[Completed] Soft-bricked my ZenFone 6, proceeded to screw up the recovery too. Requesting help. - XDA Assist

Hello. First of all, let me just say I'm glad I was pointed to this place by a friend, and, while I know asking for help with your first post is simply bad form, I think you guys are my last hope for fixing this phone, so I'll just go ahead an explain.
Alright.
So, yesterday I decided to root my ZenFone 6 (A600CG) for the first time after about 9 months of use. Up until then, I didn't really have any interest in rooting or even unlocking the bootloader, or any knowledge of how to do anything with it at all.
So, I did a quick google search, and found this:
w w w.asus-zenfone.com/2015/05/one-click-root-for-zenfone-series.html
The whole thing felt a bit dodgy, what with the all the bat files and stuff, but I decided to go ahead anyway. And it worked just fine, my phone was rooted. Hooray. Time to go and install stuff I couldn't before, right?
That's when this came in:
w w w.asus-zenfone.com/2015/10/how-to-add-zenmotion-to-your-zenfone.html
So, I did that. What I didn't realize, however, was that my bootloader was still locked. And so I followed the instructions detailed on that tutorial and all, seemed to work. Except when my phone rebooted, all that showed up on the display was a USB symbol. It wouldn't boot. I swear, I nearly shat my pants at that moment. So, I set out to fix that.
I couldn't really find ANY decent tutorial on how to undo the soft-brick for the ZenFone 6 specifically, so what I did first was trying to sideload each and every single rom that ASUS has for the ZenFone 6 on their support page. None of them worked, all of them showed the "failed to verify whole-file signature" error when I tried to have them sideloaded with ADB. So, I followed these:
zenfone-blog.blogspot.com.br/2015/06/guide-how-to-unbrick-asus-zenfone-4-5-6.html
w w w.windroidica.in/2015/07/how-to-revert-back-to-stock.html
First the former, didn't work because the rom wouldn't sideload, then the latter. Now, I'm aware the latter tutorial deals with the ZenFone 5 (for some reason, everything out there regarding these devices is either for the ZenFone 2 or 5, almost nothing can be found regarding the 6), but I figured the two are similar enough that a ZenFone 5 firmware would most likely work on the ZenFone 6, since they're basically the same thing, except for the camera and display size. Well, I was wrong. It kinda worked, though, it was stuck on a bootloop at that point.
So, with my phone stuck on bootloop, instead of coming here for help before, this dumbass here tried to flash the recovery for a custom one (TWRP, in this case). Except the bootloader was locked. So, I tried flashing dnx and ifwi with a bootloader toolkit I found here on XDA-Dev. I don't even know what went wrong, but the bootloader is still apparently locked, fastboot won't flash TWRP on top of the current default recovery, and now the phone is soft-bricked again, with that USB logo appearing whenever it turn the phone on.
Is there any chance at all I can solve this, or should I just throw this in the trash and buy a new one? I'd rather solve it, as I quite like this device, even if ASUS is terrible with their updates.
PS: Sorry about the links, but I feel as though they're necessary to better explain the situation.
EDIT: Seems like the bootloop is back now.
EDIT 2: Finally found a working firmware (2.20.40.11)! Sideloaded it, but I got a message about installing the latest 4.3 version first. I'm assuming it refers to the Android version, and now I'm really not sure whether it worked or not, as the phone still seems to be on a bootloop. Confusing as hell.
EDIT 3: It wasn't even a bootloop, just a longer than normal boot! My phone is running again! Lost all my data, contacts, everything. It's as if I had bought it today. I'm happy, though. Feel free to lock this thread, the issue has been resolved!

Issue resolved, thread closed.

[Q] PLEASE HELP. Soft Bricked My Verizon Galaxy S4.

