The One A9 is my first unlocked, non subsidised phone. I put my AT&T sim in it and have been cruising along nicely.
Today I received my first voicemail and realized that I have no visual voicemail app. My previous AT&T branded One M8 used the carrier's app, of course.
So, what do you use? What works? Thanks!

Google Voice or install the AT&T VVM app (you might need root to get that to work though).
Great, thanks jollywhitefoot for attaching the .apk! I haven't rooted, but I'll give it a try and report back for the record. I've never looked into Google Voice, but I guess now's the time.
Update : Yep, it looks like it needs root; wouldn't install. Anyone have links to good tutorials on Google Voice?

Setting up GV can be frustrating. Ive always just muddled my way through it.
Are you unlocked? You could probably get ATT VVm working if you can copy it to system/app in TWRP
Not unlocked on the One A9 yet. I'm assuming it's the same process going through the HTC dev site like I did for the One M8. I'm willing to try it.

yep. same process.
GV is good. and once it's set up, you might like it better than ATTVVM. It's just kind of a pain to setup. My favorite part of GV over ATTVVM is that GV transcribes voicemail messages so you don't even have to listen to them if you don't want to.
Go for Google Voice... the setup doesn't take too long... Give it a go!

Don't bother unlocking just to install the AT&T vvm file in the op. I couldn't get it to install from twrp either.
If others are following this thread, I can confirm the AT&T voicemail app available on Google Play (Play Store link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.att.mobile.android.vvm ) installs and works well on my US unlocked One A9!
I have also been looking into Google Voice as suggested.
Question to Google Voice users: Have any of you used your mobile number for GV? In all the setup tutorials I've read and watched, it seems they recommend getting a new GV number. I understand the logic for this for some scenarios. However, if one wanted to use GV as a visual voicemail replacement (and not use a carrier’s VVM app) wouldn't you need to use your mobile number as your GV number? If one did use your "legacy" mobile number, can you go backwards and delete the GV "relationship" at a later time? Or is it a one-way transaction?

Pretty sure unlocking isn't enough. I haven't owned an HTC since my MyTouch4G and Amaze 4g, but with nexus devices, u need to be unlocked and rooted to access /system partition

I got a GV number and it works just like a carrier supplied VM number (like in call settings the Voicemail number just changes from your carrier number to your new GV number). I don't know about porting your existing number to GV. Google used to charge $10 to do that, but it looks like they don't do that anymore.

In TWRP you just mount system and use the file manager to copy the apk in the system/app folder.

I have used my own number on GV. The setup is mostly straightforward except for the step where you make ATT re-direct the missed/busy calls to the voicemail. The steps mentioned by Google didn't work for me. Neither did talking with ATT customer service.
And then I figured that all I needed to do was enter the voicemail number provided during the Google voice setup at this place Dialer > Settings > Call forwarding > Enter it in the three (Foward when xxxx) options.

I have used GV for years but have been unable to set my VM to forward to it on my new A9. Perhaps due to Marshmallow, but you'd think Google would update its apps before the release. Thanks for the suggestion with forwarding. Just set that up at least until I can get the VM option to work.

Hey guys,
Forgive me I am new to the Verizon family as I just came from the Evo on Sprint.
Is there no way to get visual voicemail for free on Verizon? It never even crossed my mind that this would not be possible. I honestly don't know though if my visual voicemail on Sprint was standard or the result of my rooted rom on the Evo.
Anyone?
Thanks!
If you have a Google Voice account, you can use that as your phone's voicemail provider, giving you visual voicemail.

I do have an account, shortly before I switched I "integrated" GV with my Evo and boy was that slick. I'll search for a guide on how to do it the normal way.
Just download the GV app to your phone and it should walk you through the process.

You'll probably need a new (separate) GV number, though, now that you've ported the original.

Nope I didn't. Worked great.
I actually prefer YouMail. Since I discovered it several years ago, in my WM days, the functionality offered by it has caused me to immediately disregard all carrier VM options. As a matter of fact, my VZW VM isn't even setup, ~2 years after switching from AT&T.
I had originally SM-G955U and i wanted to get rid of the verizon bloatware so i flashed SM-G955U1
all is working fine except the voicemail notifications. I am not getting any notifications of having voicemails. I called my phone number using a different number and left a voicemail.
I am not getting anything.
Does anybody know how i can fix this to get notifications of voicemails? I wouldnt like to be calling my voicemail to check if i have any messages.

