Root tutorial:
Install adb / fastboot drivers for the tablet
– Try this version first . 1.3 – http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979 If it doesnt work . ( Like for me use 1.0) http://adbdriver.com/downloads/. Should work on windows 8.1 and windows 7
– Enable USB debugging and leave tablet on.
– Download SuperSU (http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu)
– Download IntelAndroid-FBRL (https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95897840722644693)
– Copy UPDATE-SuperSU-vX.Xx.zip to the tablet
– Uncompress IntelAndroid-FBRL on your computer
– Launch “launcher.bat” from IntelAndroid-FBRL folder ( Screen will be cyan if good )
– Type “ACCEPT”
– Check if device status and device information are OK, ( Screen should be cyan if ok and red if not. Refresh status by hitting enter. Remember if you get device status as unauthorised then go back to tablet and grant access. Screen will go cyan after if approval is given ) then type “T3″ the script will run . I got a fail at one point but it still booted in CWM.
– The tablet should reboot in fastboot mode, and after another auto-reboot, CWM recovery should show up
– Flash UPDATE-SuperSU-vX.Xx.zip
– Wipe Cache . ( Can take a while be patient. )
– Reboot !

Thanks for this guide. Is there any alternative to the stock rom? Like Cyanogenmod or Miui? Can you also make a guide to restore to factory conditions? Thank you very much

As of now there isn't any Lollipop build for the device and I don't think it will be.

What is the reason for no rom? Intel does't released the kernel sources?
Sent from mTalk

Do you have a custom rom for Hi8?
I mean for example RemixOS, MIUI with multi-language.

Hi, my chuwi hi8 does not power ON and charge, etc. It just went down when I let it charge overnight and it does not turn ON anymore? Is there any thing that I did something wrong or maybe it any way that can fix the problem?
I already tried battery reset " remove solder of the red wire, wait and plug in the usb cable to see for direct power but unfornately nothing's happened. Return the red wire again but still no use.
Please help, I love this tablet but it appears to be of no use no more.
Thank you....:crying::crying:

Step 1. Download and install PhoenixSuit
Step 2. Download firmware image from above link for your tablet and load it in PhoenixSuit. If you receive error in PhoenixSuit, you can try moving the firmware file to desktop. That worked for me.
Step 3. Enable USB debug in tablet's developer settings and connect to computer. PhoenixSuit will inform you of this and then it's just follow the instructions on screen.
Alternative Step 3. If this normal procedure does not work and/or your tablet is a little soft bricked. You can try the following:
-Unplug USB-cable from computer.
-Power off your tablet. (Holding the power button for approx 10 seconds if the tablet is locked/black screen after boot)
-Press and hold the Home-button on the tablet, and plug in the USB cable.
-Continue to keep the home-button pressed and click on the Power button very shortly (about 0,5 seconds) about 10 times.
You should see a new dialog box appear in PhoenixSuit asking you to perform a "Mandatory format"
- Select "yes" to enter the format upgrade mode.

Sure wish we get more of an interest here. With all the knowledgeable people in this community this tablet would surely show its potential.
wow so I am ready to make one order for this tablet hopefully by 6 days i can do a mini review,
anyone bought this already?
It looks very similar to Apple's Ipad.
Could I use an Ipad casing with this tablet?
All the casings I can find on eBay for this 'Spark' are very ugly.

It depends on the casing. If it's one of those that's "clipped on" the back, it won't fit. This does not have the same rounded off edges as the ipad.
Other types should work just fine.
I have this Universal 9.7 Inch Leather Smart Case
yes i'm talking about those with the magnetic clips that covers the front of the Ipad.. I hoped I could use them

Okay, those who are only attached on the side by magnet? Not sure about that one. Considering all the available space and ease of removing the back cover, I think it would be possible to make the side magnetic, if it isn't already. Then adopting the cover, if needed. Hopefully something similar will come to other tablet's with different edge than that of the ipad.
The plastic ones that goes one-in-one with the back was the one I was aiming at that won't fit. Like this
Thank You, but i'm looking for more elegant case.
"Cheese" are making a nice case for the "Ainol Hero".. Maybe I will buy the "Hero 2" instead of the "Spark" (just ordered it yesterday but I assume I can still regret)
Mine just arrived today. So far so good, the screen is awesome. The bad thing is of course the soc, but still usable

Well I tried to cancel my order of this 'Spark' but the seller already shipped it.
I'm looking for about 8 hours of battery life with browsering and reading PDF's, so I think the best choice for me now, after reading a lot of reviews, would be the first 'Hero' (dual core model)m but i'm stuck with this 'Spark'.

