[REVIEW] Migrating from LG G4 to LG V10 - LG V10 General

First impressions....
Ok I just got my V10 and I've already got things to say about it.
This is the 2nd phone I've ever gladly paid full retail for. First being the Google Nexus 4. I was already looking through Craigslist and Swappa trying to catch a deal, always gotta get a deal. Meanwhile BAM! pre-Cyber Monday. I put my order in and got the -$100. I wanted to be in on time for the current promo.
So you get to know where I am coming fro, I'll give you a quick run down. I used a Samsung S3, great phone, got it because of a deal on CL.. ofc.. Then I got a Samsung Note, I liked the larger screen, but it was too wide and thick, really meh, don't remember what model, but I'm sure it was one of the early ones. Then I used a Motorola Atrix, Atrix 2 and Atrix HD for a long time. Got a Nexus 5 (it was ok, meh) barely used it for a month. Got the LG G3 as an "upgrade" to the N5, it was decent, but lacked something, kinda laggy? Then I bought a Nexus 6, what a great phone, nice feel in the hand. But Barely had it when I got a chance at an LG G4. I got a Korean model F500k, really really liked it, but I hard bricked trying to root. I liked it so much I went on CL and bought a Tmo G4 for a pretty hefty price. Well worth it, it had everything I liked in a phone, removable battery, sdcard, great camera, but I missed the N6 larger screen and would occasionally use the N6 to youtube and browse ect. Thinking, boy if the G4 had the same screen size i'd be my perfect phone.
BAM! LG does V10 goodness.. I'm there, SOLD! I chased down the UPS guy/truck. He didn't want to leave it and I made it home 5mins after I got the tracking update email telling me he missed me and was gonna leave it at a local access point... NOT!!
Ok so if you're coming from an LG G4, this is what I noticed right off. The V10 is not wider, nor thicker and feels lighter in the hand. It doesn't have a curved back and it's barely only 1/4" taller. The Nexus 6 is wider.
First thing I did was load youtube, to see if I could tell the difference, with all this talk about ESS DAC ect. I listened to John Tejada "Beacht".. Um, you have to listen to it to know what I mean. I could tell the difference, everything was "clearer" more of everything, some sounds I couldn't didn't even hear on the G4..
So another thing, I also have a Sony Z3, I really like it's clean sleek design and also wished the G4 was more like it.. Well the V10 pretty much comes close..
I've not owned the V10 more than 45mins, and I can tell you so far it's best of many worlds, for me.
Oh, the V10 is brighter than the G4, both in in my hands with auto brightness enabled.
NOTE: I'll keep adding as I use it more.
EDIT: Did I mention the flat power button is harder to find? I have to feel for it, sometimes going for the camera instead. BUT if you rub your finger on the sensor (I think? Not sure if it does that because it senses I picked it up) it wakes the 2nd screen up and brightens it some.

I really like the V10, but if the ATT model can't be rooted I'll have to stay with my G4
But the change is worth it?

I have an LG G4 (Sprint) and testing out the LG V10 on T-Mobile.
I disagree. It IS wider, it is Taller and it is Heavier. I may return it for another G4.
The G4 was the perfect size phone. The LG V10 is much bigger for a .2" more of screen. I hardly notice the difference in screen size.
It seems snappier. I like the secondary screen but you lose the notification LED. The notification LED was never very reliable for the G4. Seemed to always be blinking for something even if nothing came in.
The V10 is Very slick to hold. And I never use cases.

Uh. you realize the ESS DAC does not work on youtube, right?

I can tell the difference.
Playing with 192kbps ogg. V10 sounds more transparent than other counterparts (G4 and Z Ultra).
However, the speaker isn't loud as G4 (G4 has the best sounding speaker hands down).
Battery is barely the same under my usage.

Lol I love this post op. Great story telling

I have similar phone tastes as I had a g4 and an xperia z3. I'm worried the v10 will be too large but have to make it to a store to see it in person. Thanks for the info

I'm using one of my T-Mo V10's on AT&T. Works fine, rooted, TWRP'd. :good::laugh:
A huge improvement on the G4 in smoothness/snappiness. 4GB RAM? Awesomeness. Qi cover on the way from China.

