Update to 5.1? - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I know I am going to sound very annoying but I have googled various threads for hours and I still have not come close to an answer, so please be easy on me. I am a total noob!
So basically, Long story short, I bought this Moto G 2015 (4th Gen - Xt1072 the 5inch screen one) earlier this year, and it has been very slow ever since! So now, I am getting notifications that I cant update to 5.1!
The issue is, my phone is rooted, and I would like it to remain rooted! So, I am assuming i will not be able to install the update file.
The real question I have is, how do I go about this? How do i update to 5.1 (22.46.12.en.GB) without losing my root? I am happy with backing it all up on Titanium, and then updating but I don't know how to do it. Do I have to download the new android on my laptop and then re-install it or something? All this technical talk is literally racking my brain!
I know the solution is probably simple so I would really appreciate if someone can give me a simple answer!
Thanks so much

U have to unroot before doing update .. Or wait for flashable zip of updated rom

Ok, how do I find if there is flashable zip of updated rom? will I lose my files? I have backed them up in titanium anyway

i tried to update my firmware, and now the phone goes to recovery. when i try to start the phone normally, it works for maybe 30 seconds and then restarts back to recovery. Please help anyone, need this urgently sorted!!

[Q] 5.0.1 on Shield - is it worth it?

Hey everybody,
about a month ago I went through all the pain of updating to Lollipop and then root it with all the cluttered info I found. I was confused and scared. I got drunk. I threw some weird stuff at the thing. It worked.
Still don't know why.
Well as much as I like getting drunk again to update to 5.0.1 - is it worth going through the trouble again? I can't even install the updates that the tablet downloads again and again all the time.
I have 5.0, rooted.
Thank guys.

It is not super complicated to do. I would upgrade - you can find instructions in various places (including XDA).
When updating to 5.0 I did a complete wipe - and then installed all apps by hand one by one. That took quite a while
When going 5.0 to 5.01 I just flashed 5.01 (the full package) via CWM and then reinstalled root.
Took me about 30 - 45 minutes.

Thanks for the quick reply.
After watching some videos about 5.0.1. it still leaves me scratching my head about why I would like to go through the pain again.
Having said that, do you have a link to the process? I actually haven't found a nice one here, but that's maybe only me. Any help appreciated and thanks again Gadgetguy.
I'd suggest checking out this topic, which is similar (identical?) to this one in subject. You might have missed it, since it's a question posted in a non-question area.

[Q] My OPO won't update! I need help!

So I got my opo last summer and I was sooo excited to get it. I got the invite that morning and at that moment I changed my mine from getting a nexus 5 to getting the OPO. So a few months past and I finaly found out how to root my device and I did everything I could to preserve it. So one day I update my OPO and all of a sudden my Device wasn't rooted anymore! I wasn't completely devastated and everything looked fine. Then another month past and I got a notification for an update I think 33R or something like that so I didn't really care as much so I left it alone. I tried to fix it but nothing. So I didn't care. But now that the OPO is getting the update for android 5.0 soon or maybe its already out I really need to fix this NOW! So if anyone can help it would be the most helpful of you cause I'm starting to think of getting a new phone. But the OPO is such a great phone I don't want to get rid of it for a while. Please help! I really need to know how to fix this!
Just download the updates and flash them sequentially, with a reboot in between each update. You'll find them here

I'm confused as to what the problem is? If it's not having root anymore, you need to download SuperSU zip and flash that in your custom recovery like twrp our whatever you have.
Every time you do an update the SuperSU file can be flashed, it won't do any harm but it'll make sure you retain root

[Q] how to update a 5.0.1 rooted?