Well if you don't mind the price different I think it okay for the spark as it has higher resolution display. Full gaming battery is about 5 hours

I don't mind about the price, but in the reviews it gets a bad ranking in battery time because of its high res screen (takes more power)
I would be happy to hear about your experience with the battery.

In general it's about 4-5 hours when gaming with wi-fi on (The Simpsons Tapped out).
Somewhat better when watching music videos and wi-fi off. Approx 5-6 hours (full HD videos).
thank you.. I think I'll sell it and buy the hero.

build-prop tweaks anyone?
Has anyone tried any build.prop tweaks?
I've changed manufacturer and model description to immitate Motorola Xyboard/Xoom 2 as it also uses SGX chipset. This went fine, it worked for some things, but still error 5002 on the Sims FreePlay. Most likely due to no support for the Spark's DPI. I tried setting it to 160 DPI (or perhaps it was 140, not 100 % sure). This caused a soft brick, but I was able to get it working again with the mandatory upgrade with phoenixsuit.
Has anyone had any luck changing dpi?
Edit:
I also changed the XML files as described HERE. It gave me acces to more apps in Google Play than emulating the Xyboard/Xoom 2. Still no luck on the Sims though.

I am in the process of exploring the device and getting used to it. It is full of bugs at this point and doesn't run as smooth as I'd like. It's still a great deal for $200. It took about 2 weeks to arrive. You can get one online by just googling onda v989. I doubt I am allowed to place a link, feel free to look it up. You can request it in English. Unfortunately, you need to update the firmware as soon as you get it and the firmware is in Chinese. It took a little experimentation to figure out how to change it to English, but once I figured it out, I was off to the races.
Some problems I have had: The battery runs down pretty quick. I believe they are still tuning the driver set for the Bit/Little processor. There's just something off about the battery. It is falsely reporting the top consumer as "Cell Standby" which I found out is just a bug in the code and its not actually cell standby. I would assume its the screen that is taking up all the juice.
I have also had problems with charging - with some of the firmware I have used it reboots while it is charging every 10 minutes or so. I haven't really had time to figure out the root of this problem, but I have tried a full factory reset to try to get this thing stable. Still no luck.
There always appears to be some Chinese characters on the screen even though I switched to english. I would assume that the Chinese characters are due to Chinese versions of applications installed and I have since replaced those apps with the english version. I have worked around this mostly. I would love there to be an English version of the rom.
Please use this post to discuss this beastly device and hopefully get some excitement around it to develop some English ROMS
I was just looking to see the highest antutu scores are coming in and I am shocked that this is significantly higher than the highest I have found. The top I have seen is around 42k! This thing blows that away. I just ran it again thinking that it was some kind of a fluke and sure enough, 63k again!
hey ,,i made a review video about this tablet, Onda v989, share with you .

I just bought the tablet 2. Because of the amazing score.. I got 64000... The multi core is good but single core is bad.. If you but it on fight option... The batteries decent

Lol is anyone interested in taking a look at this children's tablet?

There isn't any much information on the tab specs-wise, except that it runs on a customised Android distribution with a child-friendly UI (think Samsung's Kid UI), a 1024x600 LCD screen, and a dual-core Rockchip RK3168 SOC. That's besides VTech developed or curated edutaiment apps being distributed physically through proprietary cartridges (using a wrapper as NeverLies mentioned), a stylus pen and of course the form factor.
Mom's Messy Miracles is currently having a giveaway contest, if anyone's up to it.
UPDATE: @ifhi has managed to debloat and convert his Innotab into a plain ol' Android tablet; see this post for details.
UPDATE 2: Instructions on how to convert the Innotab can be found here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/convert-vtech-innotab-maxx-android-t4060429
Sorry for the bump, but anyone?
I'm also interested in some hacking of this device. I'm interested in the device so my daughter can still use her cartridges but still have a full android tablet.

I'm not sure if I'd be able to pick one up in the near future, but I'm interested in tinkering with one and knowing as to what VTech used for the Max's internals, like the card slot and of course the SOC used.
That, and since this is by and large a children's device, I'm sure Samsung's Kids UI would be a natural fit for this tab. That is if it can be ported at all. Oh, and Cyanogenmod, anyone?
I am also very interested to hack this device.

