Just recently rooted my old Samsung S4 with help from this forum. What i am looking to do is use it as an mp3 player only. its not activated to any cell phone service and only use able on wifi. What i would like to know/do is clear out as much memory as possible. is there a way to get just the min operating system? the reason i would like to do this is because rhapsody allows me to download songs and play them when and where wifi is not available. im not really interested in any other apps. Thanks for any help.
OSes with just the essential apps are known as BareBone ROMs.
Install a barebone Kitkat ROM on it and use Dalvik Runtime.
Stay away from Lollipop or Marshmallow ROMS because ART Runtime needs more internal storage.
And if you couldn't find any barebone ROMs, simply install CyanogenMod 11 on it and remove the unwanted stuff manually with some app like Titanium backup.
Also underclock the processor to 1GHz or something for better battery life .
ok will look into that. will installing a rom like that erase all internal memory? like formatting a pc hard drive and reinstalling the OS? thanks for the help
If you want more internal memory, you can use chinese PIT file... But i must warm you, it's dangerous! Your phone can be bricked!! Otherwise if you want more battery life use airplane mode. It will close network. Still you can open Wifi... Underclock CPU...

I am new to the WM platform, and have been flashing my Tilt like crazy. I am trying to decide if it is better to go with a minimal ROM and install the addon's via CABS that I want, or if it is better to get a ROM like DUTTY's that has 98% of what I use already installed.
Coming from the Palm world, there were advantages of moving apps into the ROM as it would free the space for storage. A typical application install would use the storage space for both application and data.
Is this true with Kaiser/Tilt and WM? Is the 256Mb of ROM used only by applications that are either 'flashed' or loaded via the ExtendedRom Unlock and 128Mb of RAM used by cab file installs, and other installations?
Finally, when installing an application on the MicroSD card, does it first have to copy to the phones ram and then run, or is the memory directly accessed?
Thanks!
I like em lite
If you are going to use all the HTC software in Dutty's then I say to load his ROM. They are very good. I'm a fan of a lite ROM and use XDA-live since I choose to not use any HTC software.
ROM Goes Unused?
So does the extra space of your ROM go unused by any applications? Say you install a lite, + quick menu, PocketCM, and a few other goodies that are included in a fuller ROM..is that now taking up space where you would put ringtones, themes, data files, etc. in your RAM.
I guess my question is more like this:
Is the ROM/RAM issue similar to palm, or can I think of the ROM as a PC hard drive, and the RAM just that..used by what is running only.
I don't believe the ROM is just a like a pc hard drive since I have to flash to get stuff in there, but I wasn't sure if that was just certain portions of the ROM where the OS lives.

You can say that ROM is like PC's hard drive. A space of this ROM is reserved from the OS and the rest is free for the user.
When you flash with a lite ROM the space reserved for the OS is smaller and the opposite when you flash with a full version.

