Update lg g3 stock lollipop 5.0 to 5.1 without loosing root - General Questions and Answers

Hello I have a question.. I have the LG G3 VS98524B stock rom with root permission and twrp auto recovery installed and my current rom and data completely backed up. My question: is it possible to update from 5.0 to 5.1 without looking root and twrp ? The reason I'm asking is because I keep recieving notifications indicating that there is a new update available ota , I really would like to accept the update as it addresses a few bugs the G3 is having,as a result of the 5.0 update, but I'm concerned about looking root and twrp. Can someone maybe explain how to do this? And also is if I will loose root and twrp either way can someone just explain how I would want to go about unrooting then updating to 5.1 and rerooting and installing twrp if that's possible? Simply put I just want the update without loosing root and twrp but if that can't be done than what ways are available for unrooting,Then update and root again and is rooting the same way I had originally even possible on new 5.1. If not what tools would do that ?. Or can I just unroot then update and then boot into twrp and restore root somehow ? Just not sure what to do and any help would be great thank you..

Updating should be fine. If not just re-root. Or just update it via a sideload on ADB or some****.

Ok thank you. Do you think there is a root solution available for 5.1 currently ? Also if I'm unable to update ota style and do need to un root will updating cause me to loose twrp cuz I thought it wipes your everthing as well as the boot loader? And if I recall there is no twrp available yet for lg g3 vs98535b witch is what it would be after the update ? One more thing sorry but if I recall correctly an OTA update won't install anyway if the stock rom has root right ? Cuz technically it's been modified right ?

Side loading via ADB style
Sorry everyone I meant to ask this in previous post how do you sideload and install an update through ADB does it involve a PC? And if so is there a way to accomplish that task without a PC unfortunately I don't have one at the moment.. Thanks!

You need a PC to force (sideload) anything to your phone.

You should be able to just push the new firmware onto the device and use the bootloader to flash it.

Just rooted? No system modifications? Reason I ask is that if you are simply rooted and haven't modified system files AND you have stock recovery installed the update will go through fine...after which you reinstall twrp and flash su.zip

I'm still on 4.4.3 with a viper rom. I'll probably have to update to 4.4.4 in order to get to 5.0.1 right? Will updating to 4.4.4 then 5.0 allow me to keep root still? Or can I just easily flash supersu.zip through adb sideload to access root again if lost?
I won't be putting lollipop on my phone until it gets Xposed support.

With custom recovery = no OTA. Anyway, you are on 4.4.4. What do you want to OTA update to?
Just wait a few days after the next OTA release and you'll find the firmware files, RUU and such here on XDA, ready to be flashed in fastboot or via dottat's wonderful .exe's. Wait a few days more and your custom rom will get an update based on the latest release.
I would never chase an OTA......

If you are S-off you can always flash a custom recovery and su in recovery.

I don't necessarily want to update, but HTC/Verizon is starting to push out the OTA for Lollipop. When I had my Incredible 2 (S-OFF/CWM recovery/rooted), VZW constantly nagged me with OTA update prompts until I edited a system (build.prop maybe? I can't remember) file to trick them into thinking I already had the latest. I just don't want a repeat of that, plus I'm really not interested in updating until Lollipop has full Xposed support!

Go to Settings > Apps, swipe to All and disable HTC DM. Or, even better, freeze it in TiBu.
That should take care of any update notification.

Shutting down Repeatedly When trying to Update Marshmallow

Hi All,
I have Moto X play running on android 5.1.1 lollipop. It was rooted recently and used with cyanogen Mod 12.1 for a month. during that time i did back up of entire phone. later i restored that and at present i have been using stock Rom. Recently i got official update for Android marshmallow and i downloaded the 500+Mb file and tried to install. In that process it was going to Twrp recovery mode and not installing properly. So i did reboot system. After 5 mins i turned on mobile, it got shutdown and i again restored my backup . It was working fine. cant we update to Marshmallow with the rooted device? If so how to stop the notifications of android system updates? I tried this way but still i am getting update notification
Apps--> All---> Motorola Update services--> turned off the notification
.How to disable it so that i should not receive update notification? or any other process to upgrade to marshmallow even after rooting? Please let me know

you need stock recovery to update to OTA mm, you cannot update from TWRP. download the lollipop stock-firmware extract the recovery file and flash it, then update.
i wanted to ask that after restoring from backup you got OTA update notification ? or you downloaded the MM update from other sources?? because i thought after rooting i wont get official OTA.

if you have your backup just do a full flash on stock rom and start fresh. there's an Asian 6.0 rom (I believe it is Indian) on the x play github. then proceed with root again.

First rooted the mobile. before installing the cyanogen Mod 12.1, i took back up in TWRP recovery mode. i used that same backup to restore after my device got shutdown. Yes even after rooting i got the Update notification

Sir, Is it possible to unroot the rooted devices in any way? if so could you please let me know
if you want to unroot you can do it from superuser, its mentioned in the youtube video. just unroot from superuser settings.
then if you want to upgrade to marshmallow download Indian stock lollipop rom from https://github.com/motoxplay/stock. unzip it on your computer to the the folder where you kept TWRP while flashing it . you'll see a file named recovery.img.
from adb run the command
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
i.e flash this recovery just the way you flashed TWRP.
then you can update to marshmallow.
and did disabling google play services removed your update notification???

nope no problem just flash the recovery. but before doing anything take a backup on your external sdcard twrp>>backup[look at bottom to change where to store the backup select sd card] for security if in case anything goes wrong, you can flash twrp again and restore.

Just follow the procedure as given in that thread and everything will be fine.
It has nothing to do with the way you rooted your phone.
If a phone has twrp installed, he has nothing to fear about upgrading to latest versions as the updates are made available on Xda in Twrp flashable zip.
So no need to format the stock firmware again and then update and then all the headache.

