Happy with your Note 5? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note5

I currently have the Verizon Note Edge and I really don't like the performance. I would classify it as the second worst phone that I've owned. Behind only to the infamous Sprint Nexus 4. At any rate, I am contemplating moving from Verizon back to Sprint so I can: #1 get away from my Edge that I still owe $500 on, and #2 return to the rooting scene which I sorely miss, and #3 to save around $85/month. I would like to know if you users of the new Note 5 are happy? I have owned all the Note series' up until now, so I would like to stick with them (just never the Note Edge again) LOL... If you have rooted or unlocked your N5, is it so-far so-good?
Thanks!

I've been pretty happy with it so far. A few bugs here and there I'm ironing out but I'm liking it.

Im very unhappy with sprint and this note 5. Wth, i cant talk and surf the net at the same time! So much for multitasking. Ok so what if i can use wifi and call....if you're not at home or nowhere near wifi then your s.o.l! If im using gps and a call comes in, guess what...you loose data connection which in turns loose navigation. How can someone truly multitask if on a phone call and you need to look up something....hey jim, let me call you right back, i cant talk and search the web at the same time, but im cool because I have a note 5...wtf. oh well

Can I modify this question specifically to those who had the Note 4?
My Note 4 failed last week, Sprint TEP is replacing it with a Note 5. I grabbed a Note 4 at Best Buy for $1 and am going to choose one and sell the other.
Right now I am weighing the benefit of removable SD card and Battery (which I love about the N4) vs 33% more RAM and incremental upgrades on everything in the N5 (Camera, processor, software, etc).
Has anyone upgraded and wish they haven't? Or did the N5 make you forget your N4?

I upgraded to Note 5 last week from a Note 4. Honestly, the no SD card and no removable battery ( I have 7 batteries ), was a big deal for me. But I have been really happy with the Note 5. I get about 10- 12 hours on my battery, 3 hours screen time. I have learned to use Google Photos now, so don't store too many pictures on my phone now. The camera is awesome. No lag whatsoever. I use Nova Launcher with a custom Icon pack.
I have always rooted my phones, and this will be the first phone I do not feel the need to root. One week in and I have been very happy.
So happy, that last night I listed my Note 4 on Swappa and sold it this morning.
Hope that helps!

Note 5 kicks ass... Not prefect but a great phone so far and I've had it since launch

trading my sprint gs4 for N5 couple quick questions

does the original owner need to un-register it with google so he wont have the power to lock my device?
the n5 is the black 16GB model and hes throwing in $75 do you think that's a good deal?
im used to all my Samsung stuff on the S4 (I do like TW) but I like the hardware inside the N5
anyhow I have about 1hr so the 1st question is most important and the last I guess is subjective but I feel like this is best place to ask it
thanks
As long as the phone is not blacklisted it should be good to go after you factory reset it. Which I assume you would do.
Secondly if you actually like touchwiz you may miss some features that it offers so you should probably play with a nexus 5 before you buy one. Nexus 5 is what is known as a vanilla android experience. Meaning all the bloat and crap that slows the device down is gone. Fwiw I had an S3 before my Nexus 5 and I'm very happy with it, but no matter what anyone tells you cell phones are always going to be personal preference when it comes to what you like.

First question answered above but If you love TW i think you will be dissapointed with Vanilla AOSP stock as it has mainly the bare essentials build in. A custom rom or stock with Xposed and Gravitybox will liven it up though and adds more fuctionality. Many TW features however are not available.

i think maybe the trade for the n5 along with the $75 helps out.
i really think in the end i want a note 3 but maybe this will get me close as far as selling it out right and adding money and in mean time maybe give me a new device to play with
how can i tell if its black listed?
yea i like the TW ui. usually i root and debloat or just get a cust rom that is debloated already.
how can there be no sd card slot?
lol

