SH-T959V trying to update passed 2.3.6 - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hi guys I have an old phone that I am playing with and after I updated it to 2.3.6GB all stock in Odin I started reading about the possibility of going to ICS and further. So I installed a modified kernel with v.5 CWM and tried to install different ICS roms. In recovery I cannot install anything .zip it aborts. I cannot do an update.zip I tried stock kernels, I rooted but cannot get to flash in recovery. I read it my be the CWM having issues that can be fixed. I formatted my SD card with Minitool and added a EXT3 partition. I know Rom Manager doesn't work well with this phone or GB or whatever so cannot update CWM to the v.6.0.4.4 that some require. that I cannot install in recovery no matter what combination of tricks I try. So any help would be appreciated thanks in advance.

This is what has always worked for me:
1. Use Heimdall or Odin to flash stock GB (apparently you've already done this)
2. Use Heimdall to flash AntonX's Basic With A Twist Kernel (you might be able to use Odin or SGS Kernel Flasher (I always use Heimdall)
3. Once Kernel is flashed, you will have CWM recovery and can begin to flash other ROMs.

[Q] CM7 / ICS Flashing issues

I soft bricked my phone playing with ICS, I got a JIG and solved the problem
I can now ODIN back to any version and once rooted I can install any samsung based rom, the problem comes when I try to flash aosp both CM7 and any ICS beta
What happens is I select the zip, it runs a script and the phone reboots, I see the AT&T logo and then it mounts the sd card, it says it can't find the zip file.
I've tried Froyo, Eclair, even gingerbread (I know your not supposed to flash cm7 from gingerbread, I'm just running outta ideas) I have froyo bootloaders, I reinstalled them with heimdal. I've also done a master clear and erased the internal sd card
Does anyone have an idea of why this is happening?
Are you trying to install the zip from ClockworkMod?
Most likely, the rom is incompatible with the flash method you are choosing which bricks your phone. I had this happen to me twice from either flashing a rom the wrong way or just trying to flash the wrong rom all together and killing my system, but I ended up telling AT&T Techs that it happened when I tried upgrading to 2.2 to avoid warranty issues and they replaced my whole device with a refurbished unit =]
However keep in mind that they cannot jig your device and you will have to do that yourself to get your data off your device before you try getting a new one via this method.
Possible Solution:
1. If you can, flash cm7 to your device
2. Flash This ICS rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363760
If you have already tried this then I apologize, but I hope this helps.
Another problem
Ok, everything I see says I should flash from a captivatemtd recovery, but when I install Rom manager and select captivatemtd, it says their are no offical recoveries for it, I'm currently running cognition froyo 2.2 with froyo bootloaders
Does anyone know where I can manually get the captivatemtd CWM? and how do I install it?

I'll go over my method of installing(I've had ZERO issues flashing from/to any ROM)
1. I FTS/MC using Odin 1 Click. My phone build is 1008
2. Root with 1 click root(I have to do steps 2 and 3 because I do not have 3 button recovery)
3. Sideload and install ROM Manager(Rom manager, and CWM update.zip are in the Sideload zip that's attached)
4. Copy CWM Update.zip and ROM to device. Reboot and install CWM
5. Reboot into recovery and install ROM
Odin 1 Click(If you can use it)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12100225/Odin I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.zip
Root 1 Click
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12100225/Root.zip
Sideload Wonder Machine and ROM Manager
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12100225/Sideloading.zip
Edit** What is the build number of your phone?
Here's what you need
Just download this rom
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/get/cm_captivatemtd_full-181.zip
And then watch this video!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBPu-GqM9RE
Flash CM7 using odin
then flash ICS using clockwork mod using the instructions I gave you before.
That's the easiest way I found to do it and that's how I went from stock rom to CM7 rom and then finally to ICS

Tried this to the letter still doesn't work, could it be because of rom manager not finding a recovery for captivatemtd, some pages say I need that recovery but it isn't available in rom manager.
Finnally
Finnally got CM7 installed the problem was I had to do the three button boot into recovery twice, the first time updates clockworkmod to version 5.x
Now to try ICS again, wish me luck
Thanks
Thanks for all the suggestions, the tip in the video about flashing the speedmod kernel did help I think, I've successfully flashed
teamhacksung's ICS Port for Captivate (BUILD 9) again.
A couple notes here:
1 when your flashing cm7 from cwm( NOT 3e RECOVERY THOUGH) you need to flash the. Zip file, then reboot system, IT WILL PROBABLY BOOT LOOP, three button back to recovery and flash again, then while in recovery still flash gapps. Reboot and it will install fine. You should ONLY need to do the two time flash the first time going to cm7.
2. When you go to rom manager and choose manual flash overide from hitting the menu button you will get the unsupported recovery, DON'T WORRY about it and hit ok. Then another popup will come up and choose 3.x and it will work.

cwm recovery pooched?

