Fastest rom for tab 2 7.0 p3113? - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to make my aging galaxy tab 2 7.0 as fast as possible so what would be a good rom that performs fast and smooth on it? Right now I am using cyanogenmod 11 and it runs very slow in opening apps and menus. Sometimes it performs ok but it feels like it is bogging down.

Performance is indeed terrible with all current ROMs. This is because Trim support is disabled in all current ROMs. This means that performance is normal at first but soon becomes too slow to use. This can take a few weeks of light use or just a few days with intensive use. Simply playing a 3D game becomes impossible, applications start very slowly and run horribly slow, the keyboard is often unresponsive and so on.
The reason for Trim being disabled is that some tablets and phones have a firmware bug in their onboard flash memory/controller combo which can be triggered by Trim. It is possible but very unusual to totally brick the device with no possibility of recovery. Developers have been extremely cautious about this and preferred to disable Trim.
https://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/EMMC_Bugs
The only simple way to get good performance is by using the original Samsung JellyBean firmware which does support Trim. I've had my p3110 for 10 months and have used a few ROMs but I always switched back to Samsung just because the thing becomes genuinely unusable and useless otherwise. I don't have time right now (preparing to move home) but next month I plan to set up a build environment again and make Trim enabled kernels for CM 11, CM 12.1 and maybe current AOSP as I would much prefer to be running a modern, patched OS.
My phone (Note II GT-N7105) is also useless with ROMs because Trim is disabled, but it works great with Samsung KitKat and daily Trim.
btw this issue also affects other devices including from other manufacturers.

Where to find JB? Is it 4.3 then?
Good also for P5100 10,1" screen?

Try out SlimKat

Trim is supported by the kernel in 4.2 but not by the Android OS. If you have root you can run Trimmer (or other similar trim app). For example I have Trimmer do a daily trim on my Tab 2.
From my Tab 2 running rooted 4.2.2:

In Cyanogenmod, and other ROMs for the Tab 2, Trim is disabled in the kernel (and cannot be enabled) so while you can install and even run Trimmer it doesn't do anything, even if you are running Android 4.3 or later.

how do you know it's really working? Is there any command to check that? btw that's very interesting, my tab runs MAG2GB which is not on the afected list so I want to turn this on too Maybe there are some outdated kernels that has this enabled so I'll try that.

The output "# GB trimmed" shows it working. If you perform the same operation on a kernel without Trim support it always shows "0 GB trimmed". The text means something, it's not just coloured pixels
And practical experience confirms this: my Tab 2 running rooted Samsung JB always performs like new. When I ran CM or other ROMs the performance degraded to the point where I couldn't even play a 3D game.
edit: btw my Tab runs EMMC which is on the affected list but I have never had a problem.

trim works with some custom kernels, like next kernel 2.4 so you can use it on 4.4.4 but it works only with ext4 partitions, f2fs is not suported

Thank you for the very detailed and educating post! I noticed in the changelogs for SlimROMS that MMC_CAP_ERASE was re-enabled in Sept 2016 on all ROMS after a fix was found for the brick bug. If I understand correctly, does that mean that flashing newer android versions, such as Slim7 should be just as stable and fast as SlimKat? Or are there still reasons to remain on KitKat (or even original firmware)?

