Manual mode scene selection locked to 8mp? - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi, today i got my z5 from three UK. when i change to manual mode in 20 or 23 mp i cant select any scn. its just grey disable. but if i select 8mp then i can select. is it for everybody? or just three firmware?
model : e6653
build number : 32.0.A.4.11

It's like that even on the Z3, no idea why. Well maybe they thought processing is too battery intensive/heat concerns?

Don't make sense. My htc m9 have scene mode in 21mp. Camera is the reason I upgrade to xperia.

Check out the thread in the Z5 General forum. While Sony has enabled 23/20 MP modes, the 8 MP setting seems to be better and has more options. So far, the conclusion is that the Z5 actually combines pixels for processing, resulting in a super high fidelity 8 MP image, and allows it to handle more, tricky, lighting conditions. It's a bit hard to believe at first, but the 8 MP mode takes better pics in most situations (and better than other phone cameras). Check out the low light pics near the end of the thread.

Will Z3 still need rooting in order to get 20MP in Superior Auto Mode?

Someone posted this about the Z2 and why you need to root it in order to get the best camera resolution:
Basically it gives you the option to do things you normally couldn't. Install custom software. Delete apps that normally can't be deleted. Modifications to things like camera (eg the phone currently only uses 8mp in superior auto, but the mod allows it to use 20mp in superior) all kinds of tweaks and stuff that without root access, you wouldn't be able to install.
So does anyone know if the Z3 will have this issue resolved or will you still need to root it in order to get 20MP in Superior Auto Mode? I think it's so stupid that you have to root it in order to get that. It should be a choice, not forced. Hopefully it won't need to be.
Any info would be appreciated.

Hey Electrash,
Sorry, did you mean yes it's been resolved on the Z3 or yes the Z3 will still need to be rooted in order to get 20/21MPs in Superior Auto Mode?
Thanks,

Yes, you will need root to use 20.7 in SA.
But why do you need it, you need to have screen like cinema paper to watch 20.7 mp in native size.

Ugghh ok. lol Thanks Electrash!
I just want the best. lol
Well when I transfer those pics to my pc and view them, I would think the difference would be noticeable? I mean 8 vs 20.7 sounds like a huge difference to me, even if both are still Sony-based. It's not quite cinema size, but my PC screen (21") is still much bigger than any phone screen I'll ever have.
What u guys think?

Check this site 75inch*50inch is size of native picture at 19.4MP.
Also I doubt that you have 5600*3600 screen resolution, that means half of this pixels won't even be shown, unless you zoom in a lot.
But again, who takes picture to zoom like telescope.

Ok took a look at it. Thank you.
Well that's the thing....... I wouldn't say I zoom in a lot, but sometimes I do. It's just nice to know that when I do, the sharpness won't fade away.
So you think the quality of Superior Auto Mode at 8MPs will still be really nice? I just don't get why they can't let ppl choose for themselves? I hate being forced to choose stuff. That's one of the main reasons why I stick with Android over like Apple is b/c of the choice, the freedom. If I got it I may root it, or not. Who knows.

8MP is more then enough for everything that we "little" people want to do with pictures. Trust me, I was against that, but since I research a lot, I found out that I don't need more then 8MP.
In my situation, I have 15.6inch HD screen. That means even 2MP are enough to be shown in native size, everything beyond that is for sharpness.
Why they don't let you choose, well I don't know, but I heard that SA downscale 20mp in 8MP for better image. But don't use this as true because I didn't search for this one.
Take a research if that is true, and then try to research how downscale makes photo.
(lumia 1020 Downscale her 41mp to around 15 as I remember)

lol I dunno....... I have a Sony camera, 16.2 megapixels.......... and it's a fantastic camera! Carl Zeiss lens and everything! So I am picky about that stuff.
How does downscaling a 20MP pic to 8MPs make it better?
I actually tested the Nokia Lumia 1020 this past week for a phone survey/focus group I'm doing. It wasn't a bad phone really, but 41MP camera? It's a joke man. The pics came out like nothing special at all. Obviously when it comes to cameras, there's a lot more than just MPs at play (focus, light sensitivity, flash, etc). But Sony knows that and incorporates a great deal of that knowledge into their cameras and phone cameras too. I'm not surprised you said 41 to 15MPs for the Lumia, because I swear, the pics I took on the 1020 LOOKED like they were not even 15MPs. I don't get why they advertise 40MPs if it gets downscaled? At least with the Z3 you can get 20.7MPs if you use normal mode. I just don't know man. We'll see what happens.

