Twrp - HTC One A9

Is there any twrp recovery for this phone yet? Or how do I root it

I am also interested in this. Please can someone point me in the right direction? Maybe device is too new right now? Not sure, thanks

Aloha Jay,
I'm also looking daily for TWRP recovery for the A9. I did stumble across this link for rooting, but haven't tried it yet. (http://orlandopython.com/how-to-root-htc-one-a9-guide/). I don't know how reliable this is, maybe someone can chime in if they used it for other devices. I have not gotten my unlocked device from HTC yet, anyways I'm a Verizon subscriber and have to wait for the software availability. I did check the hidden website and the boot loader unlock is there. I have a reliable person waiting for me the ship my device to him for S-off. I'm trying to get everything lined up before the release.
Hope this helps.
Mahalo

Ok interesting but... The bootloader can be unlocked from htc dev site, and when that is done you probably can install supersu from the pc. But I want the twrp and control it better. And s-off to.

Probably won't be long for TWRP, but few people even have the phone at this point

I'm s-off on my unit

Can you please share how you have done this? I've been searching everywhere and can't seem to find a custom recovery let alone s-off the device, lol

Is it shipped s-off, unlocked bootloader and unlocked carrier? I thought it was just the Sim that was unlocked

I have a carrier unit I don't believe they ship that way only the unlocked version

1) TWRP - current issue building twrp is no kernel source is available at this time, so touch functions dont work. If no one else posts a recovery soon, I will.
2) Root - At this time, the only actual way to root the device is the guide i just posted http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-a9/development/root-htc-a9-t3244141

Hi jcase
Thank you for the heads up on rooting the a9. I have a unlocked gsm version of the phone purchased in Europe. Please can you send me the boot image I need in order to root the device. I'll leave all the details below, and please please can you also send me or post a custom recovery as I believe I will need that as per your instructions in order to get this done. Hi jcase
adb shell
cd /dev/block/platform/{something here, depends on your device}/by-name
dd if=boot of=/tmp/boot.img
exit
adb pull boot.img
Little confused here as you have said "something here, depends on your device by-name". In my case being the A9, do I type a9, htc a9 etc after the command? And "dd if=boot of=/tmp/boot.img" do I write that straight after the "device name" or is it one or the other?
Sorry if this is a noob question but never rooted like this before hence the question. Thanks

[Q] One S Dev Phone with root issues

So I bought a One S from craigslist about 2 weeks ago. The guy said it was a dev phone. At the top on the case is a tag of numbers and letters printed on the phone. When I first boot the phone it has a HTC splash screen along with the text
"This build is for development purposes only. Do not distribute outside of HTC without HTC's permission. Failure to comply may lead to legal action."
Booting into the bootloader I get this:
*** LOCKED ***
VLE XC SHIP S-OFF RH
CID-11111111
HBOOT-0.90.0000
RADIO-0.14.31.22_2
OpenDSP-v10.1.0.31.0221

HBOOT
<VOL UP> to previous item
<VOL DOWN> to next item
<POWER> to select item
FASTBOOT

FACTORY RESET
CLEAR STORAGE
SIMLOCK
IMAGE CRC
SHOW BARCODE
Also it came with CWM 5.8.1.5 already installed. I tried to use Hasoon's tool to install a more recent CWM but it wouldn't work.
I tried to unlock the bootloader using the htcdev site and token and that didn't work.
I was able to flash it with the UTB ROM using the existing CWM and it works but I cannot gain root access even though supersu is installed and I add apps to its list.
Any ideas on how to get root access?
Looking at your HBOOT version it seems like the device is on early software. You're already S-OFF, so you can try flashing the official TMO release ROM and follow the guides on XDA to root.