Commonly Asked Questions
Will this trigger Knox?
This firmwares, being official, will NOT increase your binary counter NOR void your warranty.
How to install this?
If you didn't received the update OTA you can use Odin with the official firmwares posted below.
If you don't know how, look at this tutorial - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41072377&postcount=1
Will this update erase my internal memory by default?
No.
But because of upgrading to a newer base it is recommended to wipe data and cache before and after flashing the firmware.
If any problems occur post-install or you want to avoid any from the start, do a factory reset before installing the update. (carefull as it will delete everything on your internal memory!)
Can I install a custom recovery?
Yes.
You can flash your preferred recovery with Odin.
!!! This will trip the KNOX counter !!!
Can I root this firmware?
Yes.
!!! This will trip the KNOX counter!!!
Any changes for the interface?
- updated status bar with white icons;
- when playing music, the music album art is displayed as full-screen background for the lock screen;
- camera shortcut is displayed on the lockscreen (dependent on csc);
-stock keyboard's layout has been improved in landscape orientation;
- more and upgraded emojis for the stock keyboard;
- a new location menu;
- a new default applications menu;
- a new wireless printing menu;
For the complete and detailed changelog refer to the official changelog posted above.
How is the performance?
Pretty much the same.
Any Note III goodies?
The new multiwindow.
Sadly not anything else..
Any bugs?
- Can't connect to GLONASS satellites.
- Note that on the tw based 4.4 firmwares there's no option to switch from dalvik to the art runtime (this is not a bug, Samsung just wanted to avoid any problems (as art is just in an experimental phase) so it removed this option).
- Also in KitKat, applications will no longer be able create, modify, or remove files and folders on your external SD card. As a for-instance, you can no longer use a file manager to copy files from your computer to the SD card over a network. This ability, which has existed since the beginning of Android, has been taken away by Google.
If you have this problems and have root you can try this fix - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2607215
How does it feel? Is it good for a daily driver?
Seems faster when scrolling, UI still lags but less. Smoother transitions.
The smearing seems to be back again.
Definitely good enough for a daily!

Hat down to Moto!
But do you think it's so easy to integrate all s4's functions into the new base?
Moto g's software it's 300mb, s4's is >2gb and it has many more sensors and much more functions.
There's no comparison really.

anyone has problem with the battery time in comparison with jelly bean?
with jelly bean my battery went about 60% only for display, so my S4 can hold the whole day.
now with KK it is 39% for display and more then 10% only for idle state. So i have to charge it on my work.
Not too impressed with the benchmark though. Just tested and I get 100 points more on 4.3.

It's off by just 100 points and you're not impressed already? Mate you do realize that every time you perform benchmarks the score is different at some point with the previous result right? And moreover it was done on a test firmware.

Ugh I can't believe I'm back on a Samsung device, but I couldn't find anything as good for the price. Besides the fact the size imo is better than 7invh tabs. That being said Samsung needs to shoot the software engineers that made there Touchwiz launcher. By far the lagging launcher I've ever used... Of all time... Think my old captivate lagged less. As for aosp support it isn't half bad. Crpalmer has been working his ars off on this and many thanks to him.

Absolutely, huge respect and gratitude are due to Mr Palmer.
The only knock on the Tab Pro I can find, once you remove TW, is the battery life. I'm actually fine with the 7-8 hours of screen on time I average with Slim, but there are tablets that do much better. The screen is,I think, the standout feature. Beautiful and just the right size. Are you thinking of tweaking the kernel any (once you get everything else straight, of course)?

I already did on the build I released here. My personal build is using Linaro 4.9 with Ofast gcc optimizations. Not sure how much more though. I tried to get faux sound but I've been unable to get Ardmore gains to work . You can use apps like TricksterMod to play around with kernel settings

Q&A for [ROM][P900][UNOFFICIAL] Cyanogenmod 11
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer. Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
GPS functionality
The 20141014 build seems to have issues resolving GPS signals versus 20141010 and prior.
I can only "lock" signal under clear skies and no cover with the new build.
Prior builds, rooted TouchScreen builds and the "stock" builds have no issues finding /locking GPS under cover (within reason anyhow, effective Faraday buildings notwithstanding), e.g. while sitting at my desk.
Even as little shelter as my car provides "blocks" signal for the 20141014 build, but not for the others as mentioned above.
Hopefully this can be fixed in the next release along with the vibration bug.
No issues whatsoever with GPS lock on 10/14 build. This is from the bottom floor of a three story brick condo. Agreed that vibe not working though.

