Coming from the Moto 360 Gen 1 I loved how the clock showed when docked, made a nice bedside clock. As far as I can tell there isn't a way to do this with the S2 is there? I have the screen set to "Always On" and it works great that way on my wrist, get over a days usage with that setting. As soon as I set it on the charger though the screen will time out and go black.
I'm guessing this is to prevent burn in perhaps? Which I'm actually a little concerned about with "Always On" on my wrist, but thats another topic.
So am I missing something or can you not use the Gear S2 as a night stand clock?
Yepp, so far there is no always-on setting for the charging station.
And yes, AMOLEDs can burn in, but this could easily be avoided by shifting the night clock from time to time (like a screen saver).
And no, don't worry about burn in when using always on while wearing. The S2 will show needles only and they also move a tiny bit every time.
OT: I gave up on always on as it really drowns the battery though (by 56-60% compared to off)

My "Always On" displays a digital clock, no needles... Maybe this is dependent on the watch face you have picked, I haven't tried changing the face with always on switched... well on.
For me it's worth the battery hit, it still easily lasts a day which is all i need
Alive
I found a way. Load the app “Alive“. Turn the switch on. Use a dark watchface (e.g. Simple dark gear), adjust the brightness. Enjoy
Here you see my bedside-clock, you also need "Alive" and put it over night in the charger - it's bright enough for a dark night
In 3 days in store as "OneNightStand"

In 3 days you may get the "NightStand - second edition" with starry night
Where? I can't find this app. Where do I find it?
Searching for "Nightstand" in store I get this 2 results: "NightStand" and "NightStand - 12h".
Another way: search for "Armin"
AND: If you want to use it all night long you have to activate the APP "I am Alive" !
search for "bedside" for night clock face
You can search for "bedside" as well for an analog clock that minimizes burn in. Bedside Night Table Charging watch face.

I was using Nokia C7 previously, and what I specially loved about it was the clock that switched on with a low screen brightness when screen was locked. I am currently using HTC Desire, and it somewhat has an almost, I say almost, similiar feature - the desk clock. What I want is, and many more, that Android should also have a similiar app that can switch to a digital clock when the screen is locked, with wake lock feature, and minimal processor usage... I specially want this this since during nighttime reading, I find it irksome to even press a button on my phone. and it sould keep runing without needing touch input...
I need those posts xD
goto market and try this: DockClock, it works if youre phone is on power supply.

Buy a cheap digital clock on ebay ! ! !
The effect u desire to get is a glowing number plate on the screen of your phone, which would require the screen to be turned on for whole night, i don't think battery will love such relationships at night
Awesome idea

If you have an AMOLED screen, I'd read up on how they work.
Personally, I wouldn't want to waste my screen life with this, even if it might be minimal - just get a cheap digital clock and put some tint over it if it's still too bright.

+1 on this! ^ :good:
Oh come on guys, can't y'all do something that fits my description???????????? I love the desk clock on C7, and it doesn't drain the battery. With SetCPU, we can set profiles, and that's not gonna drain the battery. And what more do I need?? I run my battery for almost three days, because I've got normal usage according to me.
So I had the Sony Smartwatch that is available on their US website right now and then realized the Sony SmartWatch 2 was available on Amazon so I returned the one I got from Sony and bought the SmartWatch 2. I really really like it, as I have had a Pebble (returned it because I thought the screen was garbage) so I am very happy with this watch.
I just have two questions I am hoping someone with the watch can answer. First the watch face is always showing correct? On the first one you had to double tap (which hardly worked) to show the time. I just want to make sure that the watch face is always supposed to be showing?
Second if you look at the manual there is a light sensor towards the top left of the watch but I am confused as to what it is for. As there is no Auto Brightness what would the light sensor be for and how can I tell if it is working correctly?
Funny because Sony customer service could not give me a straight answer on these questions. Thank you for anyone that could help!!!
the watch face (time) is always showing, but normally without backlight
the backlight comes on when you press the button, press it again to go into the apps list
don't know about the light sensor, sorry
I believe that the light sensor is used to tell when the watch is in high light leves, so it can turn off the backlight, and go into "high light level" mode (which goes B&W I believe) to make the watch readable in the sun.
Awesome thanks for the replys guys....how you guys liking the watch....I am really impressed.....just wish there was more clock faces in the play store.
The clock will disappear if the watch is left on a desk without movement for 5 mins. As soon as you move it, it will re-appear.