Really? Well when I plugged in my head phones, a box came up asking me to go to settings. I actually just scrolled notifications down and turned it on. Regardless with it on or off, it sounds better than my LG G4 IMO (In My Opinion).

I agree if your grip is light.. The V10 can feel slippery. But it has plenty of grippy surfaces, if you tighten your grip just slightly you stop the phone from slipping easy.
Here is the compare sheet on the Tmo G4 and V10 http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=pdacomparer&id1=8059&id2=9224

I had g4 for 5 days before I learned of the v10(such a wasted jump) I think the v10 is an upgrade in every way. I was worried about the placement of the speaker I find I rarely cover it up. Only thing I can really say that is better is FFC on the g4. Yes this the dual 5mpxl works well but the I find the 8mpxl to take better pics.

Thinking about making the switch just worried about speaker. Those that made the jump the G4 was one of the loudest speakers I get that but is the v10 living able some say they missing phone calls because they don't hear it etc. Going to go to store to try to get idea. Just want a decent speaker for alarms and speaker phone if driving. Wonder if Qi wireless is better since my G4 no longer is working from what I read its the phone have to get reburb from Tmobile or mail to LG to fix.

I also came from the G4, what I have been looking for is what I got plus a extra screen which is cool but I wanted a 5.7 inch display with removable battery and SDCARD and with the promo this couldn't be better I haven't been this satisfied with a purchase where I don't wonder if I made the right choice since the EVO and I love flagships.

I just got v10 jumping from g4 and i am loving it. Screen is more brighter. Havent use second screen alot but it looks fun.

Don't you get 14 days to return a device?
As for the speaker, the G4 would muffle if I put the phone on it's back. If I cup the back on the G4 it's louder, projecting sound off my hand forward. Same for the v10 if I cup the lower area where the speaker is, it projects the sound forward.

Yes, the DAC is not enabled on youtube. Just the stock music player and a select few music player apps.

Are you me? Had the Z3 and the G4 right now, debating whether or not I should go to the V10 and after looking at it in person at BestBuy I'm absolutely loving the feel and look of it /:

Cup the bottom portion while holding the phone, i'd do the same on the G4, it bounces the sound at you.

Truthfully I've always switched phones as soon as I see something that I deem an upgrade, even if minimal. But I like my Z3, N6 and G4 too much. Pictures, especially low light are just amazing on Z3, waterproof and it's sleek clean design yum! The N6 fits so nice in my hand, ergonomics are awesome, the clean UI/OS so much butter and the 6" amoled screen is Yum! The G4 is just all around superb, best phone I've owned, really used everything on it all the time it's YUm!
But the v10 is like all 3. Like the Z3, I want to keep it naked, just plop on a good glass screen protector and done is YUM!
I think I am just going to have to carry a manbag with slots for these 4 phones
Truthfully though, it's not much more than what the G4 is. Screen is only 0.2" more, the 2nd screen is just fun, the dual fronts more fun, that promo is sex. On a good note the G4 still gets a premium sell price.
It's funny how GOOD this rubber plastic cheap back is. With so many complaints over materials and quality and all that jazz, how simple it is to have everyone like it without settling for it. No complaints about it being a slippery oil and finger print magnet. Nothing about it being creeky.
Someone said it and I agree it's very like something Blackberry would have come out with, maybe...
Note about holding larger phones, keep your pink finger poised under the phone, near the speaker if you hold it on your left. Index on power, Thumb left, middle and ring on right, letting the flab of your fingers overlap the edges. You should not have problems holding one or it slipping outta your hands.

