Flash this Note 5 or keep it stock? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note5

So I always root every single phone I get days into getting it. It has been different with this one. I want to root it so badly but I really want to use Samsung Pay. Chase Bank JUST got support, even though I don't have Chase, my girlfriend does so I can use her card from my phone lol.
I haven't been able to find anything indicating KNOX won't be tripped by ANY root method or even being reversed. If I could reset the KNOX counter then I will root away, but there isn't anyway to do that.
I don't even know what I'm asking, any input? Thanks folks!
Edit: It's a T-Mobile Note 5 SM-N920T

You will probably get better help if you had a moderator move this to the T-mobile Q and A threads.

Nope - not going to happen. Rooting the Note 5 trips the Knox flag and it cannot be reset. Pingpong root (which didn't trip Knox) was killed off before the Note 5. If you root there will be no Samsung Pay (and the like), probably ever.
That said I rooted - as you can see from my signature I also have an iPhone, which I use for Apple Pay, so no worries!!!!

I got a chance to use Samsung Pay with my girlfriends Chase card today and I'm not impressed. I waited all this time for nothing. Oh well, time to root. Any suggestions on method and ROM?

Root - no strong feelings!
Rom @drketan L6 - love it!!! And a responsive developer - fabulous!!!

lol.

You should really root. Opens up so many possibilities. Ad blocking, titanium backup, cache cleaning, the list goes on and on.
Not to mention the roms.
I'm on Tek's latest rom and it's sooo much better than stock.
Just borrow her chase card.

I am in the same situation. Not asking if I should root or not but haven't decided for myself. Been with android since 08 and have rooted every phone I've had, Knox is a different animal all together and, tho I like the note I know I won't be with it for too terribly long. I think tripping Knox will hurt the resale...I remember why I didn't care for Samsung all to well now.

Don't really see how tripping Knox effects resale since most buyers wouldn't know how to check. Just root. Life's too short.

Yeah, come to the dark side. Root for all the people on the other carriers with locked bootloaders.

Amen. I myself am a recovering AT&T victim and I was so bummed when I learned they lock the bootloaders. That's one of the main reasons I switched to T-Mobile
On topic: Root it. Samsung pay is sorta cool, but sacrificing all the features you get with root for one sorta cool feature doesn't add up to me.

I don't miss root at all. Especially with AdGuard and the ability to use my custom font, I'd rather have Samsung Pay and updates when they're out.

correct my fellow xda member. With the xml that shuts down so many apps and the ability to change my fonts and finally nova launcher. With all this in place and a 1+ that I have rooted and running marshmallow life is grand. To those that say you are not impressed with the ability to not carry you cards with you and simply touch and pay you make no sense. Also why root a Samsung phone which can be used at 95% of the places you go and keep an Apple because of Apple Pay? If there is Apple Pay then there is Android Pay and Samsung gives you two options.
Sorry just my opinion on things but I root to remove bloat and increase battery life. Of course some options are great but I have found alternatives which help me cope. First phone since winmo days that I have not touched per se

Guess it's honesty. I wouldn't sell something without disclosing pertinent information. It's not this short life I am worried over.

But, if you buy a used phone you expect the first owner to have used it. It's like saying you won't listen to music on it cause you might hurt the speakers.
I'm glad you're happy being not rooted. The note 5 is awesome stock.
As for me, I got mine the day they were released and was rooted the second I got to my cpu.
I've no regrets. I had to do an exchange. They gave me a new one no questions asked.
Knox isn't really the big deal people think it is.

You are right, to each their own. I have been on androids since the g1 pre order October of 08, rooted all my phone's and compiled cyan or AOSP for most of them. This is the first phone I have had that by rooting you actually lose something useful besides warranty. I agree, root is better but with the ability to still block ads and literally turn off services it's not as important to me as it once was. Your music analogy is flawed tho, listening to music should in no way void your warranty or remove a feature of the phone. Odds are, in an exchange situation they probably wouldn't even check, they could tho.
You are right, most people wouldn't know how to check for Knox but those same people probably know how to use pay, and an ever increasing chance they will want to.
Hard to say this after hating touchwiz for so long but you are right again, after a bit of tweaking the note isn't all thar bad stock, if I decide to keep the phone for a length of time, I will root it depending on software updates etc but that's also an added feature with android, it's your choice. I'll take the perceived hit on selling it with full disclosure.