Someone please please help me. I am in desperate need of a solution. And before I lay out the issue I am having, I would like to thank everyone for taking their time to read through my post and give their input. I truly appreciate it everybody. Much much thanks.
Just as a disclaimer, I've looked all over the internet, everywhere I can possibly find for days on end, and none of what I found worked for me. It feels like I tried everything there could be, and that is why I am coming here. Again, thank you.
So here's a little background information: I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 (SCH-I545). I got the phone over the summer, and as soon as I received the phone I was updated to the apparently dreadful VRUMAE7 update. There afterwards, I tried rooting the phone. I've had rooting experience before with decent success, and never ran into problems like I did. It took awhile for me root my S4, but after awhile I was able to successfully root it. Although, I'm pretty sure I may have done something wrong. You will see why shortly.
So a week or two back, my S4 prompted me to update to the next update. I believe it was Android 4.3 (VRUEMJ7). I was very excited for the update and tried running it. But every time I accepted the update and tried updating, my phone went into Recovery to download the new update and stalled out with an error. Thereafter I would have to reboot the phone to get it working again. After failing to update multiple times, I realized that it is probably because I messed up my root. So without doing much research, I simply tried flashing the stock firmware that came with my phone thinking it should work pretty flawlessly.
I have a Mac OS, so using VmWare Fusion with Windows 7, I downloaded Odin and booted up my phone on Recovery mode, downloaded the stock VRUMAE7 firmware I found online, and began flashing. But Odin threw me a error, so I tried rebooting my phone thinking it would go back to normal. BUT this time, it kept going into recovery mode with a yellow Triangle saying firmware was installed incorrectly, etc. I was so frustrated at this point, thinking that I truly may have bricked my phone.
I began on this long journey of going through all the sources I could find online possible, downloading every type of Verizon S4 firmware I can find, trying every Odin method possible, and spending long long hours of the night biting my fingers at my dreadful fate. I even tried flashing the stock PIT File along with my stock firmware, to see if that would fix it. But no luck. I also tried using a standard windows machine rather than VMware, still with no luck.
I ask you all to please suggest any ideas, thoughts, or inputs you possibly can. I am willing to try anything and everything at this point. Please do help. I appreciate you guys reading through my lengthy question, sorry for that. Just wanted to lay everything out.
Thank you very very much.

Hi there,
it seems an easy problem but do it at your own risk I don't take responsibility of bricked device, etc
so lets go with what you need:
A- Odin [I believe you already have it]
B- stock rom go to this site:
androidayos.com/samsung-galaxy-s4-odin-stock-firmware/
and choose the suitable stock rom based on your Baseband version
C- Drivers installed for your device [if your mac/laptop recognizes your device then skip this step if not google it,download the drivers and install them]
IMPORTANT:Make sure you have 80% or more on battery
after you get these stuff install the device drivers as mentions in C then turn your device off and power it while holding volume up it should take you to download.now open odin and navigate it to the rom which you downloaded from B and flash it .wait for green color to appear and your back to your stock now it should open normally hope that I helped

Help Please - No zip on the device, wiped data ...

Hi guys,
A while ago, I've rooted/unlocked my device in order to install Cyanogenmod, installed PhilZ bootloader. Been running through some versions, never happy with the result - slow response, games not running that well, etc. The last time, I got some new update (can't remember which one though ...) which was the worst nightmare. Without any app running, I thought I was on some Eboda tablet, the cheapest one. Last night I've tried to connect the tablet to my laptop, to put some ebooks on it, without success. Nothing I did convinced the 2 devices to see one another. So, I tried to go back to some previous ROM, boot the device in recovery mode and did a wipe. Forgot that at some point I erased all ROMs from it ... now, I still can't connect to it, so that I can copy some version of ROM, any version, although Windows shows it as installed and connected. Bottom line is that now I got no ROM on the tablet, not installed and also not one that I can install, only got the PhilZ bootloader. Is there any way to get my tablet back or is it bricked ?
You are confusing bootloader and recovery. But as long as you can get to the bootloader *or* to your recovery, it is possible to restore your tablet.
To talk to the bootloader, you need to use fastboot.
To talk to the recovery, you need to use adb.
For more details, read berndblb's comprehensive guide in the General section.

