Android 6.0 and Hangouts issue - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I Have flashed the factory image on my N5 and put a couple of mp3's in the notifications folder to use for Hangouts. When I go into hangouts then settings for both hangouts and SMS and change the sound to the ones I have put into the folder Hangouts says that those sounds are selected, but when someone sends me a text (SMS or Hangouts) it plays a default system sound. I can make the notification sound change if I pick any of the "stock" ones. Anyone else having this issue?

I'm having a similar issue (Nexus 6). I also have a nexus 5 that I have not checked to see if that issue is there as well. I have loaded several sounds in the notifications and ringtones folder. I have set hangouts as the default SMS app, turned on notifications, and set the notification sound. No matter what I do, I get the default notification sound... I'll continue to see if I can figure out what the issue is but its not working as it was in 5.1.1.

I removed all of the ringtones and notifications except the one I was interested in and confirmed what you experiencing. If I use an 6.0 included notification, it works fine, If I use one of my own in the notification folder, it defaults to the hangout notification sound....

Thank you for replying and confirming that you are having the same issue. I thought I was going crazy. I have reported the issue to google hopefully it gets fixed ASAP

convert them to ogg files and they should work. I've never been able to get mp3's to work as notification sounds.

I wanted to add that the notification files that I want to use are ogg files and still have this issue. It plays fine in the selection menu, but when a message comes in, it is the hangout default notification....

Just converted them to OGG and put them on my phone. Deleted the old mp3's and restarted. Selected them and it appears to be working correctly.

I'm still having the issue. I added a reboot between selecting the notification sound (again which plays fine) and receiving a text. same issue.
Stock notification plays when selected and receiving a SMS
Non stock notification plays when selected but the Hangout default notification plays when I get a SMS.

I figured out the issue. It felt like permissions. In settings under apps -> hangouts -> permissions I had to add storage since that is where my new notifications I added are located. Once I added storage, the notification plays as expected.

I just checked those settings and that option was already selected. I however deleted the OGG file and replaced with an MP3 and it is still working. hahaha weird.

Your solution worked perfectly, jdawg0024. Thank you! I did the same for the stock phone app because it wouldn't play the MP3 ringtone I'd selected.

Don't mean to hijack the thread (issue solved) but I wanted to ask - any of you gents having trouble w Hangouts refusing to show contact pictures? This only seems to happen on 6.0.0+ for me, Lollipop and under is gravy
I've tried Messenger, Chomp Evolve etc and none of them have this issue in M. Anyone else?

Rumored that Google is removing SMS and MMS from Hangouts in future version.

Go SMS notification issue.

Okay, so I got go sms, and I love the app so far, but, anytime I try to select a notification from "music", I notice it doesn't play when I test it, or receive a text, but when I preview it, it plays. I mentioned this several times in the go SMS thread, and two updates later, the issue still exists. Any ideas how to fix this, THANKS.
Sent from my rooted, JITed, X10, using my fingers, my eyes, one of my brain's four cores (Take that tegra 2), and Oh, the XDA app.
that's odd. mine doesn't even select the music. after i click OK it defaults back to current ringtone.
Same I also have the same both error ringtone back to default or ringtone in music dont work. And I thought there was something wrong with my SDcard because my ringtone was save in SDcard. It works fine after I send my ringtone to root/../notification sound. But sometimes the ringtone still goes missing, no ringtone just virbation.

Email Notification problems

I have switched my notifications to a custom sound and it is working for my text messages, and a few other notifications but it is playing the previous notification sound when I get a new email.
I am using gmail and I have tried both mp3 and wav formats. The file is under /mnt/sdcard/media/audio/notifications
the file size is 91k.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
TIA
[EDIT]
I found it it was under gmail -> settings -> select ringtone must have overlooked it LOL

Notification sound won't change

I've gone into the settings and change my default notification sound from Cloud to anything else but it won't change. I can select any other sound but when I get a notification it still plays the Cloud sound.
I go check under setting and it is set to the other sound I chose but it still plays Cloud only.
Any thoughts or ideas
change in individual app's settings: email, text, etc. It held changes after doing so. Main sound settings should, but for some reason don't.