You could talk to the devs in the development section (as soon as you have your 10 posts) und help them to get s-off with providing informations maybe.
yeah man that would be a great idea, PM some and see if you can help them as for getting the bootloader unlocked, Unless HTCdev isnt working, there isnt much else yet.
why does it not work ? what errors does it give ?
hmm seems that I'm lacking some knowledge ^^
Is there any necessesity for unlocking the bootlaoder if the device already has s-off? Thouht that s-off would mean no security and full system access.
S-OFF means the NAND partition is writeable, When its S-ON this partition is locked (Security ON ), so with S-OFF we can customise even further, Flashing Radio.IMGs and lots more,
With unlocked bootloader we can do things like install a recovery and flash Root.
the perfect scenario would to have S-OFF AND Unlocked Bootloader.

nope usually when using an S-OFF tool, such as revolutionary, It will unlock bootloader at the same time..

well it doesn't give me any errors, and says unlock successful, and just acts as if it went ahead and unlocked, but when i boot into the loader it still says locked. weird.

maybe theres a command you can use in adb ? Im not sure..
I know the command to relock is ''fastboot oem lock'' maybe ''fastboot oem unlock'' might do something lol.

1) you mean Sim - unlocked right? In that case it won't get locked even if you update the phone software.
2)First and important step is using the search function and I known its very hard for you but once in a while try using the search function, trust me you won't get tired

Thanks. Unfortunately I don't know how to do that. I guess I'll hold off 4.0.4 for now...
You need to read some more, before running things willy-nilly without the proper research.
I would advise against running the 2.20 RUU. As I already mentioned, it updates the hboot, which robs you of the ability to flash kernels and radios. There is no upside to it, since you can flash the ROM in other ways. Your phone is bootloader unlocked, and has full ability to flash kernels and radios. These are all good things. Don't take a step backward by flashing the 2.20 RUU.
If all you want is to update the ROM to 2.20, just flash the pre-rooted ROM (which will not replace the hboot): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812459
But in fact, these are more recent versions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1789059
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1838135
Ya know, you guys CAN extract the rom.zip from 2.2x ruu and pull each image and flash them individually to get the 2.2x updates and keep your unlocked 1.09 hboot intact. That way you dont have to do the kernal flashing and what not. It will be fully updated, sbl's, radio everything.

Thanks a lot guys. I should have done some research. I bought this phone second hand thinking "unlocked" meant I could use it on other networks --didn't know the previous owner meant he unlocked the bootloader...hahaha...I guess i'll do some research to relock it.

Didn't read a thing I typed, apparently.
No need to relock it. Just run one of the stock rooted or custom ROMs in Development. Flash a new radio if you want.
I'm sorry, i really don't know how to do any of those stuff...
I just got the phone a couple of days ago and i am still waiting on my t-mobile non-gba micro sim that i ordered online, now im really not sure anymore if its unlocked to other networks...
I won't know til that sim card gets here, but in the mean time i'll do some reading on all those stuff you mentioned =)

I have a at&t one x I bought last night that is unlocked and I am using on telus.
The phone isn't rooted and is running on android 4.0.3 and HTC sence 4.0
When I try to update it nothing happens. My brother has the same phone thro telus and has received updates. I have went to settings about phoneat&t updates but when I search it does not do nothing .
An AT&T phone won't get the updates unless it's on their network it seems. Just download the ruu

Bump. I unlocked my Rogers One X a while back, because I am planning on selling it. Since that time though, I have run an RUU on it. I no longer have another carrier's SIM card to test, so I just want to know if the unlock is permanent , or if it gets relocked when an RUU or factory reset is run.
The SIM unlock is permanent and will survive any RUU or factory reset.

It's an at&t phone, the at&t CID is blocked by htcdev so you need to get SuperCID before being able to unlock the bootloader. Click the Everything Evita link in my signature and bookmark that thread, it's a resource thread that contains everything you'll ever need. Once you're in that thread navigate to the root section and find the 3.18 root method, this is the only method that'll work with your current firmware. Follow the instructions in that thread and then you can unlock your bootloader.
Once you have an unlocked bootloader you can install TWRP recovery which will allow you to root your stock ROM or install custom ROMs. If you need instructions on this click the How-To Guide For Beginners link in my signature, it's a thread I put together detailing some basic operations. If you have any questions feel free to ask in my Noob Friendly Q&A + General Help thread.
Sent from my One X using Tapatalk
You need to use the correct root method that corresponds to your firmware version in order to change your CID. Trying other methods you randomly Google around for is not going to work.
Use my Index thread, look under "ROOT" and find the method that matches your firmware number (3.18).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
There is not one-click method that works for firmware 3.18. Trying methods that don't match your firmware number is a waste of time.
Also, when asking for help, you need to be absolutely specific as to what you have tried, and what you haven't (including the result such as error messages, etc). If you don't give us specifics, it makes it even harder for us to help you.
Hasoon2000's all-in-one toolkit should work on 3.18. But if this is the one you tried, you haven't told us what happens when you try to use it.
To make it easier, here's the link to the 3.18 root method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2285086
You'll still want to bookmark the Everything Evita thread linked in my signature.