So I assume that when looking at the memory tool, this unreserved portion of this ROM is listed as "Storage" and the Memory/RAM is listed as "Program"
This clears it up for me.
Thank You!!
OK...Let's get something out of the way before anyone start getting irate with me and saying things they shouldn't be about this thread does not belong here...
THIS IS NOT A ROM...does it have to do with Development? I believe so....
We have always been instructed by every ROM Devs that we have to WIPE Everything in order to get our ROMs stable and running as it should...well this post goes counter to what you've been told by almost any post on XDA-Dev
I am addicted to flashing ROMs to see which best suits my needs, however the pain of having to install my apps (I have more than 150...don't ask) usually kept me from trying as many as I would like to....started thinking about how DT APP2SD work...since it is a partition that is completely separated from where the ROM is flashed...WHY DO WE HAVE TO WIPE IT??? So, I started flashing different ROMs, from ICS, Gingerbread to even Froyo to test my theory. Low and behold...more than 95% of my apps held intact (albeit no DATA - you can use Titanium or MyBackup Root to restore the Apps Data) with no hiccups when running from one ROM to another. I have flashed from AOSP to SENSE to MIUI...same result, my apps remain intact as long as I wipe EVERYTHING EXCEPT the SD-EXT...DALVIK CACHE HAS TO WIPE...even though part of it is on the Extension!!!
The reason why is simple. Any DEVs that baked DT APP2SD into their ROMs essentially call for this partition at boot...and once the ROM call for this partition...all the apps that are located in there still remain and the ROM uses it as if it was part of the ROM.
Also, I have even tested it so extensively that I flashed a Sense, an AOSP and ICS independently - after making sure my ROM was stable, reboot to RECOVERY and plug my phone to my PC running Linux....automatically the SD EXT pops up and I dropped all my apps (again, more than 150) to it...and KABOOM!!! Upon reboot...all my apps started showing up.
Again, I have no intent to take space from the DEVs who are doing a GREAT job supporting our phones....
I am posting this in the hope of helping those who flash often and also the Devs themselves from having to reinstall all their apps everytime they flash a new ROM.
If the MODs feels like this does not belong here...please feel free to move it. I think that it could play an integral role in development to all the Devs out there, hence why I am posting it here.
PS: I am not here every day, I have two little ones and a beautiful wife that I try spend as much time with...so please be patient with me if you PM me for more details on how to do this.
If this helps you in any way, please hit the thanks button...
Again, thanks to all the great works the Devs are doing!!!!
I have done this before and it does work. The only thing that keeps me from doing this is the lack of the ability to do a batch data only restore with titanium. Am I missing something? How do u quickly restore the data to your apps?
do a batch, and at the top, select data only.

Ooooohhhh......how did I not put 2 and 2 together. Thanks.
Would it not depend on the ROM your flashing?
i've been doing this for awhile, jus thought it was common knowledge. there have been some apps that FC, but i'm a FLASH chronic, and reinstall apps wud suck. ROOT UNINSTALLER is also a great app to do BU's.
I've done the same thing a couple times in the past (between CM and Sense) but always had nagging doubts that I was screwing something up somehow... Good to know that someone has taken the time to confirm that this is actually a reasonably safe process! I just had to do a nightmare manual one-by-one app restore on a ROM I flashed but I'm glad that now I can comfortably use this trick in the future.
Thanks man.
The reason for a full wipe is that most people don't have their sd card partitioned.I myself have partitioned mine and do exactly what you suggested and it does work,i figured this out after wiping the sd-exta few times,1 time i decided not to,i noticed my apps were still there after i installed another rom.Of course if you have a google account, google keeps your apps and contacts backed up.
Would this also apply for those that have partitioned sd and have a Sense 3.0~3.5 ROM installed? Question is because some devs, if not all, set the rom to save part of the rom on sd-ext partition.
I have been doing this all the time for sense and asop roms, works great. Off topic - wiping more than once is BS unless you have bad nand or using bad wiping program.
Happy to see that some of you find this information useful. I just didn't want to get screamed at for posting it here.
It's a little I can help with in contrast to the great work the devs are doing

It should have no impact because essentially your app folder is where everything is kept. If the Dev add some system info to the Ext it won't mess with your apps.

Hi all,
Background:
I bought an android phone from Chinavasion. It is described as
Wholesale Waterproof Android Phone - Mini Android Phone From China
I cannot identify its device type which is why I am posting here. The play store identifies the phone as
Alps Ratech72_wet_rlk_lca
The phone has a MT6572 Dual Core 1GHz CPU and runs Android version 4.2.2.
I want to increase the ram of the phone. It is 256MB. I want to use virtual memory. I have a 2GB sdcard in the phone. I am planning to give it 512MB. Can I do this without rooting? If I have to root it, then how do I do so? I would prefer not to use an exploit.
Anyone any suggestions?
Pranav
Hiya,
I went around looking for some hints on this phone as well but didn't come up with anything.
I got my device yesterday and I understand your issue. I have no sollution for you but I do have a solid work-around to get some more app space which, I'm afraid, involves rooting.
Activate USB debugging, connect your device to a PC. Download and run Kingo Android Root and follow the instructions.
After that I "adb'ed" to make the phone choose the SD-Card as the default installing path. Run th following command with adb.
Code:
# adb shell pm set-install-location 2
For the apps that wouldn't move to the SD-Card, due to su issues, I moved manually with the app called Move app to SD card.
Grant the app root access to sort out the apps not willing to move by themselves.
With this sorted I now have 500 mb of apps installed on the SD-Card. I am running low on memory now due to some parts of the app still installs on the phone memory.
Not a real app2sd script but it certanly will get you some more apps installed!
Another hint: When I ordered the phone they said it supported 16 GB SD-Cards only but I'm running flawless with a 64 GB card!
I'd love to see a costum recovery (since I don't know chinese) and CM for this device, but since it's not a western phone I guess we'll have to settle with stock.
Hope this helps.
A few hours has gone by and without doing any backups I replaced some system apps and now I can bearly work the phone! Haha.. Thou shall not do this sort of thing after 2 h sleep.
Anyway, don't be afraid of doing what I wrote in the previous post, it worked just fine! I'm hoping you'll do it, it's the only way I can think of to get the system files back. :-S
Since there seem to be no one but you and me who have bought there phones..
edit: Sorted out my problem, got it running again! However, if you are going to root it, please do share the stock files! :-S

