Should I switch from S6 to S6 Edge? - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Cost will be less for the S6 Edge (per month - TMobile Jump on Demand)
Is there a battery performance difference since the Edge has the different screen?
If I do, it will be tomorrow.

Apart from a curved screen what'd be the point?

well you should definitely go for the s6 edge, has slightly bigger battery not really noticeable...for the rest is the same.
but that curved screen is worth it in my opinion...it looks amazing i would say the most beautiful phone on the market, the s6 looks like an s5, s4, just with that glass in the back which looks nice btw.

Mainly lowering the cost of the phone.
When I signed up for Tmobile Jump on demand I got a 32gb S6 for $24/month
If I use one of my jumps I can jump to a 128gb S6 Edge for $17.50/month - 4 times the storage space for roughly $7 less per month (I could go 32GB for $13.50 but I'm already pushing the limits of my 32GB S6 storage wise).
I just wish the US had gotten the Green S6 Edge.

If you can save its worth it, I just don't get how you can save for what is a more expensive model with higher storage too :silly:
It's like saying should I get rid of the Mini because I've been offered a cheaper deal on a Bugatti Veyron

It's a promotion they're running. I also lowered my plan from $140 to $120 for the same amount of data/lines

I did the opposite. Actually had the 32gb edge+ for a few days... Didn't like it at all. Don't take me wrong though, the curved screen is undeniably sexy but I found it to be really uncomfortable, slippery and impractical... Therefore utterly annoying for my everyday usage.
I have big hands so... More often than not, I find myself using the device one-handed... And that was simply a no-go with the edge screen for me... I never had the confidence for managing it with one hand, always felt insecure about it, as I constantly feared it dropping or slipping out my hand...
Sold it. Bought a 64gb flat S6 "duos" (dual sim, version 920fd) instead and never looked back. The first moment I had that flat screen again in my hand, I knew that's what I should've bought in the first place. It just felt right in my hand, I was confident again about managing the device one-handed.
Plus a few others details... Nothing major but, the S6 edge+, curved screen additional functions are absolute gimmicks, it didn't had an IR blaster, which I quite missed from my LG G3 so... And finally I really didn't like how the edge screen distorted text images and the worst of all, THE REFLECTION of the curved screen under direct sunlight... Not cool at all.
But hey! That's just my opinion. I'm sure most users are happy with it as it is... Not for me though.

s7 vs edge decision

hi all , when the s6 came out i took the regular version and never looked back , as i didin't really care for the edge on the device , it seemed gimmicky to me (personal preference)
however with the s7 i'm kinda undecided , i dont really want the edge version , but i do want the larger screen and the larger battery...
any thoughts to help me decide what one to choose this time ?
should i take the plunge and go for the edge and hope i get used to it and like it ,
or stick with the non edge version .
Easy decision. You want the bigger screen & battery life, go for the edge. The display is a gimmick, but it's just an extra feature; it's not going to hurt your experience.

Exactly what I was going to say. The only edge feature I ever used on my S6 was people edge, so the screen was pretty gimmicky. That being said, it is a gorgeous piece of hardware and the edge screen does not detract from the user experience at all.

With that said, how long did it take for the S6 Edge to have root access? T-Mo version?

I don't think it was that long. Tmo generally has unlocked or unlockable bootloaders. I didn't pick mine up right at launch since I was on ATT at that point, but I switched a few months later and there were already plenty of kernels and ROMs available.

The S6 was rooted before launch, but the method trips Knox, T-Mo has unlocked bootloader so it should be fine. But I've read that with 6.0 the chance of rooting without Knox 0x1 is zero.

After handling the S6 Edge, I prefer the standard layout, but I am really pleased that it appears Samsung will be putting the exact same internals in both the S7 and S7 Edge. Other than battery size, which is logical as there is simply more room in the larger device. I've found it disheartening that so many makers have been putting significantly better hardware in phablets than the more traditionally sized flagship smartphones. I would have seriously considered the Nexus 5X had it been simply a physically scaled down version of the 6P, but they crippled it to a point where it isn't worth considering for me.

Very true! I liked the look of the 5x better, and would have gone for it. But the 6p was clearly the one to go for.
As for the S7, I'm undecided too. Personally I also considered the edge, but went for the S6 and never looked back. It just felt so much more premium in the hand to me, and I felt that whilst the edge looked awesome, it was still a gimmick (not unlike the Note with its SPen). I many notes, and I think I barely used the SPen.
But I have to say, the S6 battery was trash (despite charging very quick), so I'm thinking edge this time around for the bigger battery.
Still on the fence. I think I need to see them in action, then decide.

