mobile data not working - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear all...this is my 3rd post about my mobile network problem. I am not getting 3G service in my mobile. What is the possible reason behind this? I can only use 2g with slow data speed. When I choose wcdma/GSM, then one message appear "emergency calls only". Frequency is full but why this happen? In my area 3G is fully available. What to do?

APN setting is 100% accurate. Any other solution?

I have to select GSM only to get the mobile data. When I select WCDMA or WCDMA/GSM or LTE/WCDMA/GSM, then the mobile data gone and even call and message is not working at that time. No H+ sign is there. If I select GSM only, then E+ is there. REally dont understand what is the main problem.

[Q] How do I prevent Samsung Galaxy S 4G from connecting to AT&T?

I have Samsung Galaxy S 4G with T-Mobile in San Francisco.
Whenever I go to an area without T-Mobile signal, the phone connects to AT&T. I called T-Mobile and they said that's because T-Mobile has roaming agreement with AT&T so my phone would connect.
The problem is, when my phone connects to AT&T, I can't make any calls. It says the phone's not registered. T-mobile says that's because I'm in an area that has T-Mobile coverage.
You'd think that the phone would be smart enough to figure out that only emergency calls can be made (which is what BlackBerry does and shows SOS sign). The real problem for me is that, I have WiFi calling enabled with cellular preference, and when I'm in the basement of my office building where there is no T-Mobile signal (but there is WiFi signal), my phone thinks it has cellular signal so it doesn't activate WiFi calling, yet no phone calls are coming in b/c it's not registered to AT&T's cellular network.
Is there a way for me to force my phone to only connect to T-Mobile? I know there isn't on the regular settings menu, but perhaps experts could tell me how to do so using those star-sharp keys listed here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842134)?
Thank you!
Set wifi preferred instead of cellular.

Unfortunately, that doesn't work for me because I move around a lot, and Android WiFi calling feature doesn't have handover.
There's got to be a way to prevent this phone from connecting to AT&T at a low level somehow, no?
How do I do that? Have checked the manual but can't find location where explains how to select wi-fi preferred instead of cellular. Your kind advise will be appreciated
Open WiFi Calling and select settings. You'll see Preference. Select Cellular Preferred.
I think in setting then wireless and network, then mobile networks then network operators click the default settings.... select manual and wait for the carrier to pop up.
Will this solve your problem?

yep manual is exactly what OP should do.
if the settings for network operators are set to manual then u select the network u want and it sticks unless u manually select a different network provider. u are in select automatically mode so the phone can switch all on its own. this should solve your problem as other people have already mentioned
I have tried this many times and works as long you don't turn the phone off. After I forced the phone to manually select T-Mobile I checked many times the default setting and it remained in manual until the phone was turned off. When I switched it back on it was again in automatic mode and switching to ATT when signal is low.
Is there a way to prevent this? If not, well , first thing when phone is on in the morning is to check default setting.
5/24 I finally gave up and sold the phone. Samsung says they have not received any claims regarding this issue eventhough you see it frequently in the forums. I returned back to my HTC HD2 and will wait for the G2.

[Q] No 3G on Latest Miui

Hi all,
I'm new to the Nexus S 4G root scene. I just flashed Miui yesterday, and I am getting no 3G. I couldn't find anyone else that was having this issue.
Everything else works, and I get 1x data, but not 3G. It's not the location because stock gets me full 3G service in the same location.
I flashed this kernel: http://www.peteralfonso.com/2011/08/download-nexus-s-263514-kernel.html?spref=tw
but it didn't fix anything.
Thanks for your help
Edit: After going out with my phone, I realized I do in fact have 3G reception, but it's very poor and constantly switches between 3G and 1x. I normally have very good reception with stock Android in my area. It doesn't stay connected to 3G for more than a few seconds at a time and switches back and forth between 3G and 1x
Have you set up the phone to use 3G at all?
Go to Settings, and find Mobile Network settings, and there should be one box that says something like 2g only.
You probably know what to do from there on.

Under "Mobile Network Settings" there is no option for that. Only "Data Enabled" which is turned to "on"

Maybe I'm just being dumb, but it's not there.
Settings > System > Mobile Network Settings
there are 4 choices:
Data Enabled (on), Always receive MMS (on), Data roaming (off), and System Select (automatic)

How to Fix AT&T Data Throttle Your 4G - Your Data Usage is Among The Top 5% Of Users
There is a nice little APN fix. Just change the APN to Phone and force your phone to use HSPA in your phone's settings. I have instructions with a screenshot...
http://www.traemcneely.com/2011/12/...rottle-4g-data-anti-throttling-trick-for-att/
How do you perform the first step on the skyrocket?
1. Go to Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Click Network Mode and force your phone to use GSM/HSPA (Auto mode).
I don't see "network mode".
Click Access Point Name..
I am now getting 512k vs 150k.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk
Found another trick.
I named the access point the same ATT pta, then I put Phone under the APN setting.
Put your phone into GSM/HSPA (auto mode) let it connect to the network,
then go back and put it as HSPA only.....I'm getting 1-2g+ bypassing the throttle using HSPA+ works like a charm.
Att Throttle Samsung Skyrocket
i did all when i click on Mobile networks i see access point names and network operators and use packet data. When i click on network operators is says Default setup doesnt allow me to do anything. Please help
Same here. Don't see 'network.mode' selection. Please help. Does it have to be rooted?

I live in pittsburgh which is not an LTE area yet am i screwed? or is there a work around for me????????

