I'm on a rooted nexus 5 running stock kitkat 4.4.4 and xposed framework. I have no wish to update the operating system. I was able to stop the system update notifications in the past by simply disabling 3 receivers :
service:com.google.android.gms.update.SystemUpdateService$ Receiver
com.google.android.gms.update.SystemUpdateService$ ActiveReceiver
com.google.android.gms.update.SystemUpdateService$ SecretCodeReceiver
This worked for a while, then the system update notification appeared again! This time, to get rid of the notification I needed to use several adb commands:
1. adb shell su -c pm disable com.google.android.gms/.update.SystemUpdateService$ActiveReceiver
2. adb shell su -c pm disable com.google.android.gms/.update.SystemUpdateService$Receiver
3. adb shell su -c pm disable com.google.android.gms/.update.SystemUpdateService$SecretCodeReceiver
4. adb shell su -c pm disable com.google.android.gsf/.update.SystemUpdateActivity
5. adb shell su -c pm disable com.google.android.gsf/.update.SystemUpdatePanoActivity
6. adb shell su -c pm disable com.google.android.gsf/.update.SystemUpdateService
7. adb shell su -c pm disable com.google.android.gsf/.update.SystemUpdateService$Receiver
8. adb shell su -c pm disable com.google.android.gsf/.update.SystemUpdateService$SecretCodeReceiver
That worked - for a while..... ?
The notification to update to 5.0.1 has reappeared again. What else should I do to stop it this time?
Appreciate any help.
That's a lot of work. And you're missing out on a bunch of pretty important security updates.

Like it the way it is.
I recommend you installing three apps to disable this fully:
AppOpsXposed
MyAndroidTools
Servicely
In appopsxposed what you need to do is to disable the "wake up" function of google play services as well as other brothers of it (google services framework)
MyAndroidTools
to disable update service simply go to the services tab in it and search for google play services:
On the upper right side click Full/Short button and you should be able to see the full extension file for each services
Search Update$Service and disablle all related services for it (there are 4, policyintent, updaterservice and I forgot the last two)
Servicely is to stop the all in all process and services of Gsm/Gcm which reboots the update service(dont know if this is a leak)
just install it into priv-app and give octal permission 0777 and select google play service and frameworks as a hitlist and you should have no worries about anything.
Let me know when this helped you and please press thanks if it does try it first it wont consume much time
Phantom, you're a life saver. I'll try what you suggest and let you know if it worked.
Thank you.
Also dont forget to disable broadcast receiver for system$update services located in.. Well broadcast receiver haha
Just use myandroidtools
Click broadcast receiver and navigate to system, find gplay services and type in systemupdate, again there are 4 receivers for it disable all of it
OK. I installed all 3 apps.
1. Did the appOpsXposed part.
2. Have trouble in Myandroidtools. None of the items have Update$Service in them. (No $). I'm attaching a screenshot so you can tell me which 4 to disable.
3. I installed Servicely but, how do I "install it into priv-app" ?
Thank you.

I messed up.
Went to Google play services, clicked on system update (I think, can't remember) which had a checkmark in its select box and now it disappeared!
Help.
(I did a nandroid backup before starting but maybe there a simpler way).

You didn't messed up just relax
It disappeared because it was moved back to queue.
To disable a service and a receiver let me remind you to click the name not the checkbox, if you click the checkbox it will reappear again.
Heres the system update service and receiver i disabled for you and my wakelocks for Gplayservices as well as my partial wakelocks in my N5 with heavy tweaks on my battery life, shown by BBS(better battery stats)
I dont have any wakeups from Gplayservices to be honest
and here is my batt life with some data usage on

Download root explorer or any explorer that can do a read/write(basically almost all of them such as solid explorer)
download the apk for servicely you can find a lot inside the huge cloud of the internet haha
once downloaded copy the servicely apk using the explorer of your choice and navigate to root/system/priv-app and paste it there. Press and hold the apk it should prompt you with many choices, find permissions there and put check on all the boxes for permissions
dont forget that you need to enable r/w or read/write permission first for your explorer or else you wont be able to edit permissions or move an apk file inside the system/priv-app
All done and everything worked. System update gone. Thank you.

