Who's bored and wants to help? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note5

Well well...fancy seeing you all here. It's been so long, love what you've done with the place. Glad to be back.
Anyone feel like giving this geezer who just upgraded from sgs4 running sacs old school rom, to this beautiful note 5, a few pointers and a quick once over? Looking to root asap. I see my note downloaded the new ota as soon as I got home w it, but I have not installed.
Would appreciate any help. Thanks
Good to be back :good:

Its pretty simple really.
You have several choices.
The easiest is just to install one of the pre-rooted roms:
Galaxy Note 5 OGD/OI6 Stock Deodexed Roms
MOAR Rom v1.1
If you want to JUST root, there is a thread for that too:
[how to] sprint note 5 root instructions n920p

Awesome, thank you! What i really use root for mainly is the WiFi Hotspot, any tips for that, is it still just an apk to install after root?
Lastly, i use root for a free version of Pandora streaming music...again, without an sd card, im in the woods as far aa using jailbroken apps...thanks!! Edit - nevermind, i see Hotspot is out of the box on this, awesome!
Oh....do i want to,take this update or what? Will it make things harder or worse for me down the road?

All of those pre rooted roms have hacked hotspot included btw.
If you take that ota update your phone is nagging you about, you won't be able to odin back to the original build. It won't hurt to take it, but that is the limitation. If you take it, you will need the latest odin tarball/firmware, currently version oi6, should you need to flash back to stock.

If you want to use Samsung pay don't root. If you don't know what it is and don't care to pay with your phone almost everywhere they take credit cards then by all means i recommend rooting asap.
If i had not found Samsung pay by accident i would be on MOAR right now. I was ready to root and ROM when i read a post about a free charger to set up Samsung pay. I had never even heard of it before getting the phone.

Yeah i looked into spay last night after reading a bit...not my cup of tea, doesnt currently use my bank besides amex, so im much rather have hotspot and save myself $30 a month than use my phone as a wallet...for now at least.
So, what about getting my cracked Pandora app on here...any ideas?

I think you can get your Hotspot up and running with just a couple of apn edits as long as you have your msl. No root required.

Yeah, if all you want is hotspot, root is not needed.
Call/chat with Sprint and get your MSL#.
Dial ##2382#
Click 'edit'
click 'apn settings'
Click the 1st apn listed and scroll down to 'apn type'.
Edit that line from 'default, mms' to 'default, mms, dun'
Hit your back button.
Do the next apn in the list.
back out
reboot
Hotspot is active.

Thx kids, it most certainly does work, got my sml on first try through chat, have my hotspot, and an awesome Pandora now...so, why bother rooting the note these days...any takers on that bone I just dropped?
Sent from my SM-N920P using Tapatalk

I tried to get my msl from Sprint but they wouldn't give it to me. I bought the phone on the payment plan and they won't give it to you until it's paid off. I've tried twice now and was told no by two reps. Anybody else run into that?

What's going on everyone, just got my Note 5 and am loving it...I was wondering if anyone can help me out here but I'm trying to dial ##2382# on my dialer but nothing happens??? Any ideas?

[Q] Both root guides in the sticky say they're outdated. Where is the CURRENT guide?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I thought the root guides would be in the sticky. if both guides are out of date, which one am I supposed to use??
Thanks!
You can still use the hack kit

Just the videos are out dated, but you can still go along with them,. Use bubbys method, should be easier, the video is out of date but you can use it to go along with, if instructions in the video are different than the instructions in the command promt then just do what the command promt says, their not that different. just watch the video a few times before you do it. and dont get in a rush.
Neither ways say they are outdated. The videos might. The dates on the post just mean that was the last time they were updated. If they aren't updated that means that they haven't found any better way of doing it.

This. I did this yesterday, watched the video, ran the program while watching the video with it and I got root, s-off, and everything just fine, all the instructions were the same as the video. Running CM7 Stable now and after some modifications I couldn't be happier. Good luck with your rooting, just follow the instructions exactly and you'll be fine.
Thanks guys! This is the gf's phone and she wants wifi tether so she can use my iPad to watch Desperate Housewives while she's traveling, lol.
She loves Sense and the stock ROM but wants to ditch the bloat. I'm thinking one of the new gingerbread sense roms would do nicely.
How long did this take you guys?

maybe 20 mins?; after I watched the video 3 or 4 times. loading the roms takes the most time. you dont have to root to get free tether, there is a guide in the dev section somewhere.

It took me a bit longer then I expected cause i had some minor problems. But the general time is round 30 min. Took me about an hour.
It too me about 45 minutes total to do everything. But just FYI, if you only want to root for tethering you can get tethering for free on unrooted stock by setting your own VPN settings, search the forums and you'll be able to find a guide easily.