First Impressions: New V10 coming from Nexus 6 (VZW)

My first thoughts after having V10 for couple of hours (most in comparison to Nexus 6, but not all). I didn't need a new phone, but just get bored after a while and upgrade fairly often:
- I like the feel, width is nice and feels noticeably smaller in hand. Don't notice the extra few grams weight and feels balanced in my hand. Like the grippy feel and will probably go without case a while because of "durability". That in itself will make all the difference in size anyway as I used an Incipio case on N6. Not as much to protect it, but I like to set my phone on center console of F150 as I drive, and need a grippy back to keep it from sliding off when stopping/accelerating quickly...V10 fits that need without case and N6 had too slick of a back. The above size comparison is done without case on N6 though.
- Screen not as bright as N6 at comparable settings (40%) sitting in my office. Gonna have to see about that one as I don't want to sacrifice battery too much to get brightness level I like. I really like how the screen looks though. I get around the big icon thing by using Apex so no that's not even an issue.
- Phone is every bit as much, if not more snappy than N6, which is rooted on Marshmallow using beans Pure nexus rom. That gave me great battery life, soo I will update my battery life after a couple of days with this phone.
- Call quality is amazing compared to N6. Not sure if HD/call over VoLTE is reason why or not...I had it disabled on N6 because I couldn't get good call quality in my office due to tower location. Which leads me to this, V10 has much better 4G/LTE signal on VZW than my N6, at least sitting in my office where I was on fringe before, with data and calls hit or miss. Sucky thing about N6 was it would get just enough signal to not switch to 3G, will be interesting to see how that works on V10.
- Plugging in the phone gives me a "fast-charging" notification but doesn't seem to charge as fast as N6, by a decent margin...will have to do a real time comparison to be sure.
- Double tap to wake is faster on V10.
- 2nd screen seems useful to me, either for contacts or favorite apps, as I like to keep my home screen clutter at a minimum. Will see which one makes the grade permanently, hopefully no butt-dialing.
- Camera is pretty nice but I'm not much of a photo buff, but few I have taken around office and outside this afternoon look pretty darn nice.
- Speaker is louder than my N6 for incoming ring tones but kind of tinny. Haven't played music or used speaker phone yet.
- Overall, I like the phone a lot after playing around for a couple of hours, but will be doing a lot more fiddling over the next few days and hope to update this post accordingly.

The LG v10 like the LG G4, disables quick charge when you have the main screen on. Speculation is to save the battery from the added heat lowering it's life expectancy.
The v10 charges slightly faster (2800mA) than the G4 (2200mA) in quick charge mode, and slightly slower than the Moto Nexus 6 (3200mA) in my experiences.
EDIT: Below I included screenshots today while charging using a Tronsmart car charger. 2840mA screen off, 980mA and dropping while screen on.
I use my Samsung adaptive quick charger because it charges noticeably faster than the provided LG quick charger.
I have a tmo nexus 6. I am considering switching. Is it worth it?

I came from the N6. That being said, I have come from a long line of Nexus phones, since the N4, actually. But since this isn't offered through the carriers, I figured I'd try something new. Loving it. Google is offering many way to give a stock experience these days. The launcher and most apps through the play store I mean.
Thanks, does the screen have to be turned to full brightness to compare and operate outside? That's my only fear

I too came from the n6 to the v10 and I have say that v10 is easier to see in the sun without having to turn brightness all the way up.:good:
I guess many of us were getting bored off our Nexus 6's bc I too am a convert to the V10. Most of the pros of the LG V10 were cons of the Nexus 6 and the only thing I miss so far was the dual front facing speakers.
I had an HTC One M7 before the Nexus 6 and I loved that phone. The V10 is winning me over similarly as well. Stock Android is overrated if the manufacturer gets it mostly right and packs in this many features.

i wished i could find a dialer like i had on my htc m8 sense

what a quality phone this is, I was pleasantly surprised.

