Interesting storage situation; the mysterious "other" category - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Here's an interesting scenario/observation. It's annoying. I have no idea what it means. And, I would welcome anyone who can explain it to me. (TIA)
My M8, rooted, S-OFF, stock - was behaving very badly. Boot times were glacial. There were random hangs, and programs closing (mostly gapps stuff) at odd times, even during background tasks. I couldn't update programs in a way that would survive a reboot. Sometimes I wouldn't be allowed to update at all. I checked my memory, and WOW! there was 22Gb in "other". I tried everything short of wiping to free memory. But, I didn't really have much that wasn't going to the ext_sd anyway. I deleted and reinstalled messages+. I deleted and reinstalled email (use 3rd party, not gmail or stock app). I don't use other social media, or blinkfeed. I deleted what little lost.dir was around.
I finally gave up. I ran TB and backed up all of my files, SMS/MMS, and data. I made a nandroid backup with TWRP. I tried several different wipe combos and finally just settled on the factory wipe default, because it didn't make a difference.
I opened TB and put all of my progs back, imported my SMS/MMS, and reset my contacts. My email started back up and looks to be identical to where I left off. Now, my "other" memory is hovering at 12Gb and I have plenty of room. It may be that I have to do this kind of restore every 6 months or so.
Any idea what was bloating my "other"?

[Q] Restore apps that are still on the phone??

Yesterday my G2x was caught in a reboot cycle and I could do nothing but use a hard reset. I did not wipe any data however. My phone booted up like the day I bought it, but none of my apps are are in the app drawer. After media scanning, gallery found all my pictures and music app found all my music. I used a file explorer and saw that all my app data is still there too. Is there any way I can make android recognize these apps? There is some personally important data in those apps. My device was almost new and unrooted, but I would be willing to root.
Factory resets wipe user data and apps. You will have to reinstall them. Once reinstalled any data they had stored on your sd card should show up. In the future it would benefit you to use a program like titamium backup to keep your apps backed up.

[Q] Android Virus? Interal Phone Storage Maxing Out

[UPDATE] My phone crashed and then got stuck in a boot loop, so I had to reset it. I would still like input from anyone concerning the below, because whatever caused the internal storage problem directly contributed to the boot loop.
I have seen several other posts about this issue for several different phones, all from April, but it hasn't been resolved in any other forum, so I thought I would start here. My issue just started today. I have a Droid X that is running a CM7 nightly with a couple of zeppelinrox scripts. I have had CM7 installed since January, so I believe it does not relate to CM7 or any other mods I am running. I was thinking that it must be a virus. What happened (and continues to happen) is this:
- My phone played the message tone, and I got a notification saying that my phone storage was almost full and that I needed to do something about it. I thought that this was very odd, since I have 6.2 gigs of internal storage, and I don't have that many apps installed, and I have all of my pictures and other media on my SD Card.
- I then got a notification that my text message inbox was full, so an incoming text message was rejected. I get this notification every couple of minutes or so.
- I deleted several of my largest apps on my phone, which should have freed up about 30mb. It showed that I had 12mb free, which quickly shrank to 5mb, then 100kb, than 0.0kb, as if something was actively filling it up.
- I deleted about 700 text messages, and still got the same error as before.
What should I do???
Well, you won't lose anything trying to use an antivirus app.
Is there a way I can install it from my computer to my phone's SD card? I have been attempting to download an AV app, but Google Play force closes itself whenever I try to do this. Very frustrating!
You could try re-installing the whole rom.
Well you can download an APK (if exists) of a FREE antivirus and install it on your phone from the SD Card.
If it's a virus i don't think that it's stored on the sdcard, it could be there but the system is infected anyway.
same thing here
i have a droid x 2 global with cm7, I have the same problem . everything has been good but as of two days ago i started getting storage full and cant receive text warnings . i have like 6gb internal storage with very few apps installed and if i delete them and nothing really happens . i have pulled my hair out with this one. I did a fresh wipe "data and factory" and reinstalled c7 with an updated version . it all was good until 12 hours later bam same messages. did another wipe/reinstall when prompted to enter google account and stuff I deselected the box "allow google to restore phone" or something like that and haven't installed any apps. so far so good. i'm going to slowly install the apps i had and try to figure out what is going on. please let me know if you find a solution. the weird thin is it just started happening . i though virus but wtf ,
quigley, have you visited any websites on your phone that you don't normally go to? What internet browser app are you using? I am using Dolphin Mini, and I was researching some stuff with Google, and visited many sites I don't normally go to, so maybe a virus came from there.
Since my reset last night, I have yet to experience any problems. Thankfully, I had made a backup of all my apps and settings with Titanium Backup a week or so ago, and all my media was stored on my SD Card, so I didn't lose much. I never use the Google backup. And check this out:
Total App Usage: 289mb. Free: 6.3gb.
And this is the same set up I had right before the "event!" It must have been a virus. I see no other reason for 6 gigs to get that completely filled up in minutes. It can't have been CM7, because I haven't updated it in months! I wish someone could shed some light on this.