How's it going man. Most people install Google voice and setup their verizon number to forward to Google voice voicemail. With the unlocked firmware, you lose the visual voicemail app from verizon, and that's the only hiccup for me. I use Google voice, it has the voicemail to text option for free unlike Verizon's offerings. Good luck, let us know if you get it working or need help.

Am I wrong for believing there is a Samsung version of visual voicemail that can be used on the unlocked phones?
I would like to give it a spin but cannot find it.
use T-Moible voicemail if you're using on T-Mobile Network, or use YouMail app or Google Voice if you have one.

That was one of the problems I ran into using an unlocked phone on Verizon network a couple of years ago. Also, I was not able to get notifications for text, etc. After that, I swore off unlocked phones. But things may have changed since then, or you may find a work around. Good luck.

I just uninstalled TVV and will look to give YouMail a try.
However my question still remains, am I wrong to assume that there is a Samsung Visual Voicemail app that can be used. I swear I read something about how people hated the Tmobile version because they make you pay to transcribe the voicemail to text but the Samsung version did not.
Yes it has the Samsung one installed. It comes up as voicemail in the finder...it's not baked in to the dialer though which is super annoying.
If you want the at&t visual voicemail or other branded version the apk is out there and I can confirm does work on our phone the same issue is still present though regarding the missing icon from the dialer...
Xda hates my phone at the moment so I can't upload a picture but the image for the Samsung one looks just like the voicemail notification symbol.

It's available from the galaxy app store according to the app info. I definitely didn't download it and it wasn't on my last device.
was there ever a solution to this? on s20 G9880 and G9810 no visual voicemail apk, using on t-mo and att respectively
If there's a better place to post this let me know.
My brother recently got a new phone, the one plus 8. He also has a still working fine pixel 4. He wants to be able to get calls and texts on both, from texting or calling the same number. We are in Canada and tried using Google voice. But cant seem to get it working how he wants.

I dont see why it wouldn't be. It's basically call forwarding but he wants the calls to come to both phones. So he can have a work and home phone without having to change anything.
There are carriers that allow this like T-MOBILE with their digits app. I have a second line and basically I can use that line any device I want and as long as it's logged in it will ring on multiple devices at the same time. Also this isn't any different than an esim for a watch. Same concept.

If you set up the T-Mobile VVM app then delete the app, the dialer will then enable it's built-in VVM.

Nope. That unfortunately never works on phones (at least OnePlus phones) that don't already come preloaded with Google's dialer, unless you root, run the Google dialer framework, etc. to get it enabled.

As someone who buys from oneplus year after year and also uses t-mobile as a carrier, it's worth noting that international variants on t-mobile, never have working visual voicemail no matter the dialer app. 7t and 8t both say it's not working. Oneplus can't figure out the issue and t-mobile doesn't want to. My international 8t has Google apps by default instead of oneplus apps, ie dialer, messages. Doesn't work any way. Even on my custom roms I build it doesn't work. I have even popped a vzw sim in my other sim slot and it has visual voicemail in the dialer then, just not with t-mobile. Further decompiled apps show me the carrier is trying to provision the oneplus devices as their variants, not international. Explained to oneplus and they do not understand. They think I'm saying my t-mobile phone won't work(vvm). I'm like noooooooo it's OnePlus international variants on T-MOBILE!! So welcome to the lost cause.

Correct
Ditch T-Mobiles crappy visual voicemail and just download youmail from the play store. It's more fun and has way more features including individual caller voicemails and scam blockers to use on top of scamshield
My fave is the 5 min long ringing tone so I don't get said voicemails from anyone

I've gotten it to work before, I just have to have root. Download the magisk props module, change your device to a pixel or OnePlus tmo variant, force stop the Google play store and clear storage. Use the dialer framework module, reboot and install dialer or use stock one.
I have several oneplus phones and VV in the stock dialer is spurious at best. But it will work sometimes! Make sure the tmo VV is uninstalled or disabled using Island in God Mode. Then just keep trying. I can verify it's working for me at the moment! I'm not rooted.

TMO VVM breaks the built in one. To get it back you have to uninstall or freeze (using island in god mode) the tmo vvm app. Then clear the storage and cache of the builtin phone app and turn back on vvm in the built in phone app settings