Edge vs S7 Go standard
I went with the note 5 after asking my friend who works as a tech for sprint. He told me that since the edge+ came out [this was only 1 month into the release] that he had seen approximately 4 edge+s' with extensive damage: meaning the restorative process cost was a minimum of $100 per 1 s6 or note 5.... also bear in mind;75% of the time a new device was required because of the digitizer would often malfunction during whatever caused the screen crack e.g, a drop. When i asked why he said "pick it up" it felt jagged on both sides, and without a stylus I'd just prefer the smaller phone or if you must buy the edge, (probably because your edgy to and you like to push your hands gripping skills to the max!) Just know that your probably going to end up needing some stupid case that makes it impossible to get your phone out of your pocket, but it will work. If you go cheap on your case and find the slim fitting one your edgier than I thought you were, and richer to...
My concern is the 'edge' being exposed when the phone drops (never owned one), but with the supposed increase in edge functionality / features on this one, I'm very tempted. The Always On display on the edge (again literally) also looks pretty sweet.
Normal S7 vs. Edge
Simply as said by others. If you want to go for a bigger display, more power in your hand than go for Edge ...
Here are few things which makes S7 differ from edge:
S7 Edge:
5.5 inch display
Exynos / Snapdragon
Curved edges
3500 mAh battery (as rumoured)
Also, i think the normal Galaxy S7 is curved from back while flat on front. But Edge version will have flat back and curved in front. Which make is pretty stylish.

Today Samsung Released a video showing some of s7 features.
specs include an IP68 (or IP67) rating, a 12 MP camera, a 2800 mAh battery, and microSD support.
What I'd like are weight specs. Does the Edge feel like a small boulder in your hand? Very curious about that.

This opens up a whole lot of possibilities. Would be great if we could add Tasker shortcuts etc.
I have a similar feature on my phone via omnirom, extremely useful; changed the way I use my phone making it so much more convenient.
I currently have the S6 edge and sometimes when I'm laying on my back holding the phone, it's almost impossible for me not to accidentally touch one edge of the screen, can't have a proper grip on the phone. The edge features are completely useless and I disabled them 1 month after using the phone (Android 6 might introduce functionality to them though).
If you want more battery life and better aesthetics, go for the S7 edge. If not, I highly recommend the S7.

So which phone to get?

I am replacing my iPhone 5S with a new work phone. I personally carry a Note 5 with me for my personal stuff, but I don't want an iPhone for work any more. Now they allow android devices which have to be purchased directly from AT&T. So, I have waited past my time of replacing it to see the new S7 and G5. I am not wanting to carry two large phones with me (S7 Edge and my Note 5). So one smaller would help. I really wanted them to keep the size of the S6 edge, but that was one thing that made me sad to see.
Any recommendations between them you guys can help with?
Have to be honest, as compared to the s6 line where the edge didn't really provide much of an advantage compared to the regular s6, this time around you're not only getting a nicer design, you're also getting a bigger display and a bigger battery. If you don't want to carry something large then go for the s7 non edge.

I like honesty. Well my work phone is on my belt, and I carry my Note 5 in my pocket. So sizes probably wouldn't be that bad having it on my belt either.
Get the edge. It'll be more expensive by about 80 bucks but you'll enjoy the larger battery for sure. We're looking at 3000mah to 3600mah. Definitely worth the extra 80 bucks.

Anyone switching to Edge?

So I already preordered the S7 because I dont like big phones. I just went to Best Buy though and held an untethered S7 edge and I gotta say it is not nearly as big as you'd think. Somehow it feels really compact and easy to hold. I feel like I kind of want to switch to the Edge but I ordered my S7 really early and don't want to lose my place in line hah! Anyone feel like switching?
I did. same thing for me, I went to best buy today and held the edge. and I said it's just as comfortable as the 7, 6 grams heavier and 600 mah battery more. I canceled my 7.
I did that exact thing last night. Switched to edge from 7
I did the exact opposite - switched from the Edge to the S7 as the Edge felt a bit too big. Great that we have a choice!

