Please forgive the late-night rant...
I hate that customizations like Sense UI are manufacturer-exclusive, and I hate that you can't uninstall them completely without rooting and flashing a new ROM. I hate that HTC's widgets are locked to the Sense UI launcher so that you can't use them with alternative launchers like LauncherPro--or other hardware without Sense UI like the Droid X. I hate that I can't choose the Droid X's not-quite-ninjablur red-and-white-on-black UI skin and combine it with HTC's widgets and Google's vanilla settings and app icons. I hate that HTC changed the app and settings icons in the first place.
Ultimately, I hate that manufacturers are using artificial limitations in software to sell hardware instead of providing better hardware. It's a strategy straight out of Apple's playbook. Why can't HTC Sense widgets work on other launchers? Would it really be that impossible for HTC to make the widgets downloadable to any Android device? Free for HTC owners, $1.99 for everyone else! You'd make money, and it'd be so much easier for people to upgrade to the latest version of the OS!
I also hate these artificial carrier-exclusive handset deals that keep phones like the EVO locked to Sprint and the Incredible locked to Verizon and the Nexus One locked to either AT&T or T-Mobile and the iPhone 4 relegated to AT&T. Why can't these phones come unlocked and with all the necessary radio equipment to work on all of the networks? Then the consumer could pick the hardware he wants, then the network, and have a totally customized experience. Have the phones automatically disable the extra radio bands if they're not using them--it wouldn't be that hard to conserve battery!
And why isn't there a version of the Nexus One car dock for the Incredible? Or the Droid X? You know, a doc that has integrated charging and the like. All you have are these ghetto mounts that require you to string USB charging cables all over the place.
And finally, I hate that no Android hardware manufacturer is making a phone built like iPhone 4. **** Apple's iOS--I want nothing to do with that. But, aside from the antenna, the hardware packed into an iPhone 4 is impressive, like that Retina display in particular. There's no goddamned good reason I shouldn't be able to buy a version of that hardware that runs Android and works on Verizon.
In fact, I hate that the screens in smartphones aren't modular. It'd be so much better if I could switch out my Incredible's annoying PenTile matrix screen for a super-dense S-IPS Retina display. Why can't I do this?
And why aren't phones rooted out of the box? Are casual users even going to notice?
Sorry, I'm just really pissed off about all this bull****. I still love Android.
I'm with you.
I'd like to have a SenseUI-Android and a multi-touch display for my HTC TouchPro2 (Tilt2)

Thanks. I'd love to be able to build my own phone to run Android. Internally it'd be like a Droid X but smaller with a Retina display with the vanilla Android icons, Motorola's hot red-on-black theme, and Sense UI widgets.
The Retina display is not better than say a Super AMOLED.
the only thing is the high resolution, but Android devices have high resolution too.
Apart from that I do not see anything in the hardware of the 4th that is appealing.
I 2nd (3rd... or... support) this rant.
Regarding the software part, stupid htc sense dependencies and such. Is it not possible for devs/community to replicate the functionality of most htc apps? From what i've seen there are some very talented "chefs" on xda and the interwebs.
My ideal (hero) rom would be a stable, fast, no-crap, release with the phone functionality/longevity in focus (and an alarm clock that does not forget to actually use sound/vibration. A flashing screen just doesn't cut it a 06 in the morning).
Try designing a phone sometime, all your questions will be answered.
Well, it might be a little hard to just start designing a phone, but you could learn about the processes and technology involved in both the design and manufacture of such devices.

The Retina display is special because of its high resolution and high pixel density--and the pixel density is the key part. Is there any other Android phone with a resolution as high, or a screen with as great a pixel density?

Care to back this up?
Well, I got an invite last week and ended up buying a One+ but now that I have it in my hand and I saw the screen and compared it to my Nexus 5 on FULL Brightness, the screen on the One+ looks grainy. Like there is a micro layer of dust on the screen making it uncrisp and unsharp. Its no as bright and Vibrant as the Nexus 5 is. Is this a hardware issue? It always looks like there is dust on it when its perfectly clear...
Anyone having this issue with the device as well? What are the possible solutions for this? I did contact the CS so lets see what they say...
Nexus5 has Full-HD on a 5" screen, pushing it to 445dpi while Oneplus has the same resolution on a 5.5" screen resulting in 401dpi.
Especially close-up you will see that your OPO's screen looks less "real" and more computer-screenish. Comparing it to other phones (including my GS3) makes it look very beautiful so it's rather relative.
I do hope that is the cause of your issue and not a real physical layer of dust.
Is it just me or the screen is grainy when in low light and in darker images?
same here, very disappointed in this camera
Yes , it's like a very thin layer of dust or paper is on the screen .

I think this is common with OLED, I've only seen a handful of them though...check out another OLED device or TV in store & check for it.

Is it a common problem or common in all oled? If it's a problem I'm going to return the phone. It's noticeable when you watch videos without light and lowest brightness.
Its common with this phone, not with oled in general.
If its just grainy then you are in luck, mine has clear vertical and horizontal lines.
I believe its called mura with oled technology.
My galaxy nexus a few years back had it way worse and i traded that in after 2 days at the store for a galaxy s3.
My galaxy s3 had perfect screen (to this day it is still perfect except for the cracks in the screen)
Trying to sell my g flex 2 as i have a taiwanese imported phone (h959 red 32gb) in europe and LG webcare refuses to help me with it (and sending it back to vendor will cost me tons of transport and import again ...).
Also LG webcare stated it was normal and even a screen replacement wouldn't fix much. So i was kind of bitter and told them they where 4 years behind on samsung in oled technology if this is normal.
Anyway, good luck with it.

