I have a temporary fix for the blurred contact pics issue troubling an assorted flavor of ROMS. This is a temporary but effective fix until Goggle/HTC resolve the issue, if they ever do.
STEP 1: Sync your phone with Google either as is or after a fresh ROM install. Make sure u have downloaded all of your contacts that you need, from the Google servers, to your phone.
STEP 2: Erase all of your contact pics (which should be blurry). Afterwhich make sure u sync with Google again, so that all the pics are erased off of the server as-well & not just the phone alone.
NOTE: In Step 2 we are erasing contact pics ONLY! not the contacts themselves!
STEP 3: Under "Settings" "Data Synchronization" then "Google" uncheck the syncing of Contacts.
STEP 4: Now add your contact pics again
DONE! ENJOY!
PROS:
(1) You now have nice clean & crisp contact pics the way they were meant to be.
(2) Your Gmail & Calendars will still Sync
(3) Your Google contacts will not delete from the google side & you will have them for as long as you don't delete them via PC.
Cons: Contacts added to your phone anytime after this process will not sync with google & will remain on your phone only. Contacts added after this process will be lost after reflash, unless one later adds the contacts manually to Google via PC and web interface, which is easy
I was working on this for long time.
So. To really fix this (not by disabling synchronization of contacts) one must do TWO things:
Step 1. Disable picture compression via proxy from internet provider. Many providers are doing this. Orange and T-Mobile for example. This is killing quality of pictures. In Orange You can ask to enable special APN which is not using proxy (it is called 'VPN' and You must write it instead of default 'internet' APN).
Step 1 improves callers pictures, but not as much as it should be.
Step 2. Ask Google to send pictures from their server properly. Probably someone need to kill somebody and maybe then they will do this...
Or maybe we need special petition ??

This time its not an issue with the providers. Its a know problem related to google and how they are compressing, using thumbnails, then syncing
BUMP!
Hi there,
After finally getting the Android Stock Contacts app on my Desire, I'm finally able to use the "Sync Group" option to only show one group (let's call it "cormie) in the phone book. This is all fine, I have ticked off all other groups and only "cormie" is ticked on. It displays the "cormie" contacts and the contacts on the SIM (I can delete them off it later I guess) but the main objective is to just use the "cormie" contacts and nothing else.
However, when I go to add a new contact and save it, when I sync it to Gmail, the new entry doesn't show up in "cormie" but only in "all contacts" and once the contact is saved on the phone, it doesn't appear in the phone book because I'm only showing "cormie" contacts and it's not there To see the entry I have to go back in and to show all contacts, then I see it.
This puts a great hindrance on the purpose of the Sync Group option. The guy in post 10 here seems to have got it going, but as you can see in my reply, post 11, it's not saving to the desired group for me!
I'd really appreciate if anyone has a solution for this and could explain how to get it working properly. Or is there an alternative contacts program that will do it? Also, if anyone knows how to not display SIM contacts in the phonebook please share too
Any feedback appreciated at all!
Brilliant! I think I got a workaround
When I first started using the phone after rooting it, I selected "contacts" to be the default for all the options and it actually turns out that the Sense "people" app allows you to save a contact to a group even though it doesn't allow you to "sync groups", choosing which groups you want to sync only, so I needed to get the "people" app to be the default for adding contacts.
What I had to do was go to the main menu > settings > applications > manage applications > scroll down to contacts > and press "clear defaults"
This clears "contacts" as being the default for all the phonebook related actions. If you go back to the home screen and click "phone" you can set "contacts" as the default for this, but then when you go to add a new contact in contacts, it will ask what app you want to add a contact with, click set as default and click the "people" app. Now all "add to contact" actions will be carried out using "people" app, here you can select the group you wish to save it to and then it will show up perfectly in the "contacts" "contacts" menu and will be synched correctly to the chosen group on Gmail!
I think, after 18 days of buying it, I'm finally ready to put my normal sim card in the phone and start using it as a phone! Finally!
I realize this is WAY later than the original post, but have any of you found a solution to not being able to add a new contact to the group you want to add it to? I'm using an HTC Hero (cdma) that I Froyoed with aospmod 2.2.1, so I cannot use the htc "people" app - at least I read that. Sorting by groups is mucho importante to me and I find the default contacts app built into aospmod lacking in this area.
Thanks if you even reply to this!
So, this is my dilemma.
1. I have a SIM Card. It has contacts on it. Android automatically recognizes them.
2. I have my contacts saved to Google. Android also automatically recognizes them.
If I go to enter in a name to send a text, it brings a pull-down menu, with duplicates of everyone. One is for SIM, and one is for Google Contacts.
The Contact list IS slow with Google instead of it being saved directly to my phone. I want to save them directly to my phone. If I do so, the "send a text to" list triples, so each name appears three times.
The contact list, I can exclude everything but phone contacts. Is this something I can do in Messaging? Should I give up on Messaging and its many issues and move to Handcent and deal with its own issues?
I check before I go to bed and it is bumped off the main page?? Where are the people who can help at XDA anymore? It seems every topic I post gets pushed away
So... anyone?

Why don't you just go to your contacts page from Gmail on your PC, sort them all out how you want them and then let them automatically sync to your phone?

this is the easiest method!
Go into your contacts, for every contact that has a duplicate, do this:
1. Press Menu Button and select "Edit Contact"
2. When in the edit contact area, press the menu button again
3. Select "Join" and pick the associated duplicate contact.
This worked great for me with all my duplicate Facebook and Google contacts.
Hope that helps.
I've noticed recently, especially with the release of LTE and their SIM card that some people may have difficulty finding the option to delete their SIM card or groups of people.
So if you need to delete say, all of your phone contacts seperate from your sim contacts, or seperate from your google contacts, and visa versa do this:
Steps (this applies to HTC devices):
1. Open "People" application
2. Tap "Menu" button
3. Select "View"
4. Now check the contact list or lists you want to remove from, for example SIM card
5. Hit "Done" (now make sure those are the contacts you want to remove)
6. Tap "Menu" button
7. Select "delete" and then check the contacts you want to remove, or continue with steps to remove all...
8a. Close the keyboard
8b. Tap "Menu" button again
9. Now select, select all or deselect all
10. Now "Delete"
11. No more duplicates, hopefully!
Just remeber to go back to:
People app > Menu > View > and recheck your contact books that you wish to view in the People app.
Tweet if you like it! Enjoy.
Thanks, this really helped me... couldn't find it to save my life.
Hello guys, I switched from IOS to android and I do not regret my decision ... Except: I don't like it, that on android version of whatsapp every incoming photo is saved automatically.
Before you answer me please consider the following: I know that I can deactivate auto-media-download in the whatsapp settings but that is jot what I search. I also know the .nomedia solution, which also fits not my expectations. I just want a IoS-like method with which you can look at the photos and then safe them manually if you want to.
I have a huawei p9 lite device, which is rooted and has xposed framework installed. Thanks a lot for your help.
1. Open the app and go to the main chats screen. From here click on the three vertical dots and then open settings.
2. Now that you're in the settings menu, you need to open Chat Settings and then select the Media auto-download option.
3. From here is you will be presented with three further options to let you decide if you want to download content when you're just using mobile data, connected to a Wi-Fi network or when Roaming. You now need to open and deselect the Image, Audio and Video check boxes from each Mobile Data, Wi-Fi and Roaming options.
That's it. You will be asked whether you want to save a Whatsapp photo, audio or video file to your Android device.
Hope it help
No thats not what I search. On ios you can see the photo and then decide if you want to save it or not. But still you can see the photo. With your method I cant see whats on the photos. On ios you can see whats on the photos without saving them...