Same here. The s7 edge was too similar to s7 for me. Plus I really really didn't like the rounded edges.
Let me join too lol, I've phoned sammy and payed extra for the edge lol, I expected 5.5 inch screen to be much wider,,, but to my surprise, s7 edge is really good and comfy to hold, sammy sent me email to pay the difference by paypal
I've ordered a S7 silver but thinking about getting the Edge instead. Here in Australia we don't have samples to play with but from the dimensions I can see that edge is very compact.
Tried both today at another store, and the weird thing was that there was a significant difference in the picture quality between the two; S7 Edge had a lot more aliasing going on despite the settings being the exact same (going to post a comparison pic later when I have time, because my gf was with me and didn't want to give me enough time to do a complete comparison). Also does anyone know if there is a difference in the DACs/AMPs used as the Edge sounded a bit clearer to my ears (could be placebo as I was switching between the two)? The Edge also seemed a bit smoother for some reason (same apps running in the background). The S7 is definitely more compact, but started second-guessing my decision now.
I went with the edge. Just down to the the fact not tried any if there edge handsets and tried it in store and it felt really nice. I'm moving on from a note 4 just hope I don't regret it as I do love my note.
i, egde colors is great, 5.5 and better battery
I have s6 flat, and now i'm switching to s7 edge. Main reason is battery, i'm a heavy user, and second reason screen size.

Note 5 or S7 Edge?

Hey guys, been a long time XDA user, looking for input. I have never owned a Samsung device so I am completely new here. I came from a LG G4 that I loved it but wireless charging just melts down after 30-60 days and starts refusing to charge wirelessly. After 6 replacements I am here. My last one also had wireless connection issues.
The S7 Edge looked to be the best 1-to-1 match with screen size/features so thats what I had my mind on. Verizon recommended we swap for a different device and offered me a Note 5 64gb (because of no SD storage). So the Note 5 should be here in a few days.
BUT my mind was focused on the S7 Edge so I just went out and bought a S7 Edge on impulse, full price (thinking I would sell the Note 5 to recoop my money).
After seeing and playing with both, now I am kind of torn. The rounded edges actually feel nice to scroll off of. I think the edge apps have already lost my interest. I used to use "Side Bar" as a quick launcher and eventually just stopped using it.
Being new to Samsung, I semi know about the SPen and some of its features. The Note 5 is also the same width as my G4, so size isn't a factor here. In fact because of the rounded edges, the S7 Edge feels narrower/smaller than my LG G4.
Is there really anything the Note 5 can't do that the S7 Edge can? Not really concerned with waterproof or SD card. How is the Note 5 processor? The SD820 is probably a little faster but both are plenty fast IMO.
I'd be interested in hearing any FORs and AGAINSTs. I can keep either device right now, what would you choose?

I ended up going with the S7 Edge because of the faster processor, better low light shots with the camera and larger battery. Surprisingly I like the curved screen witch is something I thought I wouldn't. The two phones are top notch so you can't really go wrong with either. My wife has my Note 5 because I really don't want to let it go and she likes it so it makes little sense to get rid of it. The S-Pen isn't of much use for me but I do like the larger screen and excellent camera. Depending on what the Note 6 turns out to be I might go with that but for now it's the edge for me.
Yeah for me it really boils down to pen and screen. I am kind of leaning toward keeping the Note 5 and returning the 7E. I just didn't know if I would lose any software features like themes or something.
I am finding my palms are also tapping the screen and doing stuff with the S7E when I am typing or browsing. I have a hard time holding it without the screen going crazy. I just switched hands and it posted this and opened my Messenger chat head. Lol.
to me expandable storage is big. I have Note 5, i am waiting for Note 6 with expandable storage to get. I would say the s-pen is good but not a big deal. I do like taking notes with s-pen.
Unless s-pen is a must, i think sd card and water resistant is big deal for everyday use.
32gb has always been fine for a mobile. I complained about no SD storage though, which is why they gave me the 64gb version.
The waterproofing is cool but I don't plan on having it in water. Underwater pics are cool though. I have a hauwei watch for pool fun.