No S5 Root yet -- Frustration

Heyy ya'll, I am so frustrated!! I have bought the Verizon S5 with hopes to get it unlocked soon, but nothing is there!! This is so frustrating -- I signed up with verizon and pay $150/month for 6 gigz with all else unlimited, but the root is one thing that I was looking for. It is frustrating because I probably should've gotten myself a Sprint/Tmobile that was unrooted before even release and it is cheaper!! Ugh!!! By the time unlock happens, a new S series will come out!
Thanks for listening to me! I feel better

You bought a phone without root to begin with. I understand your frustrated but if you wanted a phone with root you should of done homework beforehand. if you wanted the S5 specifically with root, then you probably should switch carriers.
I'm not trying to be rude, its just this post really has no meaning. Your frustrations are just like many, but there is no reason to just start a post on it. Be like a lot of people and be patient. if its going to be rooted one day it will, if you really do not want to wait go an by a phone that is already rooted and not one hoping to eventually be rooted/unlocked because the fact it is just may not happen.
Should of got a developer edition phone...

Yet there are others who have switched and love the M8. Each person is different and should make a decision they feel right with. Many folk are happy with the S5, even without root. For others the lack of root is a deal breaker.
I personally love my M8 as much as I did my S3. I didn't go for the S5 because of Knox and the locked bootloader. That's me though and I would not deign to denigrate anyone simply because their priorities are different than my own.

Just bought my X2, where do I begin?

If all goes well it should be here next week. I would prefer to have a game plan on what I need to do with the device once it gets here.
Things that I would like more info on are:
Step by step guide on setup out of the box
Should I replace the Huawei launcher?
Any do's and don'ts with the device.
What options I have for rooting and if its worth it?
Thanks for any help!

From what I have gathered it will be the 703L. I purchased mine off Amazon and it is listed as the Honor Mediapad X2 with 16GB of Storage and 3GB of RAM in silver.
I can't believe you didn't get more help. I also just bought mine too GEM703L. And would love to know same exact thing. Which SD card do they recommend. Can I take this SIM card from my current AT&T phone and plug it into the X2 or do I have to go to AT&T store.
I've tried to read a lot and take notes on installing google Play, getting messages to work with textra, etc. But I'm just a rookie

Put your AT&T SIM in and it will read your APN settings from the SIM and just work. If you need to root there is a Root Mediapad X2 guide in here that you have to follow to root it, then you can flash TWRP in Fastboot. First you need to unlock the bootloader by sending Huawei an e-mail with some information and wait for them to reply with your unlock code. It's posted in one of these threads. Search this forum and you will find it. This is the root guide thread to follow:

I think I just expected a little different experience with replies, the fact that they were limited is fine. I just have to start playing around with different things myself, and that's ok. I just wanted to dig in and read what people were doing with their phones and learn some tips and tricks. Going outside of main stream channels to purchase a phone is a new thing for me and I was hoping for more of an experience where enthusiasts who are using the same phone would share what they are currently doing.
I agree. I always bought the next best AT&T Android that I researched. Been with the Note series as I like big phones. This will be my first phone bought outside the norm also and I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm going to keep reading and searching. Wish I knew who the best honor x2 tech guy was and Id hire him to give me personal advice and files etc and step by step what to do to get my phone 100% optimized and functional. That would be great.

I'm nervous about bricking phone. So I will start with getting the SIM card working with my network. Getting calls and texts working. Getting play store installed. Getting textra installed. Getting it all on English. Getting buzz launcher going. Getting SD card installed and able to read and write. Getting all of my apps and data transferred over in the easiest manner (currently what I'm researching.. Looks like helium is best option)
Root will be down the line a few days. If I get the nerves up to do it.

You won't brick the phone. If you get stuck in a bootloop you can put the phone in Bootloader Mode and flash the stock rom through Fastboot.

Thoughts on rooting this bad boy

I just got a note 5 on sprint and I love it, but I'm really not sure if I want to root. Every device since I got my Samsung moment has been rooted (htc evo 4g lte, s3,s5 for the day I had it, and then the g3). Anyways, my question is losing Samsung pay worth rooting? I mean I love all the things I can do with root, I just wanna know what everyone's opinion is, so I can weigh pros and cons of rooting.

There is a thread on it here over in the general forum.
You need to use ODIN to flash TWRP and then flash a custom kernel, or just flash TWRP with ODIN and then flash a custom ROM. They are already rooted.