to use virtual memory you would have to root it and plus you cant get that much more ram with virtual memory, 256mb of ram on a 4.2.2 phone? i hope you got a good deal for it because 256mb will get you nowhere with nowadays google play apps updates hogging all the ram.
Some more info. Appearently the phone is also called "Nanex" and/or Z18 Mini Smartphone.. Maybe it's called different things in different regions?
Move to SD card SUCCESSFUL!
Im so glad there was this thread, it seems like nobody else knows about this awesome little phone!
I followed the instructions that "pingaan" posted and it worked! now i can install as many apps to SD card as i want, awesome!
I'm glad I could help.
I've been using this device for about a week now and I have to say that the stock rom is horrible! There are many flaws and no updates incoming, as far as I know.
Another disappinting thing is that the screen material is >VERY< easily scratched so DO NOT order this phone without screen protection.
I am going to order a new one cause I love that it's so small! It's even smaller than my old "dumbphone", but I don't see myself using stock rom. I'd rather not use the phone at all.
I'm going to try to compile a custom recovery and port a suitable CM11 rom to this device for proper usage.
Don't expect it any time soon, cause my days are normally filled up with family, house and work.
Regards.

everything about this phone is pretty good for the size, except the ram is so ridiculously small, i've tried to add virtual ram with link2sd and partitioned sd card, but apparently link2sd won't work without hacing the bootloader unlocked first, but i can't unlock the bootloader as it seems like there doesn't seem to be proper drivers for this phone.
if you are planning to do a custom rom on there, please let us know how when and how you managed to get the bootloader unlocked plz! :fingers-crossed:
Since I noticed the screen being easily scratched I ordered a new device from a different retailer, along with a plastic screen protection.
There is an interesting thing about this. The bootanimations are different and there's also a reboot option in the powermenu on the new.
Maybe the bootloader already is open? I mean, if you can change the power menu you need to alter the framework, right? The bootanimation is quite easy to change with root access however.
Have you checked the built-in recovery? There is actually an option for installing "update.zip"..
Do you have a proper app2sd script that I can try out on my old device?
Cheers...
Anyone have a backup of the ROM for ratech72_wet_rlk_lca ?? I plugged in a MTK Tool and I seem to have corrupted the system ;-( ... Didn't even get a chance to backup!

Anyone find a copy of the ROM I need it also?
Hello,
Sorry for the non explicit title but I couldn't be clear!
I am new with this but I know some stuff about android like I know Kernels, Recovery, ROM etc.
However, I was wondering these things, I am not up to date:
1) What is UBER?
2) What can contain a Kernel that a Rom can't? Is the Kernel like the heart and the ROM more like the body? It's sometimes really ambiguous for me
3) WTF Is that external memory system lol, is that possible to use the external SD and move some apps without formatting it only for the phone?
4) I like CM 13, really like it and especially because of the Theme that you can change and who change now everything and not only the desktop °_° but I was wondering what kernel should I use with CM13, I mean like a specific kernel who could be better than the CM Base
5) I tried many roms, CM, Beanstalk, DominionOS but in every case I coudn't get a functional GAPPS, with OpenApps Aroma I don't have the Playstore, with the A-GAPSS I have it but it crashes sometimes (play service fc ++edit: i will watch for permission > result: it still doesn't work and fc++) and this is like I can't use snapchat because of this... Any idea about this?
Thanks to all, have a nice day