It has been hacked, there is a firmware hack to allow you to dump carts to the SD card. Trouble is I cant find anywhere to get pre dumped games so its not a moneysaver for me yet. You can also convert video to play too.
Any info on where I can download games would be much appreciated. The hack author wont allow pirated games.
Failing that maybe we could share??
for the hack google spiffy hacks innotab
The hack is for INNOTAB MAX version ?

Heard of it, but I'm actually interested in a root/recovery for the device as this one runs on Android. Yeah, there has been hacks for the other Innotab models, but while there's a thread in Spiffy's board mentioning about the possibility of supporting the Max, no hacks or root tricks for the latter exist yet.
Innotab/Storio (european name) Max
Hi
Anyone succeeded to root the tablet, or at least install an alternate store (Google Play Store or Amazon App Store) ?
I couldn't find anything about a way to dump games to SD card, can someone post some information about it ?
Are there any debugging options available on the tablet when you log in to Parent Mode? Something along the lines of Unknown Sources or at least a USB debug mode?
I would be definitely interested in accessing the play store and having root rights with this tablet. But I need to still have access to the Vtech UI for my child. (good UI I think, but a little slow sometimes).

Not that I know of the box it comes in doesn't say much and there's virtually no help on the options screen trying to find a way to maybe boot into recovery or something but I am very interested in finding some sort of alternate ui or a way to add apps from the play store and such if anyone would be kind enough to help I'd greatly appreciate it

Root
Hello,
Is it always impossible to root it ?
Does someone manage to go to recovery ?
I tried some combination of keys with power Button, but no luck.
Hello there
My daughter just had one, and I've spend couple of hours on this one.
Right now, here is the status:
- I can boot in bootloader interface mode
- I can "adb" with device
- while in shell mode, "su" is working fine, and can read full content of the tablet
You can see in attached pic that they may had some issue on the wifi/bluetooth device as they are some testonly release in it
Root
Wow !!
It's a good news !
Could you tell me how you enter in bootloader mode ?
Thank you for your work !
I don't want everyone to get a bricked device so let's wait a few and found out what is available.
I've also made available some information on spiffy. Let me see If I can get the FW
As posted on spiffy, here are the instructions
1. Turn OFF your MAX
2. In order to get access, you will have to boot to recovery
* * *- Plugin USB cable and wait for the battery charging animation
* * *- Hold down UP (on the dpad) + LEFT (on the dpad) + Context Key (the one on the upper left) and press ON for 3 seconds
-------- Alternate: Up & left (d-pad) vol up and power button (3 seconds)
* * *- It will stay black screen, this is normal
3. Using the google driver, edit the "android_winusb.inf" file on your PC, and add following lines:
- In section named “[Google.NTx86]”
;InnoTab Max
%SingleBootLoaderInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_2207&PID_0006
%SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_2207&PID_0006
- In section named “[Google.NTamd64]”
;InnoTab Max
%SingleBootLoaderInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_2207&PID_0006
%SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_2207&PID_0006
4. Plug the MAX on your PC using USB cable
5. Drivers should be then installed correctly (thanks to modifications done in android_winusb.inf)
You now have adb access to your tablet, only in recovery mode. You can test using "adb devices" command, it should list your device
6. start adb shell using "adb shell" command on your PC
7. Get root access, using "su" command
8. Enable adb for normal mode, using this command: "setprop persist.service.adb.enable 1"
9. You can now reboot the tablet in normal mode using "reboot" command
Once tablet is rebooted, you will see an unknown device, based on the rk30 board. You will need rockship driver pack to continue with adb in this normal mode
10. Install driver pack for rockship from: http://dl.radxa.com/rock/tools/windows/RK_DriverAssitant.zip
You now have complete ADB access to your tablet
I've just installed the latest firmware upgrade available and the device is reported to be running on android 4.2.2
Let me know if you have issue while following these steps, but should be quite straightforward.
Note that busybox 1.11.1 is already available, and you have root access.
If you need to factory reset your tablet, the key combination is almost the same as getting in recovery
Hit: UP + LEFT + ? and turn on the tablet
------------------ Android Launcher ---------------------------------
Start adb shell and type the following command:
am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN -c android.intent.category.HOME
this will move to foreground the android launcher
Congratulation !
How did you find this konami code ???
So, can we install apk ? Is it possible to reboot with vtech launcher ?
Thank you again !
Looking interesting now been playing with my daughters when she not demanding Peppa pig on it some cool posibility with it if we can launch some apks on there