Yes, so clearly there is a motion sensor in the watch as well like the smartwatch 1 had. I haven't managed to get any "effect" from the light sensor even in full sunlight, so I am not sure if they are utilizing that feature yet.

I am going to try that 5 min thing now....and i also see no difference with the light sensor...maybe in a future update....i get crazy with my electronics lol i like to know everything is working correctly....but it sounds like evryone is acting just as mine....
EDIT....So i have it sitting on my desk for about the last 10 or so minutes and the display has not gone out.....does everyones do that?
Edit of the Edit.....so the disply did go out but it took about 15 mins...maybe there was a slight movement that made it take longer....
Any other tips or tricks you guys have discovered? Really loving the watch...any cool apps u find?
Hey people
Got my smart watch about 4 days ago and it was all good until tonight and now for some reason i can't see the clock anymore unless i press the power button :S i could have sworn it had a low light mode and the clock was visable ok but since tonight i can't see the time unless there's a light pointing straight at the watch. I hooked it upto the service centre thing and updated it through that but hasn't helped.
am I going mad here and just seeing things? :S
EDIT: i also noticed when i turn it off i get some weird colours appearing in the clockface some pinks/purples. i don't understand it was ok a couple of hours ago and it's been on my wrist the whole time :S
Did you try to reset the watch? Also our you have any custom clocks installed, remove them. As after reset, Sony smartwatch app will reinstall them on the watch, once the watch and the phone are connected.
On your watch, go to settings and tap reset watch.

Just to make it clear, you are not talking about the low power mode right? No backlight, but can be still seen by people in ambient light??? Maybe you should take a picture of the watch so we can clearly see what is going on.
At night my sw2 turns of the screen completely. But when I MOVE the watch it turns on the clock on the display. I think it has an accelerometer that turns off the screen when no movement is detected.

It is a feature to save battery when it isn't worn.
I am more curious as to the "watch (display) turns on from moving it". Does the SW2 have an accelerometer? My watch display doesn't kick on when I move it. Or was this a feature of the earlier SmartWatches?

I believe SW2 does have an accelerometer. Put your watch on a table, leave it untouched for while, screen completely turns off. Not even the low power watch mode is displayed. But once you move it, low power watch comes back on (without the backlight). I observed it many times when it was charging and when left at the bed side table.
But it is not utilized for backlight function. That is a missing feature people are asking for. But I don't really need it. Just like a regular watch, I press a button to turn the light on when I can't see it in the dark.

Wow... I didn't even notice the screen going completely black after sitting for a while. I am still on watch honeymoon, and either the watch is on my wrist or turned off and on the dresser. But sure enough, it does go into a deeper "sleep" mode and wakes up when I pick it up. Nice!
I do see that having it wake to the backlit mode would be nice but it would seem to kill the battery since when worn it would be in more constant movement. Unless they tuned the accelerometer to only wake when a more significant motion happens.

Yeah the previous iteration of smartwatch from Sony did not have always on watchface and it was a necessity. And to see the time you had to turn on the display. One way was to double tap on the watch screen to wake it up. Another way was to light up the screen by lifting your arm and turning the watch towards you. But the second way never really worked reliably.
But I don't think SW2 needs that. As we already have always on watch with great readability even in places where there little light.