How often does anyone go out without your keys and wallet and drivers license. I mean really, I used it a bunch when I went jogging, but it's not 100%. The first time it didn't work I luckily had my wallet and my regular card swiped just fine. I rooted my phone the second I got home that day.
It's totally up to the user to root if need be. I, however, chose not to root this phone only because everything I needed root for I can accomplish without it whilst keeping Samsung Pay and Android Pay intact. I use the latter more than the previous so root is a no go for me based on that. However, I've tried Samsung Pay a few times and it worked with no issues. You just have to ask yourself what exactly do I need root for? These were my needs for root and the fixes I found to accomplish what I needed without rooting:
Camera Shutter Sound fix( Enforced Stream Silencer app)
Hotspot Mod( APN Settings mod. Need MSL # for this which can be gotten through Sprint Chat)
Ad Remover( AdGuard Premium App)
APK Backups/Restore( App Backup and Restore app)
System UI Backup( Smart Switch on PC)
Bloatware Removal/System App Disabler( Package Disabler Pro)
Add any app to MW( MW- Pen App Enabler Pro)
Themes( Samsung Theme Store)
These can all be achieved without root. More importantly, everything works as it should and when you need it to work without getting the dreaded FC and doing trial and error to fix it. If the Pros outweigh the Cons then do it. If not, don't root.
I honestly don't miss it. I have more time to spend with my family and not trying to find what a developer took out to make a feature of the phone work. I get updates on time without waiting for a rooted rom to be posted. I'm not trolling XDA or any other blog seeing when the next update is to whatever rom I'm using to see if hopefully the issues I had with the rom were addressed with the new build. Do I miss root? Sometimes. But ultimately I'm glad I didn't root. This was my choice. As I said, everyone is different. You have to do what works for you. I love that I have full functionality of my phone and confidence knowing if I try a feature it will work as advertised.
I stayed stock for exactly 4 weeks and used samsung pay a few times a day with 5 different credit cards. I've been rooted for the past 3 months and i do NOT miss samsung pay at all. I reap the benefits of root all day everyday because of the amazing ROM dev @tdunham and the amazing KERNEL dev @UpInTheAir.

Thanks for your insight, is there a bloatware List that you referenced?

No. I usually just remove the stuff I know about like Nascar, Ebay, etc. The system apps I disable are usually like the Calculator, Picasa maybe and a couple other things.
still waiting for my promos to go through, once they do, im gonna root it

Sprint note 5 sm-n920p - remote sim unlock testers needed

Hey guys, I'm trying to test out some software a friend stumbled upon that can unlock the Sprint Note 5. I've already unlocked my Sprint Note 5, which I am using with T-Mobile. I'm trying to see if it can work the unlock over a remote connection before buying myself, as it is very expensive software that also requires a physical dongle to work.
YOU MUST HAVE A DECENT STEADY INTERNET CONNECT AND USING WINDOWS PC!
You must be rooted! ( I have not tried this on a non rooted Note 5 and do not know if it will work. With that said if you're unrooted and one of the few I have time to try this remote unlock with, you proceed at your own risk!)
Please Nandroid or backup your data by whatever means you may use!
Although this will not root your phone or flash anything to your Note 5, you do this at your own risk!
If the remote unlock is unsuccessful, remember this didn't cost you a thing, and if it worked please post to this thread!
I am using a friends licensed software and hardware that he has been kind to let me try, please understand that I cannot do this for everyone that responds and my time is limited! With that said you will get a PM from me instructing you to download the 7zip file below for setup. At the moment, I have time for 5 to 6 quick unlocks! Don't get mad if you're not picked, as it will be random! Don't PM me regarding this thread, unless I PM'ed you in response to your thread reply. Thank you!
ENABLE USB DEBUGGING:
1. To enable "USB DEBUGGING", go to settings, then "About Phone", then tap "Build Number" 7 times.
2. Enable "USB debugging" and "OEM Unlock" in "Settings", "Developer options".
3. Connect the phone to PC with USB cable, install drivers if needed.
Download UnlockTools.7zip :
UnlockTools2.7z
Unzip and install as Administrator with shortcuts on your Desktop for easy access.
This zip contains two files:
Flexihub Setup - Used to connect to your Note 5 from remote connection. This can also be downloaded from the developers website as a free download for individual users. Google and you will find. Otherwise use my link.
TeamViewer Setup - Used to connect to your PC remotely and connect Flexihub software to your device. This can also be downloaded from the developers website as a free download for individual users. Google and you will find. Otherwise use my link.

Still trying to get Sprint version to unlock. My friend has expensive box and I'm thinking of getting one, but first he's letting me play around with it here and there. Still testing bro. PM me if you would like to try. Got mines to unlock, trying to replicate remotely now.
Interested!

You should've kept it! Little something for your thoughts. Instead of donating those, you should save them, you would be surprised what hardware and software a few hundred of them could buy! T Mobile working real good here on Memorial Day, oh yeah, that is a N920p! Just to fill you in, $#!+ def legit. Funny ass!

And in all honesty, Junior, you should not have waste your first post bro! Or should I say Troll! Look I'm just trying to replicate what I did for mines using remote access. You think all the remote unlocks and sim unlocks you seeing on ebay and on websites are fake? Trust me, they are not, but it is expensive hardware and software that does that. What I do is completely safe. If you don't like what you see, leave. Simple, but evidently you are a troll and your profile proves it. You ask no questions, subscribe to nothing.

I apologize. I misunderstood your gesture and apologize for my nasty reply. I work alot selling these things ( cell phones of course), so hard to be on here and I keep missing xda messages. Today, I work 9:00 am to 6 pm EST, but will be availabe outside that. Pm again, if you got time before 9:00 am. Ill PM after 6, if not. Once again, apologizes because I shoulda been more professional even if you were being sarcastic, though I know now you weren't with any ill intent.