What apps in this behavior occurring in? All apps? One app? Be specific please.
It's happening when I get a text message or E-Mail notification. I set the Notification sound under sound settings and it always plays Cloud instead of whatever I do choose.
I found the setting in Messages to set it for the sound I want. My bad. Thanks for pointing me right way...
I'm having the same problem.
I have the main notifications sound in the setting main menu to clouds for example, I'm using K9 mail and I have the sound for incoming mail set to something else, but when new mail arrives I get the main sys sound of Clouds. I tried setting up the stock email client and had the same result. The Text message sound plays different, but not the email.
Anyone know?
I was able to set both in their own apps. Messages & G-Mail the sound settings were there. It is now working on mine. I just failed to find it at first.

Nexus 5 - Android 4.4 Kit Kat Hangouts Custom Ringtone?

I love using this phone so far, but the one thing I can't stand is I've changed my notification ringtone to the proper one, but hangouts doesnt use it at all. Im assuming hangouts wasn't integrated fully and thats why it doesnt use the notification ringtone as the proper ringtone. Is there a path to the ringtone that hangout uses?
I have no problem backing up that ringtone and replacing it with my custom ringtone. I've had to do this before for earlier versions of android and for iOS. I just need to know where to look.
I will have more time when I get home but tonight will be a long day at work so if anyone see's this and can answer it, I will appreciate it greatly.
Thanks,
Sikh
Ok so the option is actually under settings under the hangouts app. Its Hangouts App > Settings > Sound.
I wish it would be in the actual sound settings like all of the other sound types (Phone, Notificaiton) but oh well.
I love consistency, so I looked where I thought it would make sense and then figured it wasn't implemented. But I went back just now and looked in the settings of the app and realized its right there.

ok, you've found where it is... anyway in this menu you can set it to use the system default so you can change it on system setting and make it change even in hangouts.

You were correct, there is actually no setting to edit the ringtone for voip calls in hangouts through google voice. It sucks.
You could download Zedge.
The bug still exists in Hangouts app 3.0 released today that prevents changing to a custom ringtone. The default Hangouts ringtone is too quiet. Google is such a sloppy software company these days.
How have you guys NOT noticed this yet? The vibrate tick box registers (it turns it on & off), as tested by incoming calls. But changing to any ringtone does NOT register, always ringing with default sound still. Bad Google, very bad, after about 6 months since Hangouts + GV integration in sept 2014, this basic feature is still missing.
If I (or anyone with basic programming skills) had access to the Hangouts source code, it'd take less than an hour to find & fix.

[Q] CM11S Notification Audio GONE! How to get them back?

My audio has disappeared for notifications. I think its part of profiles screwing something up but I have been unable to reset things so I can get my notifications to work again.
When you try to set the notification sound none of the previews work. Setting a ringtone works, just not notification.
I am on stock CM11S for now.
Does anyone have a workaround? I thought this CM bug was fixed back in CM10
Thanks

Could you get this working? I'm having the same issue, no notification sound on any app, I can't even get the sound preview on the settings app.
Are your notifications separate from ringtone?
Settings -> Sound -> Volumes -> Link ringtone.....

I have the same issue:
Symptoms:
No sound, just vibrate whenever there is a notification
Ringtone works perfectly
when going through the sound settings menu for notifications I get a list of all notifications. Clicking on any of these results in no sound whatsoever. (I used to get a preview of what that tone sounded like).
I've tried everything short of a factory reset
I'm running the latest OTA, but this issue was occuring before the latest OTA as well
I installed the infamous cm11 theme (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.infamous.cm.theme) and then uninstalled it. I think my sound stopped working then but I'm not sure.
Could it be my notification sound files have been deleted? Where can I find them on my system? Browsing through I don't see anything under /notifications or /media/notifications
Some searching unearthed this bug (https://jira.cyanogenmod.org/browse/BACON-6) . It seems to describe my symptoms but I've never used profiles. I used quiet hours but have disabled it completely.
Please help! I really don't want to factory reset. And if I have to, how do I back everything up and then restore (whilst still having my sound fixed?)

THANK YOU!
This fixed it. For reference go to Settings -> Sound -> Volumes and uncheck the 'link ringtone and notification volumes' box. Max out the notification volume and you should be golden. You can recheck it again if you'd like.