Ordered this for my partner and have had it a few days now. Just wanted to say how pleased I am with the purchase, considering the price (£260 with 2 years warranty).
I was half expecting it to be kinda slow and clunky, but after installing all our apps, I am happy to say it is more than nippy for its price bracket. The camera is also better than expected, but I had low expectation. the screen is decent, nice and clear with nothing obviously low budget about it.
its not silky smooth, but I would imagine this would be the step up phone for folk coming from the moto G or moto E and compared to early gen versions of those, this is a real bump up.
am on about 2h20m screen on with 60% left, thats with some gps, 40 mins of phone calls and installing and checking more apps.
also, was worried about having no LED notification, but the move to display works well, in fact my partner prefers it as shes not someone who uses her phone constantly.
quick charging is very handy, NFC is a nice touch as I have shown her the uses. gets in the car, touches the tag, it turns on "speak out text messages" from the sony conect app (which works on non sony phones, just format the NFC to xperia tags in the many free apps), turns on bluetooth to connect to the BT car phone and turns up all the volumes to max. taps when home, turns off BT, turns off text read out and sets volumes back down a tad.
so, considering the price, this is a solid 9/10 phone.
good screen, good battery, acceptable speed, nice SD card, NFC, not back photo and video and all for a pretty decent price unlocked!

:good: same feeling as you. The price of the phone makes it unbeatable
First off let me start by saying i have a MXP and i love it so i'm not dissing it.
However The Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 has a better looking screen, much better audio and it has the same performance and they £80 cheaper making it an absolute bargain.
I bought the MXP because of the bigger battery and in the vein hope of better support but i do often wonder if an extra hour of SOT a day was worth the extra £80.
Much prefer both phones over my original Nexus 5.

that phone went completely under my radar! does seem very good for the price.
It's the exact same spec as far as i can gather.
The screen has shattered (18 inch to 2 foot fall in the house off a chair arm) on the wife's idol 3 though and it was only 6 weeks old but i am seeing people on here saying there screens have gone on easily on the MXP as well
Once MM is on both phones i would struggle to pick between them ill be honest
Well, mine's already shipped, so it's comforting to see some positive feedback for it.
The Alcatel seems reasonably comparable though it has a far less powerful main camera. Makes up for it in secondary camera though I guess and has a couple of bells and whistles that the play doesn't like Bluetooth 4.1, but no quick charging facility.
Still comfortable with my purchase thankfully.

Errr... that's okay, I'm happy with my purchase. It's all good.
I must add that the Moto X Play has a superb build quality. I was hoping it would have a good one because my Moto X 2013 was great, too. My LG G3's build quality was a joke compared to this.
I got mine for £100 second hand and really like it, no major weakness in any department

I was about to post the very same, decided to read the previous posts and see this.
But somehow the Camera on my old LG G3 was brilliant, especially when it came to Macro Shots and moving objects in the background.

I must agree, the G3's camera was superior compared to the Play's.
I was expecting a lot worse of an experience.. I was really hesitant to buy the phone but now that I have it I like it a lotttt. Still going to get my Nexus 6P though

Best Buy has 32GB Moto X Pure for $249.99 (NEW) again

Pretty sweet deal! Not just for Best Buy Rewards Elite Members this time, $249.99... several stores I checked have it in stock (Minneapolis/St Paul area).
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/motorol...-phone-unlocked-black/4345700.p?skuId=4345700
Great deal. I would also look at the 64 GB refurbished for $279.95.
So I just walked into a Best Buy, and bought a black model for this price. I don't know if I will use this phone myself or whether I will pass it onto someone in my household, but the value is amazing. The Moto X Pure slaughters my Nexus 5X in almost every spec. Not having a fingerprint reader (which is the only thing that saves the Nexus from a complete embarrassment) is a turn off, but I can deal with that considering it's a 250USD smartphone with a fine screen and most other specs. The screen, the stereo audio speakers, and a healthy headphone gain make it a great device for multimedia consumption too.
I bought one and my GF's dad bought one. The local Best Buy ran out of stock but Fry's price matched. =D
There back at 249 this week!!!
Sent from my XT1575 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Ouch. I ordered one 2 weeks ago from the Motorola website for $299. They still haven't delivered, the status shows it is being built. I thought that was a good deal at $299. I would still be ok if they deliver it pretty soon. I am thinking of just canceling my order with them and taking a trip down to Best Buy.
This deal came at a good time for me. I had been using a Note 5 (64GB) since the beginning of the year and I was looking to sell it and get a less expensive daily driver until I go back to Samsung next year whenever they decide to release the next Note device (if they ever do, which I hope). I was looking around at several unlocked phones and ultimately decided to snatch up this MXPE with that nice price. I've flirted with getting this phone ever since it was released but I've been too addicted to the Note series and that S-Pen. I actually just needed some extra cash for the holidays and I figured I could just sell my Note 5 and use this less expensive phone so I could have a bit of profit.
Coming from AMOLED and haptic navigation buttons it's taking some getting used to but so far I'm enjoying the experience with this phone. These front-facing speakers... holy cow! The standard rubbery back to this phone makes me feel like I can use it regularly without a case, which is nice. I'm feeling confident to use it pretty much anywhere without fear of damaging it, unlike when I was using my Note 5 with its glass and metal design I always felt I needed to protect it.
One thing I really am missing from my Note 5 is having native call recording. I had hoped that when I installed GravityBox it may have offered an option for it like Wanam Xposed. Anyway, this device will suit me just fine until next summer. It's my first Moto device and first unlocked device so pretty interesting experience moving forward.