Themes will still be there, the only things you lose are the S-Pen related apps. I see what you mean about the accidental screen taps. I haven't used a case in a couple of days and it's pretty annoying especially when I'm trying to take a picture and open up the gallery. I had to return my Otterbox commuter because it kept ripping off my Zagg screen protectors. Hopefully my new case will be better when I get it tomorrow. It sounds like the Note is a better choice for you. I can always switch with my wife if I want.
I just wanted to chime in about picking between the note 5 and s7 edge. When I bought the note 5 last year, I had to live with no sd card and no removable battery. I can fast charge wireless and hard line as well. I don't really use the s pen as much as before. My previous phone, the note 3 i did. I dunno really, cause my wants and needs are different than everyone else. It some time for me to actually LOVE my new note 5, because I was used to having sdcard/removable battery on the note 3. The build quality is very nice on both phones. All metal, beautiful glass and both have marshnallow. My brother actually has a s7, he just got it a few ago and I bought my note 5 last year November.
I used to be a flash aholic on the note 3. We had recovery, roms and root. So after 2 years of being spoiled, I had to finally let go and move from that kind of want or need. Does that make sense? I realzied that I had give up the flashing game, because of the devices getting more difficult to Root. Specificllay Verizon and the Note series phones. So I when it was time to upgrade last year, I gave up the note 3, decided that I can live with the no sd card and non removable battery and said hello to pure awesome sexiness design of the note 5.
Nowadays, I dont find myself waiting on roms to be dropped. Constantly pressing f5 f5 f5 f5 and refresh to see when it dropped. But that was my choice. No more living with compromises, because a rom worked with this app and sor of didnt work with there other apps. If the s7 edge is constantly on your mind and boggling your curisoity, why not get one? From the few days I was able to play with my brother's s7. It feels nice in the hand, Smooth nice edges, good low light camera fast and snappy processor makes it smooth to operate.
Since I gave up on flashing roms, I just wanted a phone that I can use social media, so I can keep contact with my girlfriend. Facebook, instragram, snapchat, twitter, facebook messnger and facebook videocat oh and make phone calls/send text messages to her as well. I found that my note 5 can do these things with no problem what so ever. Well, sorry for being so long and best of luck on picking between the note 5 and s7 edge.
Yea I am thinking of keeping the note5 and returning the 7E. Memory and waterproofing aren't important to me. The Edge is starting to drive me crazy because you can't hold on to it without touching the edge screen. This causes other inputs to be unresponsive.

I might be returning mine too and go back to the Note 5. I got my new case today and this one is screwing with my screen protector too. This is my 2nd edge and never had this much screen protector problems on the many phones I have had. Totally frustrating. With that said I think you are better off with your Note 5...
I owned a LG G2x that had a curved screen like the Edge7 and remember that the screen protector issue was a big one. I stopped using screen protectors years ago though. With the Edge7 I would be cautious but I never planned on using a SP.

S8 or the S8+

I am coming from the Galaxy S7 Edge, and was convinced I would get the Galaxy S8. I really like the S7E, but occasionally found it just a tad too big in the pocket depending on what pants I wore. Then I walked into Best Buy and saw both phones side by side. After playing around with both for 15 minutes, I have to say I am leaning towards the S8+ now. The S8 just looks too small, while the S8+ seems to be a close match to the S7E. It's almost the same width, but about a quarter inch taller. I'm also thinking the S8+ is going to have a small advantage over the S8 when it comes to battery life. My one hesitation is how tall the S8+ is. By the time I put a case on the S8+, is it going to be too big to pocket?
Anyways, I'm just curious what size you guys/gals are going to get. Please post your response in the poll.
Thanks!

I felt the same way when I walked into a T-Mobile store, I wanted the S8 regular at first, but after seeing them side by side, the regular was just too small. The Plus looked fine to me, maybe because I'm so used to carrying a bigger phone around. Coming from the V20, even with a case on the S8+, I think the size will be comparable.
I've ordered the S8 but am now having the same dilemma. Would the S8+ be too big? I like phones that aren't phablet territory and can be used one handed. The narrower width helps on the S8/+ I suppose.
Is there anywhere in the UK we can actually see the devices?
Second consideration is paying another £90 for an already expensive phone which will only see a 0.5inch difference in screen size and all else staying the same.
I don't even know what a 'normal' price for a flaghship is these days (last I paid was about £360 for the Axon 7 and even looking at a comparison with the S8 it's hard to see £320 of difference in the S8)
I'm a shorter person, smaller hands. The 8+, while nice, was just too big. My wife has the iPhone 6plus and its too big. The 8 should be just right.

