[Q] Doubts about unlocking bootloader and rooting

Hi guys,
I've been playing around with my Nexus S for about 3 weeks and I've decided to root it, but I have some question, I've been searching the answers in older posts but it's not quite clear yet, hope you can help me.
When I unlocked the bootloader, what kind of data will be wiped? It's just the SD card or also all the apps I've already downloaded? what about SMS, pictures and videos?
Is there anyway I can backup that data considering I haven't root it yet???

dont do it man. i just got my phone yesterday at 1 pm and its now 12am and its bricked by lack of support from the cummunity. i studyied and studied 4 around 10 hours. then bricked my device. and i have a good idea i wont be getting a replacement this time

lol what? its nobodys fault but your own. all the resources are available, just because somebody isnt responding to your threads and holding your hand to restore a nandriod backup doesnt make it a "lack of a community".. and your phone isn't bricked, it can be recovered but you are too close-minded and cant install Clockwork Recovery / get drivers working
The data that will be wiped are most likely your SMS/settings/etc. This is standard procedure. And its something you'll go through a lot when you are using custom ROMs.

There are complete instructions for rooting, unrooting and unbricking your phone. It's all here in the forums, and many other places, you just have to look and learn. I read for two weeks before I unlocked and loaded a ROM into my NS.
If you don't have a need to root your phone I wouldn't do it just because you can. I wanted to run the Voodoo app so I had to root and load a ROM. It took a little while but it was painless and I liked learning about the Android system.
You do have to backup your app and your SD, but that was the easy part.

It's close to impossible to brick a nexus device. They purposely come with totally open boot loaders specifically for that purpose!

its not only Nexus devices but like I said people are using the term brick wrong. with these new phones coming out, a lot of them are hard to brick.
if you're phone is able to get into recovery/start/download mode (odin not popular but still an option)/bootloader then its not bricked.
if its unable to start in any form or way.. its considered a brick. please stop using the term in its wrong definition.
"brick" describes a device that cannot function in any capacity (such as a device with damaged firmware)
In the strictest sense of the term, bricking must imply that software error has rendered the device completely unrecoverable without some hardware replacement.

I think guys you have lost focus about my question, it's not about how to root (there is a lot of info about), it's about what kind of data will be wiped and how to back it up

What's the best way to do it? It's there an app or I have to day it by myself?

Make a nandroid backup first and foremost! Use Titanium Backup to make a backup of all your apps. If you want a backup of your sms, go sms pro really does a great job of that. Dont forget your contacts as well! Then copy your sd card and place it on the hard drive of your computer. When you unlock the bootloader, it does wipe your sd card. Once your unlocked and rooted, you should be able to restore everything once you replace the copy of your sd card back on the phone. Coming over from a Vibrant, I was nervous about rooting the phone but its an easy process. Just take your time and do lots of reading! Hope this helps!

Thenx, but I still have one doubt, if I haven't root my phone yet, will nandroid or titanium work?

and had no problems. Once you get unlocked/rooted and clockwork recovery, then you can make the fore mentioned backups. Export your contacts to the sd card then copy the sd card to the hard drive of your computer before unlocking the boot loader. I do not think apps get affected during the sd wipe unless you have them stored there.

i followed the instructions to flash gri74 back to stock and my phone wont turn on, wont goto any mode, wont read that its hookedup to my pc
isnt that what we call a brick? ive had issues on a galaxy s with this game issue. htc devices i can fly through the root procedure but i got this 1 rooted, tried reflashing to stock and the phone wont turn on at all.
may i suggest a noob proof guide|? i postted 1 in the htc desire forum and people love it. yesterday i returned a moto xoom because ti was overheating , got a nexus s and 2day il b returning that because it wont turn on. can any1 help me think of a good idea i can tell the future shop return people?

you are forced to lose your data to initially root your device. then after that point, you can always create backups and never lose data again while you switch between ROMs and flashing etc. but i think to initially root, you have to lose everything. not the sd card though.