With all this great work, providing CM11 on the P900; does that mean we may one day see CM12 for this machine? i.e. will the P900 become a fully supported member of the CM family?
First off thanks for the much needed custom rom! I am very greatfull!
Here are some issues i am having
1 . printing to myhp printer doesnt work properly on cm i tried installing hp app but it dosnt find the printer a lot of the time, and on stock it wrked flawlessly, also on stock when i printed a photo from galary i had both hp print option and a red samsung logo print option that had more capabilities such as greyscale and resizing , now there is no samsung option ,i reallyvlikevthat samsung printing so i tried installing samsung print from playstore but it doesnt connect to the hp printer and its not what was on stock cause there is no red logo option when i print from galary.
2. How do i extract snote from stock nandroid backup to install on cm i tried com.snote blah blah and it didnt work if someone could point me to the apk that would be great
3. Cifs/samba kernal support for mounting windows shares to the local filesystem, Could someone release a kernal supporting cifs or a kernal module i feel it is appropriate function for this tablet , was surprised samsung had not included it for thier " productivity tablet"
Camera is not working on my device (P900).

No. P900 only, must have Exynos CPU.
Newest CM11 Build
Had the latest build and am experiencing no camera functionality and longer boot times. But, the ROM is otherwise stable and smoother than Touch Wiz.
This is on the P900 also.
whats about the battery life?
And could anyone post a antutu score?
thank ya
I am loving my note pro like never before. Thanks to all who have worked on this.
Question: I am only able to connect to my 2.4 ghz part of my router not the 5G speed. I have installed the extra kernel with VT. Should I flash original kernel?
ROM "Flavors"...
I have to agree with bonuzz's "Option #2" - less frequent updates (barring bugfixes), stable versions, maintain good battery life.
If you decide to support only one or two flavors of AOSP ROM, I'd vote for CM, followed by Omni.
While custom kernels are always great - as long as I can set the included kernel to "ondemand", I'm a pretty happy camper.
Thanks!
Hi everybody
Now that my SM-P900 works again (the touchscreen functionality was broken) I would love to be able to play some SNES/N64 ROMs on that huge tablet.
Unfortunately I had to realize that my XBOX 360 Controllers doesn't work with this CM11 version.. after asking Google I found out that it may be caused by the not loaded xpad.ko kernel module.
Is there a way to load it manually? Or do I have to recompile the ROM with the module enabled? If yes, how to do this?

Increase Volume?
Is there any way to increase the volume? The sounds, media, ringtones, etc sound really low even when they are at the maximum level.
Missing Options From Menu
So far loving this rom. However, I can't find the "Stylus Gestures" or "Show icon when using stylus" under the Language and input category. When I search the menu they are list as results, but they are not actually in the menu. Am I missing something?

I have installed CyanogenMod 9.1 on it and its heaven accept that apps don't really support it (obviously) and the few that do run like **** unless I run the older versions. *sigh* if only it was 2012 again.

I recently brought mine back out. I had tried flashing it with Omni 5.1.1 but it was buggy, so I reverted to 4.4.4 (CM11 I think?) and it's working great! I've not bothered installing gapps, instead installing F-Droid. It now serves as my car navigation/media system, sitting on its dock doing it's thing. I overclocked some and it's quite stable, running awesome.

Incidentally, I'm looking to root and flash a second Xoom I have laying around but can't find any good instructions with active download links. Anyone happen to have these?

everything is on Android File host, just go on the site, search for "Motorola Xoom" and start browsing
You are alreay big part partitioned I see, but remember, to switch between bigpart and no bigpart you just flash the bigpart/non bigpart twrp, and format data and all other partitions (accept sdcard of course). not wipe, format to ext4.

Thanks, I will give that a try.
XOOM still in use
I have used my MZ604 on and off over the years. Recently it went into the endless re-boot syndrome which I thought was hardware related as I tripped over the charger wire and bent the flimsy pin in the process. Tried taking it apart, disconnecting the battery, putting it in the freezer, swearing at it - all to no avail. Finally tried the dreaded factory reset which set it to Android 4.1.2 (can’t remember what the version was before) and to my surprise it works perfectly. Apart from having to re-do all the apps it’s a result I wasn’t expecting. Bit like getting an old friend back.
with bigparted cm11 , xoom is quite well . I still use it normally.

