Unlocked and activated an S6 for a friend whose phone died. It's new, was never activated, AT&T branded. It's working fine, except it's still all the way back on 5.1.1 BOJ7. I read that AT&T pulled the Marshmallow update from its servers. So I'm left wondering whether a) there's a way to get the phone to update without needing to flash it, b) what would happen if we simply waited for the Android N rollout. Friend is not tech savvy, so if we go the flashing route I'll definitely be doing all the work. But I know that using a custom ROM means tripping Knox and losing some features. Suggestions? Thanks.
You can check if sammobile has official 6.x roms for the AT&T version. Considering those are official they shouldn't trip Knox as far as I am aware.
This is ofcourse that some one uploaded it their before it was pulled.

I'd personally keep it on 5.1.1. Got regularly ~4 hrs SOT with powernap on those firmwares.
Thanks for all the advice. Took the phone to a Best Buy with a Samsung Experience Center and they flashed it for me. Was shockingly quick and easy, Knox wasn't tripped, phone runs great. Highly recommend to anyone in the same boat.

They flashed the phone for you? Unreal, is it in warranty?
Well, I bought it new but I bought it resale, so I'm still figuring out the warranty situation. But they didn't even ask. I was expecting to go there and have to explain, but the guy just said "so you want me to bring you to Marshmallow with latest firmware?" I confirmed, he plugged into his computer (wonder what utility, since he didn't even care that phone was AT&T branded but unlocked) and the whole process took ten minutes, tops. Given that AT&T doesn't seem to push updates to its devices that have been unlocked and are running on other carriers, I may have to do this again for future updates, but that's no big deal to me.

I remember back when I had the Note 2. You could reset the counter that gets triggered in Download Mode. Does the Galaxy S7 have a similar counter once I root the phone and install custom ROMS? And is there a way to reset it?
I'm getting the SM-G930F from my brother today. And I'm looking forward to it, but rooting the phone & using Xposed Framework & AdAway are priorities for me on any phone. It has two years warranty, so if anything happens to the phone I want to be able to return it.
Also after 1 year I can upgrade the phone to whatever I want on his plan, so I'll likely get the Galaxy S8. Would be great if someone can answer me today before I root it.
I'm going to use CF Autoroot, then install the latest TWRP. Do a full backup using TWRP. Copy that to the PC, before I start experimenting with different ROMS & mods.
Also another quick question, why do I not see any Android 7 stock Android ROMS or CM based ROMS around? That's surprising. Are the developers waiting for Google to release the source code? When is that expected?

Installing other custom ROM will trigger know and you will lose warranty. I don't see any reason to install custom ROM at least at the moment. There is a root method that claims to not trigger knox but I haven't tried it.

Try the root method that people relate that doesn't trigger knox..
And there's a few roms to nougat, no custom kernel for now.

Any root method for the G930F will trip KNOX and void warranty (Afaik it is other models that can be rooted without tripping, unless I've missed something lately)
Flashing anything custom will also trip KNOX
There is no way to reset the KNOX counter
If you trip it, that is permanent

All, warranty is warranty, it will be refused
In some cases people get lucky and Samsung repair anyway, maybe because they didn't check, but if KNOX is tripped, all repairs will cost you money with no warranty

In Europe, Samsung has to repair the equipment even with Knox tripped, as long as it was not root that damaged the hardware.
I had to send my phone to Samsung, because i screwed up the phone with Xposed and Samsung repaired it without charging anything.

Oops, looks like i got lucky.
Will not try and root again so soon.
Alright, so I've done some research on this subject.
Most root or ROMs will "Fry the knox circuit." Basically, what that is, is a secure, totally private fuse that your phone has, which is like 2 nanometers small chip in you phone's mother board. It's an absolutely tiny fuse that protects the ADMIN section of you phone. Currently most, if all known methods, of root will trip it. So, as stupid as it sounds, I'd say "Buy a USB killer." Which is a USB device meant to test protection circuits. And if you phone is already dead to some point, if they can't power it up, they may just say "**** it" and do a warranty replacement.
Otherwise, unless they can tell, they'll just swap it for a preowned model if they can't tell you ****ed with it.
Honestly, if you have insurance on it, smash it with a hammer. If not, say it started smoking while charging and make sure it won't charge, Apple is scared ****less towards possible fire damage and samsung just had that Note 7 thing
I'm just curious to know whether or not it's possible to restore from a KNOX trip after installing TWRP and a custom Rom. Does restoring stock Rom via Odin restore KNOX status to x0?
No. Once it's done it's done. It's a hardware fuse that blows. You can't undo that.....

I just got mine in the mail. Literally 3 minutes ago. SM-G955FD.
So aster rooting I'm definitely going to see Samsung Pay related errors and if i were to attempt to resell, those errors would be dead giveaway. Correct?
I'm debating whether or not to root and put custom Rom on it.

