what should i buy? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a 8013 that has been a great tablet, I am thinking of buying something better and would like some suggestions. I not brand specific, just wanting something faster and better resolution. Please reply with some ideas for me.

The tab s is nearly similar to the tab s2 with its specs. I have tha tab s 8.4 and it just rocks. Its light and thin and has good performance

I have an 8013 as well. I am currently using it as my desktop tablet at work. At home I have a tab pro 8.4 and my wife has a tab s 8.4. Both are awesome tablets. You can't go wrong with either one. The S is marginally better than the pro but you should be abnl to get the pro much cheaper. I would get which ever one you can get the best deal on. My newest toy is a Nexus 9. It has awesome front facing speakers like the 8013. It is somewhat unique in that it has a 4:3 screen ratio like the iPad does. It is worth looking at as well. The advantage to a Nexus tablet is guaranteed updates to the latest version of Android. Samsungs are iffy when it comes to updates. I tend to buy used and got each of the above mentioned tablets for about 200 each on craigslist.

[Q] 7.0 vs 7.7

I currently own a 10.1 and have recently found that it's a little too big for my taste/uses. I'd like something more portable and have been contemplating between these two models.
The 7.0 plus is roughly $400 where as the 7.7 have been speculated to be $600-700.
Now for that price difference, what would I be getting out of the 7.7 for paying more?
Slightly faster processor
.7 inches
Amoled screen
Is that worth justifying the extra money?
I have a nexus with the samold screen and yes its great but this one on my 7.0 plus is great also once I found and unchecked the battery saving feature that dull down my colors and movie mode on. Samold colors are just slightly more saturated but this screen is very good. If you have a great job go for it but if your a broke factory worker like me then no way the extra 300 to fork out isn't going to be worth it. Just my opinion but I'm also a little bias since well you know you can see the sig, Development is the biggest thing for me so if theres going to be much more dev also then you might have to consider that, I'm happy with this as its the perfect size because I play on the go and even at home I want something I can game on comfortable 7.0 is definitely the sweet spot

Release date?
The bigger question is if/when the 7.7 will get released. I know it passed through the FCC for approval, but there's also a rumor that an 8.3 Samsung tablet is coming 1Q 2012.
To me, with the release of the 7+, I don't know why Samsung would release the 7.7 here, then an 8.3. I can't post links yet, but if you google Examiner Samsung 8.3 you'll see the news article I'm referring to.
I got tired of waiting and just got the 7+. Really like it.
I very much enjoy my GTab 7+ also.
What? An 8.3 now? Hmmm..7.0, 7.7, 8.3, 8.9.......what's next? Tabs for left handed people and right handed people? Very odd.
IMHO the 7" size is exactly the right size. Don't want it any bigger, or any smaller. The 7.0+ is the best in class.
Too many options!
10.1 too big
8.9 might be ok
Both running tegra2, might as well hop the plus or 7.7. Unfortunately I'm located in Korea so I'm not sure where I can go to check these out to compare sizes.

Or.......if rumor has it that Apple is looking to delve into the 7" range with their products perhaps Samsung is covering all....and I mean ALL...possible sizes? I read where they're looking at an 11" tab? (Smaller bezel really)
Nah. Too bizzare. Or maybe?
I think its going to become too confusing for people. If there were multiple sizes with similar hardware I think it would make more sense. 7.0, 7.7, 8.9, 10.1.... if they all had the same innards for the most part with slight changed like resolution it would make more sense.
Trying to explain to my Dad that the 7.0 Plus has a better processor than the 10.1 confused him. He's older and not very tech savvy... he looks at it as "its bigger so it has to be better, right?" Sure this has been going on for years with laptops and cell phones for example... but in an era where most companies don't dish out nearly as many different model tablets as they do laptops... he wasn't prepared for the differences.
It also didn't help when he went in to Best Buy on his own and the sales people at our local store were clueless and tried to downsell him to the Kindle Fire. He believes the reason they were doing that was because they knew his price point and wanted him to buy the extended warranty.

