Unlock bootloader on Galaxy S5, it may come true!!! - Verizon Galaxy S 5 General

Hi all,
Please read this news and share your opinions and keep our fingers crossed....
http://www.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5-bootloader-has-been-unlocked/

ive been waiting over a year for this this is awesome cant wait wait to get a nice custom rom onto this phone

I hate one of the responses on the video. "Verizon would pay more for this than any user would." I'll donate seriously if this was released. Would no longer have to bug my boss to upgrade to the Nexus 6 just so I can do what I want with my phone.

I am completely psyched for this!! I passed on a galaxy s6 just so I could still use my microsd card from my htc one remix, and I passed on a g4 for the fingerprint scanner so this is awesome news for this device, I would love to use cyanogenmod on here and its a definite positive knowing that once this is released, I can use marshmallow before its official ota release too! Plus the chance of this phone becoming dead in the forums will be slim to nothing once this is released, this is absolutely amazing news in my opinion. I don't care if they charge to unlock the bootloader or not, I'll be one of the first too pay to get mine unlocked and then I can be one of the cool kids with roms again lol ?
---------- Post added at 07:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:10 PM ----------
And the Verizon would pay quote I think is bs, they're making money either way, they could care less.

I hope it works. I have the dev edition and development is getting stale. This would open up a lot more development, assuming the devs haven't already abandoned this phone.

Only a few more months with the phone, why not go out in style! Hope this is true.

And they're probably going to sit on this and never do anything with it, or worse, sell the exploit to Samsung/Verizon. :/

Does this mean those of us who have unrooted, stock OG5 builds might also get root? Normally root comes first, then maybe unlocking the boot loader, correct? I am noob, but was hoping an unlocked boot loader might make a root exploit easier as well. Am I crazy?
Root, with the unlocked bootloader, would mean I could finally get out of my stock Verizon rom (when I'm on a t mobile mvno).

It depends on what the unlock method requires. If it needs root then it won't work. If it doesn't need root then it's likely that OG5 will be able to unlock.

Once bootloader is unlocked, the possibility is unlimited, any custom roms can be flash and root is just a piece of cake. If the bootloader is unlocked, we can flash a custom kernel where it allowed to root....at will. ...

And i just saw this comment and it made me sad.

If OEMs or Carriers bought exploits, I would be rich and no longer be posting on XDA. They don't.

According to what he's actually doing on the computer via ADB, he's using root commands which means it may require root. This is only speculation though because he does flash a bootloader file via Odin too and obviously you don't need root for Odin.
So essentially it could just be as easy as flashing a bootloader file via Odin.

It should be packed into something like sunshine or mofo, my two cents is that developers who find exploits should take money for it because if not you get burnt out easily.

Ouch. It's sad that the news regarding this got out to the general community like it did. It's tough pill to swallow for me, but I can understand why beaups would keep it private. No need to rage guys, but it does stink when things like this can't be released even with a giant warning label slapped on it..

Well, in that case, I guess I didn't need to hurry and root/unlock just now in the fear that I'd be blocked off forever.
Oh well, I really didn't want that "remote access" app anywhere near my phone.
I was able to update to the new OTA and keep Root/Bootloader Unlocked using The Mobile Odin Pro App.
By the way, no surprise but they did in fact "dumb down"on device searching.

Not giving Verizon more power, they tried to sneak this download at 230am if I wasn't up my phone may have taken it, either way we should be given the choice if we want this dl.as for a diagnostic tool we have the xda forums which in my option is better then Verizon help..ex.my phone txt/call not working...Verizon: did you try a factory reset?....my volume on my phone is way to low..Verizon: did you try a factory reset...I wanna change the led to fit the msg to my liking not working right.Verizon: did you try a factory reset?....this is what they use to tell me when I had a problem years ago, but now I look to the xda forum for advice, input, help, options. so I'll stay clear from Verizon helping me..lol this has been just a little example.from your neighbor hood friendly hulk...

I can confirm 100% you will have no issues with it. I look like a newbish person here as I don't come on xda much. I just thought I'd spread the love over here. I'm usually over @ Rootz.
http://rootzwiki.com/user/19244-goose306/
I don't like to pull this card, but hopefully you see I have enough reps over there to at least know what I'm talking about
That being said all its going to really do is give you a better radio and patch the no sim issue, and install more bloat (Verizon Remote Access) and dumb down your search abilities. So its about 50/50 as far as benefits. But if you don't like it you can ODIN back to previous firmware versions anyways, so it really isn't that big of a deal. The best benefit you could have would be to root it, unlock it, block the OTA, then install the new radio separately. This will get you the benefit of the new radio and patching the no sim error but without the new Verizon bloat and without the neutered search capability. Best of both worlds.
If you plan on flashing ROMs about the only thing you will be keeping from this OTA going forward will be the new radio. So it doesn't really make a lick of difference either way as the radio can be flashed separately as discussed.