You can install it via the Web Market.

I have been using stock CM7 browser, and i don't browse much usually just google news, "never porn or torrent sites " i have a desktop for that fun. so i really don't think it was a virus from browsing . i haven't had any trouble since my second wipe and not using google restore during setup. i'm still slowly adding my usual apps. we will see what happens , P.S also when this happened i was unable to move stuff onto sd card , it showed full also. I really don't think it was a virus but it sure seems that way.

Missing data after reboot? Help!

Hi guys, i was playing a game called F18 Carrier Landing, when my phone froze. I long held the power button so that it could reboot. After it rebooted, i unlocked it, and it gave me the interface as if i freshly flashed a new rom or i did a factory reset (the interface asking about google and setting up accounts). So, i completed that and once my home screen popped up, i faced a few force closes, from titanium backup, my anti-virus software Avast, and various other applications. I was very freaked out at this point. I remember reading something about fixing permissions if i faced constant force closes, so i rebooted to recovery and fixed permissions. Booted up fine, still missing data, but no force closes. But my google maps does not seem to work, i open it and it opens to the orange-ish checkerboard backing, but then force closes. I'm not exactly sure what to do at this point. Can anyone advise me on what to do or if this ever happened to them? For reference, i'm still on Froyo (don't ask why) 2.2.1, ROM's Audiophile Redux by Raver. If you require additional info to help me find a solution, i will gladly comply. Thanks!
EDIT1: I uninstalled my Maps with Titanium and restored a really old version from September of last year, and it seems to be working. Or atleast it opens and loads.
EDIT2: It seems to only load apps stored on my internal/phone storage. As i checked Applications in settings, the SD tab was empty as if there are not apps from the SD card installed, what can i do about this?
This has happened to many of us on GB. Crazy it happened on Froyo. You are going to need to reinstall your missing apps. If it is similar to what happened to us your phone factory reset on it's own.
Alright thanks, when it happened i thought it was a pretty serious problem, but as i restore my apps from Titanium, i realize it's not that bad. Just glad to know i wasn't alone on this ordeal. I plan on hopping onto AOKP or maybe MIUI when my contract ends, this phone is just to valuable to me at the moment. They both seem so fast and amazing, plus AOKP has themes. K, so quick question, do you know the reason behind this, i mean, is my SD corrupted or something? I can still play the music and the videos from it on my phone, but i don't understand why it wouldn't read the apps on the SD.
None of us have nailed down the cause unfortunately.
Thanks anyways, up and running with most of my apps back. Gotta get around to flashing a new ROM someday. So many good one's coming out!