Do keep in mind, we don't have an i9020 or an i9023, we have an i9020A So the instruction out there all need to take that into considerations. I rooted mine fine with no "Bricking" I had to follow the instruction for the i9023, but it worked. I figure it took me all of 1 minute to root my phone. Admitedly, the "One click root" for the Galaxy series was easier.
I try to make it a point to never be the "First" person to do something on their phone. Much safer that way.
I also find it very unusual that you've managed to brick two phones, I've also had the pleasure of owning the telus fascinate, and not once did i get it bricked, I tried Bionics, CM7, Darky's and a bunch of other ones. Just never mess with the boot loader. When you went back to stock, did you make sure it was a stock ROM for the I9020A?
Have you tried connecting the USB to a computer, holding the volume up (or in the case of the galaxy, both up and down) While powering on the device? I've had to use that a few times to recover my galaxy (Thank you odin!!).
Now in regards to the OP, I would recommend using a program like Ti to back everything up, unlock the bootloader then restore from Ti, it's a little more hassel, but you can pretty much keep your settings and data. Personally, i rooted my phone before configuring a single thing on it.

there is no way to make a good backup without rooting.
basically yes, you will lose all your settings
there are a few apps you can use to backup your apk before unlocing/rooting the phone.
look for App admin on market https://market.android.com/details?id=az.mecid.appadmin&feature=search_result
the stuff backed to SD does not get wiped
only the internal storage stuff

i took about 12 minutes total to unlock my bootloader, flash clockwork, and flash a custom rom. its not difficult if you pay attention to what you read. youre phone is not bricked. btw, i read your threads. if you werent so demanding, i would have helped. use the pdanet website the next time you need to install the proper driver, and follow the directions that they give you.

When I unlocked I used Astro to back up my apps, I turned on the Google data sync to back up my contacts and I did a back up of my SD on my computer.
When the unlock and recovery was done NS asked for my Google account then it restored all my contacts, Astro restored all my apps and I restored my files from my computer. A few steps but not difficult at all.
You will have to redo your accounts and data, and maybe an app or two won't load but the market will show them installed, just reinstall any that didn't.
Make sure you follow the directions properly in the forum. I had to use two computers to get it to work, but it did work and nothing was damaged.
With all that said.... This was the first time I have ever owned or altered an Android phone. Sure I was nervous... Now I'm hooked.. haha
I wound up using NSCollab .17 so far so good..

First thing I did when I got my phone was fastboot oem unlock.
Even if you don't want to root, use another ROM. Fastboot unlock it so your data doesn't get wiped.
If your hardware and everything seems okay, then flash Clockwork Recovery and do a nandroid backup so you can restore to pre-flashing point if you need it for OEM purposes.
Afterwards, go crazy and flash like theres no tomorrow and find something that you'll like.
And agreed with simms. You've made so made so many threads about this. I would help you step by step but I've been busy so I can't do that anymore. But if you search, you'll find about two or three threads where I did help somebody get their phone to a working state.
The basic idea is... if your phone doesn't boot but you can get to recovery.
- Download a ROM or Nandroid backup
- Install USB drivers
- Fastboot oem unlock (if you haven't)
- fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (or whatever the recovery.img is named) should be in /sdk/tools
- reboot into recovery (adb reboot recovery)
- mount and storage: mount USB, put the nandroid backup or ROM onto phone
- nandroid restore or flash a ROM (wipe factory,dalvik,cache --> flash ROM (if its CM7.. flash gapps afterwards)
- reboot
your phone boots. alternatively, you can use Odin but thats not a popular method but the choice is available if you wish to go towards that approach

in the worse worse possible case scenario there is always ODIN to the rescue

I have "jailbroke" many iPhones and in the begining I always had a backup just in case. Is this not a possibility right now for the HTC Doubleshot?

Don't hate yourself, everyone starts somewhere. Welcome to android, where a stock, un-rooted device is capable of much more then a jailbroken i-anything.
There are a couple of ways to go about getting a backup - click the link to backup guide in my signature to see how to go about making backups of your data (both through ADB and CWM).
If you want to grab a ROM file from the dev section, supposing you don't have your own backup:
In the dev section:
De-odexed stock repack
Stock - equivalent of a factory reset on a fresh device
And also, Undeadk9 made a stock version that is de-odexed, has root and so forth, check it out:
Stock - rooted, busybox, etc...
Also, once you get from S-ON to S-OFF there really is no way to go back, but it won't have any impact on your warranty or exchange ability if needed.

