Just got my Nexus 5 today.
However, in Wireless&networks / Mobile networks / Network Mode, I can only set it as 2G or LTE but not 3G.
I am currently on b-mobile in Japan and my Nexus 4 works fine on the network.
Wondering is it some sort of bug of KitKat or is it somewhat related to the SIM card I am using...

Probably the sim card. Mine gives me the option, but another n5 on a different network (o2/UK) doesn't.

hmm, in my case, I can see the 3G option, just that whenever I select the 3G option, the system would automatically reset it when I navigate to other page.
Is that also the case on your N5 with O2/UK sim card?
On the other hand, I will test my N5 on different sim card tomorrow.
I have the same issue. If I select 4g, the dot stays when I go back, but I only get a full bar 2g connection. If I select 3g and go back, no dot is there but I only get a 2g connection.
Sometimes this was solved in previous handsets by going into the service menu and selecting 3g/2g from there.

I also tried forcing the N5 to use 3G only (by going into the test menu with "*#*#4636#*#*" code) but it still does not work...
OK, so I tried the SIM cards from my colleges, and my N5 can connect to 3G without problem.
It's weird that my SIM card works perfectly well on N4 but NOT N5...
Did not experience such SIM card computability issue before...

Works for me now. Went into that test menu and selected GSM/CDMA auto PRL and I now have 3g. Didn't have to reboot.
3G cannot set for Virgin UK Sim

I am also having the same problem, purchased the Nexus 5 from carphonewarehouse, can set on 4G or 2G, but when i set to 3G and comeback, it resets. Is that a SIM card problem? I tried to go on testing mode and apply GSM/CDMA auto PRL, that also not working. Is that a KitKat bug?
Same problem on Orange/EE in the UK. I can see the 3G option but phone won't let me change to 3G. Option never sticks. Just stays on 2G. Any ideas? Is this a known bug?
Thanks 101

i think it's not a bug.i think it's a hardware problem. i'm having it with vodafone italy.
Same here on T-Mobile Austria :/
Already changed SIM card, without success. Maybe provider related issues?

I'm on straight talk TT&T with a new SIM card, but sometimes the network mode doesn't stick. No idea why...
replaced a new 3G SIM, no luck
Just replaced a new 3G SIM Card didn't work the 3G option for me - Chunghwa Telecom Taiwan.
But I can select 2G, and dial number to make a phone call, so the SIM slot seem works fine, maybe just configuration issue?!
And, also I find a very annoying defect of my Nexus 5 32G(White), when hard-reset or flash to Factory Image, my Nexus 5 32G white goes crazy!! it just keep stuck and loop at Google Logo (not even show the 4 circle animation), and won't boot at all!
And I finally find a way to make it boot, by keep trying repeat flash factory, erasing userdata, erasing cache etc. is every had this issue?
EE/T-Mobile (uk) and I can't select 3g either, well I can but it doesn't stick.
I have a similar problem, except I can only select 3G / 4G, and not 2G because the 2G option isn't even displayed!! So infuriating. It still works through the *#*#4636#*#* menu, if I select GSM only then it does indeed go to 2G.
Is it possible that the SIM is somehow telling the phone OS it can't do 2G only? This didn't happen with my old carrier (same phone, only just switched). I have a feeling it's caused by the same thing that makes my phone number show up as 'unknown' now, too.
I have the same issue, I tried two different SIM, on is a Straight Talk sim that is set up to use the ATT network and used a T-Mobile sim card, both were unable to keep 3G as a setting.
My Nexus 5 seems that reluctant to drop from 3g to 2g when 4g is selected i have given up and now just manually select 2g to make sure i have a signal (im out in the sticks a bit). Sat at the PC with 4g selected i get no signal whatsoever, with 2g selected i get an indicated full signal strength.
Why on earth the N5 is so reluctant to dip its toe in the 2g territory when no data is on is beyond me.

Hi,
I am unable to use 3G on htc desire. I have set the correct APN. The problem is that when I choose "WCDMA" as the network mode, it automatically switches back to "GSM only". The place where I live has no problem with 3G availability. I feel the problem lies more with my handset. Can someone please help ? Is there anything that I can do to get rid of this problem. My phone has lost its warranty since I unlocked it.
Have you tried any other operator sim card? It's a good troubleshooting to do when this kind of problems happen...
Had problems like that before and it was an incorrect APN setup.
Thanks for getting back. I tried with a different sim and a different operator. They were also not successful. APN setting is perfectly right for the current sim. The APN settings were given by the operator.

Are you using any kind of widget to switch APN on / off, 2G/3g ?... I noticed that for example, Widgetsoid can mess with 3g connection so much that sometimes you need to remove it and reboot the phone so you can get things working again.
Try using another SIM card too. It may give you a clue on what's going on: wrong settings / card with no data activated / etc ...
I am not using any widget to turn on/off the 3g. EDGE services work on my mobile while 3G is not working. If I use the sim card on to a different mobile, 3G works fine without any problem. Tried using another sim card with 3G data activated and that also did not work fine for me on HTC Desire.
some time ago i set the phone to LTE in the testing menu to see what LTE networks it could see. it saw them fine but not for the network i use yet.
the thing is ever since then everytime the phone reboots it seems to default back to LTE only. soi have to ga back in to the test menue and set it back to LTE/ GSM to get the signal back.
Help! why is it still doing this and how can i fix it?
Go to Settings, More... under Data usage, Mobile networks, Preferred network type. Make sure the radio button for 3G is selected.
so i cant leave it on 4g preferred? 4g should be coming to my location in the next coulpe weeks so id not want that to be perminant.
or will setting it to 3g reset things?
ooooooh, did as you said rebooted, 3g locked on. sat back to 4g preferred and rebooted, 3g locked on.
yey! thanks, i dont get why it worked but much appreciated.
Hello all.
I bought a Galaxy Core from the Middle East(2 Sim cards) and tried to use it in America through Strait Talk. The phone is working fine and the only problem I have that I can not get 3G just E (EDGE) which is so slow. I put my Sim Card in a Galaxy S III to make sure that the Carrier provides 3G. As soon as I put the Sim Card in Galaxy S III, I immediately got H +. But when I put it back in my Galaxy Core I got E.
My area covers 3G
APN setting is according to Straight Talk instructions
Any idea why ?
I would highly appreciate your answer and help!!
Check network mode - maybe it is set to use only 2G. You can find it under Settings -> More settings -> Mobile Data