I'm still on kitkat and have no desire to move to lollipop. Until now I've successfully avoided the upgrade to 5.0 by disabling*3*receivers*:

com.google.android.gms.update.SystemUpdateService$*ActiveReceiver*-*this*will*check*for*OTA*on*connectivity*change.
com.google.android.gms.update.SystemUpdateService$*SecretCodeReceiver*-*this*will*check*for*OTA*when*your*phone*"handles"*the*secret*code.
This has worked fine till now. But suddenly the system 5.01 notice has appeared. I think this happened after I updated my Xposed Gravitybox but I'm not sure.
Anyone know how I can disable the 5.01 system update notification without disabling all notifications of Google play services in system /apps?
Thanks

I took the easy way. Since the update appeared after the latest Gravitybox version update, I used Titanium backup to restore Gravitybox to the previous version and voila! Things are back to normal and the system update no longer appears. I wonder what GB broke.
But I will keep your response for future use. Can all these receivers really be disabled without problem? Is there somewhere that tells me what each receiver does rather than guess and break something?
I misspoke. System update for 5.0.1 has reappeared. Update.zip is not present.
All SystemUpdate receivers are disabled using Autostarts.
There has to be some way to stop this system notification. It was blocked for a long time. I don't know what has changed.
Help.

GravityBox has nothing to do with OTA services.
If the services/receivers are disabled properly, then there is NO WAY the OTA can be downloaded. Try disabling all of them using adb as mentioned previously. All of them are solely for the purpose for OTA so you will not break anything other than OTA by disabling them (that's also why there are individual services/receivers for each function..).
Also, blocking the notification is a bad idea. It still downloads (and also wakelocks). The OTA notification also isn't provided by Play Services, it's provided by the system itself.
Thank you again.
I will connect to my laptop and go the adb way you recommend.
Feedback:
Thank you Elluel. I followed your adb instructions, rebooted, and the system update notice disappeared. Thank you!
On a separate but related issue, on several of the adb commands, the response (before disabling the receiver) included something about "... waste of memory...... security risk..... please fix...."
Any idea what that might be about?

1. This first step was originally found by @deathdefiler and thought it might help people so I've presented a neat manual to get started spoofing.
You need to root your phone
dont matter if you use a autoroot oneclickroot or what ever you prefer
Because we will be deleting (or NOT as mentioned in step 2) root later.
Just make sure SuperSu(optional for cm/lineage users) and busybox is installed
after your phone is rooted and
busybox: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox
are installed
go to playstore and download this exactly
(GPS Joystick Fake GPS Location)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theappninjas.gpsjoystick
by dev. The app ninjas
as while youre in playstore also download (/system/app mover Root) by dev. j4velin
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.j4velin.systemappmover
now openup /system/app mover and search for fake gps joystick
tap it and choose yes or ok to move it to /system/app
At this point you should reboot your phone( MUST DO )!
Once your phone is rebooted you can unroot your phone
Even if you unroot Gps joystick will remain in /system/app
Now go into your phone location settings
Set location modus to Device only
I also set google location service off otherwise it will go back to high accuracy mode.
Now we can open Fake gps joystick and go to settings from menu in the top left corner
Make sure that these following options are on
". Enable System Mode
Disable Location Service
Enable A-GPS reset. "
Now Restart your device for changes to take effect
thats it now we can start fake gps choose location of your liking
open pokenmon go and start playing (make sure loction is on device only mode)
If you want your location to work back normal
for example playing pokemon go normal or use googlemaps
then open fake gps settings and make sure Disable location service is set to off
Reboot your device and your good to go
Note by @reis1996 : In settings menu change "Background Handler" to another value from default to remove the time lag between spoofs. It varies for different devices

Optional step for users who want to keep root/run custom ROMs
NOTE: YOU HAVE TO HAVE A CM/LINEAGE BASED ROM FOR THIS STEP TO WORK
NO MAGISK!!! OR SUPERSU!!!
2. The next step is to temporarily disabled root but still have root access
*****NOUGAT USERS DON'T FLASH ANYTHING*****
Pokemon checks for root status and SELinux status
iSU is an app made @bhb27
Head over to the iSU thread and flash (for 6.0.1 and below as nougat just needs the app installed)
a)iSU kernal file. permissive if your selinux is already permissive / enforcing if your selinux is enforcing
You can check your seLinux status of your phone in settings>about phone.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...le-app-to-deactivate-activate-t3478348/page56
b)use the iSU app
To change your build.prop file of your phone
This makes the phone think its not rooted
In the prop editor in the app, set all values to green/safe.
Next set root deactivated and seLinux to enforcing.
The app has an inbuilt safety net checker to see if you pass safety net.
Note that you should toggle root and selinux status to pass safety net via the iSU app only.
as soon as i move gps fake location app to system it disappears, and i have no means to open it up. i did cf autoroot.
also i have galaxy s6, where do i find settings below.
Now go into your phone location settings
Set location modus to Device only
I also set google location service off