You are right, I have to admit I have not been very thorough the first time I went about this
Thank you very much, I will track down this guide, perhaps I will be able to restore my tablet to some use ...
Hi all,
As it turns out, I had only to push one flashable image (used CM11) and was able to put the tablet back on it's feet. Many thanks to berndblb
Have fun!

Pixel bootloop after I apply custom and official ROM with TWRP

Hello everyone. I'm not proud of myself and I usually, my "google skills" are enough to get me out of trouble but this time it doesn't and this community is my last resort.
I bought a Pixel (not 2, not XL, the first Google Pixel) and soon enough, I wanted to root it. It's the second phone I root, the first one was my Nexus 6 (and before that I jailbreaked my iPhone 4).
Long story short. I'm stuck on a bootloop with 2 screens : 1st screen is the warning that tells your bootloader is unlocked (see img : i.imgur.com/OL2knAo.png )
2st screen is the Google logo (see img i.imgur.com/RpEsddD.png )
A few seconds later, it reboots and starts over.
I ended up here by following this 5 minutes video guide : youtube.com/watch?v=FcK4yIoror8
My problems started when I was done with step 4 (before I could install the Gapps step).
Then I looked around and found a guide I was able to follow step by step with no problem (source : youtube.com/watch?v=CqVhugWJidQ ). Unfortunately, the same issue remains. I get that bootloop.
I'm out of ressources. I don't understand what I did wrong. I follow steps very carefully. I read that my phone isn't bricked as long as I can access it via adb (which I can do). I can still use the adb sideload twrp*.img command and get in TWRP. I tried many images so far and none can get me inside the OS.. Here is the list of the roms I tried :
pa_sailfish-7.1.2-RELEASE-20170530-signed
pa_sailfish-7.2.1-RELEASE-20170720-signed
sailfish-nde63h-factory-43ba5f81
RR-O-v6.0.0-20180313-sailfish-Official
The first 3 gave me the bootloop I talked in previously while the Resurrection Remix (RR) at least gave me some sort of recovery mode as you can see here (i.imgur.com/QJ9mRxD.png) but I still can't get into my phone...
I also tried flash-all.bat and I still have that bootloop after this batch did its thing...
By the way, I see there are tons of Sailfish roms (for Google Pixel). Could it be that my Pixel can only take a specific one? I have no way of guessing if one rom is superior to the other. The only hint I have is the file name..
Also, odds are low but if you live near Montreal are feel like you can help me and do it yourself, I will gladly pay you for your work. Otherwise, I'm open to try anything suggested here that can get me out of this mess.
Thank you very much for your time!
Update 1 : well, I found an answer to my question on reddit.
I was able to restore everything by using the lastest factory image for Pixel 8.1.0 (OPM2.171019.029, Apr 2018). I tried many others before this one (they were earlier releases) with no success.
I have no idea why the lastest worked, but it did. It's a huge relief for me..
Now though, I would still like to root it.. But I am much more scared to try it until I find out what mistep I did... Any idea?
Thank you
If you're bootlooping, sometimes you might be on the wrong slot. Check TWRP to see if you're in Slot A or Slot B. I found in the past that after flashing something, it switches you to Slot B, so if you reboot into System, there's no system there to boot into...

