I got a new Z5 yesterday and since then I've been playing around with it and I'm happy so far. Only issue is the battery level doesn't fully charge to 100 after an extended period of charging. Mostly it gets stuck at 97 or 98. I managed to make it reach 100 by turning it off and charging it while it was powered off. Is this normal? I've read that it's some sort of protection from overcharging. Really strange way to do it, though.
I charge mine overnight and it's always been on 100 in the morning
Are you using the supplied charger ?
Mine seems to take an age to go from 97% upwards... upto that point its as you expect, but like above i charge mine overnight and its always 100% in the morning...

yeah I am. guess this is what I need to do. I was waiting for it to climb to 100 so that might have made the time seem longer
I think from my limited experience it does seem to take longer to charge that last 5%, last night it ran out after about 10min it was up to 12% this morning because it ran out last night i charged it up before i came to work and seemed to take an age to go from 97% to 100% talking 15min plus... edit just to add i didn't use the sony charger this morning i used a charging station we have in the kitchen so that might have something to do with it also...

Yeah you are right the last 3-5% are long to charge
Tip. Never go down 15-20% it is better to keep your battery life

Is it possible to overcharge the battery? I ask because when I first got the phone and fully charged it, it would stay on 100% for at least a couple hours (using circle battery widget which reads in increments of 1%) but one night I fell asleep with it plugged into the charger and when I got up it still read 100% but as soon as I unplugged it it went immediately to 99%. I have not yet been able to get it to read 100% unless its connected to the charger. Think I could get the batt replaced under warranty since its only 2-3 weeks old?

Your battery is fine, it is set up so that it will not overcharge. I tried searching for an article that explained how the system is set up but couldnt find it.

I'll look in to that. But what about the battery immediately dropping to 99% when I take it off the charger?

Every android phone I've had has dropped like that as soon as I've taken it off charge, nothing to really worry about.
They do a think called power cycling. It will charge it to 100% then shut off then once it goes back down it will charge it to 100% again. Ill try to find the article. Your battery is fine.

Weird. My SE Xperia X10 didn't do that, it would stay at 100% for at least an hour. I recalibrated my battery a couple days ago, thinking it would remedy this "problem" and after it died on me I charged it back to 100% and took it off the charger at 10pm, set my alarm on it and let it sit overnight. After pressing snooze on my phone 3 times and finally getting up at 630am it still was at 100%! So it's strange to me that this drops to 99% immediately but if it's happening to everyone else I won't worry too much.

Well if I were to judge off that, mine stays at 100% for hours......im going on 7hrs right now. But I use battery circle widget which reads in 1% increments......as soon as my phone comes off the charger it goes straight to 99%......it didnt do that before.

Battery Charging & calibration query
What difference does it make if you charge from empty to 100% in switched off stage and the same in on state? Which is better? How should we calibrate the battery and how often using which app for unrooted MB865 Asia retail? Also if phone dies (switches off) constantly due to insufficient charge does it harm the battery in terms of cells getting destroyed gradually & finally does switching off or switching on the phone while charging have any effect issue on phone or the battery?? Thanks in advance for inputs for all queries.
HI everyone, for the second day I noticed that after I left my N5 to charge overnight it was fairly hot after I took it off the charger. I have been leaving it to charge overnight for months and normally its not even warm since it trickle chargers after hitting 100%. My Nexus was charging right next to it and it was cool when I took that off the charger. It did fully charge and I checked if the phone was maybe not sleeping the entire night but that wasn't the case either. I checked with Current Widget and it was showing that even at 100% it was still taking around 200 mAh power. Usually it shows very minimal charge at 100%. Has this happened to anyone? I know I've read this happening with wireless chargers where it the phone wouldn't even charge, but in this case the phone was charged and it was just using the stock charger.
It also seems like I'm getting the Android OS bug after taking it off the charger. I suppose this might the cause of the entire thing. I'm just worried that it happened two days in a row.
The phone continues charging passed 100%. First it will still show 450mA eventually dropping to 200mA or so as you saw. Eventually true 100% is reached and the battery starts draining 0-10mA while the AC provides the rest.