Sir, In your previous post you meant to say this?
1. First unroot the mobile using the super Su (settings)
2. Then flash the Stock lollipop rom mentioned in the github
3. Then update the mobile to Marshmallow
4. Then again root the device

1. correct
1.1. check oem unlock and usb debugging
1.2. Copy the original old backup which you took, to your external sdcard. [just to return to stock if anything goes wrong]
2. Just flash the recovery which is present in the lollipop rom, no need to flash the whole rom.
3. correct
4. Do NOT flash the old superuser to root. To root again follow these steps http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-play/general/root-how-to-root-6-0-easly-t3277202
that other post was much easier

New OTA update?

I got notification of a new OTA 72MB update. Any one else get it? I searched online and saw no info on it. It seems to include a new modem img. Anyone updated? Any ideas on how to make a flashable zip? I was thinking I could by simply editing the updater script of the OTA...
I have been looking for info on this as well. I don't want to lose root just to see what it is. I will wait for someone to confirm.
Here's the update file from the Metro PCS OTA and it does indeed include a new radio img...someome please make this flashable!

There is no flashable zip. It needs to be flashable to update through TWRP.
Also, he lost root and was unable to get root back.
Another reason not to accept it. I wouldn't want to root

about your loss root, maybe you have slow internet connection when you updated it. sorry if i wrong bro..
MetroPCS LG stylo Android version MS63120C isn't rootable through Kingroot anymore if you take the latest update but no worries you don't need kingroot anymore. Place the TWRP recovery.img file in the same directory as ADB and Fastboot and take the SU zip file on your external SD card -Click anywhere on the blank white space in that folder - Now press your Shift key + right click your mouse - In the menu that comes up select "Open command window here" option - In the command window type "adb devices" - then go to your cell and accept the key and then type "adb reboot bootloader" - your cell should restart and you'll be in fastboot. Now in the command window type "fastboot boot recovery.img". You should now be in TWRP recovery one your cell. Now on your cell while in TWRP recovery select "Install" then navigate to your external SD card and select the SU zip file and install it. Now like myself you'll have root again. Then download and install fashify and flash the recovery.img to install twrp
If you don't have a PC to root Marshmallow on this device, you're screwed.

need help updating the idol 3(twrp installed and rooted)

ok i just saw that the offical marshmellow update had been released and wanted to upgrade.
i have the cricket 5.5" idol 3
my phone is rooted and has twrp installed would like info on how to get the update or a stock rom for the phone with marshmellow.
i am new to the upgrading after root and dont know if hiding root is enough or if i need to uninstall the su binary.
also not sure if the updated phone is rooted in the same way if i have to uninstall the su binary.
Hi,
You can reflash stock recovery and unrooot, then upgrade trough the Alcatel Update app.
Or you can flash stock modded rom UE 4 by murigny64. You'll get the mm stock rom without losing recovery. Have a look to it thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3435577
Is there a tutorial link for flashing the stock recovery and unrooting?
If so id be grsteful for the links.
As always thanks for any help provided.

To unroot, check the apps settings to see if there is an option to completely unroot.
If you want to get back to completely stock, you could use the mobile upgrade software to perform a factory restore. Check the official alcatel website for the program and drivers.
ok will be resetting and reverting to stock then will reinstall root and twrp.
running mobile upgrade now.
will update soon
boot is slow as hell.
may have issues
will update in a sec after a second reboot attempt
boot sucessfull.
updated need updated root and twrp guide for the new rom
wow
this is enought to drive me to a custom rom.
So the phone is running mm or lp?
it was runing mm.
discovered that adb is disabled hince no twrp and no trusted root btw kingo did root.
now im back to 5.0.2
looking for the modified update.zip i saw mentioned that doesnt overwrite bootloader.
ok got update.zip
from fotadownload folder need help with the modifier script.
i probably wouldn't go back to stock to then upgrade, as from what i've read getting twrp and root back on after upgrading to mm is not as easy as just keeping twrp and starting from there
---------- Post added at 03:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:47 PM ----------
there are mm roms in the Onetouch Idol 3 Android Development forum which are already prepped to just flash from twrp.

Recevied an update with rooted phone, is it safe to update ?

I'm currently on NXT-29C185B190 and I received update with NXT-29C185B1200, my phone is unlocked and rooted, I have flash fire installed and it recognized that update was downloaded.
My question is flash fire have big red huawei device warning, saying Huawei device is very easy to hard brick (also my mate 8 is my first locked bootloader phone) so is it safe to use flash fire ? or install update throught huawei system without losing root ?

Is this an EMUI update through the standard update menu in settings - updater?
The version seems a bit odd to me, the last update for C185 was B320, I wouldn't expect an official update to jump as high as that. Mind uploading a screenshot?
Anyway, as for actually updating, as long as you are running stock recovery (not TWRP) then it shouldn't be an issue. Just know that you WILL lose root after updating. And I'd strongly suggest making a data backup before the update.

Thanks for the help, I tried to user flash fire to keep my root but it failed to update, now I really think rooting huawei phone is more trouble than it worth as for what you said is version is typo
I'm currently on B190 and I got update to B200.
and yes the update is standard update from system updater
I have twrp installed so that means I can't update at all ?
Plz i want to know how to return to the normal situation after root and unlock bootloader in order to receibe update without problem

Well if you unlocked bootlader and rooted, it safe to say that you have TWRP installed, fire up SRKToolHuawei choose (2)install recovery then install stock recovery after that it reboots and then update using system updater from huawei.
PS: You will lose your root access and new to install TWRP then root again.
