I have two Nexus 5, one is running Lollipop 5.1.1, the other Marshmallow 6.0 (OTA upgrade).
USB Audio out works fine on the Lollipop Nexus 5: I can connect a USB DAC (iBasso D-zero MK2) using an OTG cable and play streaming music with Spotify, Google Play Music and local music files with Rocket Player. Connecting the same USB DAC with the same cable to the Marshmallow Nexus 5 fails: no sound when playing streaming music and local files using the same apps. (The USB Audio Player Pro app works fine on the Marshmallow Nexus 5, though, allowing to play local music files via USB.)
I tried the "Select USB Configuration" setting in Developers Options and set it to "Audio Source", with no success.
Also, the "Disable USB audio routing" setting in Developers Options is disabled.
Do someone have experience with USB Audio on Nexus 5 Marshmallow?
I received a brand new Nexus 9 today and updated it to Lollipop 5.1.1: USB audio worked fine without any special setting.
After update to Marshmallow 6.0: USB audio is gone!
It works with the USB Audio Player Pro app, which only plays your own local files.
This issue does not seem to be device dependant, since it occurs on both Nexus 5 and 9.
Seems to be a drastic regression of 6.0, or a limitation which was not here in Lollipop.
Can somebody test this on Nexus 5X/6P?
I have a Nexus 6 and I am having the same issue. USB connected to Android Auto on my Volkswagen Golf worked perfectly on 5.1.1, now no sound on 6.0 OTA. Same USB cable, only a software update.
Has this been resolved? I have just updated my Shield TV to Marshmallow and also have no sound.
seems like an issue in MM only =/

I'm guessing there is no solution to this yet. I have a Galaxy Note 5 and I have the same exact issue. USB Audio Player Pro works like a charm but nothing else gets a squeak

Hi guys I was wondering if it was possible to get the transformer to output music through the USB ports. I have a set of portable Creative speakers which have great sound and would love to use them with the transformer. They are powered and receive audio from USB
It is very possible, but you'd ave to add the device modules (drivers for the device) to the kernel yourself because it isn't native. I've been trying to get USB headphones working for a while.. :/

Got work usb audio on tf101 with CM10. Just kernel modules for usb audio are not enough to get sound from apps to be routed through the DAC. It's also needed to patch vertana audio driver.
I know it's been a long time but I just got around to rooting my TF101 and actually enjoying it. Has anyone done anything similar with speakers or headphones

Lollipop - Any Improvements?
Has anyone been able to get USB Audio working in a Lollipop ROM given the improvements to USB host?
So far, no luck for me:
KatKiss Lollipop 5.1 #21 ROM
JBL Pebbles USB Speakers connected to the dock
My tablet recognizes there is a USB audio device as the audio stops after connecting.
Also, disabling auto routing of audio to USB audio devices does what it supposed to do - so detection works.
Connecting the headphones out to the aux in of the USB speaker didn't work. Tablet speakers shut off but no sound in the USB speakers.
I could get it to work is powering the speakers from an AC charger and using the tablet headphone out to it.
Also, USB Audio Tester app works in that it can detect the USB device and it was able to play audio out of it (tested via connecting int mic to ext speaker mode and raising the volume bars).
To my understanding from the developer's description, that app uses non-standard interface to output USB audio.
The speakers work fine on Windows and Chrome OS without drivers so I was hoping it was plug and play.
Update:
I did note that I had to raise the in-app playback control volume bars first though to work in USB Audio Tester app.
Also, when connected to a computer and using the Aux In of the speakers, my phones and tablet can play audio.
Based on power draw of a USB charger I connected, the speakers use 0.6W idle and about 1W max.
Therefore, I'm thinking maybe it fails the USB enumeration in Android and the default 100mA is not enough.
Anyone know how to check the USB host enumeration settings?