Did you restart the phone after making the GPS a system app. RESTART IS A MUST AFTER MAKING ANY APP SYSTEM APP
OK a little more information would be nice. What ROM are you running? Android version? Stock?
My advice for now would be to use a system APP uninstaller and remove the app. Then use another app ( various apps are present in play store) to make the GPS app a system app. Then unroot

Yes. If you are on nougat just install the app and don't flash anything. You will then have to toggle root and selinux status through that app only
Since there's no thread related to safe-to-remove system bloatware/googleware, I decided to make one.
I'm counting on your help to expand this list.
Tested
Chrome
Alternatives: Firefox, Brave, Waterfox.
Or you could simply uninstall it as a system APP and reinstall it as a user APP. There's definitely no need for Chrome to be a system APP.
Contacts
Alternatives: Simple Contacts Pro, fully open-source (paid or free if you download it through F-Droid, but won't get advanced customizations), Contacts+.
I also advise you to remove Google Contacts as a system APP and reinstall it as an user APP if you wish to keep it, there's no reason for Google Contacts to be a system APP.
Gmail
This one actually depends on your email provider, since I don't use gmail at all, I completely uninstalled this.
Also I suggest looking at ProtonMail, it's an email provider mostly focused on user data protection (through strict Swiss data protection laws) and privacy.
Then again, if you wish to keep this APP, I suggest uninstalling it and reinstall it as an user APP.
Digital Wellbeing
If you use this functionality on settings you may want to keep it, I uninstalled it.
Also I noticed that ever since I uninstalled this APP, there's an error on logcat showing that something failed to connect to this APP. However it's just a log, despite that everything seems to be working great.
Google Files/Files Go
If you managed to upgrade from Android 8 to Android 9, you most likely kept the standard system APP "Files", however if you flashed Android 9 from scratch, the standard system APP "Files" becomes hidden, which you may unhide it using this app. (I didn't test it). You can also use FileManager by Xiaomi.
Or if you're like me and prefer open-source APPs, I installed Simple File Manager Pro, it supports root (paid or free if you download it through F-Droid, but won't get advanced customizations) or this free and simple file manager.
If you wish to keep Files Go (Google Files) you can also uninstall is as a system APP and reinstall it as an user APP.
Calendar
At this point there's not much calendar APPs out there with cloud sync support, so I managed to stick to Google Calendar, although I uninstalled it as a system APP and reinstalled it as an user APP. I know I said this countless times but I'm extremely against contributing to Google's currently huge power on user personal data, so I try to be as google-less as possible.
Lens
Don't know what this actually does, but Android 8 didn't have it and I looked it up somewhere and some people said that it was safe to remove, and so far so good.
You can read more about it here.
Google
Safe to remove, however your search box widget becomes pretty useless. I actually don't mind at all, it even switches to dark theme mode.
Action Services
From what I've read, this APP is responsible for the APP suggestions on your All-APPs menu, so you'll get some errors when uninstall this. To avoid the errors you have to deactivate APP suggestions first:
Long Press Home-Screen > Home Settings > Suggestions > Apps (Disable this)
And now you're free to uninstall this.
Photos
Definitely not keeping this one, with cloud storage and such.
Replaced with, once again, Simple Gallery Pro (paid or free if you download it through F-Droid, but won't get advanced customizations). You can also use LeafPic which is also open-source and looks great but I didn't actually test it.
Google Maps
I use this, however I uninstalled as a system APP and reinstalled as an user APP.
I'm currently slowly trying to migrate to Waze even though it was bought by Google.
YouTube
I occasionally use it, so I made it an user APP.
Probably safe-to-remove but not tested
Device Health Services
Does anyone know what this APP is responsible for?
Gboard
I don't use it but I didn't uninstall it because it may be required for first-time password input when turning on the device.
When I switch to another keyboard besides Google or SwiftKey (currently using), there's a popup saying "Note: After a reboot, this app can't start until you unlock your phone.", that's why I didn't uninstall it.
Messages
Unfortunately I don't know any good enough Messaging APP to replace Google Messages.
I know there used to be Silence, it even supported P2P encryption but I think it was discontinued. There's also Textra although not open-source.
Feedback
When trying to uninstall this system APP it's shown that it is a Key module, although I really doubt it really is.