Thanks, that's what should happen. But it seemed the past two nights it never dropped to 0-10 mah. Which is why I think it was hot in the morning. I just charged it from about 70% to 100% and it did trickle charge this time, so hopefully the issue is solved now. Has this happened to anyone though?
Hi guys, I have my phone a few days now but usually let it charge over night when iam asleep so when i wake up, i just unplug and off i go. But last night the battery was still on 30% so i figured i would wait until today and charge it! I had read it takes a hell of a long time to charge but surprisingly my phone went from 4% to 89% in just under 2 hours! A few minutes later i noticed the led had turned green so i was like "what the hell, no way can it be fully charged that fast" ....... and it wasnt ha it was now on 94% so i have no idea why the led changed to green but it had gone from 4% - 94% pretty fast so i was happy and expected the last 6% to charge pretty quickly . The next time i checked my phone 2h35mins had passed and it was now on 99% but then it just seemed to come to a halt. I would check the phone every 5 mins expecting it had reached 100% but nope. Over 3 hours had passed before it finally hit 100% but the icon beside it read 'still charging' so i decided to leave it until it was fully charged . Well its now 3 hours and 30mins and the phone apparently is still charging lol
How is it possible for it to charge so fast up until it reached over 90% and then slow down DRAMATICALLY ? Is this normal? plus why the hell did the led turn green long before the battery was fully charged?
Always the last 10% takes almost 20 mins to charger whereas 0-90% can charge in an hour or an hour and ten mins.

20 minutes??? Mate it took almost an hour just to go from 99% to 100 lol Whilst on 100 for almost an hour it was still allegedly charging so whilst waiting for it to be fully charged i just lost patience and unplugged it as it was on 100 so figured it must be fully charged even though it was still charging! So in total the phone was plugged in for almost 4 hours and was still charging at 100% when i unplugged it yet it had gone from 4% to 94% in barely over 2 hours lol

That is kinda strange bro. Y don't u calibrate your battery by downloading an app from the play store or let your battery drain to 0% and shut down and then charge from 0-100 and check the time.

Good idea man, might leave it drain completely and see how long it takes to reach full charge! I suspect it should take a long time but it was just weird how not only did the led turn green before it was fully charged but it had charged damn fast up until that point and then just slowed down massively although its not a huge concern as the battery life is fairly good
Coming from a Nexus 4 I have got used to charging my phone every night. The battery on the z3 is a lot better, it comes off the charge at 5am and as I type it is 10pm and the battery is still on 66%.
Would I be doing the battery any harm by putting it on the charge every night? I know it can last me through work tomorrow but I like the have it fully charged for peace of mind.

Lithium Ion batteries last a number of charges, slowly losing the capacity to hold charge as the number of charges increases. Why don't you charge the phone when it needs charging? You can always use stamina mode to keep it going until you get to a charger if you need it to last a few more hours.
I believe its about 350-500 cycles to 80% capacity. Also when your phone says 0% Battery its more like 60% (Don't quote me on that) capacity to prolong battery life.
You should be fine for the life of the device.

TL-DR - charge every night, don't worry about the rest.

you should not be worry about battery problem in xperia because there 2 power saving option normal stamina and ultra stamina so you can take your phone for whole day usage even on ~60% of battery
:good:
so is it ? or is it not bad to charge it every night? even if the battery isn't low
Standby is really good. If you go to sleep at 66%, it will likely be at 66 or 65% when you wake up. You might not need to charge till tomorrow night.

You don't complete a discharge cycle, when you charge with some charge % left so its good to charge it, you are fine.
I charge it every night. It is between 40-60% full when i connect it. If there are some 350-500 charge cycles untill capacity drops to 80% then it is time to upgrade anyway so...
for lithium ion batteries in mobile phones just recharge as it suits your day. Yes, you might be able to preserve some single digit percent over the long run but there won't be any dramatic losses if you don't take special care
This is not a complaint or a problem requiring fixing, but some curiosity. Does anyone else's phone lie about how long till full? Last night it said 10 minutes till full at 96%. I looked away for maybe 2 minutes and it was 100% charged. I thought maybe the battery could need to be drained and recalibrated but no, it drained normally. Took like 5-10 minutes of facebook scrolling to go down maybe 1%. Used it down to 35% today at work listening to spotify and playing games on my breaks. This was probably 96%-35% over almost 10 hours, so I don't think I have a battery problem, it just does not display eta of the charge correctly?
The reasoning behind all this is I'm trying to practice good Li-Ion health and not charge it fully. I usually get it to around 95% and unplug it. I don't charge it all night, and give it a boost on the way into work in the car. Im using the PD 2.0 fast charger it came with at home, but a older Samsung fast charger in the car from the S8 era.
Trust the shown percentage and not the time remaining ?