1) Uber? It is a taxi service... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ubercab&hl=en
2) The kernel is essentially the interface between the OS and the hardware, so your analogy is very accurate.
3) I am not sure what you asking about external storage... it is the SD card when it is in Portable mode. (assuming Marshmallow) you cannot install apps to it in portable mode (external). This should give you what you need to know: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/prod_answer_detail/a_id/109134/p/1449,9582
4) There is no "best kernel"... kernels are always a trade off, performance for battery life and vis-versa, the best anyone can tell you is try and see which works best for you. Remember to dirty flash ROM between trying different custom kernels to fix any changes to the ram disk and other /boot changes by the previous kernel.
5) Ask in the ROM thread for the recommended Gapps package for each ROM, if the recommended one doesn't work, then post in that thread and you should get feedback.
Hey thanks man!
Uber as a kernel thing I mean is that something godlike like linaro was in the old time?
Oh so the "problem" about moving things like in older phone is about 6.0 and not about the phone himself?
Hmm okay I will try them so!
And gonna ask cm post then, thanks

Oh... lol... I didn't even think of the Uber toolchain... It is a toolchain built by Chet Kener, actually similar to Linaro, I don't know that kernels built with the UberTC are any better than other kernels and the toolchains tries to take key elements of Linaro and SaberMod and combine them... As with any kernel, YMMV, so try them and see what works best for you.
Yes, Marshmallow handles file systems differently, especially when it is portable storage (external storage)... Marshmallow, without root and third party apps, cannot put apps on the SD card, it is just storage space. But the card can be adopted as internal storage, and if you google around, you will see there are ways to split the card into 2 partitions, part of it as internal and part as external storage.
Hi!
Thanks for the info!
I'll try to find any of those third app as I am rooted to move, because the class 10 of my sd card isn't enough and then it's laggy as hell, while I still have 4 gb used in my internal... Like not legit <_<
I already knew that I make partitions on my µsd ^^ But I never tried or so, I will try it soon I guess
Hey there, I am back! Just tried to partition the sd card via TWRP but when I boot the phone after partitionning + swap the phone says that the memory isn't compatible, any help ?
Hi people,
I made a factory reset on my Multilaser (M7Sqc v1.3) tablet* and intended to personalize some features to let the tablet really light for games. Currently I have it properly rooted (Kingo root) but I can't find a way to remove or replace unnecessary apps the same way I use to do on other Android devices and install only what I want.
Even after recovery it mantains some unwanted bloatware (like Baidu browser, FIFA 15:UT, DU speed booster, and some other @$#$%[email protected] ****!!!!). Sorry for my language, but I am getting really upset because every atempt of mine is wast of time. When the tablet restarts it factory resets and remove any changes I made.
I dont have experience in changing or edit the firmware or ROM of the phone but I want to learn it soon. But I like the simple way!! Every tutorial I read let me more confused. They request installing lots of unnecessary stuff and it "takes forever".
I already know hot to enter recovery mode on the phones/tablets, I know how to root the device, I have dual boot on my computer (WIN7 & UBUNTU) and so I can use any default application (editors), terminal commands (even with superuser), pack or unpack .zip .rar .apk, I know some basics of ADB communication, etc
I WANT to CHOOSE the defaut app of my device and CUSTOMIZE it. Where to start??
Which files I have to edit or replace to avoid factory reset on every restart?
How to load a new ROM or edit my own?? (I have a Backup of the device prior to the rooting process or factory reset)
Can I use ROMs made by others and edit them?
*actually it is my 2 6yr nephews and they gave it to me to improve it since it was lacking memory, was slow and often freezing. They use it mainly for playing.
Hi !
The best way to deal with system apps and for this you need to have root access is to use Titanium backup. From it you can either delete or freeze the unwanted apps but be careful with deletion , I would suggest freezing
As from the modifying point of view I would recomend this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2195858
Good luck !