Google hates external sdcards, just insert your microsimcard in the N5 and if data and telephony works its probably not blacklisted. Maybe you can run a imei check here http://www.imei.info/ or call your phone company for a check.
id he bought it from radio shack and I think his carrier is sprint
he was gonna by ms gs4 originally but instead he bought the n5 new
now he wants to trade and will add $75 cash so I wonder if its under contract or how that works
is it an unlocked phone really when you buy it from radio-shack for sprint (they do sell sprint there)

ok thanks all
im heading out for a trade
see you all on this forum soon
I have the N5 and I just got my wife a slightly used S4 (Sprint) and I have to say that I like the S4 a lot. Do I like it better than my N5? No, I prefer the N5 but only slightly, the S4 is really a nice phone and feels great in your hands as well.
When I was setting up the S4 for her I found myself contemplating keeping that for me and giving her my N5 but that thought quickly left my mind. Waiting on what the S5 will bring before I even think about moving from my N5.
If the N5 is going to be used on Sprint call them up to make sure you can activate it on Sprint, give them the number inside the battery compartment and they will check for you.
just got back with the n5
the s4 i was trading him had the wrong prl (forgot to flash that back to sprint before i left) so i looked like a dipshiat in radio-shack on the phone with customer service (they are saying looks all good) and we are looking at the radio signal going ...where is it
lol
his wife had an s4 on sprint so i looked at her prl and looked at mine and new right away i messed up.
anyhow i ran home flashed the correct prl and boom the phone is working as it should and we did wind up trading phones and getting the $75 in cash
now im home and charging the n5 and am about ready to do some research on different roms
i did like samsung touchwiz ui so is there anything kind of similar?
i have this n5 listed on craigslist as i do really want a note 3 in the end and to my understanding the one to get is a sprint note 3 but thats another subject
gonna try the 2 roms listed above
this is gonna be weird. nothing to unlock i can just flash any 4.4 rom?

In the meantime you can type in "Touchwiz Launcher" in the Play Store and you'll see a variety of Touchwiz replicas.
The Nexus 5 honestly isn't for everyone. I love it but you may not since you said you love Touchwiz. Touchwiz comes with tons of features out of the box but to me most of them are gimmicks that are cool to show off to friends. I had the Note 3. It was cool but I was missing Vanilla Android so I got the N5.

you explained that perfectly but i do like tech specs like this hardware and i do like to game
i was thinking about trying that with the n5 connected to my 52" lcd samsung dumb-tv.
i like that side too of the actual hardware and messing with drivers for xbox/ps3 controllers etc..
but you can strip / debloat the stock rom of touchwiz if you root or even get a tw custom rom so it not too bad.
as far as the extra feature gimmics 100% correct
even the ir blaster does work good but as far an actual remote control its way off. the app that they use for the menu of whats coming on next are pics of the shows in time slots and i do like that feature. its better then my mediacom tv-guide
i think i will have fun with this n5 while i have it and most likely get the note 3 mostly because of the bigger screen as my eyes really like it
debloat the hell out of that rom and prob try and sim-unlock which sucks because it dont work like it should (like it does with the N5)
omg this thing has a ton of RADIOS!!
what networks will it not work with (the guy i got it from said it wont work with verizon)
that could save the day in the end and i might keep it just for that

From what I've read it will work on Verizon but it depends on what location you are in. I'd call it a bust and just say it doesn't work since it doesn't function 100% like a Verizon phone.
Let's face it, most of us love the Nexus 5 for the speed, development and timely updates directly from Google. IDC what manufacturer makes the Nexus 5 I will always buy one. I'm not gonna lie, the Note 3 was a cool phone even with its gimmicky features.
Whenever I try to out do my dad (he has a Note 3) its a bit hard because he doesn't understand the behind the scenes features the Nexus 5 has and his favorite thing is, "but can your phone switch channels". Lol.

