Ambient Display feature not working - Moto G 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So by default phone is set to Moto display, tried switching to Ambient Display but it does nothing, and reacts the same way as the third option which does not wake screen at all. Just wondering if anybody have similar issue or maybe I'm doing something wrong

Yep. Same thing. I wanted to see the difference, but nothing happens with Ambient Display. I even watched several YouTube videos thinking I was looking for something that it doesn't do, but it doesn't do anything. Tested it with app notifications, texts, reminders, etc. The screen stays off 100%. I wonder how you get it working.....

I got it to work. I did some Googling, and it seems to be triggered by the "press power button to end calls.". I don't know why, but toggling that makes it work for me. You also need at least "swipe" enable for a lock screen. No lock screen means no Ambient Display. The option to toggle the power button is under settings -> accessibility. I have mine set to off, so I just toggled it on, and then back off, turned the screen off, called the phone from another phone, and after the miss call, Ambient Display worked, so I hope it works for all notifications. Haven't had any yet, but if things change I'll post back.

I'll definitely give this a go :good:

I like it better than Moto Display. Here is what I see that is different. Ambient Display doesn't wake when the phone moves, and it doesn't wake by the sensor. What happens is when you get a text, missed call, notification, etc the screen will show the time, and the notifications twice. Meaning if you get a text the Ambient Display comes on two seconds later, and then again five seconds after that. That's it. Moto Display will show you the same info only if you move the phone. It's a toss up, and really depends on what you like. I like Ambient Display since I hate that Moto Display always shows by the slightest move of the phone. Bump the table it comes on. I'd rather have the notice right when I get it, and glance at the screen to see what it is without waking the phone than having to move it to see.

I'm very sorry for posting a sort of off topic post, but nowhere can I find a definitive answer until I read your post (though there are a lot of forums to go through still... It's daunting).
So, moto display as a default the screen comes on by default when you move the phone, regardless of whether you have a notification or not? I wanted my next phone to have double tap to wake so I could avoid the power button most of the time. This appears to accomplish the same end goal.
In comparison, ambient display appears to be more to what the description of moto display leads... It comes on when you have a notification (only). This would lead to pressing the power button often, no?

Correct. With Moto Display you don't really need the power button at all. Just move the phone, and the display comes one to show the time, or time and notifications if there are any. If you touch the screen you can simply unlock the screen, or go into a notification. With Ambient Display if you don't catch the screen coming on when you get a notification you need to press the power button since moving the phone won't light up the screen like Moto Display does.

Is not working!!!
Nothing happens when I enable the ambient display, turn off the screen and move the phone. And it SAYS "wake when you MOVE the phone"!

I just wiped my phone again, and the first setting I set was the ambient display. Now is working! But it sure have bugs to not work before...
BTW: I just figure out that my Moto g 3 (XT1543) is 1 GB RAM only, not 2, like I saw specs on google... I'm really frustrated =(

Hi, if you Cm13 .. then to make Ambient display working .. you must not have any 3rd party LOCKSCREEN except the default..
i mean no other things like Slidejoy, lockscreens ..etc
if they are present, then ambient display will not work !!
try if your ambient display is working by going into Guestmode with ambient ON , then you will get idea

Gear 2 Setup

Screenshot of my setup, that I find gives a good setup and also benefits by keeping the screen wake up off, but the Keep Screen Off option unchecked, meaning when you get a notification the screen comes on and then times out.
Think most including me just ticked every box and didn’t really read what each does (or was that just me) ?
Checking the box means you have to constantly press the button to wake the watch.
Oops forgot to post the image
I like to keep the screen off, but have the gesture detection on so
this is because when i am busy or in a dark room getting the watch light up is very distracting,
finally no notification is more important that whats happening in real life (for me at least)

Alternative for Always On Display

I know that Always On Display saves battery for people who frequently turn on their phone to see the time/notifications.
But, it kill more battery for people who dont turn on their phone display often.
So, is there a way to alter this feature so that the 'Always on Display' turns on only on screen tap/double tap.
What i want is,
the screen should be off,
when i tap/double tap the screen - Always on display must show the time/notifications for few seconds
when i click the home/power button, the normal lock-screen must be displayed
IS THERE A WAY TO DO THAT?
Nope. Its either on or off.
Theres one thing that u can do but it still be on just in a bit different way. Turn off the always on display then set night clock. In my case i do 00:00 ~ 23:59. Still looking a way how to put clock as edge feed
Always On should definitively have a TIMER; it's absurd to work during the night and I don't need the night clock either (the only one that can currently stop the Always On).....

You can put the phone on its face. That will turn it off, just make sure you put a cloth under it so that you dont scratch the screen.
In my testing i found that AOD takes 3-4% in 9hrs overnight, thats less than 0.5%/hr. Very solid if you ask me

I prefer to be done automatically, I really think that it is something easily achievable by Samsung.
And is is not only about battery consumption but also about screen burn-in, despite all the watch movement.....
I'm using acDisplay from the play store. It allows you to cover the proximity sensor and then let go. Also kicks on when you pick it up.