S6 G920F stuck on boot logo

Not sure if my phone is a lost cause and only good as a door stop. My phone at one stage would only display a screen asking me to plug into smart switch to recover the phone so I tried that but smart switch wasn't happening. I downloaded the latest stock rom and installed it successfully via ODIN but now my phone will not get past the boot logo. I can only get into download mode, Any advise on if I can get my phone working again?
Thanks
Andrew

Bro, I've been there and this is why I made an account on xda to see if my s6 (G-920F) can be fixed in any way. Yesterday I had the same thing as you when I tried to re-flash the phone with its proper, latest stock-ROM (UK/EE Nougat 7.0). Given how it hadn't worked, the update attempt through Odin screaming a big "FAIL!" at me, I was afraid I had bricked it completely, so I proceeded to re-install TWRP with Odin by putting the phone in download mode. I wiped the phone again with TWRP and now I'm not sure what I have to do as I am stuck with the UK Nougat bootloader and nothing else on it.
Before this whole ordeal I had rooted the phone and unlocked the bootloader following some instructions from a Youtube video and successfully installed a nighty build of LineageOS, which was buggy as **** (couldn't answer calls, use data, use the camera and a ****ton of apps were just not working). Dumbly enough, I thought I could just remove it through a wipe and put something else back on it but oh was I wrong.
Right now I'd just want to get my phone back to working (like you), as I am out of a job and need to be able to take phone calls with a normal, working phone.
Sorry I couldn't be of much help, but yeah maybe a first step towards fixing it would be to flash TWRP recovery on it and through the terminal, see what bootloader version you have with the command "getprop ro.bootloader". At least you will know the version of the broken bootloader you're experiencing difficulties with and *hopefully* an actual dev from the forums will entertain themselves in trying to solve this noobish puzzle we've created for ourselves.
Seriously, if there is a dev ready to board this crazy adventure with us, please help.
My namesake or username is pretty much a clue to what got me into this position.
I wish it was that simple for me mate, I cant access the recovery menu, I've tried flashing various recovery options but cant boot into any of them. I'm certain I could fix the phone if I could get to recovery. I'm now leaning towards it being a hardware fault with my phone. As you have access to recovery I think you may have more luck with your phone.

Oh dear.
Yeah it does sound like something got deeply ****ed up in this case. I had the luck to somehow get past the smart switch error when the phone died of low battery. As I attached it to the charger I quickly boot it into download mode before the screen would become a bootloop again and that's where I was able to reinstall the latest version of TWRP recovery. After that, I was able to flash a stock ROM of Nougat that didn't have a ****ed up bootloader like I had. Specifically the one from this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/help/device-5-binary-3-s6-sm-g920f-t3706025
by forumber2.
It's the Netherlands stock-ROM. Not sure if you're from the US and the carrier would be wrong with that CSC, but it was a good bet for me. I got my phone back to working normally now.
Worst case scenario I'd say see if you have a phone repair shop nearby and ask them an opinion on what could be wrong. I'm just an amateur like you.
Still, I wish you the best of luck with it. Maybe there's still some hope. :/

Bootloader Unlocking through Downgrade possible?