The Nexus 5 fully supports all of the major US carriers except for Verizon. Verizon has always been left in the dust when it came to Nexus phones and I think its actually Verizon fault because of how strict they are. If Verizon officially had the Nexus 5 they would probably require the Nexus 5 to have their bloatware and software upgrades would have to go through them first and they'll test it for a month or 2 and then release it.

Upgrade from N4 to N5?

I have had a Nexus 4 since the end of August.
I've been given the opportunity to upgrade to a new Nexus 5. Should I go for it, or should I wait instead and get the Nexus 6 (or whatever it will be called) in October when its released?
Anyone who did make the jump from the N4, your opinions will be greatly appreciated. I can't see any groundbreaking improvements...?
So far I'm leaning on sticking with the N4 for now, its not even a year old yet and does pretty much all I want to do on it. I'm a casual user, no root, stock KitKat etc.
Cheers.

In all honesty I don't think it is worth it, yeah; 1080p, better camera, processor, and speaker is moved but really..... eh as far as I am concerned.. If I remember correctly you can get LTE on the Nexus 4 (I never did though). I upgraded just because I wanted the latest nexus device.
I also got my N4 in August. I only had it until the week the N5 came out. It was just too tempting! I don't think the N5 is a massive upgrade but my N4 used to shut itself down overnight sometimes. The N5 has been totally reliable and feels much more robust. Its the first Android phone that I've kept close to stock. Franco kernel is well worth looking at.

lte works great on the nexus 4. sure, it officially doesnt have it. but its easy enough to enable.
anyways, in speed and performance, the nexus 5 blows away the nexus 4.
Upgraded from the N4 to N5 since November and never looked back!
If you can wait for the Motorola-Lenovo Nexus then wait for it or if you can't buy it now then sell it later then use that $ pickup the new motoleno nexus
I also came from the n4 and mainly upgraded to the n5 because of the bigger screen, camera, and sd800. The camera itself was enough for me to buy it since the n4 had this horrible over exposure preview problem when taking pictures. Which made it extremely difficult to tell if it was a good picture or not until I went into the gallery to check it.
Either way, I have no regrets
No regrets, had the N4 for about 4 months before moving to the N5. N4 was my first foray back into Android phone since the LG Eve (which Rogers/LG abandoned pretty much, had to beg to get 1.6 when everyone else was getting 2.2). N5 to me feels much more refined than the N4, in terms of just the feel of the phone itself (thinner, sleeker, barely taller but the screen difference was noticeable). That said, it's much more like an evolutionary vs revolutionary device when compared with the N4.
I would say no. I would personally only upgrade ever 2 cycle. Went from an Samsung Galaxy S2X to a nexus 5 and it wasn't that big of a jump, but the price was right.
Snapdragon 800 ia a beast
had N4 from march, changed to another one in August..and in November moved to N5. wouldnt go back in a lifetime!
go for n5
The Nexus 4 isn't that bad although the only thing I miss/don't miss is the glass back. It made the phone stand out but I was so scared of damaging it.
What I really do love about the Nexus 5 is that we now have the option for a 32gb (which I now have unopposed to a 16gb Nexus 4). The screen is also a lot better, camera is a million times better and the speaker has definitely improved over the Nexus 4. I remember being embarrassed when showing a friend or a family member a YouTube video and them asking me to turn my volume up and I'm like "its all the way up".

I don't usually change phones very often frequently, so if I did get the N5 I wouldn't be expecting to get an N6 straight after in a few months.
So its really just one or the other.

I've read various reports (rumors?). Are you referring to the one about Google stopping the Nexus line and offering a "Google Experience" phone?
I'm not too sure , I've read on phonearena.com saying during the MWC, a google representative stated there will be no new nexus device before Q4 of this year.