[Q] Attempting Nandroid App Data Extraction

Hello all,
I've ran into a circle of issues. I'm rooted, have touch CWM (can't remember the exact version) and had SynergyROM installed. I downloaded PowerAMP. Some people may stop me there and tell me that's the problem. During the Aroma installation, I must have ticked the option that optimizes apps and causes a long first boot. After researching this issue, I have found is a bad thing to do. I don't know why I would have chosen that option but this is the end of the path that I've come to.
What happened was PowerAMP was stuck on installing. So I attempted to find it and cancel it or uninstall, but it was no where on my phone, not in the notification bar, and was stuck on installing in the market.
So, I go about my business on my phone and it suddenly shuts down. I start it up, and it boots normally until it gets to "Optimizing app 1 of 1". I let it sit for about 30 minutes before I pulled the battery. I performed a nandroid backup, rebooted, same issue. I researched the issue and found people reporting success after wiping the cache and dalvik cache, so i did so. Now it reported "Optimizing apps 1 of 250" and went fine until it got stuck at 250. I let it sit for an hour before I pulled the battery again. I wiped data/cache/dalvik and reflashed a clean SynergyROM, the phone was working perfect. Then attempted restoring the backup, but still got the same issue.
I found a new ROM like I had been planning on doing since my phone was wiped anyway, and download Nandroid Manager to extract the data from my apps as I had read in the past was possible. Upon exploring the backup, I noticed the month and date were correct, but the year was 1980. There is NO data, in the data/data area except com.android, com.samsung and com.verizon packages.
Am I missing something? Why is all the .apk information in the ext4.tar but NONE of my app data remains? Am I screwed? I had an older backup from January in which I found the same apps with older data and that restored fine. I have Expense Manager, for example, and I started using it in the last week of January. Once I setup my budget I backed up. Since then, I've entered in all of my income and expenses and was planning to backup before the PowerAMP issue. Everything was working smooth, no tweaks made to the ROM, no issues whatsoever until now. So I can only restore data from the old backup and not the latest one.
Thank you so much in advance.
P.S.: Extra question, but not nearly as important - I can't seem to find a consistent answer. When performing a nandroid recovery, from say, in this case SynergyROM, does it matter what ROM I've flashed? Doesn't the nandroid recovery basically wipe the slate clean and lay everything back out just like you would do when replacing carpet, or a bandaid? Just a curiosity.
EDIT: I just discovered Titanium PRO can extract. Bought it. Tried it. Expense Manager crashes. Now, unless Expense Manager is installed, it doesn't even show up in extraction.
I have another idea - is there a way to EDIT a nandroid backup? For instance, can I REMOVE PowerAMP from the nandroid backup and restore through CWM without having to go through all of this? If it was just one app I wouldn't care but..I have at least 15 different apps with a couple months worth of data :/ My fault for sure..but I still harbor faith in this community nonetheless.

EDIT 2: PROBLEM SOLVED! Woo hoo! For anyone with a similar issue, I suppose I was just too frustrated to realize all courses of action. So this is the sequence in which I got the data back:
1: Installed updated app straight from the market, made sure it was closed and not in memory
2: Opened Titanium PRO and selected the nandroid backup
3: Recovered DATA ONLY
4: Opened app
5: Danced.
Hopefully this helps anyone with this similar issue.

My phone just wiped itself...

Hello,
something bad and very strange happened: My OP6 just wiped itself. My last actions on the phone were:
Used Google Keep to prepare my trip to the supermarket
Turned on some music
Noticed that V4A was not active (happens sometimes) so I rebooted
Turned on music again, V4A activated
I arrived at the store and wanted to switch to Keep but noticed that my app switcher is not working (it said no recent apps)
I thought 'strange bug but whatever let's open Keep via the normal launcher icon'
and then BAAM it asked for my google account, and the app crashed
Since I have a very bad memory and relied on my created list, I rebooted my phone once again and suddenly (almost) everything was reset... my launcher, Whatsapp, PowerAmp, Youtube Music basically everything but my system settings and system apps (including Magisk Modules). WTF?!?!
I quickly checked my SD card via a file explorer... all my movies, downloads, mp3 music, Titanium Backups erased :crying:
Now, instead of enjoying my Friday evening, I am sitting here and trying to restore my phone, music and so on.
Luckily, I mostly use cloud backups except for my movies and music (and my most recent Titanium Backups..)
Has anything like that ever happened to you?
By the way, I have another user on this phone and apparently this account wasn't wiped.. very strange...
I use and root my phones since the Galaxy S1 and anything like this has never happened before... I regret that I don't have an external SD card now

Unfortunately you seem to be rooted/custom rommed. Post for the dev to see I guess but seems like a perfect storm screwed you up
Yeah I use the stock rom with root but without TWRP https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/how-to/oneplus-6-magisk-root-oos-5-1-5-t3794440
I will try to contact the dev, but it could have been any app with root rights so it will be even harder to determine the cause.
same thing happened to me stock 5.1.9, my storage just had about 20 directorys with random numbers and letters.
all gone, got into a boot loop and had to use the unbrick tool!
Do you have fsync disabled? this can corrupt your data..
Mine did something like this a couple of days ago - was working fine and when I turned on the screen it asked which launcher I want to use. All installed apps were gone and acted like a new phone (no text messages, phone history was blank, no contacts).
After a reboot it went back to normal....
I'm running 5.19 rooted with custom recover and stock kernel.