Glad you are enjoying the phone. I will say that with Moto display, an AMOLED screen would have better on battery. Aside from that, I would still recommend protection. The screen, due to its form factor, is susceptible to cracking from falls. I use cases and never had my screen crack yet, but many others have reported this issue.

Yeah, that AMOLED is just sweet on battery life and those inky blacks are awesome. I'm actually going to try out this bumper they included in the box for a while and see how it feels. I just finally wanted to use something daily without a case and I figured this phone would be it. I'm careful with my phones to begin with but let's see how I feel about this bumper after a few days.
ETA: By the way, is there a way to just turn off Moto display?
Earlier this week BHPhoto had the X Pure 64GB on sale for $269, so I ordered two of them. Had been wanting to go with the LG V20 US996 Unlocked, but at $800 it is a bit too much. So decided to go with the X Pure instead for now.

The LG V20 Appreciation Thread

This phone is so damn good that I thought it deserved a thread for some love. The usual threads are popping up with all the complaints and things, but I am just... enamored with this phone so far. I love it WAY more than my Note 7 (and I was a huge Note 5 fan). My favorites things so far:
-Removable battery is so slick with that button to pop off the back cover!
-Software is really, really nice. Android 7 is amazing and the LG skin doesn't do much of anything to ruin it.
-Fingerprint scanner is blazing fast and accurate and the knock code to wake is great when device is on a flat surface.
-Screen is awesome. I don't care about what the numbers say about color accuracy - it looks phenomenal to my eyes.
-The second screen is something I use so much now that I'd have trouble leaving it. Handy, eye-catching, etc.
-The phone is stunning. I've had many people asking me what it is and commenting on how nice it looks. I'm running it with no case so far because I just can't bring myself to hide this thing.
-IR blaster: as much as I didn't care when I didn't have one, I really love having it now!
-Manual mode on camera: the adjustments you can make to shutter speed and things are awesome, especially since you can see the affect it has live on your screen. I'm learning more about manual photography this way!
-Battery life is incredible. It helps that I was on the V10 for a couple week and that was abysmal, but I think it's been about on par with the Note 7 for me so far.
-Memory card slot with the 256GB card (Thanks, Samsung!).
-Stock launcher is actually usable... I've been a Nova Prime user for years and now I don't think I need it.
-Audio: WOW! My Westone 3's are getting used to their full potential finally. The Note 7 just didn't cut it. Volume is high and powerful, and the audio quality is amazing.
What are you guys' favorite features? Use this thread to generally just bask in the awesomeness of this phone. For me, it's easily the best of 2016 (ESPECIALLY for $672 through Verizon!).
My only complaint is this:
WTH is the stylus?
They see fit to put one on a low-mid range phone, but, omit it from their flagship device?
Seriously, WTH makes these decisions, SMH........
This phone is awesome, but, moves like this just proves once again that the corporate think tanks are tone deaf/have their heads firmly positioned in their backside........
They've kept the removable battery, expandable storage, I-R Blaster, why stop there?
They should up the ante & include a stylus, the timing couldn't be better, perhaps next year.......