Both of you have valid points.
I rooted because I hate, Hate, HATE FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM AND WHAT'S APP AND ALL THAT OTHER BULLSTUFF!!! Sorry got intense there. Bloat does nothing but steal, and for a device that has to be so "secure," they are sure keen on securing the wrong things.
I really do hope no information such as credit card info is being shared by the Bloat apps. Yes they say Samsung pay is secure.....*1 year later* Have you or anyone you know used Samsung Pay?!
Just saying, you never know. I rather use my card itself anyways. No one has successfully stolen it yet. Weird thing too though, as I'm getting older; and I'm 29, I've been using cash a lot more often instead of swiping my card.

Is a root method without tripping knox feisable?

I know i may get some slack for this post but is it realistically possible that someone could find a root method that doesnt trip knox. My last device was a note 3 so i havent followed whether the s5, note 4 or s6 have acheived this. I like the idea of samsung pay (even though im in the beta and it doesnt work with my car) and im hoping it works with my card once the app is public. I cant live with a phone that cant run a custom rom but if i at least have root i feel like i could manage. So am i just being stupid and say screw samsung pay or is their a real possiblity that someone could find root without the knox trip.

It only works for Bank of America or US Bank cards now I believe although there is support for Amex, Visa and Mastercard. They will probably be up and running once Samsung Pay is officially launched on the 28th. I can tell you this. Samsung Pay is a battery hog. It runs all the time unlike Google Wallet that you open when you need it. And the way you unlock your phone is tied into Samsung Pay. For example, if you select fingerprint scanner for Samsung Pay it automatically becomes the lockscreen default to unlock the phone. So if you want a pattern to unlock your phone you have to change it in Samsung Pay to unlock the device. You can't have both. Well at least when I tried you couldn't. LoL
I dont think enough devs have a note 5, i would guess something may come out of another phone maybe and translate over. I'm in the same boat, my n3 was rooted right away once I was convinced sprint wasnt going to deny a warranty claim over knox. I'm kinda holding out for s pay, but if it sounds like a bunch of brain damage....
Actually just thought of something, I use drive through and eat at bars and restaurants a lot, not keen on handing my phone to someone, probably gonna pass on s pay...

Im guessing no one else has found any data to support this. I would assume someone would be talking about it by now....but, it seems development is kinda slow (absolutely no disrespect intended) or the possiblity is people who want root are not concerned about knox so there hasnt been alot of interest. From what i can tell though is kingroot was for earlier devices and doesnt even work on an updated note 4 let alone a 5. Someone tell me im wrong. Im offereing 20 bucks for a root method. lol i know thats weak but maybe other people will join me. Thanks to anyone that looks into this.

why not just trip the knox and use google pay or other services out there? for me rooting and being able to customize and overclock is the priority than samsung pay..ill just use google pay instead
Having to switch kernals everytime i need to use gearvr is whats kinda stopping me. Also i thought android pay now detects all root even "systemless"

Potential Galaxy Note 5 Owner?!