Hello Guys,
i had bought an Huawei P20 about an year ago. Now you know with all of this "USA-Huawei" Trouble going on, the thought came to my mind that i better start unlocking bootloader and be prepared to flash custom rom if worst come to worst. so far, so good.
now i started looking around if there is an easy method of getting the bootloader unlocked. but oh my, the huawei company is very friendly to us users and say "no, you wont get any unlock code from us anymore". so screw that.
now i want to try some experimental stuff. it looks like this:
my Smartphone has currently the version EML-L29 8.1.0.168(C432). I bought some Credits (i think it is that thing for $4) from DC-Unlocker. Yeah yeah i know, there they say "no support for Huawei P20!!!". But i still want to try. Well i tried, but it doesnt work - what you should expect.
now i read from some other website that there is another way of unlocking it. i only read it diagonal but the one thing i read was the information "unlocking bootloader is only possible till firmware version june 2018". so i jumped to an maaybe interesting conclusion about unlocking the phone with DC-Unlocker or HCU (whatever, i guess maybe both use the same method anyway).
if i do an rollback to the old firmware version *before* June 2018 on the device, wouldnt it be possible to do the unlock? Because the security patches that preventing it unlocked arent on the device then.
So what i have done so far is loading the old firmware version 8.1.0.128(C432). But the source is saying that it is coming from "Asia" but in the next line it reads "Asia, Europe" etc. - do they mean that this version is universal or do i run in trouble if i install one that is having the wrong area?
the next thing that kinda baffles me... all guides are sayin "copy the extracted dload folder to your sd-card". even the p20 guides do that. but.. well you know, the p20 device doesnt even have sd-card support. so how are you intended to use it then? i wonder about that a bit.
i dont think that without unlocked bootloader, flashing an original OTA full update would be impossible. but im not really sure how. there is this shady menu you can reach if you call this strange numbercode. but im very unsure if that will really work out. the phone (it is still a phone without SD-Card-Support) even has the option "apply update from sd-card". so im wondering how this feature they implemented in the original software is intended to use at all. maybe i should push the dload folder on the internal storage? i dunno.
i read about another possibilty of flashing stock roms. they say you can do it per adb command. so no problems would be here, i have adb and the hisuite and all already set. but i have absolutely no idea if that is possible without unlocked bootloader. so the questions arose from my mind are those:
- does an stock rom image from possibly/maybe asia would do any harm to my device like it is getting unbootable or anything like that?
- is it possible to flash an image older android stock rom with methods like this special menu on the device or the adb load?
- do you all think that my plan of downgrading the phone in order to get the bootloader code would work?
i'm looking very forward to your answers )

No. Sorry. There's no solution. Reason: It would appear in this forum within minutes and thousands of people would be happy to unlock their bootloaders. Many Huawei-Owners here on XDA invested a lot of brain power to find a way. Noone succeeded. No bootloader code, no unlock.
If you still want to play around with firmwares, please inform us about any progress.

okay so there are basically no real information. look, i dont expect anyone to say like "oh there is an easy method xy" because i know it doesnt exist on this moment in time.
however i made an percent of an progress, it is more a thing for other interested custom rom modders out there.
i downloaded this update.zip and there are all kinds of howtos on the internet about it. the one thing i did is basically create the dload folder. then i put the extracted update.app in there. i rebooted the phone with power, vol down + vol up. i released the power button after the vibrating. the flashing screen indeed appeared! but something very strange has happened and i have no explanation what have happend.
so the emui updater appeared. there was this emui logo in the middle, the circle building up around it. but then it stopped at 5%. i really got panicked that im about to brick my device. so in an mad attempt i wanted to stop the update and power off the phone. glad i didnt do it. the phone always said if i tried to press the power button long enough "the system will crash if it is powered down". i stopped - but i tried it serveral times to stop.
now the strange thing is.. it stuck relatively long on this screen. but after a while (i guess it was 5-6 minutes) it suddenly got dark. and the battery was at 100%, so it wasnt a faulty battery. i just wondered. the phone - other than i would expect - rebooted. after a short while of the logo flashing (for about an half minute) it finally started. first i didnt have any connect to GSM Network. but after a short while that was okay too. all apps are still there. i looked at "about" and the version is still the same as before.
do someone have any imagination what has happened there? so apparently the phone *does* try to install something on this method, but the method seemed to fail. or is there any knowledge out yet for update logs that are getting generated by this process? i try to find any hint in order to tackle this problem atm.
and one thing is still on my mind.. could it be that the update is already through and i just didnt realized it yet because these other custom files werent changed? i mean that could be an possibility to say the least. anyway, i will try to use hcu now if maybe sth has changed. and i give kingoroot as well a shot if this buddy finds everything about rooting the device. maybe with root rights through exploit i can get further.

