfile was 8 gb so it must have produced something
I will give you a report as soon as it have restored everything.
Best regards

Ok, so the backup was rolling during the night, but i can warn others that my method described above did not work. Maybe i did something wrong but no pictures, no music and no apps did get restored after the backup.
The positive is that im now unlocked, rooted and installed twrp now checking for wich kernel and image to use, i have to read up a bit before next step.

ZTE Z830 (Compel) Rooting Thread

ZTE Z830: As some of you (who have recently broke your high-end devices like me!) know this is a cheap "GoPhone" you might have purchased as a replacement. As some of us know: the phones Hardware isn't bad for a low-end device. All very capable. The problem however; THE DAMN RESTRICTIONS ZTE HAS PUT ON THE PHONE.
Here are the problems in case you don't own a Z830:
No Apps are allowed on the SD-card
The bloatware cannot be uninstalled
Almost no internal memory (ZTE claims "4 Gigs of internal storage" but there is only around 800MB when disabling all unnecessary apps)
Anyways if you are stuck like me and have been suckered into buying this prepackaged paperweight. You most likely have one goal: ROOT IT. Which is the main point of this thread; as all of the other forum posts about this phone seem to be with people who have even less knowledge than I have about rooting. I want to figure out how to root this phone so it can live up to its capabilities.
I'm posting here about the methods I've been trying to root this phone with; so someone who has more knowledge about general rooting and coding then they can chime in and add some info.
First Attempt (FAILED) to Root the Device
ALSO KNOWN AS UPDATE.ZIPThe BREAKTHROUGH Information: I've managed to find the stock recovery from the phone's firmware. By pressing Volume Up + Power I got into the phones menu with various options to "update the firmware" It looks like this:
Android system recovery <
Z830V1 . 0 . 0B14
Volume up/down to move
highlight;
Press power to select.
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from sdcard
apply update from cache
md5 cache
So I tried to the original rooting method and this is what happened
-- Install /sdcard ...
(Installs about 25%)
Package corrupt.
Installation aborted.
So anyways: I would love some help trying to discover how to root this damn thing. If you own one of these and find some more breakthrough info I would love to know; because I am as well messing with this thing to see if this will ever work.
Just Tried TowelRoot. Doesn't support the z830.
Bump
I didn't want to post a new thread, is there any new information on this front? It doesn't seem like this was a popular enough phone to warrant it's own set of instructions
**************************************
A few of us were successful in finding a perm root. I know the phone has aged a bit now, but it really is a nice cheap spare phone without the bloatware.
The following instructions for the ZMAX worked perfectly but TWRP does not support the touch screen for the z830 so you have to use an OTG mouse to use TWRP. Touch functionality works fine once the entire process is complete. Uninstalling bloatware seems to have to be done with a 3rd party app such as Purify.

Hey, I decided to pitch in as I also have this unfortunate phone. adb does in fact work, but it is crippled. I cannot perform "adb reboot bootloader" as it will simply reboot the phone normally. I tried to boot into the bootloader by pressing volume down+power and was entered into field test mode, as I have come to understand (says FTM on a white rectangle). Volume UP + power does put me in recovery mode, which is cool. Most interestingly, hold UP+DOWN+POWER mounts on my windows machine as ZTE handset diagnostic interface DFU... which apparently is made for flashing firmware with zte's own utility. adb reboot fastboot also just rebooted it normally.
if anyone knows of a useful test i could perform or a could point me towards new strategies i would appreciate it.
Well that sounds promising. It seems like we're breaking new ground here though.

I have the same phone and it's about worthless without root. Hopefully someone cam figure it out. I would even donate some cash for a solution.
Sort of temporary root achieved with KingRoot
So, I have this goofy phone and I did manage to get something that appears to be root using KingRoot. The PC version didn't work, and neither did TowelRoot or OneClickRoot. Downloading the apk for KingRoot and running it gave me root access, but only until I rebooted the phone. I managed to install SuperSU which allowed me to confirm that I had root. Unfortunately I was not able to uninstall any pre-loaded software while rooted via KingRoot or KingUser. KingRoot acted like it had successfully uninstalled the pre-installed software, but all it uninstalled were the updates. I didn't get a list of software when I tried to uninstall software via KingUser.
So we can boot into Recovery, and can get temporary root. Any ideas on how to get farther with this crippled phone?

Did you actually gain any space when you uninstalled items with that temporary root? I am able to uninstall updates on default apps even without root. I had one time with KingoApp where it claimed to be rooted, but I lost it with reboot and haven't gotten it back. Very frustrating. Wish I had avoided the reboot.
nothing works
I too got temporary root with kingroot, got to ambitious with uninstalling system apps and got into a force close loop. A factory reset from the stock recovery got me back in business. I didn't think that a factory reset was supposed to recover apps deleted while in root access. Also kingroot didn't work the first time for me, had to try several times, that was with latest apk, 4.1 I think.
Has anyone contacted zte about a bootloader unlock code? I know most phones it is necessary to unlock the bootloader to gain permanent root access. Plus then maybe we could get a custom recovery. I tried contacting them with no luck.
Talked to zte today, won't give unlock code since it will void warranty. Told them I didn't care about warranty since phone is worthless as is, no luck.
It could work the method used in the ZTE Z970? http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/help/zte-zmax-rooted-kingroot-t3110178
I was able to get temp root with Kingroot but doesn't stick after reboot. Today I got root to stick by using Flashify to flash superuser zip (http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu). I then deleted Kingroot apps. I was able to uninstall some ATT apps but not google apps. I tried SD Card Fix but didn't work and still can't change/mount r/w in root explorer.