The last time I checked all android based phones have a method to root and this phone is no different. If you check both android development sections you WILL see ROMs there to flash. Also if an android phone comes with an locked bootloader then there is a method to unlock it. This phone comes with a locked bootloader but there is an app for that.

If there was only like some sort of forum-like site that would give you that info....that would be pretty cool. One can dream though. :silly:
Thanks to an African-Canadian Sock Monkey, we can unlock the bootloader.
a quick look in the development thread would of answered this, but yes, it's VERY simple to root and ROM this phone (coming from HTC phones)
Very simple - did mine while sitting at work goofing around...There's more and more ROMs available every day and you can get support for ANYTHING from all the awesome people here. I'm new to modding phones and I'm so impressed
Just an added note to thank all at XDA Developers who helped my unlock and root my HTC Thunderbolt and my current Galaxy S3.
There's really little need to root and flash the S3 other than to remove VZW's bloatware and I appreciate that but XDA Developers are essential to the Thunderbolt, it required rooting and flashing to make it function properly!

Probably the someone. I know it was just a tweet, so maybe he was joking, but jcase tweeted about a month ago that he will no longer be providing anybody with any *unpatched* exploits. Based on the way people complain about him not "sharing" any exploits he has, I don't blame him. Anyway, I'd pin my hopes on somebody else.
Or, better yet, put the phone up on Swappa or something and go out and buy a developer edition of something, because that's your surest bet that you'll be able to root a phone going forward.

So your saying jcase probably has an exploit or two but he just doesn't want to release it to the public? Lol. That's messed up! I guess its just a waiting game until somebody else out there puts out an exploit for us non-rooters to use. *sigh* :/

I didn't say he had any exploits. I reported what he tweeted: he will not share any unpatched exploits. That means, I am pretty sure, that if he has any exploits (for any phones), he will wait until they are patched with an update before he shares it publicly, if he shares it at all, making it rather useless for somebody looking to root the phone with the exploit.
Here is the tweet: https://twitter.com/TeamAndIRC/status/460157450318929920
I am pretty sure it was in reference to a non-Moto device, but I'm sure he means the same for any device.
OK, here's a perfect example. Read this whole Twitter conversation between Jcase and some tool who thinks he's entitled to a root exploit.

And for everyone complaining about the cost of Sunshine,JUST BITE THE BULLET N DO IT! IT'S WELL WORTH IT! IF YOU'RE ON A HIGHER FIRMWARE,your Gonna spend more than$25 worth of man hours TRYING (almost positively unsuccessfully) to find a free way, and most of the free routes died with the older firmware. JCase n Beaups have done a great job,and once u use sunshine on your device,no OTA can take away S-off or an unlocked boot loader ,they may kill root, but as long as your s-off ,that's an easy fix. So to save yourself future aggrevation ,just get it now while u STILL CAN

If you accept the OTA update, it is highly unlikely you will be able to achieve root or S-OFF.

The simple answer is you should never wait. Bird in hand is better than a possible one in the bush.

There's no guarantee you'll be able to do it in the future. More than likely HTC has plugged the hole that Sunshine exploited on previous versions of the OS. There maybe another version of Sunshine waiting in the wings but I wouldn't count on it. Jcase (one of the 2 devs who came up with Sunshine) tweeted last week that if you want to s-off, better do it before the lollipop update. That's about all he said about it so I don't know if that means you're out of luck if you don't or not. It could be they have another version that they're holding back until the update is rolled out but they have no way of knowing if it will work for sure on official lollipop since nobody has received it yet. Or it could be that they've gotten a leaked version somehow and can't find a way in. Whatever the case, If you want s-off I would suggest you heed his warning and get it now while/if you can.

There is no promise that a new exploit will be found. There isn't always someone doing the work to find an exploit. A great example is the SGS3 which after its last OTA updated was locked down tight and nobody ever bothered to find an exploit for it, and that's how it's been ever since. Sunshine and root are extremely low risk. I'd definitely do it just like Dottat suggested. The guy knows his stuff and wouldn't give you errant advice.