It seems you have a couple of questions, pal, I answered to the first one (Bootloader Unlocking through Downgrade possible?). All I said is that it's impossible to unlock the bootloader through a downgrade. If you read all the how-to's you should have noticed that FirmwareFinder doesn'st work anymore since EMUI 9.0. This Information simply means Huawei doesn't allow us to flash updates on our own anymore like we did before. For sure there are some guides how to rollback to Android 8 but even this changes nothing to the bootloader.
Sadly I have no answer to the other questions about the strange behavior, it sounds pretty odd. Never heared something like this. But good luck fixing your phone anyway.
well i found out a couple of things now.
first thing: you know the service menu when you try to apply a zip archive from sd card? well you wont be able to use it UNTIL you use an usb-otg cable and an exFat formatted USB-Stick. Next thing to know is, you have to use the right images. there seem to be an kind of rule how this images are supposed to be and the image i found was from an russian firmware download site it was linked here in the forum in a thread. so i did choose "apply zip from sdcard" and .. IT DOES! the device rebooted, the stick flashed and the flashing process occured! and guys, im back to Version EML-L29 8.1.0.128(C432)! it is clearly stated in the build version view in settings. so.. i guess you *can* roll back even without firmware updater.
so far so good. but lets get back to the problem with the Bootloader. sadly Jan Philipp was totally right.. the bootloader cant be unlocked even in this version with the security patch of 5. may 2018. that is kinda sad. even kingoroot is still no different from before. i guess i have to search now for an way to get the system rooted. however, it must be easier on an earlier security update stage like now instead of the future versions of emui 8.1.
edit: another strange thing i discovered so far is that after this restore.. the play store wasnt able to connect to the google server until i gave permission to a few google processes to calendar and file access (i wonder what that is all about). maybe it has something to do with incompatibilities in the rom versions but now it works just fine as it should).
"unlocking bootloader with exploit is only possible till firmware version june/july 2018" does not apply to 2018's devices with kirin970, kirin980 & kirin710.
You are with kirin970.
So to unlock your kirin970, the only way for now is to wait for 3rd party seller to hypotheticaly start back their dervice:
- In the last 6 months there was only 2 'windows' which lasted 3 or 4 days where you could order your bootloader's unlock code by imei (from 5 to 124 us$).

Google Play services require all permissions, otherwise won't work.
I also been searching on how to unlock the bootloader and found no solution or hope. I guess we are stuck with EMUI forever.
Reply from Huawei:
You can roll back to earlier versions of EMUI software, but you have to roll back one version at a time. However, our earlier phones operate exclusively on Google Mobile Services so removing it would limit the functionality extremely, however, we do have a range of new devices that no longer rely on Google Mobile Services and use Huawei Mobile Services instead - such as our P40 series.
Here are the instructions for rolling back software:
[Rollback Guideline] EMUI 9.1 (Android 9) Rollback to EMUI 9.0 (Android 9) Operation Instruction
EMUI 9.1 (Android 9) can now be rolled back to the official version of EMUI 9.0 (Android 9) using HiSuite, without downloading any intermediate packages. To ensure that the rollback succeeds, read the instructions carefully and perform the steps as instructed.
1. The following are precautions for roll-back.
a. Rolling back to an earlier version will erase all data on your device. Use an SD card, computer, or Cloud storage to back up all important data before rolling back your phone, and make sure all backed up content is complete and effective.
b. Use a computer running a Windows operating system to visit http://consumer.huawei.com/minisite/HiSuite_en/index.html and download the latest version of HiSuite. If HiSuite is installed on your computer, click the version number in the lower left corner of the page to check if it is the latest version. Make sure HiSuite version is 9.1.0.303 _OVE or above.
c. Before rolling back the phone, make sure your phone has not been upgraded using non-official updates. Otherwise, the roll-back may fail and unknown issues may be introduced. If you have used non-official packages to upgrade your phone, it is recommended that you go to an after-sales service center to roll back your phone.
d. Before rolling back your phone, make sure that your phone system has not been unlocked or rooted. If the system has been unlocked or rooted, it is recommended that you go to an after-sales service center to roll back your phone.
e. Before the roll-back, restore the phone to factory settings to make sure there is enough storage space.
f. Make sure the battery level is more than 50%.