@lbsilva Device Health Services is battery optimisation.
One of the very few useful threads for this device. Bravo! Ideally, once there is a consensus on which packages can be removed without crippling the phone some knowledgeable person should make a script to do the job, either something to flash or a bash + adb to do it from desktop.
I found this .bat file, I think it's reusable with those above but only in Windows.
Wouldnt recommend removing anything to do with qualcomm or networking, be warned.
OP, when you say "remove", do you mean "disable so it can't run", or "completely wipe it off the phone"?
I've got a Blu Life One X3, rooted with TWRP and Magisk. What I describe below is my second attempt to debloat the phone. The first attempt, I just uninstalled unwanted apps from the current user via ADB.
Example:
adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.android.egg
I entered into TWRP Recovery Mode and deleted the /system/app and /system/priv-app directories for the apps I didn't want. Upon booting, the phone went through the boot animation and music jingle, then stopped. I left it overnight, since it was late and I wanted to see if it'd work its way to a full boot. It didn't, so I recovered with the out-of-box Nandroid backup I'd taken.
What's strange is that the phone worked fine when the very same apps were just disabled (during my first attempt), but locked up when those apps were deleted from the phone.
Is there something else I need to edit?
How to uninstall without using command line? Is there any some GUI application to uninstall this??
*By the way how to download youtube vanced, i search it in magisk download , there's nothing

If you are rooted, download titanium backup from playstore and have fun.
For yt Vanced, try clearing the repo cache from magisk's settings and search again. Or search the module here on XDA and add it manually.
Edit: looks like Google screwd things up and made chrome almost a dependency or it's an issue just on my device. On Oreo, Gmail stops working after chrome removal. Looks like Gmail is now dependent of chrome webview, it's crashing when using Android system webview.
Edit 2: nevermind, after updating Android system webview, Gmail app has started working again.
great thread, thanks
I found some apps/services that you've successfully disabled. Just wanna ask if, is this universal? I mean I have realme phone and planning to disable all the same apps/services which you were tried already.
So, this is a pseudo-custom rom you are after, why not use the real thing? I'm assuming this is Android 9 since 10 is a total f**k. Why not use the real thing, a custom rom? I recommend AOSiP Pizza since it's the one I've been using for a long time and it proved solid. The only thing I replaced was gallery with Simple gallery and I use MicroG for what it's worth. This removing stuff from gappsed AOSP is totally ridiculous and counter productive, you do that with Miui and such if you really care about a particular UI but not with plain Android, that's nonsense.
Found this useful tool on git last year.
It allows a lot of nice little things among which uninstall/reinstall/disable/enable system apps and services on demand without root and without passes through adb/fastboot command lines.
And it was tested with Q too.
Also feedback app was safely uninstalled.
Feel free to try it.
This is the link: https://github.com/Szaki/XiaomiADBFastbootTools
Read carefully readme.md and faq before use it.
How can I restore some critical packages under TWRP (MIUI11)? I'm testing limits of what can I delete without bricking it and reinstalling ROM every time after that is very tiresome (boot into recovery, wipe cache and data, reinstall MIUI, boot into system, remove tested apps, then restore settings and try again).
There has to be a proper way to restore some app like, for example, com.xiaomi.finddevice

Magisk + terminal debloater.
If you break it, use TWRP to fix.
Look under /data/adb/modules/terminal_debloater.

Yeah, I have debloater but I'm talking about doing it under TWRP when system isnt even loaded, debloater is a module that works in OS. In TWRP recovery your terminal is barebone core loaded by recovery itself, there is absolutely no relation to the system and apps installed, no ADB environment, no app [meta]data.

I meant to use debloater to hide the app and you can then fix it from TWRP if it doesn't work. You could always setup the files it uses from TWRP but I guess that'd be harder to do.
I don't know how adb uninstall hides but you should be able to reverse that from TWRP too (likely removing some files).
If you mount /system just move things and move them back if it fails.

How would I fix it?
Does the "debloater" make extra unnecessary copies of APK when those already exist on system partition?

No, it hides them systemlessly, using files in /data/adb/modules/terminal_debloater/system.