Use AC Display apk, I think that's what you need

[APP][Android 6+] Ambi-Turner - wake up ambient display

I've created an app that wakes ambient display when you take the phone out of your pocket or if you have the phone face down and turn it over. The app is in addition to Google's ambient display and does not change your lock screen in anyway. It can also set "pulses" of ambient display. The free version allows you to have it always pulse while charging.
I added a few other paid features for tilt or lift to unlock, wave to unlock, pulsing at an interval, and battery percentage display on the ambient display.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions or run into any problems. Thank you!
Check it out: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.compass.ambiturner
Pulse means, as long as i have for exampel a unread whatsapp message, ambi is showing at the set pulse time?
Maybe ill test it on OP3 with CM14.1 running ... will report back!

Correct. There is a filter for you to choose which apps can trigger a pulse. The pulse timeout is how long do you want the pulses to continue before it stops (to save battery). Pulse will temporarily pause when your phone goes into deep sleep. I could wake it up, but that's a much larger battery hit.
The other features seems to have little to now battery impact. Pulse is fine as long as the interval isn't set crazy low.
So far I've only personally tested it on stock Pixel XL.
ok, so far its working fine here!
Just the pulse isnt working (tried whatsapp and google messenger)
Love the idea off showing the battery, but its not that looking good :silly:
but i think, you just can manage this as "notification", or am i wrong?
anyways, good idea so far, will follow (bought it anyway)

The battery level is a notification. I'll create a custom layout to improve the look in a future update.
The pulse is the least reliable feature. I'm still working out the kinks, but doze and deep sleep definitely are one problem. I'm testing various ways and will try to get it as consistent as possible.
Alarm Manager would work but it would drain battery.
Looks great! Just to confirm - you need to have a lock screen set up for it to work?

Yes, it works with androids Ambient Display. So if you have that and it's turned on it should work.
So I've done some limited testing with the app white listed from doze and so far it improves the responsiveness significantly. I don't know the battery impacts yet, but if it's not noticeable I'll add code to prompt users to white list it.
Other upcoming changes:
Advanced settings to adjust wait times for how long the phone has to be in your pocket or laying flat before a wake can occur.
A pulse option that initially pulses faster when a notification comes in, and progressively shows down until the timeout.
Possibly change in lock screen battery indicator appearance.
Filter on laying flat thresholds. I suspect the accelerometer incorrectly reports the phone tilted while it is laying flat on occasion.
New update posted.
I may have discovered what is causing the intermittent nature of wave to wake. I made some changes in how I'm using the proximity sensor so that should help. I'll have to wait and see after a day or so of use to see how consistent it is.
I also added an option to turn off the wake from pocket.
There's now a help screen with an email developer button and some troubleshooting hints. I've been getting a large number of 1 star reviews, and many of them are people who don't realize you need to have ambient display turned on and a lock screen set, so I included more info on that.
Oh, and the notification is now hidden unless you have the Battery Indicator selected!
If anyone is still having problems with tilt to wake please let me know. On my Pixel XL that has been working every time all day. There is sometimes a delay, but I think that's due to the aggressiveness of Android 7.1 putting the device into sleep.
Awesome app. I bought it mainly because of Wave To Wake, but for some reason it works two times on my Nexus 6 and then stops working until I turn my screen on and off again. Oh, and I've already whitelisted Ambi-Turner from the battery optimisation.
Also I would love if you could make Ambient Display work as soon as I turn the screen off, without having to wait for 10 or 3 seconds.
Thank you a lot for your hard work, I hope this can be fixed. Please contact me if I can help with anything!

I'm trying to get wave to wake as consistent as possible. Did you update last night? Let me know if that helps it.
I'm actually working on some advanced settings to let you control those timeouts.

I'm testing it right now and it's still quite inconsistent. Though I never know if I'm waving too fast or too slow, you know? Maybe if there was a way to make it more sensitive? Thanks for the attention! ;D
Edit: just to be clear, Wave To Wake does only work two times, but I discovered that I don't actually need to turn the screen on for it to work, I can just move the device (then Ambient Display will turn on) and after that the Wave To Wake will work again (though still only two times). I believe it has something to do with the time after it's been awake or something like that.
Android Wear Issue
Ok...I love the app when its working and even bought the Pro. So worth it to me.
This morning I forgot my Android Wear watch (LG Urbane) at home and Ambi Turner was working perfectly. I had to run home at lunch, grabbed my watch, turned it on and now Ambi Turner isn't working.
Any thoughts how to get around this?

I'm adding some customization for the wave timeouts. I wish I could measure hand distance from phone but the pixel and nexus sensors don't have that granularity the way moto phones do.

Hmm that's strange. I'm using a garmin fitness watch that has notifications and haven't seen anything like that. Does your watch somehow mute notifications on your phone so that only the watch displays them?