So i had the Nexus 4, changed to Galaxy S4 and i am now on my Nexus 5.
Speed is a reason! You don't see that in speedtests but Nexus 4 and S4 had some laggy feeling that the Nexus 5 doesn't have. I played last week with the nexus 4 of a friend last week an i felt like i went back to stoneage... But afterall its everything a matter of perception.
The second reason to change is the camera! I hated the really bad camera of the nexus 4, i liked the camera of the Galaxy S4 and i love the camera of the Nexus 5. Yes the galaxy s4 has a better camera on high light conditions, but i make 90% of my pictures in parties/night under low light conditions and there the camera of the Nexus 5 is brilliant!
The third reason is Nexus wireless charger with it's magnets and the vertical charging! Really nice although a bit expensive gimmick.Really good to use in your car.
After all everything goes down to the money. I was able to make the change without paying anything, but i would definitely make the change even if i had to pay!

Should I wait?

I'm die for an upgrade and my note 2 recently decided to become a paper weight. So in back on my s3.
So, is the s6 worth waiting for to look at or should I just get the note 4? I like the size of the note obviously but I see it can't be rooted yet (or ever). The s6 seems nice but I don't like the non removable battery and no sd slot.
So what's your guys opinion? (I'm on Verizon if that makes any difference)

Yeah, that makes a metric sh!tton of difference. Verizon is notorious for being unfriendly towards developers/hacking, particularly with Samsung phones. Locked bootloaders, impossible root, etc. They're pulling this crap on the S5 and Note 4, so you can be damned well assured their S6 will forever remain a locked, bloatware ridden, obnoxious hunkajunk that needs to update NFL Mobile very other goddamed frigging day. The Note 4 won't be any different.
If you want freedom, go with T-Mobile. Unlocked bootloaders (mostly, not always) and/or rootable, and always the option of carrier unlocked phones. AT&T has better coverage though, and unlocked GSM phones will work on their networks too, but their plans aren't as good as T-Mobile's. Depends on what you need: better coverage or better value.
I used to flash a new Rom at least once a week and try put everything on my droid x and s3. Once I got my note 2 I slowed down a lot since the performance was pretty good. I just found a Rom that worked and stuck with it for the most part.
Unfortunately the only other carrier that gets halfway decent service where I'm at 99% of the time is at&t. So its between those 2. And I already have 3 lines on Verizon so I might as well stick with them.
The the note 4 root bounty is up over $16,000 which is crazy so I think eventually we'll see root for it, at least i hope.
I am still torn between the two phones though.
Lets just assume both will stay locked and not rooted, which do you feel would be the better choice
Well ill be getting a note 4 tomorrow. Best but has it for $199 so that basically set the deal for me.
I played around with my fathers note 3 and forgot how much I liked the big screen of the note.
And the above post made me realize that the chances of the s6 being unlockable and rootable are slim to none I might as well just get the note.
I considered the nexus 6, but the non removable battery and no sd card is a deal breaker. Plus I honestly never really could like pure vanilla android for more than a few days. Call me crazy but I actually like touchwiz.
I'm posting from my note 4. It's very nice and will definitely work for what I wanted.
They had a s6 there and I handled both. I just felt that I would regret not getting the bigger screen.
Now to just hope for root for ad block. But for now the work around for no root ad block will work.
Other than that, I disabled all the bloat I could and it's extremely lag free and a smooth feel (just like the "clean rom" touchwiz I ran on my last 2 galaxy phones.

I was (and still am) under the 2 year contract. I was eligible for upgrade last month.
I bought the note 4 today. So far so good. Only thing I miss is the root access for ad block and titanium back up.
But I'm overcoming that slowly haha

S6 edge rooted or note 5 stock??

Here's my dilemma.... I have a s6 edge rooted and running a custom Rom. My friend purchased a note 5 but wants to trade straight up because he really wants root and feels the note 5 is a little too big. What would you do in this situation? Both phones are black and Verizon 64gb. I'm so torn because I know the note 5 won't see root anytime in the near future

My friend purchased a note 5 but wants to trade straight up because he really wants root and feels the note 5 is a little too big. What would you do in this situation? Both phones are black and Verizon 64gb. I'm so torn because I know the note 5 won't see root anytime in the near future

I never had the edge but I had the S6 with root and without. I can honestly say root did nothing performance wise for me, the phone worked great both ways. Yes I would prefer a rooted phone but with the debloat tool you can disable (hide) any app on the phone without root, foxfi works for tethering and themes are built in. If it's the bigger screen you want and don't mind loosing root it's a fair trade. Value wise I would say you are getting the better deal because the Note is worth more and it's newer.