Electrash.........I think I got my answer:
Saw this review on the Z3. Some interesting things on the camera on page 3. Sample pics at bottom look pretty sharp to me, even when zoomed in: http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Sony-Xperia-Z3-Review_id3795/page/3
The Sony Xperia Z3's camera user interface is mostly easy to use, especially when you're sticking with Sony's Superior Auto mode, which attempts to automatically pick the best settings for you, depending on the scene you're trying to photograph, and tends to be pretty accurate most of the time. By default, the Sony Xperia Z3's Superior Auto mode shoots at 8 MP. It does use the full resolution of the 20 MP sensor, but scales the pictures down - this way, the user ends up with high-quality 8 MP photos of 'easy-to-share' size that don't exhibit less visible artifacts when viewed in actual size.
We were, frankly, surprised to see how natural the color representation of images taken with the Sony Xperia Z3 is. Sony usually boosts the color saturation and contrast a bit (or a lot), resulting in flashy hues, which are not representing the scene in front of the lens in a completely credible manner. With the Z3, however, Sony tweaked takes a what-you-see-is-what-you-get approach, producing natural colors. The automatic white balance measurements are valid with most every shot, leaving no weird overcasts in the scene. Last, but not least, the phone is able to grab a fine amount of detail..

I zoom in and crop on most pics and wife's S5 is better than my z2 as when I try and zoom and crop my pics are lacking in detail so I think in some cases more mp are better. Depends on what you want. 8mp is not always enough for certain situations.

[Q] Photography Tips?

One of the reasons I got the Zperia Z3 was because I was under the impression that it had a great camera. Now all I have read on this forum is about the poor camera quality, especially in low light.
Do you have any tips or tricks on how to take better pictures with the Z3? Special Manuel settings? Use a different Camera app like the Google Camera? What works best for taking low light pictures? Etc?

:good: hilarious!
Generally speaking, the Z3 isn't terribly different than other smartphones, but it is a lot more configurable.
In super low light, I actually find that the mode superior auto chooses will work pretty well.
In good light, I find the key is to remember that the Z3 will have a "shallower" range of focus (depth of focus) than other smartphones, so making sure you tap the area you want the picture to be focused on is important.
Finally, the dedicated camera button is dual-stage, the first is to lock focus, this is a great feature. The more you use this, the more you'll find that you'll get the pictures you want.
Pick manual mode, 20mp, touch to focus, and use the on screen camera button. Using the physical button introduces a lot of camera shake which really shows up on 20mp shots.
I find the 20mp shots come out brilliant.
Waiting on an update to improve Superior auto.
I have found that :
>for general photos default mode is ok
> for panorama shots google camera
> for macros Camera - FV-5 manual settings 15.5 MP 16:9, really good
Have a Z3 D6603 , no Pink spots

I am not sure why people go on about poor low light, it is not the best out there but it is hardly poor. It's better than most point and shoot cameras. Each iteration of the Z series cameras improves slightly on the quality.
Here is a shot, handheld low light ISO2000, superior auto with a Sony Z1

Here is an early firmware Z1 low light ISO800

Manual mode will give you the best results, plus allow you to get 20MP shots.
Here is a macro'ish shot manual mode, at full size you can see the pollen details, depth of field shallow due to the F2 aperture (again old Sony Z1)

Camera auto mode is horrible

Is anyone experiencing this, I don't see many threads?
Tonight I did a camera comparison with a friends IPhone 6 and the IPhone 6 was far superior in every sense. Images from the Z3 generally seem grainy and lack detail and sharpness.
I see a few people have mentioned that the camera is better of you manually set the options. This isn't what a smartphone is for when you need to snap a quick shot, by the time you've done all that you've missed the moment.
I swapped my LG G3 (which also took better shots) for this and I'm really underwhelmed by the camera on the Z3, which ironically is its main selling point.
Can anyone suggest some third party camera apps which would perform better?
Also do you think Sony will fix this, i owned the original Z and can recall having some camera issues. I didn't think they would still be present 4 years on.
The Z3 camera was hyped up so much, I really can't see why. Great on paper, not so good in the real world.