Chuwi Hi8 review: high performance at cheap price

With a tight budget of around $100 and a need of a good tablet for use, you may think about Chuwi Hi8 as a good choice. At a reasonable price, Chuwi offers users a 2GB RAM 32GB ROM, 1920 x 1200 pixel screen dual booting system tablet. This review will provide a close look at Hi8 to see why it is a worth buying item. The review is supported by Sam from Gearbest.com.
What’s in the box?
1* Tablet
1* Charger
1* USB Cable
1* OTG Cable
1* Earphone
1* User Manual

Hardware
Chuwi Hi8 relies on a quad-core Intel Atom Z3736F clocked at up to 2.16Ghz and a 7th-gen Intel HD GPU to run these operating systems and their respective apps. For multitasking, the tablet comes with 2GB of RAM (which are detected as such in Windows 8.1 with Bing, but only seen as 1.87GB on Android). As far as storage is concerned, Win8.1 will show 14GB of ROM, out of the 32GB featured by the tablet, and 6.78GB in Android. That surely doesn’t sound like much, but microSD cards of up to 64GB can be used to expand that.
For an 8-inch display, Chuwi Hi8 has a pretty impressive resolution, especially considering the price. A 1920×1200 IPS MagicColor Panel was used, and the pixel density of 283PPI should make everything look crystal clear.
To stay connected, this tablet relies on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antennas, as well as USB OTG. In fact, an USB OTG cable is provided in the box, along with the charger and the data cable. The 4,000mAh battery shouldn’t take long to charge, provided that the charger is rated at 5V/2A. According to the manufacturer, that capacity should be just enough for up to 5 hours of video playback. In any case, it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to carry a power bank with you, while on the go.
Windows
At the time of this review the tablet ships with Windows 8.1 Bing and includes one free year of Office 365. What’s not certain is once Windows 10 is released will Chuwi start to ship them out with Windows 10 and will office still be included?
Like all 32GB dual boots you have limited space, Windows has just 10GB of free storage so once the Windows updates start rolling and then the upgrade to Windows 10 you’ll likely to have much less than this. This is why I personally think all dual boots should have at least 64GB eMMC’s for storage.
Performance in Windows is fine, Windows, apps, folders all load up quickly, the tablet boots up quick and IE11 is as fluid as it ever is. The only degraded performance from the slower eMMC drive is large application install times and loading. It’s a bit slower than usual from an eMMC.
Android
The Chuwi Hi8 comes with Android 4.4.4 stock and Play Store is working out of the box. There are some bloatware applications, but all of them can be removed bar one, the Chuwi App store. You’ll to root the tablet in order to remove it.
The rom is quick and I encountered no slow down or stutters. You have a small 6.67GB free user space on the internal storage. Not much at all to play with once you start to download large games.
Switching Operating System
Windows and Android side by side, it’s just a matter of touching the Android icon in Windows and you’ll boot over to Android. The same goes for Android, just select Windows from the drop down menu. The system will reset and then boot over to the other OS. If you shut down in Android, it will boot in Android.. same for Windows. If you want to choose which OS on boot, you can hold volume key down and press power to start.
Benchmarks
The Chuwi Hi8 get 33950 scores at Antutu benchmark, It is amazing result in price.
The Chuwi Hi8 is definitely not the most powerful device out there, but it’s really cheap and it actually offers rather solid specifications. If you’re interested in the dual boot aspect, then this is one of the few such offerings you’ll find in the market. Either way, you can purchase the Chuwi Hi8 from GearBest now for $99.99 and get free ship world wide.

Bad experience
I have bought chuwi hi8 via DealExtreme at a very hugh price 109€ and it is the worst tablet i ever tried. The machive overheats all the time. If you restore windows you lose the O.S. swaping app. Youtube on android is limited to 720p. The ambedded video on android crashes 40% of the time. And the Multi user options on android does not exist.
If you brighten the screen on windows via energy saving, windows crashes all the time and becomes unusable, The audio works via WDM compatibility.
See why i write this post on my videos:

And finally the RMA is very difficult.
mine is came with already windows 10. charging is faster when you turn off the tablet. have excel word etc on mobile version. so far its ok. didnt have many problem.

How is tablet holding so far? I was thinking about getting it but I'm unsure because of seeing mixed reviews.