Valid point :good: So,I'll try to steer the thread back, since I was the 1st one going the opposite direction:
I'm in agreement w/the OP,this is an all-around great phone.
I actually like LG's U/I,it has a lot of features anyone would like, this is the high points for me,just off the top of my head:
1) Double-Tap to Wake/Sleep
2) Customizable Navigation bar (How cool is that?)
3) Hide the Navigation Bar on a per-app basis
4) Removable Battery/I-R Blaster (Samsung, you're damn fools for leaving these behind)
5) 2nd Display,'nuff said..............
6) Display/Build Quality/Overall Performance are tops, equal or better than anything on the market today.
7) Camera is fast to focus & shoot, pix look great to me,others I've shared with say the same.
I like the second screen better than I did the Edge function on the Note 7. My battery life has been nothing short of phenomenal. I just spent over twenty minutes on the phone... wifi calling... and the battery dropped 1%. I like the bottom firing speaker over the back firing one on the Note, and for my ringing, worn out ears, the bluetooth audio is great. One day I'll have to plug in to check out the DAC.

You can supply your own stylus easy and cheaply. If you want note quality stylus, this phone probably would've been $50 more expensive to get a wacom digitizer. Or maybe more. I'm quite sure LG wouldn't get the economy of scale price on a wacom digitizer or similar to get a similar feature set and experience on this phone. Just get a good high quality capacitive stylus. But I kind of agree. For how big this phone is, I wouldnt have minded a mm thicker at ALL! make room for a stylus similar to note, get rid of the camera hump and some of the paranoia about breaking camera protective lens, and probably a couple hundred extra milliamps on the battery. That easily would've justified the phone's asking price minus the $200 promotion and free bang and Olufsen earphones. With the promotions I bought this going in thinking it would make and excellent portable camera, audio recorder for special events and the DAC is much much better than I thought. So would've been a nice mini tablet with top of the line features to keep in backpack or car. And the features I just mentioned are extra special because of the swappable battery. Adds longevity for the auxiliary uses besides a phone. I'm still up in the air about who wins as the daily driver because the screen is awful at ~9000k. I figured out a way to help is to leave comfort view on low or medium. Quite sure the Kelvin is closer to 6500k. This phone is friggin' awesome though. It's going to be a tough decision. I just took my note4 apart and fixed the GPS issues that plagues so many users. Was actually easy. Plus the note4 has the much preferred AMOLED display not to mention it looks accurate and the camera is still hella good. And can't forget the s-pen. But the V20 blows it out of the water with the loudspeaker, ESS Sabre 9218 DAC coupled with headphones. Kind of glad I'm ha I g this problem. I love the note4 but LG unexpectedly blew me away with the sum of the parts, and some of the parts are top of the line which can't be ignored. Note4 has custom recovery and root also. That's a plus for the note4 also. But if and when the V20 gets root, I have a feeling the V20 will tip the scales with root privileges. Touchwiz has to be xposed to death to get it the way I like it, a couple of other custom touches I added on my own, fingerprint unusable on note4 with case and LG UI isn't all that bad. Much better than all previous phones I've played with. But yeah. Thanks LG. THE V30 needs top tier binned AMOLEDS, wacom digitizer with stylus, keep the same DAC, no camera hump and don't mind an extra mm or two for that, bigger battery. I mean c'mon. This has to be the biggest 5.7" phone out there. What's a couple mm extra thickness to make Samsung and the note series have BETTER competition? And think about it guys. How much extra SOT we would've got with the theming, of which we can pick black themes and this monster probably could've pulled close to 10h SOT on the best of days and probably 6h minimum on the worst. Keep it up and keep adding features. And a damn led. Or make the second screen amoled with option to make a digital notification light.
Just picked up at my local T-Mobile, they only got one and the girl who worked there was pissed that I called to reserve it lol. Quick history on my phones: LG G3, G4, V10, Nexus 6p when my V10 got the boot loop of death.
This V20 is crazy fast and buttery smooth! I'm stunned at the difference to the V10 and it's on par with a new (not loaded up) 6p. Screen is great, 2nd screen is so much better this time around! I'm actually using the stock launcher! I've never used one (Nova) but it's really good!
Overall, it's really a major improvement!