The phone will be missing all those features stated above and also no warranty
Will majorly affect resale price
Not really fair to resell without stating the issues from rooting
So I guess that settles it. Not going to root. That sucks. How is Samsung getting away with this ****? Apple-like behavior. I'll miss rooting; custom roms etc.
Thats whay i will sale my s8+. Thats bored whithout custom roms.
I will back to Note 5, S7 Edge. I think the "new" note 7 will come whith the same problem like the s8. Fu()/&= KNOX !
It's Samsung's loss, modding community will move away from Samsung devices if they continue this lock down crap. I got an international variant so I can root. I don't really care about Samsung pay, S health and secure folder are nice so that sucks but there are likely alternatives in the play store.

You're absolutely right. I've already started looking as other devices, the only caveat is the specs -- the hardware. They're not up to par with Samsung's technology. I hope I'm wrong about this. If i am and there are other devices that are just as good or even better, I'll jump ship.

You can use those on a rooted device by hiding root. If you go back to stock, those will not work.

AFAIK, S Health is the only one of the knox-related apps that can work on a rooted device. Check out this post for instructions.

Samsung had locked devices since at least the S6 using Knox. Still one of the highest selling phones out there so I doubt they will care about a few losses in sales. Provably make up more I sales gained by corporate clients.

Lets be clear here, warranty is only lost in some countries, not all. In the EU its not, even if Samsung claim it is. You should be getting the seller to deal with any warranty claim anyway, not Samsung directly.

Its a small price to pay for the potential security issues a hacked Knox can bring, for example.. Its possible to simulate knox, or 'secure folder' on a device, but in reality the phone is sending back all the information in that folder to a third party server. 0.01% is probably still overkill.
Far less than 1%... Well, for giant company like Samsung is, thats lot of money.. But... where is Knox exactly located on motherboard? Can be regain by erasing all (nand erase all, efs, etc) and than flashing all partitions through BOX-Octopus Box and dongle????

No. Rooting has literally nothing to do with the knox counter. Knox is protection against untrusted code.
Every single snapdragon s8 s8+ and n8 of rooted with a 0x0 counter, so it's a little more than possible
Just updated my galaxy s8 + to the newest firmware and my Bluetooth still not working...... could someone help me plz!!!! I did a hard rest and clear cache already
It's not the software. I had this happen about a month ago. It just fries. I sent it in, and Samsung screwed up, didn't replace anything but the screen and sent it back. I had to burn my upgrade at the store to replace it. The new phone, flashed the ADB to it the moment I got it, no issues with Bluetooth.
I have insurance on it thru geek squad but it's also under warranty on Samsung.... U think it's worth going thru Samsung or just replace it?
Honestly, I'm lighting up Samsung for this. They had the phone for a week and didn't even fix the problem. I'm dealing with corporate on it now.

I'd Geek Squad it. Samsung is a 13 day turnaround.
Last phone I ever rooted was my old Galaxy S6. Years ago. In the end I ended up flashing back to stock. Cant remember why.
But yesterday morning after I got the android pie / one ui OTA .. I cannot use substratum and andromeda anymore!! I hate the themes from the galaxy store with a passion.
Is it worth rooting just to theme? I guess losing Knox ain't a problem. My phone isnt under warranty, it's a tmobile phone unlocked with different cell carrier.
Any opinions ?? :highfive:

I tried pie on my wifes phone. Its cool. I like it. But nothing compares to a rooted device even if you dont have custom roms or that good stuff. Even a 1.5 year old s8 still get better battery life than a new stock one with all my tweaks. I even kind of broke the 80% charge barrier litrelly last night. Got a 90% charge. So imo if your a smart fellar and can follow the root mwthod instructions to a t i would always pick root over updates. Im still on a revision 2 bootloader and plan to be til the death of my device
I see you say tmobile. The US devices or U models cannot trip knox. You lose samsung pay while rooted but you can always restore back stock. Secure folder and pay will work after. Since we have locked bootloaders. And no way to unlock them since they are signed with 256 bit sha keys.
I got dual speaker mods, modded touchwiz, deodexed. Completely themed out. I try all kinds. I push root to its limits for a locked bootloader.

Yeah my phone is sm-g955u tmobile s8+ but unlocked and I use metro pcs.
And what is the 80% barrier? I read something earlier trying to find a rom if I were to root... I got parallels installed on my computer so I could have used Odin. (I sadly own a hackintosh, built from scratch mac in a PC tower)
I miss using substratum sense the pie update, but This equally Black & Red Samsung theme along with This awesome Samsung icon set is doing okay..

The kernel we have from Samsung the they do graciously left open to use for permissive root. Has a80% charge cap set in place from Samsung. Its a safety thing.
