soft bricked with broken power button - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Nexus S has a problem:
It has a broken power button, and it goes to boot animation for a moment and then returned back to google logo endlessly. I can't flash anything since when it goes to bootloader, the options can't be changed.
Any help is really acceptable. thanks

Had this problem on two Nexus S models now. Guess it's really a thing with this phone. I just solved it by buying a new button and soldering it in.
I had to buy 10 buttons though. Aliexpress has a pack for under $6.

Broken power button and bootloop is none of the major problems . Just do 1 thing use a USB Jigg. Turn off your device and insERT a USB Jigg , it will straight away move to "Download Mode" . Then flash it normally as we do, and for broken power button just get an original piece and solder it to board. I can give you the power and volume buttons even if you want the mainboard of Nexus S i can provide.
Hit thanks Button :thumbup ::thumbup :

Hardware problem?

I bought an used infuse the other day to fix and sell to a friend. The owner said it was bricked, but I've since gotten it into recovery mode, download mode, and a normal power on. It goes into a bootloop most of the time though, the endless bootloop people seem to be getting when the power button gets stuck.
I've completely disassembled the phone and I can't find the problem. The power button (the white one on the inside) moves completely freely. I've tried booting up the phone with the back housing off so the power button is bare but it still bootlooped. The only way I can get it to boot up is to repeatedly hit the back of the phone onto my hand as its booting up. Even then, the phone will only stay on for 30 seconds or so once it boots. I've read of people fixing this by simply throwing the phone on the ground, but is there a better way to fix this? What could be the problem?
Edit: I think I may try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2235435&highlight=bootloop
It could be a weak connection on the mobo somewhere.
Edit 2: Yep! I re-soldered the connection around the power button on the back of the motherboard and the phone is working. Got it reset and now I'm running it without the second power button thing in the case.

power button replacement

hello everybody!
I have a broken power button on my nexus s and I have now remapped my buttons with the power on the volume+. It's not a great problem to have the phone configured like this, but I won't that my volume button turns broke with the intense use.
Have anyone replaced his power button? Does it need to be soldered or it need to be simply joined to the mother board?
Thank you :good:
Noone?
I took mine apart because it broke "open" so t was not possible to power on the device at all (until I messed around and found a way)
So there's 5 solder pads, 3 at the back 2 at the front. The middle pad on the back is connected to one of the outer pads, and the other outer pad is shorted to those 2 other pads when you press the button, The 2 front pads are used to hold down the switch.
Anyways, I got it out with a soldering iron but the 1 important pad got damaged.
The way I figured out to power it on was to install kies with the drivers option (just installing the samsung drivers was not enough), then get odin 1.83, this tool and CWM touch img file from the cwm website (converted to tar with that tool).
Then I turned on the phone in download mode (hold the 2 volume buttons and insert the usb cable), flashed the CWM touch tar file with odin 1.83 with the reset option on and the phone booted on into android. It's a pain but it works.
I found power buttons online for like 10$ but honestly it seems like a PITA to replace. I use button savior and if my phone dies it usually turns back on when I Plug in the charger or pop the battery in and out.

This guy works fine:
http://www.ebay.es/itm/321237784539?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649
It's an half dolar on a local electronics store here (Turkey). And every samsung tackle button works with Nexus S.
You don't need to spend for that button much.
I also replaced my nexus S power button. Soldered by myself. Not so hard if you have some experience with soldering...
Mine costs about $12 for replacement, service included. Actually they took an old volume rocker thingy from a beat up samsung phone, and soldered it on mine. Been doing fine for 12 months now. I installed screen off and lock so I won't stress it too much again. Use volume rocker wake if it's included on the current ROM that you are using.. Again so that you won't beat up the little guy once you have it fixed.

[Q] Did my N5 just turn into a paper weight?

There isn't much in the way of details for what just happened to my phone but I'll try my best to be as detailed as possible.
I picked it up and turned the screen on then I hear a "pop" sound. (i don't know if it was a hardware pop or something that came from the speaker)
The screen grayed out a little bit, the system buttons on the bottom of the screen disappeared and horizontal lines appeared on the bottom quarter of the screen. The screen was also completely unresponsive.
I held down the power button to restart the phone, when I did it vibrated and the screen turned off. However, the phone won't turn back on now. Plugging the phone into the wall doesn't make the charging icon appear so I'm assuming that my phone just died.
The phone was bootloader unlocked, rooted, and had Franco kernal r14 on it. No overclocking, under-clocking, or under-volting.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what I could try to either bring it back to life or confirm that it is indeed dead?
Hold both volume buttons and the power button and see if it will go into the bootloader.