I have a Sony Xperia Z1s and I'm coming up to my 2 year mark and looking to make an upgrade to a new device. I was hoping T-Mobile would carry the Sony Xperia Z5 but it seems they have no plans to carry it or being extremely quiet about it. I'm interested in the Galaxy Note 5 but I'm just concerned about a few things before making my purchase and hoping some Note 5 owners could help.
1. Does the Galaxy Note 5 have poor RAM management issues especially when multitasking after 5 or 6 apps are opened some will close in the background and have to be restarted over?
2. Can the T-Mobile Note 5 Variant be rooted (unlocked bootloader) without any issues?
3. How would you rate the battery life?
4. Should I wait for the holidays for some new promotions?
Well from my take
1. Yes TouchWiz has aggressive ram management, so.app reload happens. But if you are comfortable with rooting and playing with script, there is a tweak that was given how to fix the aggressive ram management or make it better I should say.
2 . Yes it can be rooted I believe the bootloader can be unlocked. Of course Knox will be tripped voiding you warranty.
3. I say it's great for me, average about 5-6hrs of screen on time. It varies from person to person.
4. That's a personal choice you will have to make. Holiday seasons do come with some.Great deals but who knows what will be this year's deals.
Sent from my White Note 5 Monster
1. The ram preformance is great. It rarely lags and is very fast. App reloads do happen. I tested out Instagram, Playstore, Messages, Phone, Facebook, and a couple more. I left them running for a bit while I played a game and went back to the exact same spot.
2. Root is very simple. It's pretty much 1 click of a button and then waiting 5 minutes.
3. Battery life depends on how often you use it. Im in school and use my phone a good amount. I usually get out at 2:30 with 60ish% and then at the end of the day Im left with aroung 20-30%. That counts watching youtube videos everyday, on snapchat, instagram, playing a couple games, ect. (I do have a stock deodexed rom though)
4. Depends on your budget. T-Mobile has recently came out with some great promotions lately and who knows if they will with the note 5 anytime soon.

So only when you unlock bootlader tripping knox will void the warranty not from just rooting?
From my understanding yes

If you follow the guides on here as to get root, you will trip knox. I'm not sure about the bootloader, but if you install a custom recovery it's tripped. Basically in order to flash anything, except Samsung ROMs using Odin, you'll trip it. I wonder if there even is a root-injected stock kernel that could flash in Odin? I don't think there is.
But, the Note5 is a beast stock. I had the Z1s, and the Z2. Besides just being older, I'm really a fan of the Note5. I don't think you'd miss your rooted Z1s at all with a new Note in your hands.

So once you trip Knox it is irreversible? I would like to keep my warranty for as long as possible just in case something goes wrong with the phone. If its irreversible then I might have to wait a few months before rooting it just to be safe.
I'm looking at buying this phone for my wife's Christmas present. To my understanding it ships with an unlocked bootloader. ... My main concern is using it on straight talk.

For what it's worth, I've never heard of T-Mobile checking knox for a warranty exchange. I've exchanged with knox tripped myself as well as upgraded through jump with no issues. That's not to say you'll have the same experience though. As for app reloads, I notice it less on the note 5 than I did on my S6 edge.
I always send my phones in a soft bricked state on purpose. Never had an issue.

Thoughts on rooting this bad boy

I just got a note 5 on sprint and I love it, but I'm really not sure if I want to root. Every device since I got my Samsung moment has been rooted (htc evo 4g lte, s3,s5 for the day I had it, and then the g3). Anyways, my question is losing Samsung pay worth rooting? I mean I love all the things I can do with root, I just wanna know what everyone's opinion is, so I can weigh pros and cons of rooting.

There is a thread on it here over in the general forum.
You need to use ODIN to flash TWRP and then flash a custom kernel, or just flash TWRP with ODIN and then flash a custom ROM. They are already rooted.

How often does anyone go out without your keys and wallet and drivers license. I mean really, I used it a bunch when I went jogging, but it's not 100%. The first time it didn't work I luckily had my wallet and my regular card swiped just fine. I rooted my phone the second I got home that day.
It's totally up to the user to root if need be. I, however, chose not to root this phone only because everything I needed root for I can accomplish without it whilst keeping Samsung Pay and Android Pay intact. I use the latter more than the previous so root is a no go for me based on that. However, I've tried Samsung Pay a few times and it worked with no issues. You just have to ask yourself what exactly do I need root for? These were my needs for root and the fixes I found to accomplish what I needed without rooting:
Camera Shutter Sound fix( Enforced Stream Silencer app)
Hotspot Mod( APN Settings mod. Need MSL # for this which can be gotten through Sprint Chat)
Ad Remover( AdGuard Premium App)
APK Backups/Restore( App Backup and Restore app)
System UI Backup( Smart Switch on PC)
Bloatware Removal/System App Disabler( Package Disabler Pro)
Add any app to MW( MW- Pen App Enabler Pro)
Themes( Samsung Theme Store)
These can all be achieved without root. More importantly, everything works as it should and when you need it to work without getting the dreaded FC and doing trial and error to fix it. If the Pros outweigh the Cons then do it. If not, don't root.
I honestly don't miss it. I have more time to spend with my family and not trying to find what a developer took out to make a feature of the phone work. I get updates on time without waiting for a rooted rom to be posted. I'm not trolling XDA or any other blog seeing when the next update is to whatever rom I'm using to see if hopefully the issues I had with the rom were addressed with the new build. Do I miss root? Sometimes. But ultimately I'm glad I didn't root. This was my choice. As I said, everyone is different. You have to do what works for you. I love that I have full functionality of my phone and confidence knowing if I try a feature it will work as advertised.
I stayed stock for exactly 4 weeks and used samsung pay a few times a day with 5 different credit cards. I've been rooted for the past 3 months and i do NOT miss samsung pay at all. I reap the benefits of root all day everyday because of the amazing ROM dev @tdunham and the amazing KERNEL dev @UpInTheAir.