Since we are talking about USB HOST, maybe it's important to use USB OTG cable, I reckon, as not all USB cables are equal. This has just recently struck me, because I used USB cable that came with my soundcard the other day. Its of great quality, sure, but I'm almost positive it's not OTG. My audiocard is externally powered, so on the other hand it might be just unimportant in my case...
USB Speakers of all sorts have generic DACs in them that require no special drivers and have to work out of the box on any system as long as USB connection and standard USB functionality are intact. Success stories of USB Audio working under Lollipop are rather abundant.
If USB Audio Tester works for you then USB Audio Player PRO should too, those are made by the same guys AFAICT. UAPP is no free app though, costs a sum, and sadly its proprietary driver(yeah, those devs apps use "non-standard interface") only works inside the program, one cannot watch Youtube or MX Player by using that... Compatibility list is on the devs site. My card, E-MU 0404 USB is listed as compatible for only RECORDING, not playback. Heck, I'm absolutely certain, I saw someone on some forum claiming they got same card totally working under UAPP and that wasn't even on Lollipop! Anyway, my trial and error continues...
I don't have a USB OTG cable for the TF101.
Instead, I'm using the keyboard dock that provides two USB ports.
It should be the same thing.
It is very good to hear that USB audio is working for a lot of people on Lollipop.
I've tried testing my speakers on more Android devices - my Nexus 5 and Samsung Galaxy Tab S.
Like the TF101, the speakers are detected as the OS switches over (no more audio out of built in speakers) but no sound out of the speakers themselves.
I'm leaning towards these speakers are not compatible with Android yet.
Sigh - non-standard standards.
I was under the impression that Lollipop supported USB audio devices OS wide, but I haven't been able to get my two Schiit DACs (Modi and Fulla) to work in Google Play Music. I also have a pair of Audioengine A2+ speakers (USB connection) that do work. All three of the devices are detected by USB Audio Tester and are connected via a USB OTG adapter and powered USB hub.
I've reached out to Google and Schiit. So far, only Schiit has responded, but they only said that USB audio may not work with all Android devices and that they didn't have a Nexus 5 to test. I'll update if I get any response from Google.
I haven't been able to find much on the internet about USB audio in Android. Google has two pages (1, 2) on USB audio didn't lead me to anything to help solve the problem, so if anyone is aware of other pages on the topic, let me know. Additionally, the second one only seems to confirm that the Nexus 5 should work since both of the Schiit devices are USB Audio 2.0 compliant. I'm also aware some apps support USB audio, but I need to use Google Play Music since I could only store a fraction of my library locally.
This is actually incredible. Before upgrading to Lollipop on Galaxy S5 I was able to plug my DAC (a Dragonfly 1.2) via USB OTG cable into my Galaxy S5 and enjoy pristine usb audio without a single hint of a problem - all apps working - MX Player, Inbuilt Music App, Poweramp etc - all working perfectly.
Then I upgrade to Lollipop, which is supposed to be great for USB Audio, and it doesn't work any more. At all. I am now back to using an app called USB Audio Player Pro, which allows you to use DAC audio devices to connect to headphones and (thank god!) this still works awesomely, but I was really enjoying all my apps making use of my USB audio device and now that has just been screwed over by the update.
There was so much pleasure in just plugging in a usb audio device into the phone via an OTG cable and everything working great, but now I just fall on my knees and shake my fists in the air bellowing "WWWHHHHYYYYYYY??!!!!"
Has this affected anyone else ? I've restarted, factory reset since the update and googled the crap outta this and all I can find are people saying "Yay! USB Audio functionality has been added with Lollipop".
From my perspective, this appears to be balls.
I'll happily downgrade back to the older android OS if its possible just to get this one happy function back.
Hi I think you should ask your question here instead. There are lots of active people in that forum that will give you some answers and hopefully a solution.
thank you and good luck
I've looked for some kind of app that would let me manage which devices are assigned to the system and to apps, with no luck.
On windows, we're able to assign an external USB audio device, or PCI card, etc as the audio in/out for specific programs, DAWs, while using another device (usually the built-in sound card) for the system sounds or anything that's coming out of the windows kernel.
On my Note Pro 12.2 however, whenever I plug in my class-compliant USB audio interface via OTG, all system sounds and sounds from all apps stops working (doesn't come out of the USB interface either).
I just want to use the USB interface for Audio Evolution, and I CAN get it to work with that app. However, I'd like the android system and all other apps to IGNORE the USB audio device. Ideally it would be great to have some kind of menu where I could select which apps use the USB and which do not, but in the absence of that, is there a way to disable the built-in USB audio driver for Android and just let Audio Evolution use its built-in driver?
Hi.....does the Note Pro don't support Sapa? (Samsung professional Audio). On Android, it works a bit different to windows. In case of Audio Evolution, they have good drivers built in. So,what interface you are connecting? I have a Note 3 and a note 10.1 2014 Lte. And an native instruments komplete audio 6,but a few days before, i bought the brand new IRig UA from IK Multimedia. It's a guitar Interface, but it works also with Audio Evolution, and hold the latency down wow playing Mido instruments inside Audio Evolution or N Track.
If you connect your interface first, and then open the daw app, Android ask for opening this app always, if the usb device will connected.
You can manage this in the App Settings - All Apps......
In case of IRig,you should choose Android drivers on
If Sapa is supported. In notification menu, you can get into the Sapa setup, where you can choose the latency level. It shows a little plug cable in the notification bar.

On my Note 4, when using soundcamp or amplitube, I get the SAPA menu where i can set latency and also tell it that USB devices are only for SAPA enabled apps (so basic system sound doesnt come out of USB interface).
On the Note Pro 12.2 (lollipop isn't out for wifi only version yet) there is a "SAPA monitor" app shown in my list of apps in "currently running" but NOT in app drawer. Soundcamp doesn't work on kitkat. I'm very anxious for lollipop to come out for this device. So far it's only available for snapdragon/LTE version.
It does not work with Lollipop in Pro 12.2. Or if you want it appears in Soundcamp Samsung Galaxy Apps...
And in Note 4 Audio Evolution does not recognize the iRig HDA when I connect the micro USB port. Puff
Hi,
I have one old USB sound card (Steel Series Siberia) and it works fine with Galaxy S7 with stock player or any other player. I've recently got SMSL IDOL and while it gets detected properly on my phone and I also see the device in "Audio Path" option, there's no sound when I use stock player or even pro version or poweramp. I can use ONKYO HF player with some success but it doesn't play some of my music and I am not sure if it will play it even if I purchase app.
I have gone through this and tried everything but nothing is useful so far. Has anyone managed to get USB audio working successfully with any SMSL device ?
My SMSL IDEA works with USB Audio Player PRO.
There is a trial version. http://www.extreamsd.com/index.php/uapp-trial