You make some valid points. I think I'm going to stick with my rooted edge and here's why.
1. Adaway, I hate adds especially on certain apps.
2. Flashfire, I have the ability to flash roms. I'm running a custom Rom now that seriously increased the overall feel and speed of my phone.
3. I included the ram tweak which resolved the ram management issue.
4. I can flash custom themes!! Yes Samsung has a theme store, but it doesn't compete with akonda theme (yes that is spelled right)
5. My battery life is equal to the note 5 print screens I've seen posted on xda.
6. I really plan in buying the new nexus because I miss the dev community. Plus I love having a phone that works for any carrier 100%.
Don't get me wrong, if the note 5 for Verizon magically gets root I will buy the phone cash same day

It definitely sounds like the Note 5 isn't the ideal phone for you. It for sure won't satisfy the crack flasher in you lol. For me I'm happy where I am, between all the phones I've switched to lately and all the ROMs I made I burnt myself out for a while. Just this year I went through a bunch of phones. I had the Note 4 retail and Dev, Droid turbo, S6, S5, LG G4, M8 and now the Note 5. 8 different phones and a few I switched back to and from. It's time for a break and enjoy what I have.
Try adguard ....no root required but it's 9.00 for a year

I'm right there with you bother lol, I've had this year alone note 4, note edge, nexus 6, iPhone 6 plus, and now s6 edge. I think by far the biggest selling point of any phone is the ability to use the phone on all the big U.S carriers. I've also been struggling with switching to T-Mobile. I have two lines with unlimited data for the wife and I with Verizon. I'm tired of this phone bill $200 a month is out of control.

Call customer service and tell them you are going to switch. I did and I ended up getting $30.00 off my monthly bill yesterday and when my three contracts run out soon it will be an additional $25.00 off every month per line. If you are not on it it's the customer loyalty plan. I'm only on a 4 gig plan but we hardly use one so it's plenty for us. Either way i would call them I was at $235 or so every month. I did look into T-Mobile but it isn't worth it. After the equipment charges for the new phones and insurance the savings would have only been $10 a month and inferior coverage. If you own your own phones and get good service with them it might be worth it. Cricket was a good option for me too but Verizon beat their price.

I too looked into t-mobile a little while ago, but did not find to much savings. I think carriers are starting to get on board with their pricing. Wanting to squeeze a little more out of customers since verizon and att do.

And I'm curios about the moto x pure and new nexus 5 xd
My wallet doesn't appreciate my interest in phones
Also trying to decide - S6 Edge or Note 5

Thanks for sharing those reasons. I have been struggling with the same question ... S6 Edge or the Note 5. Was leaning towards the Note 5 because of the 4GB of system RAM and S-Pen, but I am concerned about the RAM management issues so many people have reported. Being as locked down as the VZW version is, there is no way to fix the issue without waiting for Samsung to fix it. The extra RAM becomes pointless if you can take advantage of it.
I didn't realize that you could run custom ROMs on the Verizon S6 Edge. I knew there was root but didn't realize you could flash a recovery and install custom ROMs. That would be a big reason to go for the S6 Edge in my opinion. Especially since Root access would let me fix the Ram issues as you have done. Would you happen to have a link to the thread that showed you how to install the custom ROMs for the S6 Edge? Thanks!