Buying an S7 2017

Is it worth buying an S7 now in mid 2017? What do you guys think? I really have to upgrade to a new device. I passed on OnePlus5 because of the jelly effect, and all sorts of problems. The S7 is not flawless I know that, but I'm curious what recent users, or previous users think about it. Would you recommend buying it? I hope you guys can help me with this. Thanks in advance
ofcourse it is still worth it if you can get it for a decent price. Ill take a s7 over a Oneplus 5 any day due to the fact that you can add a sd card and of its water resistance and i really like the option to go with a non curved screen because they break to easy when dropped and the curved phones have terrible cases.

Yeah I found some decent prices, and they are still offering it in a lot of colours too, so no problem with the availablity. I haven't thought about the curved edges at all, but good point, thank you. I absolutely agree with you there, even though the S7 is slippery because of all that glass finishing. In my opinion the S7 is a great looking phone.
The sd card was another big reason for me, so I hope thats alright, thanks for mentioning it.
Do you have any tips on cases for this phone? Or dbrand skin?
Thanks for your answer tho Sir
I'd say it depends on the variant - if you can grab an exynos model, go for it, but avoid snapdragon variants because of the inferior performance and locked bootloaders. I was torn between the OP5 and an S7 (exynos) and decided to buy another samsung because I could get it for >200€ cheaper.
The performance, display and the camera still perform really well and I like some of the unique touchwiz features, such as always on display etc. Battery life is quite good too-I can get 4h of sot without even trying. Touchwiz is still there but is better than ever with nougat. The good news is that there is plenty of AOSP development going on, so if you don't like touchwiz or tw-based-roms, you have other options to choose from.
So, in my opinion, the exynos variants of s7 are well worth it, even in the mid-2017. Just don't overpay this phone-I got a barely used one for 300€, which I think is a good deal.
What's your budget btw? If money isn't a problem you could wait for a few months and get yourself a pixel 2...
And for the skin question: I can recomend slickwraps because they are cheaper than dbrand and cover the sides of the phone as well. I am using one right now and am in love with it. If you want more customisation options, you might want to go with dbrand though.

I have this Spigen Rugged Armor case, highly recommended
https://www.spigen.com/collections/galaxy-s7/products/galaxy-s7-case-rugged-armor-black
Takes 2 seconds to put on and take off
The S7 is a fine phone, but not exceptional. I had a Xiaomi Mi5 before it and I replaced it because of the rubbish software releases when it moved to Nougat. The Mi5 was lighter and sexier. the S7 is heavy and reliable like a family car but nothing really leaps out. Video is good, Stills camera is remarkably not sharp. S7 comes with the usual lorry load of bloatware. I use one of the battery saving modes.. its no where near as good as the Mi5 was on battery. so there you go, Strong and Stable

I can't afford the Pixel right now, so budget is a deal here. It's hard to tell you how much my budget actually is, because in my country prices could be a bit strange. But about 400 € - 450 €. If you have any other suggestions I welcome it, but I want a somewhat elegentish kind of phone, closer to high end, with great camera and battery life. I also like if a phone is durable, but thats not the most important thing at all. More like to be close to stock android. (I know TouchWiz is there, but it's still more stock then a Huawei for example)
Thanks for the tip on the chipset, I checked it, and it is Exynos Octa core. But I did not know thats a deal breaker so thanks for mentioning it really.

Well, another option in that price range would be an Oneplus 3/3T. Oneplus doesn't sell them anymore, but you can get used ones for cheap. They are far more durable than the s7, battery life is superior and the performance is still top-notch, thanks to close-to-stock os. The only things that you are really missing out on compared to the s7 are camera and wireless charging.
LG G6 has dropped in price significantly as well so that might be another option to consider. I am not a big fan of their UI, but that's just me.
Regards.