Best Buy may as well just sell out to Apple. Its all they keep in stock. I get treated like Garbage everytime I go into that muth. Today, I asked to purchase the one Plus they had and they told me it was for demonstration purposes and they had no other units. Wtf kind of Sense does that make? So I cruised over to HH Gregg, not only did they have a display model up to play with but they sold me a kit as well.
F Best Buy. Worst company I've ever been too. Walmarts customer service surpasses them.

Galaxy 8.9 - Discontinued?

I have heard from a lot of sources (many corporate) that the Samsung Galaxy 8.9 will not be continued by Sammy any further. They are focusing on 7" and 10.1" size in the US looking at the mediocre sales 8.9". Due to this reason the next generation of Galaxy tablets i.e., Tab 2 is strictly 10.1" and 7".
The Galaxy 8.9 32GB has already been deleted from many retailers' system after it was all sold. And 16GB continues till the stock depletes.
So if you are interested in Galaxy 8.9, time is running out. FYI!

I got on the 8.9 wagon myself, and am pretty disappointed I did. I think my best option would have been to hold out for the Sammy Note, and go with a 10.1" otherwise. The 8.9 has little support and it isn't nearly as useful IMO. It's like the awkward duckling.
Ah well, we live and we learn.

Which is too bad... because 8.9 is kind of the sweet spot. Just the right size.
I love my 8.9. I had the 10.1 but found it too big, tried out the HTC flyer 7 inch but it was too small IMO. I use my 8.9 everyday and can honestly say that it's perfect for what I want it to do. My laptop hardly ever gets turned on anymore!.

I agree with you.. I love my 8.9 LTE. Fast light easy to hold. This is the perfect size.
I'm glad I got it.
I wonder how much more successful the 8.9 would have been if it had a SD Slot?
How disappointing. I originally bought the samsung galaxy tab 7 +. It was too small and also didn't have that great developmental support. The samsung galaxy tab 8.9 is perfect for me. The quality fit and finish also feels much better on the 8.9. The only thing that I felt that it was lacking was a micro sd card slot. I'm just glad that I bought one before they are discontinued.

SD slot, better screen, faster software and maybe 100$ less than the 10" then it would have been a hit. Even with these problems I found it much more comfortable than other tablets. The size is really perfect and if you look at it maybe it's because it's closer to the one of the ipad or a medium size book.
Plus the GPS is a killer, that thing locks on satellites like nothing I have ever seen, it beats an Asus Transformer (not the prime)!!!
I think this tablet is massively under rated, it is a perfect size. It's replaced my netbook when I go to university. It's small and practical at the same time.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 using Tapatalk
The mediocre sales were due to limited outlets carrying the 8.9. As far as I know, it was limited to Best Buy for the longest time. Dumbest move ever. It really is the sweet spot tablet size wise. An SD slot would have made it killer.
Another vote for the 8.9!
I've been through the 10.1, 7.0 and this 8.9, and no doubt this is the best. -size and weight, portability and usabilty are superior! If sales were low, its mainly cause most people don't even know let alone have tried it.
I was a bit dissapointed there was no mention of galaxy tab 2 8.9, but the tab 2 series are minor refreshes so I am hoping an overhaul later this year or next brings exynos quad super amoled plus 8.9s!

That will be awesome but I doubt it.
I got to play with the Tab 2 10.1 today in the store. Frankly I wonder how well it will do. The only improvement is microSd slot. I believe to keep the price low, Samsung decided not to go for quad processsor. They even took the flash
out from the rear camera.
Quite frankly, whoever is in charge of Galaxy product development is trying to compete on price rather than the product. That's stupid.

My guess is the Galaxy Tab line is being turned into the middle range line for the masses - galaxy tab 2 is made to compete with the popular kindle fire and ipad2.
The high end line to compete with the new iPad[3] will probably be the Galaxy Note 10.1 Sammy promised to release. I am just hoping an 8.9 comes comes out in the Note family too! (With quad exynos and s amoled + or s LCD 2 and dedicated stylus and apps!
Amazon
Of course amazon.com always has stock available but they are 100$ more than the sold out stock on bestbuy.com...i was able to get my hands on a 32gb 8.9 and the size is perfect light thin...I guess the only thing really we could have used was the expandable microsd but with 32 gigs and only paying 350$ for mine last year I guess I cant complain...
So true about Amazon exploiting the fact they are few retailers left with 8.9 Galaxy. Last week it was $569.
Yeah, 8.9 is the perfect size. Terrible for it to be discontinued. Luckily our community is pretty strong, great devs doing great work so although it sucks, I'm not sweating the support loss as we support ourselves rather well. Thanks to all that contribute.