I already pre-ordered the S8, which already took me an hour of playing with the phones to end up with that decision. However, I've gone back there a few times since (enough so that the guy working in the Samsung Experience area recognizes me, lawl), and I'm still debating between the two.
I'm getting the S8 no matter what, however... it's the size that driving me up the wall. The more I compare the two, the more I'm leaning towards the S8+, as the S8 is starting to seem small to me (and this is coming from someone with small hands, lawl), but I don't wanna willynilly switch my pre-order like crazy, as I don't wanna be known as that girl who keeps on changing her mind on the phone. XD Even if they're nice to my face, as that's part of the job, I know they're totally judging, haha.
I still have time to sleep on it and it's not like money's an issue with the plans. I wouldn't be paying much more. If Best Buy didn't have their pre-order deal, I would totally get the regular one because I'm not paying $100 more for the larger phone. With the deal, the S8+ is the same price as the regular S8 at full price and only $50 more than the S8 is. Totally muddles everything, haha.

I've ordered the S8 but am now having the same dilemma. Would the S8+ be too big? I like phones that aren't phablet territory and can be used one handed. The narrower width helps on the S8/+ I suppose.

Ditto on this dilemma. I keep going to Best Buy to compare the two and I'm starting to lean towards the S8+. But, I wanna be 100% sure that I wanna switch my pre-order before doing it. I'm coming from the S6, so the S8+ is similar width, but taller. I'm also scared that adding a case will make it too big. Would be soo much easier to decide if they had cases there, but those aren't there yet.

Glad to see I'm not the only crazy one here. I went to Best Buy today to see the phones, but didn't preorder yet. Thinking about going back tomorrow.

I swear I'm usually not THIS indecisive about a phone, haha! XD The hardest thing is USUALLY the color, because up until now, that was the case, but even then, it didn't take an hour to figure that out. Think why I ended up picking the S8 originally to pre-order was because it's similar in size to my S6, but taller and skinnier.
Even then, the S8+ wasn't completely overwhelming for me, but thought the same concern that I think of now, will it be too tall/thick once I add a case to it? I don't plan on adding something like an Otterbox to it, but something like my Spigen Galaxy S6 Case Slim Armor. If they had cases already, this would help sooo much, but nope.
Went to Best Buy today... and I have decided on the s8+. The big screen is overwhelming but it will take little getting used to. I think the deciding factor was the bigger battery.

Oh yeah, so just as an update, I ended up cancelling my S8 pre-order and changed it to the S8+. The more I compared the two, the more I felt that the regular one was a bit small. I've never had a phone as large as this, so this... will be a VERY interesting experience. But, compared to other large phones on the market, this one doesn't feel unwieldy.

I actually meant the big screen isn't overwhelming lol. I think you made the right choice.

Haha, yeah, was wondering what you meant by it being overwhelming. Yeah, I think so too. I still have some concerns with cases, but, regardless, I'm VERY excited for launch day!!!
I went with the S8 as I've had larger phablet phones like the xperia z ultra (one of biggest phones of them all) to the nexus 6 and overall i just prefer phones within 5 to 6 inch range that i can preferably use mostly 1 handed.
S8! For me ist the + to big![emoji16]

I nearly got the S8+, since it's only a tad big taller than my 3T! But thinking logically, I probably have difficulties reaching the top of the phone... The size isn't the problem, its' reaching the screen etc.
But yeah I have ordered it from Argos, Buy it now pay 12 month later

Same here..i ve made 3 trips to best after i ordered the S8 but each time i am trying to convince myself to cancel and order the S8+, i just couldnt.
I couldnt havent pull the notification bar down with one hand..and that fingerprint scanner? Forget about reaching it.
So yea sticking with the S8
A lot of launchers have swipe down gestures to pull down the notification bar, but i'm still sticking with the s8.
Coming from an unwieldy Nexus 6P, I decided to go for the S8 and sacrifice some battery life for one-handed usability.
I have an S8+ on pre-order. There is no way of holding the device until release date in the UK, all stores have a device locked to their stand only. I am thinking it will be okay, I use my phone so much for Sat-nav and when I am at work I don't use my phone that much. I really wanted to go to a much larger screen, it definitely will be coming from an S6 Edge with that being a 5.2 inch screen or whatever. I do worry a little about the fingerprint reader, battery life, and size of the screen. There is 1 handed mode though for a reason to get best of both worlds.
I've gone for the S8 plus. I found the S8 to be a nice size but still fumbled a bit when typing. The plus was that much better size for me. I could also reach the whole thing one handed both front and back.

Preordered the S8+ but after going into the galaxy store in NYC and playing with the phones realized what a lot of other people have said - its just a tad too big. Also, on that bigger phone, the 'infinity' display just seems less impressive. The wow factor is definitely bigger on the smaller unit (if that makes any sense). So I had ATT switch my preorder (without losing my place in line).