Thanks. I am looking forward to this. If you are referring to the Stock ROM uploading by UndeadK9 or PaulObrian ( i think those were the names) I have already kind of glanced over those. The DEVs made sure to mention that they weren't 100% stock and It was "flashing" at my own risk. I don't mind this. I am just worried that if I mess up somehow I won't be able to take it back to T-Mobile to get a new one because they will see that it has been rooted... I

The one that is the equivalent of a factory reset on a fresh device is what you would want to use, if you wanted to go back to stock, with an odexed ROM, and all.

Turn your phone back on it should resume revs picks up where it left off normally. If it doesn't hit power and volume down at the. Same time that will bring you to hboot (skating androids) verify you have s off in the upper right it should say s off. Then reboot.
You should be fine. And if it won't turn on as in power up you may want to check your battery

Pull battery and wait for about 10 seconds then reinsert. Then, while holding the volume down button, press and hold the power button for about a second. Sometimes it takes me a few tries so you might just need to try again. Also, the revolution recovery is pretty crappy and you should update it to the modaco 4.0.0.9 recovery asap. Good luck!

Yeah it's always a good idea to make sure you read everything thoroughly, write down the steps, and give it a practice run in your head so you're sure you've got everything figured out. Back when I had my mytouch 4G I read for like 3 weeks before I attempted anything on my phone so that when I did I felt comfortable with what I'd be doing. Oh Yeah! I hear you loud and clear NOW. I slowed my roll WAY down... Thanks for the advice and help.

To add to unclespoon's great advice here, one thing to note that might help:
If the power cord is plugged in to the phone, and it's powered off, you'll see the orange light in the top right corner of the screen to denote charging.
If you press the power button, the light goes out, but after a minute comes back on. The phone remains powered off.
If you press the power button, the light goes out, and then you press the power button again before the light comes back on, the phone will power up.
This only applies to having the phone powered off and plugged in, doesn't matter if it's powered off and not plugged in.
This is on CWM 4.0.0.9, can't remember if it's that way for 4.0.0.8 or not - but you should upgrade to 4.0.0.9 as soon as you can if you haven't already.

I am having a great deal of trouble upgrading to Modaco 4.0.0.9... I really dont know what I am doing wrong either. Is there a STEP by STEP guide a child could follow. Apparently I suck at this.... I've havebeen reading all day after messing up and I've downloaded so many different programs and drivers and all kinds of other misc things I cant count anymore.... In HBOOT it says S-Off and SUperOneClick says it's already been rooted and I can download Root Apps. For all intensive purposes, it's been rooted BUT Root Check (the app) says it isnt rooted properly and I cant gain admin rights using the Terminal Emulator or ADB from my computer. I can push files and reboot but I can not use "su" to "shell" works but not "su"... I could pull my hair out! What am I doing wrong?

Okay when you type "su" in terminal. What is it saying?
And you can't open any rooted programs?
Try flashing one of the roms. Or reinstall using a different root method.
The roms are already rooted and you have modaco recovery. Check this thread out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1320002

When I type in "su" it says: reloc_library[1312]: 1688 cannot locate '_ZNK7android6Parcel15SetDataPositionEj'... CANNOT LINK EXECUTABLE
and I CAN open rooted programs... it's weird... I can download, install and USE rooted programs...
I just tried to flash Modaco 4.0.0.9 but I dont think I have the IMG file located properly on my SD card... Can you assist with this? It would be greatly appreciated.

I've got MODACO hahaha... I'm getting this crap figured out slowly but surely. I appreciate all the input and advice... QUESTION THOUGH: I used Fr3vo for a temp-root and wrote modaco to my reovery partition I guess... When I reboot will my root still be in effect or will I have to do it again? If so, whats a good reliable permanent root?

Thank You Sir. I'm proud to say I figured it out myself, through a lot of deductive thinking and reasoning, and managed to get everything squared away when it comes to ROOTING. I got bored and "flashed" the Senseless ROM to make things more exciting. Its fun when you start to figure things out. I appreciate all the help from everyone and the existing information that has been shared. It's been a great help.