[DISCUSSION] Android 10 update review. Should we be quick to update?

Several of us have gotten the Android Q/10 update on our devices.
A quick review would be greatly appreciated from the ones on Android 10.
Please kindly touch on these topics
1. Battery, Screen on Time and Standby.
2. Performance (Launch speed, Ram management, general smoothness of scrolling on menus etc)
3. Camera
4. Any new features. Or redacted features eg. The Screen recorder has disappeared.
5. Benchmarks. Did Samsung sneakily throttle the SOC even more or does it have improved perfomance?
6. Do Goodlock plugins still work? What about the other plugins (Game performance plugins etc)
PS
Miscellaneous
The A20 was never the fastest phone of its price in my opinion. It struggles in some scenarios that cheaper phones wouldn't. I would like to know if this behaviour has changed on Android 10.
eg
1. The share function. It normally takes several seconds to come up. How is it on Android 10?
2. Going to recent apps from a landscape app/game? It usually lags and takes several seconds to figure out what orientation it should be. Did they fix this?
3. Does the Settings app and several other system apps take forever to launch when you compare the launch speeds to similarly priced or even cheaper phones?
4.What about the scrolling experience in between menus? Is it still a laggy mess? The "apps" section especially on the Settings app runs at 2 frames per second! And the device care section too.
5. Auto rotation. It was never instant. It is always a laggy mess on my A20. Go to youtube while your auto rotation is turned on. Turn your phone to Landscape. Does it go to Full screen immediately or does it lag and stutter then do it like on Android 9?
6. OpenGL is crap on Android 9. Is it better on 10? What about Vulkan?
7. What about game load times? I am usually the last to load into game arenas on my A20. Be it Mobile Legends, the newly released Area F2, Call Of Duty mobile, Arena of Valor etc. I am always the last, several seconds after everybody has. Have they fixed this?
Thanks y'all
Happy reviewing
It will really help.

Good thread,
feedback soon:
Firstly the upgrade has enabled me to backup and restore. I lost this ability when I can upgrade to pie U4. This is well worth the effort of upgrading.
Secondly, I can now run Ultimate Q and an overclocked kernel from Minh.
I'm currently running stock Q with Minh kernel.
To do a proper review you would need to have 2 phones side by side: one running stock pie and the other with stock Q.
I'll go back to stock kernel and do my best to strain my 65 year old brain to remember what stock pie was like.
I can also run some benchmarks.
for me i get the official android Q flashing it with odin and i notice the following:
#the battery draining so fast.
#the performance is good but its cause battery draining.
#the camera in android Pie have much options. in pro mod.and the colors much real in Q.
#some new option in sharing and one handmod keyboard and alarm. sounds..the screen recording can be add as it in pie.iam using the same apps in Q and its works.screen show battery will charging.
#the performance is better but its laggy some time and the battery draining fast... i have made some tweaks in vendor build.prop file and still testing..till now i have a good performance and good battery life after many test.but still testing more.i created a topic for stock pie rom in the same tweaks from here
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...ance-build-prop-v1-0-stock-rom-t4073303/page2
- Overall feel it's the same
- New gesture navigation is good
- No screen recording is definitely bad since nice shot is not working anymore
- the privacy features are a plus
- the ui is overall more consistent
- stock apps are mostly the same with a few minor tweaks here and there
- the fingerprint sensor is faster
- i can't say anything about gaming performance since i don't play any graphic intensive game
- battery is still kind of the same
I am currently using a205f with stock q
Stock debloated Rom
Minhker kernel

my mom is still on stock as she still has the phone on warranty. the main reason i would look to upgrade her is because the call recording seems to be slightly more open on Q, so is q atleast better on stock?