Come on, you of all people shouldn't be giving attitude to this guy telling him he hasn't searched enough. You've asked me multiple questions that could have been answered if you had searched for the answer, including how to unlock your bootloader, that's kinda like the pot calling the kettle black.
It's easy for you to say unlocking the bootloader is an easy process once you've done it. The fact is that it isn't that simple for someone who is unaware that there are different methods for different firmware versions.

Ok I had the same issue several months ago. I have AT&t One x as well. I noticed I could unlock the bootloader and S-OFF when my phone was carrier unlocked. I used the roadrunner method I believe (it's been awhile). I am certain Timaaaa knows what he is saying, but if you can't find a solution, that may be your other answer as well. Worked for me.
Roadrunner? I don't think such a method exists for this device. You can't get s-off without root, you can't get root without an unlocked bootloader, you can get an unlocked bootloader without SuperCID, the only way to get SuperCID on his firmware is to use the 3.18 root method. Hence the reason that's been stated over and over again in this thread. It's the only solution. Carrier unlocking has absolutely nothing to do with the bootloader unlock / root process.

Probably is referring to the Rumrunner s-off method. And yes, carrier (SIM) unlock has nothing to do with bootloader unlock and/or s-off. Probably just a coincidence that that person was able to bootloader unlock after doing SIM unlock.

New to HTC but not XDA ?s about unlocking s-off etc.

I just picked up an HTC One A9 open box off of Amazon that was labeled as an unlocked phone. After receiving it, it is actually an AT&T branded phone. I'm contemplating returning it, but if I can get it to work like a normal unlocked device I'll keep it. I am on AT&T for my service but despise having any carrier branded devices. I'm coming to the A9 from a Nexus 5 and a Moto X Pure. I got sick of the huge size of the MXP and have been back on my Nexus 5 with the last nightly of CM before it shutdown. I picked the A9 for a few specifics. I got it cheap, it has fingerprint sensor, FM radio (I have a farm in rural OK that has poor cell so the FM radio was a big incentive to buy), smaller screen and expandable storage.
So, I've been reading the A9 sub-forum here and have a few questions if anyone could be kind enough to help me out and clear things up.
1. How can I tell if the device I got is carrier unlocked?
2. Can I unlock the bootloader like normal and install other ROMs?
3. Can I download the official HTC Firmware for unlocked/developer A9 and flash it on what appears to by my AT&T device?
4. S-Off, not sure where to begin. Is this required to flash other ROMs, or just to flash other radios, recoveries etc? If I'm going to have to pay $25 for additional software I'll most likely be returning the device.
5. CyanogenMod now Lineage OS - I was running this on my Nexus and want to do the same with the A9, or at least try it out. Is S-Off required to run CM/LineageOS?
6. FM radio - did AT&T remove the app from their device? I just downloaded NextRadio Free Live FM Radio from the app store and it looks to be able to access the FM tuner and work, but I'd prefer the stock HTC app.
Sorry for so many questions, but it looks like the community here on XDA for this device is pretty small with sparse/spread out information and I'm having trouble finding what I need.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