I haven't done this method yet. I'm hoping a more experienced member can chime in.
I flashed my superuser from recovery using the download found here. http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary. (Look under does revolutionary give me root download that zip)
Don't unzip. Put whole file into main sd card directory
Boot to recovery
Installed root package by click install zip from sd card
Reboot
I. Haven't done any temp roots. And you can try this just make a nandroid first (backup in recovery). That way if something goes wrong easy fix

I'm glad you figured it out. I work in the it field most problems are solved by figuring out the root problem which can take time.
As in many problems here. Two people can have similar problem, but very different solutions

You are right as right can be there... Similar Problems can have very different solutions hahaha... Speaking of problems:
I am trying to connect my phone to the T-Mobile HSPA. A friend told me I need to find my MSL number (code for my EPSD?) I can't find any guides to accomplishing this with a MT4GS. And when I searched EPSD on XDA it came back with source code forums. So naturally I downloaded the source code anyways hahahaha... I'm download happy.... but anyways, am I on the right track? What do I do? Are you familiar with this stuff? Thanks.

[Q] How to remove rooting AND custom ROM

Hi, I'm sorry to ask this question as I'm sure it's one that "floods" your boards more often than most but I have not found a decent answer yet in the several topics I've browsed. Basically, like the topic says, I want my phone back the way it was before I rooted it and before I installed the custom ROM of Jelly Bean. I want it to go back to before like it was, so I can start receiving OTA updates again and get the "official" Jelly Bean update from Verizon. I don't want to do the whole "unlock your boot loader" thing anymore. I want my phone to be able to boot up the right way and NOT have Verizon try to brick my phone.
The main problems with these other topics I've browsed are 1: I don't want my phone to be "restored to the point that I could take it back into Verizon" because A: I don't need to take it back to Verizon and B: I still need all of my phone data. I don't want to lose my pictures, contacts, etc. Also, 2: because all of these other topic speak in gibberish to me. Everyone who responds to other people asking this question speak all technical and say it as if the topic creator has done this 1000 times. I need a step-by-step response PLEASE on exactly what I need to do. Saying "oh yeah use odin" tells me NOTHING. I need to know EVERY step to do this, I don't even know wth odin is.
Also, last question, I am backing my phone up by hooking it up to the computer via USB and dragging each folder and everything into a folder on my computer as a backup. That being said, since I want to UNDO my root and custom ROM and everything, are there any files I should NOT copy to my computer that might mess this up or make my phone think it's still rooted or anything?
If someone could PLEASE help me with a detailed guide on how to do this I would GREATLY appreciate it. Thank you!

Ok, so basically, you just want to unroot your phone? Go into super user and there is an option to unroot your phone OR, use any file explorer like ES explore, root explore and navigate to this directory /system/xbin and delete su file.
May I ask, what you about to do is really a big waist of time, it doesn't help you anyway in installing custom rom or make your phone run better!! what is the reason for this??

1st: I bolded the part in your statement that I was talking about in my first post. I appreciate the help a lot, so no offense, but I have no idea what that sentence even meant.. Will you please speak more clearly, and, to be honest, dumb it down a lot for me. I seriously know nothing about this stuff.
2nd: I don't want help installing custom ROMs. I want to go back to the way my phone was BEFORE having to use any custom ROMs. In other words, I don't even want Jelly Bean on my phone the way it is anymore. I want Ice Cream Sandwich back (I'm pretty sure that was the last one, right? Lol) so that from THERE I can update using VERIZON's Jelly Bean update.
The reason is that I've had problems with my phone that I NEVER had before rooting/downloading this custom "nightly" ROM. The main problem, I can not play ANY games on my phone without it crashing minutes in. I have a Galaxy S3, for crying out loud, so the games obviously aren't too much for the phone itself to handle. I think the nightly ROM I downloaded was just a bit buggy.
Another main reason I want to is because I miss all of the developer options my phone had before, i.e screenshots by swiping hand over screen, Kies Air, etc.