So there is nothing on the screen not even the low power mode on the watch. I don't know what to tell you boss as you have already done a reset. Maybe one thing to check is to use SUS to reflash the firmware using your pc, if you haven't done it already.

Hi,
I just bought my Gear S2 classic yesterday.
I am using the (always on mode) and disabled the wake up gesture.
Even though I am using the (always on mode), some times the screen switchs off and I need to press on any button to wake it up.
Any idea on this? is it a fault?
Thanks,
So.. anyone faced this?
Thanks,
I've had this too. Tried everything to figure out why the clock didn't go in to ambient mode. Gave up trying in the end
Then, it sorted itself out the other day after I had rearranged the order of the apps on the app wheel. I'm sure this was just a coincidence though.

Thanks alot... I have just did factory reset to the watch... and let's see... i was using a custom face from Mr. time.. now i am using one of the default faces.
let's see
Yes I was, and still am, using a Mr Time watch face. Think it might be messing up the ambient mode for all watch faces. Although the standard watch faces were doing the same.

This appears to be a common problem and based on another thread, it doesn't appear to be fixed in the last firmware release to Korea

it happens with other watchfaces as well.
my settings:
- always on option is selected (on).
- wake up gesture is not selected (off).
problem: some times the watch hands turns off (like if the "always on" option is not selected.
it works fine for some time and then suddenly i look at the watch.. to find the screen black.
actions taken: using the original watchface, uninstalling Mr. time watchface... factory reset.... non of them helped.
Thanks,

I thought I was having the same problem, but then put the watch on my wrist and all of a sudden it went into ambient mode. With wake up gesture on, the screen goes to full mode when I glance at the watch. But if I remove the watch from my wrist and put it on the table, the screen goes off completely.
So I guess it detects when watch is on your wrist and acts accordingly.
Hope that helps.

What you are saying is absolutely right regarding the watch screen turning off when you take it off your wrist for power saving.
but I think what we are talking about is a sort of bug... (when you have always on-on and wake up gesture-off, and the watch will randomly blank the screen while you are wearing it ...) like what is explained in the previous link (another thread).

Let's hope this is a software issue and Samsung might be able to fix it with a patch very soon.
Are you using the standard strap? I got really frustrated after I put the watch on a perlon band because the ambient mode suddenly wasn't working, and then I realized the strap was covering the heart rate sensor, which is how the watch knows whether or not it's on a wrist. I cut a hole in the strap (and heat-sealed the edges) and back to ambient mode.

Hmm.. I am using the standard strap.. but like to make it lose.. do you think it should be tight on hand ? .. and are you sure it is the heart rate sensor is the one that monitors? or it is by movement..
I got the latest firmware yesterday (that was in Korea few days ago).. and the same problem happened again... so i thought it is a bug and not yet fixed...
i will try to make the watch sealed on my hand and will see.. thanks for the advise... will let you know the result
Even after tightening the strap, the display goes black after a while. So annoying... I cant believe Samsung couldn't get something so simple as always on ambient mode correctly. Their software shortcomings are increasingly becoming irritating.

I use Always On Display (AOD) all the time. With my previous watch (S2 Classic) it used to shift every minute or so to prevent burn-in.
I watched very closely the S3 AOD and I cannot see any shifting whatsoever, with both stock and non-stock watch faces.
Have you guys noticed the same, or is there something wrong with mine?

Same thing with mine and after 2 or 3 days it would leave a ghosting effect on the screen but it would eventually go away when turning off always on. I have tried resetting the watch to see if it worked but still doesnt. Im hoping its a software issue and will eventually be fixed.
Where do you see this "ghosting" effect, screen switched off or some black menu screen? I presume this is initial sign of burn-in.
I switch off AOD at night and change watch faces regularly. I can't live with a black screen watch, so for now changing faces is my way to work around this.
Its by the hour marks. And i can see it whenever i get a notification and when the screen is gray. But its gone now. It happened twice so im just going to wait for an update to see if it fixes the always on.