Bootloop from root app permissions

Alright, where do I start?
So I'm not really and expert on flashing stuff on Android. I was pretty comfy not rooting my phone for more than a year. TBH, I didn't really need it, because I was not a power user, but I've recently installed a root app called King User (King Root, etc.). Before you say anything... YES! I know it is the lazy way to do it. It made things easy for the very few apps I could not use without root permission. However, when I received the latest OTA (5.1.1. security update) I had to disable root authorization in order to install it. So I disabled it using the app's built in authorization setting.
The OTA update failed and gave me the error with the opened up android and the red exclamation mark. So I thought that the app messed something up. Disabling in house did nothing. Uninstalling it did nothing. So I decided to replace it with SuperSU using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/help/replace-kinguser-supersu-t2903003. I bet I'm not the only one who had problems after doing this. This, obviously, made things even worse. After SuperSU deleted KingUser and updated itself the phone remained stuck inside a bootloop. So I figured this replacement process messed up permissions.
Here is where it gets tricky, or rather stupid... My bootloader is locked and I have no custom recovery (because like I said, I just needed temporary root access for a couple of apps and wanted to avoid the hassle). When I enter Recovery mode in default fastboot it gives me the "No command" error (probably because of SuperSU permission). Now I don't even know if the phone is rooted or not. USB debugging was not enabled last time the phone was on and now I think I'm stuck in this point where nothing works without something else. I've been reading a couple of threads around here and elsewhere and I don't know what to do next... Doing a full recovery now would probably be asking for a lot, but right now, I would be happy if I could just do a factory reset or something...
Anyone?

Start here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53439068. I'd return to stock and start all over, it will wipe your device, see the return to stock thread linked there. Then don't be lazy and read some more in the thread I linked you to. The n5 is one of the easiest devices to work with and you don't need kingroot, tool kits and junk like that

You should flash TWRP custom recovery on your phone that way you can copy your personal data to your pc first, then you should flash the factory image

Thanks, but that is not possible, as I have not enabled USB debugging before bootloop. I need to unlock the bootloader (wipe) to install TWRP and backup data.
Can you get into fastboot mode? You can flash twrp from there no USB debugging needed

Problem is his bootloader is locked, so follow fastboot for unlocking bootloader and then clean install latest factory image. Also, flash twrp after everything is working (and relock bootloader if you want) so this does not happen again.

Did just that. All fine now. However, I had to flash all .img files separately in fastboot (system, boot, cache, etc.), because adb was not working. Had some problems with the drivers. The device did not show up correctly within device manager. Fortunately, I did not loose anything. Had all my contacts and apps backed up with Google.
Thanks for all advice! I appreciate everyone's guidance.

Question Cannot restore app data

Hi all,
I just got my Pixel 7 Pro few hours ago and I'm followed the instruction to copy my app and data from my Pixel 4. But it seems that some apps are not restored and some are restored but no data.
Is there anyone who can recommend a tool to backup data on my Pixel 4 and then restore them on Pixel 7 Pro (I would like to avoid to root it)? I should be able to find the APK to re-install some of the apps.
I tried Helium (Carbon) (I used it many years ago) but some apps cannot be backup (Helium says "not allowed").
Thanks a lot,
Axello
If the apps you are trying to restore are 32bit apps they will not restore, or work any longer.

Usually, as a rule of thumb, you need to be able to root both devices in order to transfer the data part of backups....
I could be wrong here; but isn't there ways to install apps through adb and/or backup and restore through adb? Maybe someone else out there can help....
You could always unlock bootloader, root, transfer apk's and data, then unroot and even re-lock bootloader (I do NOT recommend doing this last part as many people have bricked their device doing so unnecessarily...)...
If you do go that route, a lot of people are using Swift Backup with almost complete success and/or I saw a couple of people still using Migrate....
I personally haven't had issues with Swift, but I transferred most everything through the cord; but on the select times I used them for apps that didn't come from the Play Store, it worked perfectly...

Is root easy/safe?
Would Google updates still be pushed on the phone without issue?
I think I saw some post about root, I'll go read them but I'm still concern I am not knowledgeable enough to do it...

I would say that basic rooting is relatively safe; in most cases if all else fails, you can simply load up bootloader mode and flash the stock factory image to restore your phone. Unless you are installing custom ROMs, kernels, or modded Magisk or some modules, you should be safe as attempting to apply those things (instead of merely just having root access) is what has a higher risk of bricking/bootloops where you can't access recovery or bootloader mode.
But I just realized that you are attempting to transfer data from a Pixel 4. In order to root the Pixel 4 to get access to the app data, you would have to unlock the bootloader which factory resets the phone -- so the point is rendered moot and goes against the whole point.
So, I guess I don't have anything else to suggest as having root access seems to be the only real way of accessing and transferring/backing-up app data.
Again, you might ask someone more knowledgeable if it's possible to use the adb commands to backup and restore apps with their data....

Yes, maybe there is not much choice then. One of the problem is an app that didn't get the data transferred and I cannot login anymore (company has bankrupted)