I am still not sure where/how to pick "GSM/HSPA (Auto mode)" on stock rom. Thats not an option.
What I have are:
WCDMA preferred - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 3G is favored more.
GSM only - The GSM phone is capable of using only 2G data communication. When the 2G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
WCDMA only - The GSM phone is capable of using only 3G data communication. When the 3G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
GSM auto (PRL) - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 2G is favored more. This one is a bit confusing to me since PRL is associated mostly with CDMA technology and not GSM technology.
CDMA auto (PRL) - The CDMA phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 2G is favored more.
CDMA only - The CDMA phone is capable of using only 2G data communication. When the 2G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
EvDo only - The CDMA phone is capable of using only 3G data communication. When the 3G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) - Some phones are equipped with both GSM and CDMA capabilities. This setting appears to just have the phone attempt to stay connected to the data communication type that works the best. (Maybe the Samsung Galaxy S will take advantage of this???)
Unknown - If none of the above fit or the phone is acting weird as far as connecting to the carrier, you will see your preferred network type is set to this
(Cut n paste from another thread, dont know if these are applicable to Skyrocket/LTE)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342111
Thanks for the pointer to the thread but my whole point is that I dont see those options and for some reason my network mode changes dont stick.
So if I disable packet network, switch the APN, change the network mode and then enable the network again, I see that it has gone back to GSM?WCDMA/LTE auto mode again.
So for some reason my network mode changes dont stick. Also, I am on stock rom, could that be the reason!

Custom ROMS give you the options you are looking for.
I am confused ! If the stock radio is *locked* to use LTE if available, why are some people reporting to lock onto HSPA+ network with stock ROM. Are they exploiting some bug?
I have tried various things but I cant switch my radio to anything except GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto mode. It seems to come back to that mode.
Do I need a reboot after changing the mode.
I am using *#*4636#*#* to switch the mode.
Switching APN 's worked like a charm ;o)

[Q] Network mode cannot set to 3G

Just got my Nexus 5 today.
However, in Wireless&networks / Mobile networks / Network Mode, I can only set it as 2G or LTE but not 3G.
I am currently on b-mobile in Japan and my Nexus 4 works fine on the network.
Wondering is it some sort of bug of KitKat or is it somewhat related to the SIM card I am using...
seanyseansean said:
Probably the sim card. Mine gives me the option, but another n5 on a different network (o2/UK) doesn't.

hmm, in my case, I can see the 3G option, just that whenever I select the 3G option, the system would automatically reset it when I navigate to other page.
Is that also the case on your N5 with O2/UK sim card?
On the other hand, I will test my N5 on different sim card tomorrow.
I have the same issue. If I select 4g, the dot stays when I go back, but I only get a full bar 2g connection. If I select 3g and go back, no dot is there but I only get a 2g connection.
Sometimes this was solved in previous handsets by going into the service menu and selecting 3g/2g from there.

OK, so I tried the SIM cards from my colleges, and my N5 can connect to 3G without problem.
It's weird that my SIM card works perfectly well on N4 but NOT N5...
Did not experience such SIM card computability issue before...

I am also having the same problem, purchased the Nexus 5 from carphonewarehouse, can set on 4G or 2G, but when i set to 3G and comeback, it resets. Is that a SIM card problem? I tried to go on testing mode and apply GSM/CDMA auto PRL, that also not working. Is that a KitKat bug?
Same problem on Orange/EE in the UK. I can see the 3G option but phone won't let me change to 3G. Option never sticks. Just stays on 2G. Any ideas? Is this a known bug?
Thanks 101

Same here on T-Mobile Austria :/
Already changed SIM card, without success. Maybe provider related issues?

I'm on straight talk TT&T with a new SIM card, but sometimes the network mode doesn't stick. No idea why...
replaced a new 3G SIM, no luck
Just replaced a new 3G SIM Card didn't work the 3G option for me - Chunghwa Telecom Taiwan.
But I can select 2G, and dial number to make a phone call, so the SIM slot seem works fine, maybe just configuration issue?!
And, also I find a very annoying defect of my Nexus 5 32G(White), when hard-reset or flash to Factory Image, my Nexus 5 32G white goes crazy!! it just keep stuck and loop at Google Logo (not even show the 4 circle animation), and won't boot at all!
And I finally find a way to make it boot, by keep trying repeat flash factory, erasing userdata, erasing cache etc. is every had this issue?
EE/T-Mobile (uk) and I can't select 3g either, well I can but it doesn't stick.
I have a similar problem, except I can only select 3G / 4G, and not 2G because the 2G option isn't even displayed!! So infuriating. It still works through the *#*#4636#*#* menu, if I select GSM only then it does indeed go to 2G.
Is it possible that the SIM is somehow telling the phone OS it can't do 2G only? This didn't happen with my old carrier (same phone, only just switched). I have a feeling it's caused by the same thing that makes my phone number show up as 'unknown' now, too.
I have the same issue, I tried two different SIM, on is a Straight Talk sim that is set up to use the ATT network and used a T-Mobile sim card, both were unable to keep 3G as a setting.
My Nexus 5 seems that reluctant to drop from 3g to 2g when 4g is selected i have given up and now just manually select 2g to make sure i have a signal (im out in the sticks a bit). Sat at the PC with 4g selected i get no signal whatsoever, with 2g selected i get an indicated full signal strength.
Why on earth the N5 is so reluctant to dip its toe in the 2g territory when no data is on is beyond me.

[Q] Can I activate data connection while on call??

Hello,
With my previous handset i use to get active data connection while on call, but with One Plus One its not available.
I am using the same SIM card, and i have read somewhere that this feature is by default provided the Network operators however the handset should be compatible.
Is there are way we can activate this?

This should be enabled by default. At least it was for me. You have to be on 3G or LTE, it does not work on EDGE.