Root? Who's developing for this device?

I know several people have already received the new T-mobile S7 in the mail yesterday, and I am looking forward to when my S7 comes. Are there any developers or teams working on root for this device? Are there any teams planning a release of any multi-handset root? Usually we don't find out until it's published, but sometimes we get advanced warning....
1: Is anyone getting this device and going to be developing for it?
2: Has anyone heard of a root solution being worked on?
3: Is there any rumblings or hearsay of a multi-handset root (universal root)?
After only using the phone for 24 hours I am very satisfied with how it came out of the box. I would love to remove a couple bloatware apps and find a good darker theme but otherwise, I'm not sure there much to be tweaked. This battery is KILLER!
Needs Root...
Coming from S5...
Initial impression is good. Built better, battery better, feels nice in the hand.
Camera is definitely snappier.
We need root however.
Annoying constant notification that you have an SD card inserted pops up after reboot (not sure why that's necessary), bloatware sucks, can't easily change fonts without root.
I would love to see a reasonable amount of bloatware removed along with some universal tweaks in a relatively stock ROM, and am willing to subsidize a motivated developer. Those who participate in the T-Mobile S5 forum are aware 'Malbert' is raising money for an S7... That would be good for all of us who are diving in early.
Still waiting for a protective case, as most of them are not shipping yet...
Happy to be here!
There is a universal bloatware removal tool out there that works non root..
Can't remember name.. Look for that , that should help disable some of that bloat that settings won't let you disable. I ordered a UAG on 2/26 ,only a few days ago but yet to receive it as well.
I use Package Disabler Pro when I want to disable apps without root. It works great and is the only solution for the time being..

Thanks! Will definitely try that in the interim.
Considering only a few have it right now it's way too early lol
i can see now that we have some seasoned moderators for the forum, so hopefully that's an indication somw of them are working on the t-mo version...?
I have mine in today. Edge model. Very nice and clean in hand
I've got my S7 as well - can't wait to see what happens from a dev perspective. I'd love to see what can be done to remove bloat, etc., but I'm also thinking I may not trip Knox this time around because I'd like to keep it intact and keep android pay/samsung pay working. I've always rooted without worrying about that in the past, but I'd like to try these out.

You might want to try the app I suggested then! I've been using it since the Note 4 and it has never failed me.
Package disabler pro ftw ??

Exactly my concern as well, although, my Samsung pay, Android pay and Google wallet all fail on the S7 for me so far.. I can't even add bank info or cards before it closes on me :/

Best bloat removal app for non root. Been using it for a while too. It actually turns apps off not remove them thats the only thing that sucks but its still great. You can create xml files of all turned off apps to share with others which is pretty cool too.
As soon as root is available ill create a dual speaker mod for you guys. Im picking the s7 up for my wife next week.