Mode is already set to GSM/WCDMA (Auto Mode). I can use this option and GSM Only option. I can not use WCDMA Only option. If I chose WCDMA Only, I will loose the the whole mobile service. Thanks a lot for your help and time.

Look You can't use 3G on both SIM at the same time. So choose WCDMA only on the SIM you want to use 3G and use WCDMA/GSM on other SIM and this might not be allowing you to choose "WCDMA only" so better check 2nd SIM connection type.
and yup it is common that network disconnects while change the mode of connection. It will be stable after your option is set.

In fact I am using only one Sim Card. I chose WCDMA Only and restarted the phone. I lost the service again. Thank you Bro.
I too have an issue with my Samsung Galaxy Core prime sm-g360t, my 3g is not working n I've tried LTE/Wcdma/gsm, buh it's still not working
actually ..our galaxy core now became as trash ...even i faced the same problem but there was no fix except an workaround ...the thing is lots of companies has put many features in their "new" SIMs and galaxy core is unable to process those(hardware problem) but if you use an old sim like 2-3 yrs old it will work for you ...after many many googling i had nothing in my hands but solved it by using my old sim ....just take someone's which is old and see if it helps ....
----by an same problem facer
I really need help with my device, I searched all over XDA and no-one seems to have the same issue as me.
Here is some information:
1) Nexus 6P (H1511)
2) 6.0.1 Absolute stock, no rom, no root, no custom recovery. Build number MMB29P.
Recently got a new Nexus 6P and imported to Russia. All of the major bands here are supported. And the phone worked excellent for a few weeks, but then it lost all 3G or GSM connectivity. Just randomly, didn't do anything with it, the only thing I did is move to another city but than I got back, the issue didn't resolve. LTE works perfectly but can't call or receive calls, can receive sms though. Reseting network settings and factory reset changed nothing. Tried manualy set network to WCDMA or GSM with *#*#4636#*#* command, the moment I switch to anything besides LTE the connection is lost. Contacted the provider, no problem on their side, my SIM works good in other phones, my phone with other SIMs - no.
I don't think it is a hardware issue because a few times I managed to get everything working after an hour of switching networks and bands with no particular order in the *#*#4636#*#* testing mode.
After a while I figured that if I set phone to "GSM only" on USA bands in testing mode, but at the same time set it to "LTE prefered" in the normal network settings menu. I am able to set phone to Band mode 7 and set the network back to 2G in network settings keeping it on " GSM only" the whole time and only after this compicated algorithm and after a reboot 2G and 3G starts working. But any reboot after that revertes everything back to only LTE stage. Also if I get everything working but than reset network settings everything stops working again.
I have no idea what caused such an issue, I really hope someone can help.
Sorry couldn't post screenshots because of the "10 posts rule".
Hello!
I just bought my OnePlus 6 2 days ago. I've switched from a Xiaomi phone. One problem I am facing with this phone is I cannot individually select the preferred network type or each of my sims.
My Sim-1 (the data sim) is running on 4G-LTE network and Sim-2 is running on 3G-UMTS. I'd like my Sim-2 to run on 2G-GSM ONLY network as it saves battery and GSM signal strength for this particular sim is better in my area. However, neither the Sim & network menu, nor the *#*#4636#*#* code menu lets me select the preferred network type for Sim-2.
The code menu on my Xiaomi allowed me to set them individually. Is there any way the same can be done on OnePlus 6?
Thanks in advance.
Just switch "Mobile data" to SIM-2 and change the preferred network type to 2G and then change "Mobile data" back to SIM-1, this will keep SIM2 in 2G mode

I saw this last week, changed it on my phone as well, and it worked great!
However, after updating to 5.1.6, I noticed it changed them back. And dual 4g option was disabled by default.
When I keep sim1 on 4g/3g/2g, I switch to sim2, change it to 2g only. Then switch back to sim1 it changed to 3g/2g. I leave it like that, and switch back to sim2, and it also is set to 3g/2g. I have the dual 4g option disabled.
When I enabled the Dual 4G option, I was able to make sim1 4g/3g/2g preferred, change sim2 to 2g. Switch back to sim1 and it stayed with the 4g, switched to sim2 and it was still on 2g.

Thank you so much!
I was almost losing my mind again after the 5.1.6 update as battery consumption had increased because settings got changed automatically. On top of that, the prior method wasn't working. But the method you mentioned for 5.1.6 is working fine now. You just saved my night's sleep!
Thanks again
5.1.9 seems to have broken this. Whatever I have sim1 on, sim2 follows. Anytime find a work around to have 1 sim with 4g/3g/2g and the other 2g only?
How can I do that in OnePlus 5?
Back to the same problem in 5.1.11
UPDATE: I think I've found a workaround. Manually select network operator for the second sim and select the 2G version of the network. Seems to be working for me. Try it and let me know if it works for you.
UPDATE 2: Nevermind. It reverted back to whatever setting I had for sim 1. This is so annoying!