Hey people.I have a friends sgs4g...Not sure what they did to it,but cwm boots up,but when you flash a rom,it reboots into cwm and says
it cant mount cache/recovery/command,cant mount/cache/recovery logs.
What should I do here?I have sgs2,so this is a little different for me
I would use the Heimdal One-Click for back-to-stock (GB), then the one-click for AntonX kernel (same thread), then you should have a functional phone again (with CWM) and can go from there.
Or one click gremlin remover which will give you stock 2.3.6 with cwmr,& rooted. And no need to flash anything else, unless of course you wanna flash a custom rom
You can find it in the development section of this forum
Also just skip to part 3 of his instructions
well here is the thing..he tried to put on cm9 or miui...he said cm9miui,but I always thought those were two different dev trees?Anyhow,he got it on,it started, then now it just reboots back to recovery...he tried nand recovery, and it just did same. Now he has tmob loaner phone or what not with his original sd card in that phone..doesnt cwm put some file folder on sd once installed? If there is a new empty sd card, can I do what was said above without bricking anything.I had this phone last year, and forgot everything about it,so thanks for the help fellahs
Anything that it puts on the SD card can be deleted/removed/missing...if it needs it ....it will replace it...without issues

3e recovery doesn'twork?

Hey guys, thanks for reading. Here's my issue. My samsung Infuse has root. I put the 3e recovery file in the system-bin as supposed to I have flashed CWM via rom manager Problem is, when I reboot into recovery, there is no reinstall packages. only reboot, install update and wipe/format options. Also, I get the failed signature errors no matter what I do or how many 3e recoveries i try to download and use, it is constantly the same issue..... any ideas? I have followed the procedure to do this down to the letter

are you on gb? the 3e mod doesn't work on gb because the recovery file is in the initramfs. when you see it in the file system that is just where it is mounted but it is actually being held in ram so when you shutdown it is no longer there, instead a new copy of it is loaded into ram from the kernel image. the actual binary is inside the initramfs files that are compressed in the kernel zImage and not accessible with the normal file managers, the only way to change recovery is to edit the kernel zImage files and flash it to the phone. that's not a task for anyone which is why we have odin and heimdall flashable kernels that skip right to cwm recovery. the 3e methods are for froyo only.
i will note that if you have root you can flash a cwm kernel with sgs kernel flasher but the only gb version that can be rooted is rogers stock and needs a version of superoneclick with the zerg rush exploit which uses a usb cord anyway so there is no reason not to use odin or heimdall unless you have already done the rooting.

Ok, thanks for explaining that to me, I've been at this for a couple days now. Yes I am on 2.3.6 is there a way to flash a jelly bean or ICS rom through odin? I have odin and understand it a bit more than heimdall.... where might I find a couple? I'm used to being able to throw a rom on the sd card and away we go!!!!!
I did however download and install a pre-rooted GB for the infuse but no CWM.... so where can I find a odin flashable JB or ICS?
Thanks!!!!!
Actually, my neanderthal mind finally figured out after flashing the pda in odin that the phone was not going to finish restarting on it's own and that I had to boot into recovery and then flash whichever rom I choose from there THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

to get to jb. flash cm9 first.
you may have to do it twice with a factory reset and format system, cache, data in between the first and second flash.
then you can flash jb

i think there is a ics odin package but i never used it. jelly bean is different for the infuse because it is mtd. i don't think odin is capable of flashing mtd roms and if it is the packages would be very different... as similar as ics and jb are they couldn't fit the system files on with jb and had to move over to mtd partitioning. ics was able to fit on the bml partition that existed so it hasn't been converted over.