1- you will need another sim card
2- yes. But you will most likely need to s-off and convert to USA unlocked to get newer firmware. USE ONLY 1.57! Do not upgrade to nougat if you would like to use custom roms or have root.
3-yes, but s-off must be purchased from HTTP://www.theroot.ninja
4-yes you will most likely need to pay the $25 utility from the website above.
5-yes, unless you want to run the one from January 2016
6- yes at&t did remove the app BC they are stupid, you also cannot access it from CyanogenMod or lineagos
Also, I think you can still download CyanogenMod from get.cm. if not hmu, I have a copy.
If you want to know how to convert to USA unlocked, I can help you.
Boot logo is not mean the carrier lock, try your sim it may work.
Try booting into download mode and check the cid and mid. And see if they match the AT&T model, Also see if it is s-off or not. Chances are it is a converted phone. If not then follow the steps mentioned above

Thanks for all the info. I was able to unlock the bootloader but it seems like that was fairly pointless. I downloaded the TWRP and when I try to flash from fastboot it is unable to write the new recovery because S-on. So really there is no way to flash custom ROMs even with an unlocked bootloader without S-off. Am I correct? Before I purchase the S-off tool I'm going to contact Amazon and see what they can do since they clearly mislabeled the item listing. Thanks again for the help. I'll let you know if I decide on doing the conversion.

I have an AT&T sim so all is fine. I took the Amazon listing as a fully unlocked device but it looks to just be a AT&T carrier unlocked device.

You don't flash things from fastboot/bootloader. If you want to flash use "ADB reboot download" or boot while holding power+volume down

It is an unlocked phone, but not converted. That is still running the AT&T software and still s-on. Lime I said, the steps are posted above to convert. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask
Did you try to flash recovery in bootloader mode? in my case download mode doesnt work either but when I flash in bootloader mode it went through (without s-off)

Sorry, yes I was in download mode. I wasn't thinking clearly though and was trying to flash recovery before unlocking the bootloader through HTCDev. I got TWRP installed successfully earlier today.

Good news is I was able to contact Amazon support and tell them about the incorrect item listing. I talked them into giving me a 25% refund on my purchase for the mistake. With that credit I got Sunshine purchased and have succesfully installed SuperSU and completed S-OFF on the latest RUU for AT&T. This evening I'll see if I can complete the conversion process and get over to the unlocked/developer RUU.

See above. I forgot to unlock bootloader first. Once I did that I was able to flash via ADB just fine.
Thanks again to everyone for the help.
Cool, and you are so lucky

One thing!! Don't flash the nougat RUU. Just flash the 1.57 RUU if you want to use custom roms, as anything above 1.57 is newer firmware that is not compatible with custom roms at this time and is not downgradeable.

Detailed instructions for S-Off region change

I have recently purchased a dual sim htc u12+ and was hoping someone could provide details to change it to an US Unlocked Model. I have found instructions for older models of the HTC but want to make sure of the all precautions I should take
Have you looked in the Guides, news, discussion sub forum?
Sent from my HTC U12+ using XDA Labs
I did and no one has posted a guide for the conversion process. I understand you need to use sunshine and modify certain settings. I have read people discussing success but not really explaining the details. The fastboot commands needed to change said details, what all settings need to be changed, should a RUU be used immediately, how to use S-off if you can't boot from any mistakes. These are things I'm looking to get answered. I understand things keep changing as new HTC models come out and just want some feedback on what precautions to take. I would gladly send a donation to any user who would take the time to post a handy guide to share with the rest of the community as well.
You need to unlock your Bootloader and root your phone, afterwards use Sunshine to gain S-OFF. Reboot into fastboot and set the cid you'd like to use. Than flash a RUU/Factory image on your phone matches your new cid.

What fastboot command do you use to set the CID? Is changing the MID not necessary? I want to use US Unlocked and according the firmware thread I know that MID: 2Q5520000 and CID: BS_US001 are for US Unlocked. Is this information correct?
Command should be
Code:
fastboot oem writecid
But check your current details by typing
Code:
fastboot getvar all
and post here just to be sure
Thank for you all for the help.

Would you be able to post a write up of how you did this? I'm looking to change my CID so I can finally get Pie but I'm not 100% either. I've done a bunch of other HTC phones before but none with temp S-OFF and that's giving me a little hesitation