Problem is that I don't want to buy an used phone. And the camera is very important for me. But if One Plus would still sell them, I would have selected the 3T, because I am an OP fan really. But like this, that's not an option. I check if I can fimd any new ones, not from the original site. Thats on option.
Thanks tho!

Yeah, it cold be find to find a brand new one right now... In that case, the S7 is probably your best option. You might consider some of the other last-year-flagships as well, such as the HTC 10. Anyway, good luck with your purchace.
It's a pretty nice phone, I just got mine a few months ago.
Keep in mind, my previous phone was a Moto X Pure, also this is the Exynos variant of the S7.
Battery life is about twice as long as what that phone was, I get an average of about 4-6 hours of SOT and with Nougat it should last fine on standby.
Display looks amazing, an AMOLED panel at a 2K resolution in a 5.1 inch phone looks super sharp and nice, gets bright outside.
Speaker pretty much sucks... It gets decently loud, but it's so easily to cover it by accident even with a case on.
The design of the phone is pretty and nice, it holds up very well in 2017. Sure it has big bezels and no curved screen (I have a flat S7), but it's still a solidly built phone that looks beautiful. But I have to say DO NOT USE THIS PHONE WITHOUT A CASE!!! The back is VERY slippery, one drop and that beautiful glass back will get shattered...
Fingerprint scanner is decently fast and accurate, only complaint is that the scanner is in the middle of the home button, I wish it was a concaved home button like on the iPhone.
The camera is very nice, can record 60 FPS at 1080P with video stabilization making your videos look good. Pretty decent in low light, The auto focus is SUPER fast, focuses instantly and the camera snaps pictures in an instant, double pressing for camera is quick and convenient. Front camera pretty much sucks tbh, not really possible to turn off all the dumb beauty features. Tons of camera modes to play around with, not much different in terms of the camera from my Moto X Pure.
Water/dust resistance, I haven't tested this and I don't plan to, basically all I can say is people please only consider this as a failsafe as in don't rely on it, like if your phone falls in water then you should go after it right away and the phone should be fine.... But if it's not, the warranty WILL NOT COVER IT!!! So go swimming at your own risk. Also, you can use the volume buttons to take pictures for underwater photography.
And lastly..... THE SOFTWARE.
Now.... What do I have to say about the infamous Touchwiz coming from stock android? Well, my first phone was an S3 (I had it before the MXP) so I kind of knew what to expect from Touchwiz in terms of features. And I can say this phone is just PACKED with lots of neat software features! I disabled the bloat, decided not to use a theme, used the default launcher, and the phone runs fine and works fine for me. Do I miss stock android? Not really, Touchwiz has a lot of added features that I wish Stock had, and small tweaks/changes that make the experience better in my opinion. Also, there are definitely small hiccups here and there with stutters, but it's nothing too bad tbh, apps open up nice and fast and the phone is always responsive, only thing that really sucks is the usage... RAM usage is kind of high even when your recents are cleared, and the storage available out of the box is kind of low so I would recommend a Micro SD Card if you take lots of pictures (though, those can slow your phone down keep in mind). I got about three software updates (all security) since May of when I got this phone, so updates don't seem to be too bad. But keep in mind it'll be ages until we see Android O on this phone, just a heads up. All in all, Touchwiz has grown up and refined its features instead of including a million features and being laggy (S5 and below), it's now simpler and more streamlined since the S6.
And that's all I have to say about the phone! I hope my review has helped someone out there looking to see if they want to buy a Galaxy S7.
I would say try to get the Exynos variant though if you can, I heard the Snapdragon one is horrible.
Depending on how much you find this phone for, I would definitely recommend it! It has a great display (one of the best), great camera (really can't go wrong with the camera), a beautiful design (no ugly ports for water resistance), good battery life (for the average user), and the software, is not all that bad IMO, though some people do swear against it lol.