I'm not noticing any major grainy areas, at least it's less noticeable than on my Galaxy S1 & Vita. I unfortunately got one with yellowing along the bottom edge, but I can only see it on light colors.
Also the Mura effect consists of black blotches on black areas, those lines you have are something else.
Sent from my LG-H950
Mura is cloudy effects on the screen, eg yellow spots.
Banding is lines.
I got both and LG refuses to fix it.
POLED

Yes, true, it is common with this phone and not with OLED technology in general. Now, what else you need to note is that this phone uses POLED type of display. POLED differs with regular AMOLED and OLED display technology in the plastic substrate that employs as opposed to the glass substrate in regular AMOLED/OLED displays, hence the letter "P" in POLED. Plastic is used to make the display bendable and this POLED technology by LG is not perfected yet. I do not know if Samsung uses POLED for S6 Edge, S6 Edge Plus and Note Edge, if they indeed use plastic substrate in their curved displays, then your claim that LG is behind in this tech. is true. I think i've read somewhere that Samsung uses normal display tech in their curved mobile displays, but i cannot remember what website hosted this article.
I own LG 55EC9300 OLED TV and i can tell you that LG's regular OLED tech. is as good as Samsung's. This is not straightforward correlation with mobile display tech. since i do not know of any OLED based phone of LG. My opinion is that LG's normal OLED tech. is just fine, just that they need to polish this POLED tech.
Mine's screen is ok on minimal brightness, however it is too bright on minimal and use Twilight. And than the screen is really grainy. But there is no way around it, 0% brightness is too much at night. I hate that. And there is too much white GUI. We need more BLACKS.

Coming from G2 to G Flex 2 I really noticed non-uniform solid colors on G Flex 2 and I found two solutions: raise average brightness (grain is much more noticeable on lower brightness setting) and get used to it. Really, second option helped me a lot, my eyes got used to this screen within a week and now I don't notice it and happy with overall screen quality. I understand that second solution is not for everyone.

yeah same here, i hardly notice it anymore. also coming from a nexus 5, the flex 2 screen is way way superior

i agree. i use the app darker now. in lowest setting it's usable. but more black in GUI would bee better
Ok, I know that RealmeUI has some kind of Always On Display but it is only enabled for devices with amoled panels. Is there any way to get something like that on the NON Amoled ones??? Like Moto Display??
So this is probably the worst display I have seen in a phone in years.
Little back story here. Right now I have 2 phones, one is up for sale on Swappa (OnePlus 9 Pro) which is a long story on why I'm selling it, and my temporary daily driver is a Motorola Power 2021. I got Moto because the 9Pro was unusable at the time and I needed something quick and cheap to hold me over until I figured out a long-term solution. Yea, 1st world issues here. lol
Well, once I fired up the Moto Power, I absolutely loved it but it just wasn't powerful enough and I knew I needed a bit more memory and a slightly faster CPU. So when the Edge was announced, I thought, well hell, I'll sell the 9Pro and grab an Edge. This would leave my Power as a backup to me and my family.
Anyway, I unboxed the Edge, powered it one and began the setup. About 30 seconds into the setup I realized the display is worse than the $200 Power. Heh. Screw this I'm returning the phone.
So what's wrong with the display? First of all the off-axis is horrid. Anything over 20 degrees, it dims out and the colors shift. On-axis, I see nothing but a halo effect that was the norm of LCD displays from 2010, like the OG droid, which gave me a headache.
I really wanted to like this phone, and I think I would have if it wasn't for the display. I didn't get a chance to mess with it before purchase, so there is that. I wouldn't have bought it if I had hands-on with it first.
So not sure where I'm going from here. I guess unlist my 9pro and deal with it's issues until they fix their crappy firmware or maybe a Pixel 5a, but I'm old and need a larger display. Maybe another Moto like the the G Stylus or the Edge 2020. I just know I will be window shopping next time.
I just wanted to share my experience. I hope everyone enjoys this device, it's just not for me.
Cheers!
Thanks for your input. That's what was worrying me, was the display. I think I'll look else where.
If anyone has any specific questions regarding the display, or anything where it doesn't require inserting a SIM, let me know. I'm still waiting to get confirmation from Motorola about returning the device, so I have time to do testing for those who are curious.
I have one question for anyone out there that can answer, as I'm not very knowledgeable on display technologies that aren't AMOLED...
The comparison chart on Motorola's website show the following for display technologies:
Motorola Edge (2021) - LCD, 8-bit, 144Hz refresh rate, Up to 576Hz touch latency
The Cheap Moto G Power (2021) - Simply says: IPS
and then the two phones I'm interested in, the Stylus and the One 5G Ace both indicate LTPS displays.
Okay so I know that the LCD display the Edge has; my eyes are not fond of.
The Moto G Power has IPS, I feel is quite nice. It's not AMOLED, and when turned sideways while wearing polarized glasses, of course turns the display black.
What's up with LTPS??! I've never heard of this technology before. Is this better or worse than LCD and or IPS?
Thanks!
Liking mine
Screen is IPS and the viewing angle is like One Ace
144Hz rate doesn't have much benefit due to LCD/IPS response time
Set to automatic is the best bet

LTPS is Low-Temperature PolySilicon. A substrate the LCD is manufactured onto. It is still an IPS LCD screen, just manufactured using a different process that also has the benefit of making it easier to create LCDs with a higher pixel density. It also improves the display's power consumption over older IPS LCDs.
The screen on my Edge 2021 is just like the screen on my previous phones that use IPS LCDs, be it LTPS or not. If the Edge screen bothers you but other IPS LCD displays do not, then I think it's your device that is the problem and not the technology itself.
I'm extremely flicker sensitive and avoid using AMOLED screens. The Edge's screen is nice for me to look at.