Yes...there is a setting in Android Watch (Silence phone while wearing watch ) in the new version. It used to be 'Mute calls and notifications'. Its actually very handy so that when I'm in a meeting, I just get a vibration on my watch instead of my phone making any noise. Add the 'Feel the Wear' app where you can customize the vibration pattern per app...just a great combo.
EDIT: Since I just got a new version of Android Watch, it seems I can turn on the Silence option and the AmbiTurner, wake on wave, is working! Woo HOO!
Made tons of improvements. Tilt to wake should be extremely reliable now. There is also a lift to wake option. I reduced the speed you need to wave, so it should be much easier to trigger now. I also added an option to always pulse while charging.
Let me know how it works!
I had taken a break from updating it because I became a father but I have a little spare time now.

I think he means the feature is broken. It's not working for a bunch of us after the day-one update. It works when it wants to. OnePlus has done nothing to fix this and I'm just about ready to get my money back. Just because it's working fine for you doesn't mean we're doing something wrong.
Yeah, lock screen gestures and single/double tap don't work on the latest update, but I believe they're working on fixing it, going through repro steps right now according to their bug page. I'm sure it'll get fixed soon, and it's not a make or break issue to me by any means.
What version are you guys on?
I'm on oxygen 9.5.5 T-mobile gm1915 not having any issues.
I came here to find this out. It's works randomly.
I don't know what I did, but it is working now. I have rebooted twice and it has persisted so +1 on the issue being random. I more wanted to know if others were experiencing the same behavior. Thanks for the replies!
Having tested this, It works randomly during low light situations, and all the time in normal/extreme light situations, such as outside in the sun or in a bright room.

Yup. This is my issue.
So my double tap to wake completely stopped working. Single tap doesn't work at all either. Not happy at all right now. Completely stopped about a half hour ago. Reboots fix nothing.
Got my phone yesterday and rooted 10 min after opening it and took update to 9.5.3. no issues at work double or single tap to wake. Used it all night setting it up and playing with it. Lit room or dark. It's been pretty consistent so far. There is an occasional time I have to tap a second time but still work on the 2nd try.
Not sure why it's random like that. Only thing I can think of is after the update... Did any of you do a factory reset? Maybe some reminant install files are causing some issues

In developer options you have to turn on oem unlocking and USB defining. Have ADB and fastboot SDK installed on PC. Then while in the bootloader type... Fastboot oem unlock.
To root you need Magisk. Follow this thread

The people here saying that it has to do with light are right. I have tested this myself. Even in fairly lit rooms, if the light isn't shining directly on the ambient light sensor, Ambient Display, double-tap-to-wake, and lift-to-wake are all completely disabled. If you shine a flashlight on the light sensor, they suddenly become available. This means that if you aren't using the phone in broad daylight or VERY well lit rooms, you have to hit the power button. Aside from the inconsistency of functionality that creates, I haven't used a power button to wake my phone in 3 years. I certainly hope they plan to fix this soon, as I'm of a mind to return the phone right now. This makes it very annoying to use on a daily basis for me. I keep my house fairly dark at night when I'm watching TV.
For some reason, OnePlus has it using the ambient light sensor rather than the proximity sensor and/or gyroscope for these features. This is not how it should work.

But it seems it's different from device to device ? Double tap to wake, the lift feature and the only one tap to activate ambient light works in all light conditions for me.
Just a thought....is there an option to avoid accidental touches when in a pocket? This might explain why it works in well lit rooms and not in dark rooms.

Yes! That reproduces the issue exactly for me. I am sure this is not the only one, but this thread on OnePlus support forums reports the issue.

You can see users reporting the problems inconsistency, and OnePlus seems to acknowledge the problem and they are "looking into it". Please go add your feedback as I am sure the more people that complain, the higher priority the bug will become.

This is where the inconsistency of the issue occurs... I am in my office which is lit the same way each day since I got the device (low light). The off screen gestures magically started working about 6 hours after I got the phone and were working up until this morning. Put the device close to a light source while the screen is dark, and you will see it wake up with no interaction with the screen. Screen off gestures work while in that lighting. I forced closed, cleared storage/cache of the Ambient display service and my phone now works in all lighting. It is almost as if the sensor becomes stuck in 'pocket mode' or something like that.
I noticed some funny:
Which cases are you using?
I was with the one in the box until now and everything worked fine (ambient display, double tap to wake, one tap to show fingerprint, wake when lifting up the phone,...). I'm with the Nylon case since a few minutes and since then the ambient display won't work anymore.
Maybe there's something related?

Yes, you're totally right! I tested it! When light is shining on the display, my tap gestures will work again. I forced closed and cleared storage of ambient display but unfortunately it doesn't change my current situation, at the moment it won't work... ?
I can confirm this as well. In dark or even dim rooms, I must use the power button to turn the screen on, in well lit environments, I can use tap to wake. Hopefully this can be fixed in an upcoming update.

screen comes on perodically

Hi
The screen on my phone comes on periodically showing the time. Is that meant to happen?
It happens for no reason that I can ascertain, but also it happens when I move the phone.
My G7 Power does this too

It is a feature typically called "always on display" on other phones. Moto calls it "Moto display/peek display". Yes it's supposed to happen. On Moto phones with LCD displays such as this one.....it's activated by a sensor. When it's in your pocket it'll be fully off or if you lay the phone face down even. I used to turn it off to save battery but it actually works fairly well and turns on when needed. It'll show you other notifications too.