[Q] P6800 ROM Questions

Recently I hard-bricked my Tab whilst installing a Rom on it (Brick Bug). Now I have a replacement, and it's about time I replaced the HC with something else.
I plan to use the 'Singha ROM ICS P6800DXLP7' ROM and ' Dedraks' GT-P6800' kernel. I'm guessing installation for both is via CWM, but that is how I bricked my tab last time. How can I work around this as to not brick it again? Odin? Which do I install first? Any guidance would really be appreciated!
Thanks
Which cwm you using that cause it to brick?
Share some detail procedure...wipe on stock rom, custom rom, kernel...etc which end with brick?
For now I believe safe atm..
- From stock ICS
- Root with this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1849235
- Install cwm using Mobile Odin
- Boot to cwm recovery
- Flash custom rom and custom kernel
- Reboot recovery NOT reboot system.
- Full wipe and fix permission
- Reboot system to home screen
That what I always do
Here's what works for me
first, d/l CWM to SD card.
then power down.
reboot into download mode ,PC Odin is my install of choice for the roms...
then power down again after the new rom installs and re-boots
re-boot into recovery and choose install zip from SD and choose CWM (which is a temporary install)
dont wipe anything, just choose to install zip and then choose your new kernel.
After kernel (a safe one) installs, then re-boot system.
Ive never bricked this tab or my GN7000 Note
good luck
correct me if im wrong, but as long as you do not factory reset in stock ics recovery you are okay. Right?
Some Note GT 7000 guys reported that they bricked their phablets by copping large files (being on ICS). If this doesn't affect our P6800s, then you are not wrong.
I had installed LQ2 without wiping anything. But had many Screen Offs and Shut Downs, so I considered to risk the clean install.
Did it with Mobile Odin Pro, but first
Ensured that I already have CWM 6.0.0.1
Flashed Dedraks Kernel.
In Mobile Odin chosen "open file..." and then the particular md5 file,
BUT EXCLUDED:
1. Kernel
2. Recovery
Then I selected "wipe" and "clean", crossed my fingers and everything went OK.
Not quite everything, because I lost root, although I am pretty sure that I did not unselect "everroot'.
It was not a big issue. Installed again "root.zip" via CWM recovery.
Its about a week since then and I have nothing to complain.
...
Thanks for the responses guys.
Does this sound safe?:
Flash LQ2 via PC Odin
Root from universal recovery
Flash CWM 6.0.11 via PC Odin
Flash Dedraks Kernel via CWM
Then root again if needed.
Thanks

[Q] Rooting using Custom Kernel Method, what to do next?

Hello XDA,
I have a SGS4G(SGH-T959V). It had Android 2.2.1 before I made any changes. I followed the instructions found on the wiki that describes how to root using the Custom Kernel Method. I flashed using AntonX-Basic_with_a_twist-v1.1.0-OC_UV.jar. After the initial flash, the phone rebooted into a unreadable rainbow screen. I put the phone back into download mode and flashed again but this time with the Flash Bootloaders option enabled. Now the phone does not boot into Android and just hangs on SGS4G logo screen when powered on. I am still able to get into download mode and CWM.
My end goal is to have Android 4.2.2 installed. Do I just need to install a custom GB rom such as Valhalla Black FB Edition while in CWM then finally install a Android 4.2.2 rom using CWM again?
I also forgot to backup the EFS file. Is it still possible to back it up right now or would I have to wait until the phone can boot into Android?
Thanks.
you can hypothetically just download the 4.2.2 rom, and take out the kernel, and flash it using heimdall. Since you now have GB bootloaders, you'll be fine, but flash the kernel, then reboot to recovery, which you'll now be in 6.x.x.x.
Then flash the rom, then reboot to recovery "it might go automatically", then reflash it, then flash the gapps package if necessary...
That should work.

Thanks. I didn't know how to exactly take out the kernel from the 4.2.2 rom and flash it using heimdall. Below is what I did and now I have Android 4.2.2 up and running fine.
1. Followed the STEP BY STEP GUIDE FOR KJ6 HEIMDALL ONE-CLICK. Flashed T959VUVKJ6_STOCK-UVKJ6-One-Click.jar without flashing the bootloaders.
2. I then backed up the EFS folder, rooted using SuperOneClick, and used SGS Kernel Flasher to flash the Twist SGS4G KJ6 Kernel. Guide
3. Rebooted into CWM, wiped data/factory reset, formatted /system, wiped cache, flashed the Android rom, gapps, and fixed permissions.

Great job. Wish there were more of you that actually take the time to read, read, read and then follow directions. There would certainly be more success. Welcom to the SGS4G Family.