Same here. Had most of the popular 10.1's at some point along with a dell streak 7 and Evo View. The 8.9 is the perfect size to always carry. I toss the keyboard dock in the work bag and my Dell 11z has found a home in my car and hasn't left in ages. It's the 800 res in the 8.9" form factor that does the trick for me. Hope that opens the door for another mfg to step in with that size and maybe add a little connectivity without the dongles.
Maybe if they melded it with the features of the 7.7 it would have a better following.
I have to agree that the 8.9 is the perfect size!
Please keep the 8.9 alive Samsung!
I don't really mind the trends, and i think are some stupid opium for the masses.
but it really get on my nerves when affect the usability of the products.
also when someone have a real oportunity to make somenthing unique and instead just copycat the market leader
lets see tablets
7" too small to read / 10" too big to use with one hand..
10000 variants of a 7"inch
10000 variants of a 10"inch
and samsung stop using the 8.9" factor !!
let see phones
10000000000000000 phones one more similar to the other
but no one seems to do something different like
HARDWARE KEYBOARD?

Tell me what to buy?

Hey all
Im looking to venture into the world of tablets but with so many being available its all a little confusing! I like the look of the Nexus 7 for its power and incredibly good price but for me 7 inches is just a bigger phone I want something with the price tag and power (near enough) of a Nexus but with something like a 10 inch screen to make it feel like an actual tablet. Im only 16 with a part time job so i cant go for something like the Asus Infinity even though i would love that
So start shouting out your tablet choices people!
Your choices are quite limited; 10 inchers are usually at least $400.
I would recommend watching slickdeals.net for some reburbished deal if you really need one. In truth, however, the difference between 7 inch and phone is already quite significant and it makes the most sense for your price point (short of a "cheap" brand like archos).
i think go for the ipad if you like a bigger screen than nexus 7 ipad is also have the speed.
I love the size of my nexus7 so far there's not much I don't love about this tablet!I hear they are releasing a 10 inch soon so you could wait for that but I don't know if it will be tegra3 or Qualcomm. Again this tablet rocks! Rooted w/ stock ROM cwm recovery & trinity kernel.

I would recommend the Toshiba Excite 10 inch. It has HDMI out with an SD card slot. That's the tablet I would get if I wanted one.
Another good option is the Asus as you mentioned. You can look up the Samsung Galaxy Note Tablet. It comes with a stylus and I think it has app that directly support it. You can't go wrong with any of these. Just pick the features that you want and get it. I would suggest going to your local electronics store and trying them out to see which one you like as each of them have customized their Android OS with their custom apps and settings. All of the mentioned above have quad cores so you can't go wrong with that.
If you're looking for smaller/cheaper then you can go with the Samsung Galaxy Player 5. Its $200 and its what I use for my "tablet" experience. Its smaller and portable than the above but that may not be what you want. Note that this is a single core so you're sacrificing power and size but you gain portability.

If you are desperate for a larger tablet then you could pick up something like the Galaxy Tab. It's a bit older than the Nexus, but stil pretty decent, especially if you run ICS.
It's on for sale for £279 at carphone warehouse www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/m..._WIFI_16GB/HANDSET?portal=GLSHOP&promo=GLSHOP
Otherwise I'd recommend a Nexus 7.

I have the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, and i have been loving it so far! I haven't even needed to root it, i'm still stock and its quick with a beautiful screen! I got the 16GB WiFi version with a 32GB MicroSD b/c i watch TV on it while i'm at work. The battery life is just AMAZING! I don't think i've ever gone lower than 50%! And i watch shows and movies for HOURS! There is some noticeable lag every now and again, but its usually pretty peppy! And it comes stock with ICS, they have even rolled out 2 updates since i bought mine! Thats rare! No word yet on if it will get Jelly Bean, but it doesn't matter to me, i love this tabby! Good luck on your hunt!
A good tablet would be the Toshiba excite 10. It has a nice screen, tegra 3, several ports, and very good speakers. The best part is that it's only $300 at Costco.