Based on this: https://www.xda-developers.com/uninstall-carrier-oem-bloatware-without-root-access/
I tried this:
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.android.carrierdefaultapp
and to restore:
cmd package install-existing com.android.carrierdefaultapp
What I found was that with the app installed, I had some empty directories under /data/misc/profiles/ref/com.android.carrierdefaultapp and /data/misc/profiles/cur/0/com.android.carrierdefaultapp. When I removed the app, those directories were not present.
It's just a guess... but you could possibly save the contents of /data/misc/profiles (eg. tar cf /sdcard/profiles.tar /data/misc/profiles), pm uninstall your app and if it fails to boot, untar that from TWRP? Maybe test that theory with an app you know won't hurt before you do it for real
Note that neither terminal debloater (which uses mount tricks to hide system apps) or pmuninstall will actually remove files from /system. If you actually remove files from /system then the only way to get them back is to put them back.
Hi everybody,
I dont know if this is the correct forum. And sorry for my English.
I have an Op7pro and I don't know what is happening with Google play services. I saw I have 2 account, it's like someone or something created a paralelo account. And the second account it's raining battery in second plane while the principal don't. It's not too much, but its bothering me.
Im root, twrp, renovate ice, skydragon module( not kernel), stock kernel and automate full permissions.
I don't remember install something strange.
Anyone has any idea? I attached 3 link to screenshot.
Thanks so much.

I forgot say I have paralell Instagram for works since 2 month, but I never saw Google play services duplicates for this.
You can run
Code:
su -c pm list users
in a terminal emulator to see which accounts are enabled.
To delete one of the accounts (ex. Guest) run this command, replacing ID with the number shown before the user you want to delete.
Code:
su -c pm remove-user ID

I found the "problem" and this solve another problem I had with backup in TWRP.
The problem was Instagram paralell account, this created an 999 user with another Google Play Services, and this was why backups in TWRP always finished in ERROR 255, you can´t backup with parallel account. Remove the second app don´t solve the backup´s problem, you need remove the 999 user from terminal.
Thanks again.
Hey everyone,
I'm rooted, so obviously the OTA security update fails every time for me. Since I did a hard restart on my phone, the update tries to be applied non stop, hogging up CPU usage and slowing the phone down. It says it fails and immediately tries to apply it again, in an endless loop.
I haven't found a way to disable it. Any suggestions? I tried to delete Motorola Update Services through titanium backup but it keeps coming back after a restart.
Any suggestions? I don't really want to go through the hassle of updating for a security patch, re rooting, and setting up my highly customized device again.
Thanks in advance!
Try the following
Enable usb debugging
Connect phone to PC & run the following adb command substituting package name with the package name of the app you want to disable E.g com.xyz.myapp
Code:
adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 packagename
If you get an error about this app can't be uninstalled try
Code:
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 packagename
I just wanted to update anyone in case they are looking at this thread.
The first command to remove it did not work. The second command to disable it DOES work, and survives a reboot. The package name is "com.motorola.ccc.ota"
I have Motorola Update Services frozen via Titanium seems to have killed that update pop up on 4 Motos i have. oh and disable updates in Dev mode too.
Bookmarked for later.
I'm going to bump this thread because the command is not working on Android 10. Any solutions? TB also just crashes for me.
adb simply returns "package non disable" or something along those lines. Meanwhile I keep getting that extremely annoying popup. Honestly, may it's worth switching to lineage. At least there I can be rooted and also get updates.

i second this. the second command works in my experience too.
Just an update for anyone that finds this...
On another forum, I came across this
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.motorola.ccc.ota
It worked for me on a Moto G6
Hi
It doesn't work on my device. Though I have the Moto G Power 2022 (Tonga), running A11 stock WITHOUT su (root); neither the pm uninstall or pm disable commands perform their function. Rather, it tells me the package is "non-disable" and remains installed and unable to disable. It's the motorola ota package I'm trying to freeze so it can stop with the SPAM POPUPS (no shame calling it what it is) with absolutely no option to hide or suppress them altogether. And No, going to Smart Updates and turning it off there or on Developer Options have no bearing. If anything it's become relentlessly frequent, to the point I would refer to it as spamming.
There must be something I'm missing or doing wrong. I've always been able to disable packages this way and never really encountered this problem before. Are there any other pm commands that may do the trick? Could my ADB utilities be outdated and could that be what's causing it to fail. Or have we simply reached a dead-end with software and Android 11 no longer providing a method of removing system packages WITHOUT root or unlocking bootloader.
I still have not found a way to disable this package and the popups are driving me insane!
Is there really no working method for this??