So there's a choir items to address.
1. You have to be on firmware oe2 or lower in order to root. You will never be able to upgrade your firmware or root will be lost, probably forever...
2. You can find the information in the Verizon s6 edge development thread.
3. I ended up trading for the note 5 because it's worth more in eBay right now, bigger screen, spen, and the bottomline it's running newer firmware.
Since Foxfi and adguard work extremely well the note 5 will hold me over until the nexus huawei comes available. I'm done with lock bootloaders and receiving slow updates

Note 5, or wait for next model?

I currently have an iphone 6S+, and its gotten to the point i hate it. I originally had it jailbroken etc and the support for it has just fallen off and now i cant do **** with it and its time to go, so my question is as a note 3 and 4 previous owner, will the note 5 do what i want? Ive heard a lot of contradictory information about it.
Can the 5s be rooted? I like stock appearence but debloated and the ability to use wifi hotspot because of my unlimited data plan.
Is there an SD slot? the non expandability of my ihone bothers me.
Or should i just wait till Fall and get the newest latest and greatest?

Seeing you want a SD card I would just wait. The Note 6/7 will be coming out in August so it's only about a month away. From the leaked specs it sounds like it's going to be a bumped up S7 with a slightly better processor, bigger battery and more ram. Along with a Note 5 I own the S7 edge and really like the camera and external SD. The Note 5 is a beautiful phone but I would wait a few weeks before you spend that kind of cash on a new phone. There is currently no root for either phone but you can disable any app with the paid version of Package Disabler pro (no PC required) or the Debloater tool witch is free but requires a PC. I also believe you can tether with FoxFi but I'm not 100% sure on that.
I to would wait for the next model. My Note 5 was fine until MM came out. I may revert back to the older software. No removable battery is a pain. I haven't had a memory problem but would still like to expand when needed. I have the 64 gig model.

but deinitely sounds like its worth waiting. Is the S7 edge rootable? The stylus is a mute point for me, i jsut want a giant screen and rooting/free teathering abilities lol

It did at first for me. But ive grown out of the root, recovery and flashing rom days. It was fun and all until dev support stops. And the Rom stays forever on kitkat 4.4.2 and meanwhile the phone is now on lolipop 5.1 or marshmallow 6.0.1 and getting left behind.

Same here but I was on the other end too. I got tired of wasting the days making ROMs just for Verizon to kill root the next update. I love the Samsung phones so I got used to no root. At least package disabler works and we have themes.

No the only S7 Edge that is rootable is the Chinese version. It's not available in the U.S.A. It's still a great phone root or not. You can have free teathering without root, read post #2 again. Root would be better but it's looking pretty dismal with a Samsung device.

For sure wait! The Note 7 will be out in less than one month. The price on the Note 5 will drop once the Note 7 is released. So even if you want a Note 5, wait for the price drop.

Yeah but they got root because a Samsung employee leaked a signed engineering bootloader.

I'll take it any way I can get it. It's not perfect but at least the file system can be modded to ones preference and full system back ups can be done.

Me too but my point was simply that this was a freak case due to the leak. We can't analogize anything they did with the S7 to the Note 5 because we don't have a signed engineering kernel for our device.
The fact that the S7 got rooted with a leaked signed engineering bootloader is no reason for us to have hope. We can't count on a Samsung employee leaking signed files like that, they are risking their job.
Rooting the S7 wasn't due to a dev finding an exploit; it was due to a Samsung employee leaking a file that they shouldn't have. Or worse, someone who wasn't a Samsung employee doing something illegal to obtain the file.

Actually, it is usually the opposite. The new device gets huge subsidies whereas the older devices stay at full price.
That having been said, it is pretty obvious to me that if you love the note series, and are into control of your phone, then the Note 4 Remains the best Android phone ever made for Verizon, and the best in the note series.
The list of benefits for the Note 4 is plethora: Root. Unlock Bootloader. Replaceable battery. SD card support. MHL. USB on-the-go. IR blaster. Great ROM support up to MM. Wireless charging option. Gorgeous screen. Incredibly durable build quality.
FYI: the first 8 benefits are not available on any other Verizon phone.