Have 2013 version, want to upgrade 2014.

I love my note 10.1, but I really would love to upgrade to 2014 version, but I would keep the 2014 version for years. That seems like a much better upgrade. I got this in April of last year and very good condition. Kept it in case at all times and have cover and screen protector.Any tips on how to? Trade in, or how much I can sell it for? And where? Just my opinion.

There are plenty of Windows Tablets that are already a phenomeno deal like the Venue 8 Pro http://www.engadget.com/products/dell/venue/8-pro/
I am waiting for something just like that but with a 10 inch screen, Atom CPU with 4 GB RAM and Wacom.
In regards to your question on the new Note, if you have the 2012 Note 10.1, just go to your local retail store and compare the interface.
Phone UI, for example, the notification drawer pulls down from the top and covers the entire screen
Multi-Window, ie you can no longer have cascading windows like you can in Windows and in Note 10.1 2012

Why can't samsung make a tablet of this quality?

This is not a rant thread, this just a discussion. I don't understand why samsung doesn't produce such a high quality tablet like the s7. Glass and aluminium build quality, the new exynos chip, vulkan, big ass battery etc. I would like a tablet to pair with my phone, that would look like it's from the same "collection", but we only have the tab s2 with joke of a battery, mid specs and plastic build quality
I imagine cost would be exorbitant
Typically, manufacturers are gaining a reputation, then the reputation works for them. Also came from Samsung
can but will not. . the market is no to big for it
Because there isn't enough sales volume to justify it. Even Apple can't sustain their iPad line and had to increase the price by $100 with the iPad Pro.

That would be awesome. Straight competitor with the ipad. I would definately buy one. But im sure it would be expensive like others have said.
So what it would cost as much as an ipad, Apple still sells them. Right now the ipad has no competition in terms of a media consumption tablet. I own an air 2 but I would trade it for an android tablet with the same specs of the s7 edge and same build quality.
Tab S2 is pretty good though
I still have my Note 10.1 2014 edition and love it. Battery life is starting to falter as it is over 2 years old now... But other than that it's still kicking ass.

Same! I love mine! Especially since it got Lollipop. The build isn't as great: plastic bezel, faux leather back, but I still really like it. And even if you don't put a case on your phone, you should definitely put one with a flip cover on a tablet anyway.

Whichever way you cut it, Windows 10 isn't a tablet OS. I have a Surface Pro 3, and before that had a Surface 3, 2, and RT.
Whilst they are all very good machines, I can count on one hand the number of times I used them without a keyboard as a tablet - I'd almost invariably pick up an Android tablet instead.
I can't see the TabPro being any different.

For a tablet with the brilliant quality as S7, the tablet price will be expensive than S7. For a small market with a expensive price, that is not a good strategy.

That's just because you are used to using Windows a certain way. Tab Pro S with Windows 10 is infinitely better than Android, because now it can actually run decent applications and you don't have to worry about it not getting updates. The hardware isn't the best though, and would have wished for something larger and faster (surface pro 4 competitor with amoled screen).

That's just because you are used to using Windows a certain way. Tab Pro S with Windows 10 is infinitely better than Android, because now it can actually run decent applications and you don't have to worry about it not getting updates. Have to disagree. Most of the touch optimised W10 apps aren't a patch on their iOS or Android equivalents, or simply don't exist.
Yes, you can run "real" apps, but that isn't giving you a tablet experience.
Don't get me wrong, I like Windows 10, but a tablet OS it is not.

I know you can run Android on Windows via apps like Bluestacks, but why bother?
The other thing about using W10 as a tablet OS is generally lousy standby time. I can pick up any of my Android tablets after a few days of non use and there will still be a decent amount of battery left - not iPad levels but good enough.
My Surface Pro 3 (and Surface 3, 2, and RT before) would generally have discharged itself completely long before the Android tablets.

Dave