First 2 days I had phone, Android Pay wouldn't let me add card. Something changed last night...perhaps Google realizing that the device actually had been released, and I was able to add a card last night around 9pm. New to Android Pay, so it didn't work when I tried to use it this morning...LOL. Gonna try it again later.
Great! It looks like we have some talented devs showing up! That's very promising! Welcome guys, I too just got my S7 in, and I'm looking forward to rooting and modding, so I guess now we wait

Whatever you cook up would be fun! I actually just pre-ordered the gold S7 for my wife because of the IP68 rating. She's always putting her phone in danger of water lol.

root access to S8 or S8+

does any know if s8 or s8+ can be rooted?
are there plans to do this or does samsung now block this?
some tools titanium backup et.al. need root access
Yeah I also want to root it. Plz anyone tell the method.
Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk
Won't be a method until it's released, then I'm certain the devs here will start cracking on it. Give time, the guys here are pretty good at what they do but there's still no guarantee root will be achieved (US models that is).

Root will happen
(If not I'll be suprised)
Look at s7 edge (exynos) if you want to have the approximate method.
Once twrp is released, I bet around the beginning of Mai, you will be able to install it using Odin (breaks knox, s pay, etc)
From there you'll be able to flash whatever you want (magisk, SuperSU, etc)
Edit:
Although I just stumbled over this:
Quote:
Finally, the Exynos 8895 also includes what Samsung is calling an “enhanced security sub-system with a separate security processing unit” for use with user authentication, mobile payments, and the like. Based on Samsung’s description this sounds a heck of a lot like Apple’s Secure Enclave, which would be a very welcome development, as in Apple’s case it has made their phones a lot harder to break into.

yeah, saw on their website that encryption layers are going to be a lot stronger. I still think it'll be cracked. It's a large enough phone. just might take longer than normal.
Even root on Verizon's locked bootloader?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Yea root not enough for me, also need unlocked bootloader
geez the phones not even out yet. Gotta give the devs time to get there hands on the phone, then time to actually find a way to root it.
Would it be wise to right off the bat unenable automatic downloads of "Security Update: Improves Performance and Battery" in case someone finds a way to Root and they slip in an irreversible Firmware Update?
I bought this phone knowing it's going to be at least a year before at minimum root being achieved
if at all ,so I'm not getting my hopes up at all
This phone might be the straw the breaks the developers backs
I only needed a rooted phone for ARU unchained anyway ,but since the area51 got it to work unrooted
I can afford to wait

i mean yea, kinda, but your not gonna get updates. Personally I am just gonna update my phone, and hopefully they find a way to root. My biggest concern is using samsung pay with my Gear S3, while having my phone rooted. idk if that will be possible so until then im just gonna wait.

What do you mean? Even my Note 4 after ages waiting for the newest Android (Lollipop and Marshmallow) and nothing else for some suspicious reason recently they have been pushing updates pretty regular with the exact same description I posted, "improves performance and enhances battery life" or some $h!t which from experience these updates definitely do NOT do anything of the sort so it makes you wonder…

I use Samsung pay with my gear S3 and it's linked to my rooted 6p.

I hear you, preference I guess, I just like being up to date. I find that sometimes you are unable to use certain features without the updates.
I have the note 4 myself, and the only update that was a problem with that phone was MM, you could not downgrade from it. I have the AT&T variant so, no root access, and the current temp root that they have listed on the forums is not viable because your only temp rooted on experimental testing firmware.
The main feature you'll be missing out on is Bixby most likely, idk how good it will be or how bad, but you'll be behind that, apparently Bixby is not finished yet, and will not be shipped with the phone, at least not the complete version.

Haha, Buzby (as I call it) is the one INTRUSION I do NOT want!! Never asked for it, just forced upon us. This would be great, but I suspect the Phone already has Bixby embedded into it, what with all the hype (publicity for it) about it not functioning at launch I believe is a marketing ploy to bring attention to it. The part that is not being made available at launch is their end, nothing to do with needing an update for it to work (for those who blindly want it).
See, you watch, they will make such a big deal, like a major announcement when it is made to function and they "switch on their Bixby servers" it'll be posted all over the web like when the Note 7 fiasco (supposedly) happened.
Stop for second. And think. THINK. For yourself. That right there is invaluable advice. Bixby is not your friend.

I use it also from my S7 Edge. Works just fine. I have the BT version of the Gear S3 tho. Pay dont work with international(the one on amazon) version of the S3.