Power button doesn't work. Volume Up + Power button doesn't work. VolUp/ VolDown + Power button doesn't work.

Try leaving it plugged In for awhile even though it doesn't appear to be charging. You could try to hold town the power button for thirty seconds.
It seems like it COULD be bricked. If it is, I would contract Google for a RMA. Their not going to spend there time fixing it just to see if you were rooted or unlocked.
Good luck.

I kinda figured since it's bricked they wouldn't be able to tell. I'll try leaving it on the charger overnight and see what happens. Thanks for your input.
It's doa. Rma it.

[Q] Did my nexus 5 got hard bricked?

Hey guys, so.. I may think that my nexus 5 is hard bricked.
It all started when my phone was having the infamous " power button " issues, the power button just got ****ed so I replaced it with a new one at some apparently ****ty lab.
It worked, but again started to show signs of malfunctions after 2 weeks or so, when I pressed the power button most of the times my phone didn't go into sleep mode it was like I never even pressed the damn button, but I got a long with it because usually on the second try the the button functioned properly.
But now.. oh boy, a few days ago my phone began to restart by itself and then I knew that my power button is completely ****ed again, and on top of that my screen got ****ed.. apparently the leds on my lcd got burned or something so the screen is like " stuck " at low brightness all the time ( tried everything, deff not a software issue. ).
So.. today, I went to replace my screen. the lab guy told me that the previous lab apparently did a really ****ty job on my nexus and as soon as he unplugged the motherboard to replace the screen the damn power button fell of as it wasn't even welded properly to the motherboard.. so he tried to fix it for a lot of time but with no luck.. and when he gave me my phone back, well.. everything went to ****.
Yes, he replaced the screen. but now, the phone WILL NOT BOOT. it's like the power button is pressing itself whenever I try to power up my phone so I can't even make it to the lolipop animation most of the time, and when I do get lucky and I get to the animation the phone just restarts again. Strange thing is that if the power button were to press itself all the time well the phone is suppose to try and turn on all the time right? wrong, only when I try to turn it on ( if I actually get that lucky because most of the times that i'm trying to turn it on nothing happens ) ONLY THEN it restarts, I can't use the bootloader because the phone just keeps restarting.
I don't know if this is a real power button issue, or if my phone got hard bricked.
any thoughts?
P.S: when I plug my nexus into a wall charger then it just keeps loop booting to the " google " screen until I unplug it.
Um this isn't a hard brick, they broke your phone...

The power button needs to be properly soldered on,
The phone is stuck in that cycle due to the failed soldering job,so the power button is pressed/on constantly
I don't get why the screen would get faulty.
If you don't have good repair places around you will need to buy a new phone.

Boot loop after rooting MMB29V. Please help.

I was running the latest stock image (MMB29V) since yesterday on my Nexus 5 and today I used the Nexus root toolkit as always to root the device. Well TWRP flashed once and it said it copied the root files to the device. I had it in my pocket for a few minutes and after that it went into a crazy constant boot loop. It will stop eventually but if I keep the charging cable in it won't stop. I cannot get into recovery because I get the "Start" screen but I cannot advance because it reboots too quickly. I have found a few you tube videos where people push the power button like they are playing the old school game "Track and Field" but this does not work for me nor do I think it's a power button issue. I think I stupidly might have hit some kind of button combo while I'm my pocket believe it or not. I pulled the cover off and was hoping to pull the battery but Im not a fan of doing that since its not a simple task. Any help appreciated. This phone is dead to me and that is NOT good. I need to get this working.
TIA
Bill
Will the phone stay in fastboot mode or does it quickly restart?
Possible power button problem?

It quickly restarts. I want to say its not a problem with the power button because it has been fine for a few years now w/out issue and only happened after rooting earlier today. Right now the only way I can even get the phone to turn on is the plug the charging cable in and then the restarting commences. Does it sound like a power button issue? Possibly but its hard to believe, I dunno. Waiting on a call back from Google tech support to see if they are any help.
It could be a power button issue. You'll have to remove the motherboard to find out.
Once removed from the housing, quickly press and release the power button several times in a row using more pressure than normal. While the motherboard is out of the phone, clean around the power button with pure alcohol.

Is there a write up on that here somewhere? Guess I will have to search around for it.

Did NOT want to screw up my phone so I sent it to LG. Took a few weeks but it cost me 78.00 total for them to repair the power button issue. Whatever they replaced also fixed the low volume issue I was experiencing as well so it worked out.