Also, last question, I am backing my phone up by hooking it up to the computer via USB and dragging each folder and everything into a folder on my computer as a backup. That being said, since I want to UNDO my root and custom ROM and everything, are there any files I should NOT copy to my computer that might mess this up or make my phone think it's still rooted or anything?
If someone could PLEASE help me with a detailed guide on how to do this I would GREATLY appreciate it. Thank you!

Unfortunately if you want to go back to stock ICS (before the updates and everything) without root or unlocked boot loader you are going to lose all your phone data. That's the price you pay for rooting. But you are doing the right thing by copying all the files you want to your computer, I assume you're copying your internal SD card. The best you could do for apps is to use titanium backup and backup your apps, and SMS.
Then follow this guide to go back to ICS

If you can't do this guide or don't understand it then I agree with the previous poster and get whoever rooted your phone top undo it.
Now that you are back on ICS reroot using the steps in the same guide I just linked download titanium backup and restore your apps and sms.
You can then select the option in the supersu app to full unroot.

I did it myself, eventually, but it was just as hard. So let me get this straight, you're saying that I need to follow that guide (I'm assuming the part that says how to Odin back from ROM etc), then I need to reroot in order for titanium backup to work so that I can restore everything, THEN unroot again? When you say reroot, will following that guide cause me to become unrooted already? Thx.

You should follow section 5 if that guide to return your phone to sick ICS. It will be just like you got it from Verizon. This means no root and your internal SD wiped.
Then you will want to root that to restore your titanium backup that you've already made. Again that guide will show you how.

lol ok I'll do that. And last Qs (I think lol) unrooting again is just as fast as clicking unroot in superuser? and then last but not least once I do will I be able to update OTA to jelly bean again? Cuz I still want JB I just want official JB. If worst comes to worst I just use that Kies Air program? Thanks

Yes full unroot from app will unroot you. Or just delete the app and take the ota

I'm really sorry to do this but.. Lol. This honestly should be my last Q. The rest seems quite clear to me but is the part of that guide under section 5 titled "*Flashing a Stock Radio with Odin or a Custom Recovery" applicable to what I'm trying to do as well? It's kind of offset like it's something optional/different but do I need to do that also to take my phone back today? Thanks.

My Infuse (ATT) has been freezing up and acting stupid for a very long time, so I figured a factory reset would fix it. Then I learned about rooting, which I plan to do. I don't know how long the warranty is, but I am sure it is over. Then I read about some backup program that remembers all your settings, so I like the sound of that. But if I'm resetting due to a jacked up fone, do I want to back it up? Should I just go for the reset, root it, set up everything like I want it, then back it up?
Should I root first, then do the reset? Should I root it, then reset it? If I wanna add a ROM later, should I back it up first and add the ROM last? I have insurance on the fone with ATT, will this negate the need for insurance? I mean, if it's rooted will my insurance be void as well?
Gonna do it tomorrow, I have the Kias mini and the superoneclick and a PC.

What I recommend is to follow beanstalk ROM.
There is instruction from gingerbread.
If your phone is passing hard, then you might want to format your internal SD card. Sync with your Google account so it can back up contracts and apps.

To answer some of your other questions, the backup program I think you're talking about is called Titanium Backup(you need root to use though), I would recommend following the tutorial in the link I posted. If you root your phone; yes it will void your warranty but if you ever need to take your phone back you can reset something that's called a flash counter that will make your rooting it untraceable. If you still don't understand then let me know and I'll try to help you out further...

Thanks, that link looks like instructions to add a new ROM, which I will probably do after I get this fone sorted. Since I can't update to Gingerbread and then root with superoneclick, that sounds better anyway.
What I really need to know is if it makes a difference if I root right now, then hard reset my fone. The hard reset is necessary because my fone is constantly freezing up, I assume because I loaded too much crap onto it over the year. My biggest problem is that if I turn on GPS and then set an address in Navigator, it will lock up guaranteed. It usually works after a reboot, but that is every time and it's about a 10 minute process just to get directions.
So do I reset the fone right now, then root it or can I root it first, then reset it, or does it matter?
Edit: I see superoneclick supports GB now.