Hey community,
after updating my 5.0 LTE 32 Shield Tablet some month ago and rooting it, I came to the conclusion that I don't really need root, but would like to continue receiving OTAs and have a device that just works.
Prio1:
Have a tablet with the latest updates installed.
Prio2:
As 1, but rooted.
I have made a apps+sysapps backup with Titanium.
What do you recommend as the next step?
Thank you very much.
All the best, Esshahn
Some additions:
1. I noticed I'm actually having 5.0 on my Shield. It's the 5.0.1 update plus the nVidia stuff that comes up all the time in the notification center.
I really just want to undo all root and whatnot actions and have a right out of the box experience on my Shield. I already did some stupid stuff (factory reset) and therefore lost my personal data anyway, so there's nothing to lose.
I noticed this forum isn't really active. If anyone doesn't know the answer, but could point me to the right forum for help that would be nice too.
Thank you
flash the full OTA through recovery: https://forums.geforce.com/default/...hread-released-2-17-15-/post/4464815/#4464815
then reinstall supersu through recovery, no factory reset needed
Thank you for replying.
I got annoyed by it all yesterday and flashed 2.1, now I don't have root or custom recovery anymore.
Now the fun part: When I want to update to 2.2 normally (since it's now supposed to be a standard device without any hacks), it just shows the error robot.
So now I'm stuck with 2.1 and can't move left or right.
After reading all those comments about messed up colors in 2.2 I'm wondering if its actually worth the effort to update?
Any idea on that Bogdacutu?
Thanks,
Esshahn

you can flash the full OTA through TWRP or CWM, no idea why it won't work with stock recovery though
the update supposedly fixes the graphics glitches that appear in various apps on update 2.1, that might be a good reason to update
Thank you!
Actually, since I didn't have CWM installed anymore, I just sideloaded the latest OTA, which worked nice.

[Q] Last Resort... Need Help.

Phone: Motorola Moto G XT1032
OS: Android 4.4.4
Let me start by saying that I am new here, and I am not sure if this is the correct place to ask for help, but here I go anyway...
I am in desperate need of assistance. Against all better judgment, I rooted my phone a few months ago and now I am in a "pickle" so to speak. I recently recieved the Android 5.0.2 OTA Update notification. I have attempted multiple times to install this update but each and every time I do so, it returns me (after rebooting) a message along the lines of "software update was unsuccessful". I have sifted through some posts online with no avail. I am not the best person when it comes to my phone, however I do know how to get around on a computer.
I guess I should also add that I read somewhere that the phone must be un-rooted before attempting to upgrade, however, I have alrady attempted to do so with the "Full Unroot" option in SuperSu, but the only thing that seemed to have happened is the app is now deleted.
Another thing, I only rooted my phone and did not install any of the recovery programs like CWM or TWRP. This is stock android and no Custom ROM.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I have been waiting for Andoid L for a very long time and am very upset that I am having all these issues trying to use it.
Thank you for listening and look forward to seeing if anyone can help me.
DubstepCanada.
What you may try to want to do is to find the factory stock image online for which ever version you have and run it then upgrade to each new version till you get to lollipop update. Yes you will lose all of your data but if lollipop is what you want that is probably what your gonna have to do. Every time a factory update is available on Motorola before it does the update it will check for every app and checks file system and recovery. Anything out of the ordinary and it will usually not upgrade it. So if I was you look for the stock factory image of 4.4.4 and update to lollipop 5.0.2.
Alternatively flash a custom recovery, TWRP or Philz Touch, and then do a factory reset and flash one of the zips in this collection:

Less risk and you keep your photos etc.

[Completed] Lost Root somehow and can't seen to reapply it on my ZTE ZMaxx!!

OK first off this is my gfs phone, I had rooted it using Kingroot with no problem. I flashed a custom ROM I used cynogen 12.1 and also flashed a synthetic v3 kernel. Her phone was working just fine until she let some know it all at her work mess with it! I was wondering why the hell I couldn't get into recovery thru my twrp. I have to manually do it now. Even then everything I try to do it says it fails. So I can't back it up at all. Nor flash the old stock KitKat THST it originally came with. Her screen has been blacking out to every since that dumbass friend of hers downloaded pimp my rom. He had no clue wtf he was doing. Now thru that app it allows me to delete all added **** he did to it. But somehow her phone lost her permanent root!!?? Beats me, but it explains why I can't use device control anymore. And why I can't wipe the cache to the dalvik machine. I can't flash any roms, I can't do ****. I tried using kingroot but no work! It worked on my 4th try last time but I was using her stock Android 4.44 KitKat rom. I recall reading somewhere that kingroot doesn't support lollipop 5.2 which is what I put on her phone using Cynogen 12.1!!! So basically if I can't gain access to permanently root her phone I won't be able to fix it at all! Which is bs! Van anyone help me? I manually go into recovery mode it won't even let me do a factory reset. No matter what I do it keeps saying Fail!!! I'm growing very impatient, I need to fix her phone asap. I'd appreciate it if any of you guys can help me out please. Thank you for your time...hope someone helps me.