I installed Pro Capture and it seems a lot better. Sony is doing half a job. You cannot supply excellent hardware and not take advantage of it with the software. It seems most people are impressed by the specs of the camera more than its ability to actually take a picture! I cannot believe how much hype surrounding this camera there was.
Have you tried the xposed module 'superiorauto 20mp'? which forces the SA mode to shoot at 20megapixels?

Poor Camera Results

My pictures are coming out flat, with very poor contrast and colour rendition. I've owned mainly Samsungs before, and their cameras, even lower in MP, have given excellent results. I was expecting something lot better with a 20MP camera, but the quality I'm getting is comparable to maybe a 5MP camera. I use the Superior Auto mode, with full 20MP resolution.
Anyone else disappointed with the camera as well?
I'm not disappointed with it but seems some people are. Have you looked in the General section? There's a thread for voicing your opinion on the cam: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2887635

I just talked about that few days ago...
I was comparing Note4 and Z3 and Note 4 kicked Z3s ass...
Z3 can take great photos outside when there's a lot of light but in lower light conditions photos are terrible...
You can always switch to manual shooting mode and set few things but you won't get nothing special...
That's the only thing I would like to see improved in next gen Xperia...
I'm absolutely satisfied with everything else..
OK, that and maybe X-pen, Sammy has S-pen so why shouldn't we have X-pen
It's amazing addon for many things (I'm using S-Pen to sign documents in PDF, without needing to print them out) and emailing them after signing...

funky0308 thanks for your feedback. I feel exactly the same.. Z3 is a great device, EXCEPT for the camera. I've used Note, Note2, 3 AND 4, but never found much use for the Spen other than scribbling and drawing etc. in my free time. So I don't miss it at all. A 5.5" screen, however, would help tremendously.

Manual Camera

Hello guys. I have Xperia X model right now, thinking of upgrading to XZ. For the current owners, i have a question about the manual camera. It goes full manual on all resolutions or only on 8Mp mode? Is manual focus better than auto focus in macro photography? My Xperia X has a big macro focus distance in photo mode, but it can focus closer and much faster in video, so my guess is that with manual focus, i can reach the sensor limitations. And how is photo quality in general? I used all modes possible, but i am still not impressed by xperia X quality, it's about 2015 top tier cameras, but nowhere near s7, g5, nexus 6p. Not even huawei p9 level. Is xz better in this aspect? i am not talking about fast focus, or good image stabilisation in videos. I am talking about pure quality photos, low noise, good processing and colours. Thanks in advance and sorry for my poor english, i am from Europe.
Being from Europe is absolutely no excuse for not knowing English =P But u did pretty well IMHO.
XZ manual mode is enabled on full 23MP and pretty much everything expect scene recognition is available at max resolution. About manual focus - its not better or beyond normal AF, only different, i guess, is that you can set minimal macro focus and then adjust phone distans until you catch it. Thats not much improvent in my opinion...
If I were you, i would wait until next year for next flagship, unless you have buyer for your Xperia X with good price
EDIT: I have checked macro manual focus distans and my XZ is capable of focusing on object about 11cm far from lenses.
I would get the new 5 inch pixel, but it's butt ugly. There's no other phone in 2016 that i would get...

With this I highly agree. I had so much hope with XZ but it went down when they announced it.
Not because of the design or manual camera. It's just the battery life. I think Sony should go back to 3000+ mAh.
Don't you think?
I get pretty decent battery life despite the average battery size. The XZ consistently performs better than its specs would have you believe (everywhere except camera lol).
